A couple of weeks ago I visited the fish counter on a rainy weekend. I was craving for some delicious fish and chips - I remember going to the fish counter years ago where I knew the fries would be perfectly crispy and the fish would be fresh. I was SOOOOO disappointed with my meal because it didn't live up to my expectations. The staff were super friendly and I was the only customer there-I was waiting for my fish and chips patiently, as I knew my order was going to be made fresh. I didn't think I would have to ask for my chips to be extra crispy as I remembered their fries being the benchmark for how perfectly hand cut fries should be done. I was proven so wrong that day. I know the chips I had were fresh as I saw them being prepared. I fully expected my meal to hold its crispiness when I took it home (which was about 10 minutes away). The fries were limp, borderline undercooked, not crispy at all. In photos it looks decent but it missed its trademark super crispy on the outside and pillowy soft in the inside (usually this is done when the cute fries are frozen and then fried). This was a huge disappointment as I was looking forward to the chips-even more than the fish itself. What happened to this place? I was so disappointed that it was hard to enjoy the rest of my meal. The deep fried oysters were fine and the fried fish was just okay, the batter felt a bit greasy. I really want to go back again to see if I was just unlucky and the person didn't leave the fries in long enough. Because I don't want to drive all the way to Steveston to have a proper fish & chips.

I went there yesterday afternoon for a late lunch and it was amazing. I had the one-piece cod. Perfectly cooked with light batter (not greasy at all), and the chips were fresh and hot. Definitely recommend.

Probably some of the best fish and chips I've had!! The cod was flakey and fresh, the frying oil was recently changed so it didn't have a bitter taste at all, and the fries were ultra crispy. I also loved their house made tartar sauce to dunk everything into. The fish and chips is quite a large portion so depending on how hungry you are you might only need one fried fish per person. I surprisingly loved the cabbage salad they give you to also help cut through all the greasiness of the rest of the meal.

Friendly Service, The fish portions are HUGE as well as fries. I had the halibut, my husband had the salmon, both were delicious! The tartar sauce had no flavor but I would still return because the fish was killer delicious!! Seating is limited cause it's a small business.

We went to see a matinee at the Viff during the International Film Festival and it's almost 3 pm afterwards so decided to pop into Fish Counter. This is the first time we visited since they changed ownership a couple of years ago. We ordered the 2pc cod/chips and 1pc oyster. The Cod--not dried out yet not moist at all, fish not seasoned at all, it was flavourless. Plus I was given 3 long strips of thin cut fish trimmings! The Batter--thick not light as it should be, soaked in so much grease that it overpowers the delicate flavour of white fish. The Oyster--taste fresh except for the oily heavy batter The Chips--uneven slices, some stuck together, taste ok If your palette prefer greasy oily battered fish, then you will enjoy it! I was quite hungry, forgot about pictures. My stomach felt really queasy and nauseated after all that grease so I will not go again until they change ownership again:-)

It is always interesting to go to a place for the first time. There is a full menu of lunch options and choosing just one can be interesting. It was really quite nice. Not a five-star dining establishment but a "down to earth" place to get good seafood either to take home and cook from their real "fish counter" (not us this trip but I suspect quite a few locals do this) or to eat at their counters or shared tables (also seemed like neighborhood locals). Fish and chips seems to be their specialty but we ended up splitting a crab/shrimp croquette sandwich (with fries for us Americans) which was exactly what we wanted in a light lunch before walking in Queen Elizabeth Park. I didn't love the pickled cabbage that was in the baguette but it certainly wasn't bad and the slaw on the side was delicious. We will definitely return to try something else. And the big bonus for us turned out to be one the few shelf staples they carry with a seafood connections. One of our goals for this particular trip to Canada was to replenish our supply of Maille Dijon mustard that can be difficult (or more correctly expensive) sometimes to source in the US. After striking out at the Costco in Richmond (definitely not a place to go on a Saturday) we were happily surprised to seeing several 800 ml jars of it (we bought two) for a very reasonable price.

Solid fish and chips with gluten free option (that had a dedicated fryer). Fast service and enough seating to find a spot even with it being busy-ish. Couldn't put my finger on why, but it wasn't a 5/5 in the flavor category. Definitely worth a stop if nearby.

