We had the egg sandwich, which is fantabulous and one of the most distinctive I've ever had: Cage-Free Local Egg, Ham, Cheddar, Roasted Tomato, Kale, Served on Sullivan Street Potato Panino. The runny egg and potato bun are especially memorable. Coffee was on point--we had the iced variety. Pricey but stiff. Staff is really cool and friendly. I haven't seen her there since, but The Elk has since turned into one of my regular spots to grab a coffee or chai when I'm in the area. If you're looking to snag a table and enjoy a coffee with some friends on a weekend morning, good luck to you: The Elk gets slammed, so I usually end up getting my drink to go. On weeknights, it turns into a more low-key, quiet space, usually with a few people getting work done on their laptops. Really bright and bustling spot to grab a drink and study! I came here around noon on a Saturday looking for a spot to read for an hour or two, and this was perfect--bustling but not too loud. Its table seating fills up quickly, but when I came counter seating against the side wall was empty. You might not get one of the few coveted window seats, but the entire cafe is doused with plentiful light from outside and there's generally a seat or two open. Bonus: they have outlets!! As for drinks, I got an iced latte with whole milk ($5) and I enjoyed it. I wouldn't say I'm a coffee expert but I appreciated how creamy it was. I didn't try any of the food but it all looked really good and portions seemed generous. Their stuff is pricey--if you check in on Yelp, you get 10% off, so definitely take advantage of that. The currant rosemary scone is a great pick (worth the $4 if you're looking for something savory-esque and tart). LImited seating (like every other cafe in Manhattan) -- there are about six barstools and a few smaller tables -- but it's not crowded (yet), so it's not a stressful cafe experience, the way some over-popular ones can be. I've gotten coffee here many times, but I will no longer go to this coffee shop. The Oslo is nearby, and better, and I recommend others go there as well. Some of the baristas are great, but some at The Elk have very negative attitudes. I ordered a latte, and the espresso shot had been sitting out for a while due to food orders taking priority. I asked if it could be repoured (this is the first time I ever asked for this at the Elk), and the barista went into a long diatribe, about how she had been working in the industry for 8 years, how she knows better, how she hates coffee snobs, and on and on. She was very angry. I'm not a coffee snob - I use to work as a barista myself in college for multiple years. I know it's not easy, and I know what it looks like when someone has forgotten an espresso shot and left it out too long. In fact, I've accidentally done it myself a number of times. It happens, especially when things are busy, and it's really not a big deal - you just repour it. But that's not what happened at the Elk - instead I got an apoplectic rant from someone with a serious attitude problem. read more

If this cafe isn't a "hidden gem" I have no idea what is. Abutting the scenic Hudson, The Elk is a short walk from the Greenway, making it ideal for grabbing a coffee and heading down to the river, or vice versa, which is what I did. The second you walk in, you are struck by the sanded, unfinished wood aesthetic, modest succulents peppering the shelves, and the seating that hugs up against the huge street side windows. I swear these people never need to pay for lightbulbs because they are killin' the natural light game. Anyway, aside from the fact that it looks like something you'd see in a Restoration Hardware catalogue, the Elk offers the standard selection of coffee and espresso drinks, all of which look wonderful. Definitely pair whatever you get with the chocolate chip cookie, which was one of my favorite parts about my whole experience. The barista was a hoot, too. Open early on a weekday morning like any good coffee shop. Got in before the morning rush so I can get my food quickly. Friendly staff and nice ambiance to enjoy a meal with lots of light coming in through the windows. After viewing the pictures, decided on the Avocado Toast w/Fried Egg ($10), Pumpkin Olive Oil Cake ($4ish), and an Iced Coffee ($4ish). First: the iced coffee is damn good. Added a bit of cream and some simple syrup for a well balanced summer drink. Second: the cake is just the right amount of moist as per most olive oil caked, with a hint of pumpkin that makes it unique; delicious. Third: huge spread of avocado on the bread. A little tough to eat with all the ingredients, but it all works well together. Could have used more chili flakes. The price point is high, just like much of the area. However, the coffee is made right and the atmosphere is perfect. Many other things to try here. read more

Such an adorable little spot! In a beautiful neighborhood, a spot like this only adds to the charm. Great coffee, staff, and vibe.

I placed a 17 breakfast burrito order 24 hours in advance for delivery through their website. When it had not been delivered at the agreed upon time I called the store with no answer. The previous day I also called with no answer. Then I called the number of the courier I received from The Elk and the number was out of service. I continued to call the Elk and finally the phone was answered. I was then told this was supposed to be ordered as catering and that essentially it was my fault for not ordering the correct way and not at all their fault that they could not handle orders that were placed even 24 hours in advance. They told me in the future to have an email dialogue through their website to place my orders. I place 300 dollar orders for my office multiple times per week and I guess this will be business the Elk will not receive as working with them would require extra leg work on my end and they obviously do not have a process in place to make sure their orders make it to their customers on time. The only negative we both agreed on was the seating situation: there were a lot of people working on their laptops and all of the indoor seats were full. Their food is available for take out, but most of it is not easily eaten on the go so you kinda need somewhere to sit regardless. Stopped in here while walking around the Village on our way to Washington Sq. Park. I got a iced chai tea and my husband got a latte. I was worried I wouldn't like my chai tea, I tend to be picky with my caffeinated beverages, but it was delicious. My husband really enjoyed his latte as well. My chai was $4 which is, I think, priced exactly right for a delicous chai in a good coffee shop in New York. The aesthetics were adorable in this little cafe. Very hipster/neighborhood coffee shop and it fit the feel of the area. So glad we could stop into this cute little gem. First off, I must say that I've only been to The Elk a few times; upon a recent visit, I was on my way to go on a Hornblower cruise, was a tad too early to board, and wanted a chai while I waited. I got my chai, sat down at the counter, capped it, leaned down to plug my phone in to give it some juice...and proceeded to spill my chai ALL. OVER. MY. PANTS. I don't mean just a few drops. I mean if I was an elementary school student, I would have been sent to the nurse's office and my mom would have been called in to bring me dry pants. I felt so embarrassed; luckily a cute Australian patron sitting next to me, along with the wonderful and quick-thinking staff behind the counter, came to the rescue with napkins and shammies. They even gave me a new chai, which I manage to keep contained. Ha! I'm thankful for their quick thinking and the fact that they told me not to be embarrassed. Haha. Including my singular misadventure there, I do have ample praise for The Elk. I have regular spots I normally patronize - Joe, Toby's Estate, Think Coffee - but this spot is great because it's a tad off of the beaten path, unassumingly located in a very residential section of the West Village, west of Greenwich but east of the river. Besides having chai (Harney's, at that!), they have a good coffee and drink menu (turmeric lattes!) and a small but wonderful menu; upon one visit, I wish I hadn't eaten beforehand because I wanted to dig into a neighbor's noodle bowl! It's a little cramped for space - quite popular! - and, luckily, half of the seating is reserved for non-computer use, which I appreciate. The Elk is definitely my new West Village hideaway. This is a great cafe if you can actually get a seat at decent hours. Every time I'm here it's filled completely and there really isn't anywhere to sit. If you do get a seat, it's a comfortable place with pleasant natural light and an iconic West Village view. My cappuccino was fine, just what I'd expect.
