If they're busy, and there's a line, somebody will come along and take your order and get your order started, so all you have to do is pay and then pick up your food, which is always fresh, tasty, and well-made. Sadly the change of ownership about two years ago has not had much in the way of positive results. Bit by bit the product on the plate is losing it's lustre & appeal and becoming very very ordinary. Whether that's because of a lack of talent in the kitchen or supply chain I can't say but I think I've given this operation it's last chance. As someone who ate here a couple times a month since the week it opened it's tough to think I'll never go back under the present management regime but given the critical issues with staff deportment and management neglect this place doesn't deserve anyone's money. I tried fish and chips and a side of clam chowder. The fish and chips were amazing but I feel like there was too much batter and not enough fish. The batter easily kept coming off. The clam chowder was okay, it had the texture of chicken noodle soup but without the chicken. I did see that it was dairy free and I still gave it a shot and was disappointed. This place was authentic! They sale fresh fish and condiments on one side of the store and the other side they make the best dishes with the fresh fish. We tried the fish and chips salmon, the tacos and a sandwish. Everything was so big and fulfilling. The tacos came with lots of veggies but the piece of fish was great. The sauce they put on it along with the mango salsa was fantastic. The fish and chips salmon was different, because it was white salmon never had it before, but it was still pretty good. The samdwish was big and the fish overflows the bread, but it was manageable to eat. The minus star was the set up on the place. There is no tables, except for a couple of benches and a bar overlooking the busy street. It felt small and crowded. There is only one restroom, to which you have to be walked to because is passed the kitchen area. I've been to the Fish Counter a few times. Decided to do a review this time. My gf and I go 2 pieces Pacific Cod and 2 pieces Ling Cod... We shared and my big thing was could I tell the difference between the deep fried and battered fishes! I could not tell the difference! When given a blind taste test to me they seemed to be identical! Fish Counter is pretty good, but for the money I would suggest fish and chip lovers try Cockney King Fish and Chips in New West! The bill at the Fish Counter came out to be over $60! I'd venture to guess a similar meal at Cockney would be 40 to 50 percent less! Cockney's is a true English style fish and chips that is the best I've had in the BC. We also had the non dairy clam chowder and a fried oyster. Both ok. Just nothing to write home about. I would say given its location The Fish Counter is pretty good. Their fish and chips certainly beats White Spot's fish and chips. Probably one of the better options within Van City. I'm English, and grew up eating fish and chips. I took my parents (who are in the mid 90's) in search of a more authentic experience than C Lovers offers. I am happy to report that at the new Edgemont location, everything was as it should be (sans the newspaper wrapping) and my parents, expecting disappointment, loved it! Unlike the competition, the batter, which, like it or not is crucial to fish and chips, was flavorful and crisp through and through, while the fish inside was soft and tender. As importantly, the halibut actually tasted like halibut, and the cod like cod; where normally the fish at its competitors is usually overcooked to disadvantage of both taste and texture; likely in service of cooking a less porous batter mixture that resists quick and easy crisping. The fish portions were generous (a single piece was sufficient where often it is not), and the chips were authentically crisp and lightly oiled to a deep-fried delight. I can't say how healthy any of it is, but as I mentioned, by parents have made it to there 90's without challenges to there health, and are still enjoying this simple and delicious treat. On occasion of wanting something "healthy", we've chosen to forego "fish and chips" rather than suffer a tepid experience of something that should 'be'...FISH AND CHIPS! Not much room to sit but you can snag a bench if you wait long enough. There's fresh fish and seafood to the left along with bread, snacks and other offerings. To the the right is where all the action is happening. There's a couple menus up. Fish and chips (four options), sandwiches and soups & salads. - Dairy free clam chowder ($5.95) - an abundance of mussels, chopped potato and corn. Not salty at all but well seasoned and hearty. - Salmonito ($9.10) - this was one of the workers favourite. We ended up saving this for later as we were stuffed. - Ling fish & chips ($12.86) - we were debating between the pacific cod and ling. We were told the latter was more fatty; I was instantly sold. After a long walk at the VanDeusen we stopped at this place for lunch. It wasn't too busy but once we had ordered, we realized that the little seating they had was occupied, which was a bummer. We had an order of cod fish tacos and they were pretty good! There were four to the order and pretty filling ended sharing with my husband. If you don't dig the cabbage so much, def try their fish cod and chips. The people seated next to us ordered that and looked very tasty and much bigger portion than ours. So many giving 4 stars for lack of being an eat-in establishment. Shouldn't be the case. It's not like it IS an eat-in who turns you away for lack of space. They have a little stand up along the window and sit down benches for waiting for the order to come up. The cod was gooooood. Huge portions. I thought at first it was pricey, but when I saw the size of the fish, I was set at ease. Next time, I'm getting the 3 piece and sharing with my husband. 2 meals in one. The first place my family hit when we came to Vancouver! The place only has a small counter to sit at, a bend, and a tiny table. I felt bad taking up the entire place with my party of 8, but regardless the food was delicious. We ordered the fish and chips (pacific cod, lingcod, and halibut), the oyster po' boy, and the salmon banh mi. Everything was amazing. By far, my favorite was the oyster po' boy. The outside of was a clean crispiness, while the inside was soft and warm. The outside wasn't too oily, nor was the oyster to fishy or chewy. The other elements of the sandwich killed it too. The kimchi, sauce, and bread gave a nice mix of texture, sweetness, and acidity. Of the fish and chips I had, I preferred the pacific cod. The pieces are large, probably 15+ cm long, which is good because this place is on the pricey side. Like the oysters, the outside was light and crispy and didn't fall away from the fish once you took a bite. The fish was perfectly cooked and flakey, not dry at all. My only complaint is that the fries were on the thin side and a bit too crisp. The banh mi was also delicious. The bread was nice and toasted and the pickled vegetables hit the spot. Obviously, it wasn't an authentic banh mi, but it was a wonderful and unexpected twist on one. The fish had great flavor and charring. Was introduced to this place by a coworker. Usually his taste in food disappoints but this time, it was on point. It is a bit pricey but for the portion and the taste, i would say its worth it. Love their Halibut and chip and the oyster poboy sandwich. If I had to rank it between the two, I love the oyster Po boy better probably because I usually prefer Oyster over fish and chips. The Halibut was super fresh made on the spot. One thing about this restaurant is that there is only one table and the rest is window side bar table without stool. I guess you can sit and eat. OR the other choice is to walk to a park and eat there. Parking is not difficult to find because its on Main street. I have to say if my friend didn't recommend this place, I don't think I will ever notice it. The fish batter was tempura-like which is good, but generally I have to say that fried fish doesn't really vary that much between places. That said, Cook's in Menlo Park, CA is better.
