I am so glad we chose the Ebbitt Room for our special meal in Cape May. We arrived about a half hour early for our reservation which gave us the opportunity to have a couple cocktails at the bar. The bartenders did a great job with the cocktails. Once seated, we had our dinner and I have to say, some of the things we had are definitely on my "10 Best Things I ever ate" list. That is saying a lot, because I am a dedicated foodie. Some favorites: the rabbit appetizer, the steak, and the scallops. The staff was attentive, friendly and efficient. It was a rather expensive meal, but very much worth the cost. We will definitely return here when we return to Cape May. read more

Enjoyed dinner at the bar one night during off season. Started off with a martini that was served in the smallest glass ever - when drinking a martini it needs to be in the normal standard glass; not a shot glass on a stem! We enjoyed a Hamachi ceviche to start and it was amazing! We then both ordered cheeseburgers - excellent & the fries were so good. Bartender was friendly & we had fun chatting with others at the bar. My friend and I decided to dine here for the restaurant week menu. My friend had just been to this restaurant a few days ago, before restaurant week, for a birthday celebration. She noted that the portions were larger on the same dishes before restaurant week and she was very disappointed that the birthday person was not recognized in any way despite it being noted on the reservation and check-in. I began with a house specialty, the Beach Plum Farm deviled eggs. The presentation of the eggs was beautiful. The egg with the salmon was delicious perfection, perhaps the best deviled egg ever. However, not only were the other two eggs only okay, they tasted of mustard- too much mustard. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her beet salad. Both of us order the sea scallops for entrees. There were five sea scallops ranging in size, one large one, on each plate. The scallops were good, but two or three of them were sandy, the grittiness spoiled the lovely flavor. The supervisor in the area told me it was probably just the pepper. Now, as for the desserts, the vanilla ice cream was very good and the sorbet had some chunks of ice in it. The chocolate lava cake was a bit dry and had a chocolate syrup inside, I think it needed the vanilla ice cream. Lastly, the ambiance was not good because a couple brought a sometimes screaming baby. The mother announced that the child hadn't had its afternoon nap. The restaurant staff did not address the situation. Perhaps they were waiting to see if the other diners on the patio would complain? I was tired and did not want to move because we had just begun receiving our food when the baby began to scream...and it looked as if the restaurant inside was completely full. Nothing could be more convenient than just going downstairs from our Virginia Hotel room to a 5-star dining experience. We had originally made reservations elsewhere, but after a 7 hour car ride, we looked at the menu and decided to "eat in". Reservations were possible only because it was mid-week and off-season, so we got lucky. We started with cocktails, a Manhattan and and Mule. Both were prepared expertly. We shared a crab cake appetizer and Parker House rolls. Entrees were scallops and rainbow trout. Both qualified as "the best thing we ever ate". True. Our favorite restaurant in Cape May! We keep coming back each year. We start with cocktails on the front porch. First come first served for seating. A great place to unwind, meet fellow travelers and enjoy dusk on the open air porch of a Grand Victorian home. This year we enjoyed dinner on the outside garden patio. We shared the deviled eggs for an app - three unique flavors that we enjoyed. For dinner hubby got the halibut entree and I got the black bass entree. Hubby. Says the halibut was 4 of 5. My bass was a 5 of 5. I want to go back and get it again. We spilt the key lime pie dessert with some decaf coffees. Really good ending. Sergio was our server and was very attentive. Only had drinks here, but let me tell you why I'm giving this place five stars after only having drinks... We stayed at the Virginia during Christmas time and they do such an amazing job with the decor and the fireplace. If you come here just for drinks, you'll love the company and ambiance. I'm a sucker for dirty martinis with bleu cheese olives and the Ebbitt Room makes their own bleu cheese olives. It's the little things sometimes and I appreciate that sort of effort. The Bartender was very friendly and seemed to know the regulars very well. Very comfortable atmosphere and less "stuffy" when compared to the Brown Room at Congress Hall. We did both bars and loved the Ebbitt Room much more. read more

A quick update on our week at the Virginia. Everything has been wonderful; except for the weather! We have mentioned that the highlight of our stay at the Virginia is Kenny the piano player in the Ebbitt room. However, on our last night the piano seemed a little off. Sort of "tinny" and not natural. That full sound we were used to was missing. We told Kenny that maybe the instrument needed a good tuning. Much to our surprise, Kenny told us the piano was brand new? Unfortunately, the old real piano was replaced with a new-fangled electric version! My opinion and a $100 will get you a small bag of groceries these days. However, I think a classy upscale room such as the Ebbitt and a super talented artist such as Kenny deserves a real piano. read more