Always good food & now more seating too Never a disappointment with this crew. Cheers

My first impression of this place was the appeal of their rustic decor. Both the food and the service were great. The menu has a good amount of options. I ordered a small amount of three items I wanted to try. I ordered the dairy-free chowder, oyster fritters and fish tacos. I enjoyed the fritters and tacos the most. I also tried some of my friend's fish and chips and the portions were very generous. I would recommend this place for fish and chip lovers.

I visited the fish counter on a Friday evening in search of some gluten free fish and chips, and wow they did not disappoint. The batter was comparable to a tempura style batter - very light and crispy. The tartar sauce was also very flavourful! From the time we ordered until we received our food was about 5 minutes even though there were other people in the shop. They were super fast in getting our order to us! There is one large table and some high top seats that face outside, so plenty of seating to choose from. I'm excited to come back and try some of the other fish or even the lox that they had - yum!

I was in Vancouver for a little bit of time, which was unfortunate because there are so many tasty food options to choose from. I opted to get some fish and chips from The Fish Counter. There were several fish to choose from, but I went with a two-piece of the Pacific cod. The fish was delicious and crispy. The breading was not overwhelming. I hope to return and try their other items. There are metered street parking. I found a small metered parking lot not far of a walk from the restaurant.

Good but the fries were too salty. I recommend telling them not to add salt. Add your own salt to your taste.

Be prepared to wait, and wait you will. Especially if it's a sunny day. 30 min to order your food, and then another 20-30 min to get it, depending on how busy they are. Outdoor seating only with a bunch of benches and a few tables. I already knew I was going to do take away, so I didn't need to jostle for a seat. Almost everyone else had to do the jostleing. Two piece cod and a salmon tacone. The cod was overcooked. The tacone was good. Fries were crispy and unevenly fried. Meaning some pieces were burnt a little. Still acceptable tho. Hence the 3 ***'s It was decent, but it didn't wow me. Maybe it was an off order day. I like my fish. You can smell the ocean near the pier. This was going to be a true test of the Fish & Chips quality here in Metro Vancouver…read more I had family visiting from the UK - the birthplace of fish & chips. I have Pajo's maybe once every couple of years, & so having visitors that were craving fish & chips - I recommended Pajo's. Located in the popular tourist area of Steveston Village in Richmond, Pajo's has been a pioneer of Fish & Chips in Metro Vancouver since 1985. There is even a location at the YVR Vancouver Airport in the food court near the photogenic - Jade Canoe. Get your fish & chips there before your flight takes off. Pajo's in Steveston Village is located right on the water - a floating restaurant. Seating is outdoors under patio umbrellas. Watch out for those pesky seagulls & crows. We tried the Wild Snapper & Wild Cod as well as the Fish Tacos. We added a bit of vinegar to the chips & voila - excellent. The fish are not too heavily battered, not too oily & tasted fresh. It's that crispy golden looking batter that really excites anyone having Fish & Chips. For some reason they were out of Salmon which would have been nice to try. Regardless, our UK visitors gave Pajo's two thumbs up.

The fish pieces are smaller than I remember. This time i got 2pc cod and chips. Service was pretty quick. Pricey, at around $24 but you get bottomless fries. The fish was moist, firm but flaky, and piping hot out of the fryer. Batter was a bit thick and greasy for my liking but at least it tasted fresh. Fries were fresh cut single-fried. Good when they're fresh and piping hot, but get soft and soggy really fast. Didnt taste too greasy though. Unsalted, which I like. You can always add salt yourself. The pricing is expensive but the bottomless fries make up for it a bit. There is ketchup, malt vinegar, hot sauce, and utensils on the side. Also a water fountain. If you go with say, a group of 3 and get a 3pc with bottomless fries, its not a bad deal. Just gets kind of greasy. Dont expect mushy peas or curry sauce/gravy or any other fixins like British fish and chips. food quality probably 3.5/5. Value if you take advantage of bottomless fries, 4/5. Its a nice place to hang out by the dock and have a quick bite, so accounting for the nice vibes, overall 4/5. Lots of free street parking in Steveston but you'll need to drive around hunting for an open spot during peak hours.

Of course, we also had to follow up with their Onion & Cilantro Naan! Our Mango Lassi tasted as expected and was smooth, soft, and delicate. That Chennai Chicken 65 was an amazing start to our meal, excellent seasoned and enough for three finger-lickin' tenders each! The onion & cilantro naan was tasty, though the toppings were easily masked by our curry and paneer. While both were only mild, they were both very tasty.