A beautiful, traditional Cape May style building that offers fantastic food, drinks and ambiance. Perfect for an "adult" night or date. Our server April, was informative and delivered prompt and friendly service. The Bees Knees & Golden Paloma were our beverages of choice. The taste as well as presentation were well balanced and tasty. The Ahi Sashimi Appetizer was delicious, I could eat that as an entree, the tuna was tender, the ginger, scallion and rice were perfect with it. The Duck was delicious, cooked perfectly and paired with daikon, bokchoy and rice, I devoured it quickly. My partner had the chimmichurri Steak, it was cooked perfectly and the Chimmichurri sauce was just the right amount of tangy and spicy, a great complement to the meat. Highly recommend both dishes. The back garden was peaceful and beautiful, it was a hot day and this was a cool oasis to dine in. Loved the food as well and the history within the building itself. read more

Beautiful restaurant and bar. When in Cape May twice per year, this is always, and always will be our first dinner and drinks. Our server, Ben, was great. We had a few questions about the menu and he was very knowledgeable and suggested a few items. We had the Braised Lamb Shank, and the Filet as our main course and everything was absolutely perfect, as always. After dinner, we walked over to the beautiful bar and finished the night drinking Cape May Mules, mixed perfectly by Leo, while listening to Ken Richardson play music all night long. I was impressed with the cocktails on par with some of the best cocktail bars in NYC. The Spanish octopus was delicious , fresh and soft. Last pm we celebrated a special birthday dinner here in Cape May. This is a special occasion place. The food is good , piano player livens the scene. We sat at a table for four non the front porch. I was hoping for the inside seating but honestly the porch seating was warm, distanced and worked out perfectly. To the food. We all started with appetizers 2 had the potato leek soup which was quite good and hearty with just a hint of bacon. One opted for the special razor clams in white wine sauce also very good. One opted for the beet salad which had some special add ins that weren't on the menu. The rolls were also quite good. There were a few specials in addition to the menu which all sounded amazing. I ordered the beef cheek with potato purée and the most delicious savory sauce. Our table also ordered the filet mignon , one ordered the shrimp cocktail and lobster Mac and cheese for their meal and the birthday girl ordered the 32 oz tomahawk steak special. All the food flavors were good, food was served hot to warm. We had a sampling of bar items as well we tried the cape May mule which was garnished well, not too booze forward but nice. We also had the blood orange martini. This was a good option. We also had a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. All in all we had a great meal. No room for dessert which was a good problem to have. Service was good . Good spot if you want a special meal and for it to feel more special. Meal price for four 509 all in with gratuity. read more

Came here for my girl's bachelorette & we had the private dining room for 16 of us. It was cozy, charming & intimate. Prior to dinner, we grabbed a drink at the small bar. They were fast and super friendly. They have a beautiful lounge area for people to sit on couches and chairs with a cocktail, while listening to their piano player. I would go back just for that! They also have seating on the outdoor deck, that's closed in with heaters, which looks very cute. Nevertheless, the service was great; Jordan took care of us. He was super attentive & wonderfully patient for our large group. The drinks were flowing and they had many great options, such as seasonal moscow mules, blue cheese dirty martinis, high rollers, and a great wine list. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their cocktails. For appetizers, we shared a bunch of plates: Tempura Calamari, Turkey Carpaccio, Rabbit Risotto, Fresh Rolls, Shishito Peppers, Deviled Eggs & Oysters on the half shell. The oysters were so fresh, and the flavors of all the apps were fantastic. My top two would have been the Shishito Peppers & Risotto. For dinner, some of us got Swordfish, some Filet Mignon, and I got the Lamb Shank. The lamb was incredibly tender, and the polenta it was served over was so fluffy. Definitely one of the best I've had in a long while! I finished dinner with the S'mores Tart and some got the Creme Brulee. All was so delicious! The noise level inside was terrible. They should not sit people next to the bar. The selection was OK, not great. Most importantly, they rushed the servings, I felt like I was in a fast food restaurant, much much too rushed. We were looking forward to the homemade ice cream which they could not provide. Supposedly their freezer went down and they couldnt get it fixed!!!! So desserts that had ice cream with them was substituted by whip cream! They really shouldn't have tables there especially for the price point of the restaurant. The service was excellent and everyone was very nice and accommodating. We got the two appetizer specials, steak and scallops. Everything was delicious except for the scallops. The scallops had a lot of cinnamon (not mentioned on the menu) so it tasted more like a red hot/fireball. I'd go back again but would definitely ask to sit in a different location. read more
