Kept thinking just one more bite and then I will take it to go because after starting with the shrimp and grits I was getting full. Well the atmosphere was great, the waitress was extremely nice-- as well as everyone else-- but the food and the prices were... Way less than nice. Their Caesar salad consisted of four whole pieces of lettuce with anchovies, no dressing (or hardly any), and a sort of cheese thing... Keep in mind that was-- what?-- Ten dollars for those four pieces of romaine lettuce (that'll probably kill us all off anyways). I got the soup, and a whole bowl of it. Shrimp brisque or something... It sounded amazing... I wasn't impressed by what came out. First off, it was luke warm. Now it didn't taste absolutely terrible-- this coming from a hick that'll eat practically anything-- but I couldn't eat it all at once without wanting to be completely sick. Not only that, but I got about a teacup sized portion of soup (No, I did NOT get the cup of soup...). Though it's not like I was complaining after I tasted it. On the brighter side, their rolls and sweet butter was amazing, they had excellent tea, and the small bite of the rabbit pot pie I got was to die for. Plus everyone else's food-- though portioned extremely small and way over priced-- looked pretty awesome. So, this place is fine if you're not eating salad, soup, and like your food luke warm... The true test of a restaurant: what happens when you walk in just before closing. The Fork's website says they close at 10pm, so my boyfriend and I raced over after a movie, arriving at 9. The door sign said 'closed', but we went in anyway and asked what they had. The bartender told us the mains were no longer being served, so we started to leave... then she said we were welcome to look over the rest of the menu and could eat at the bar. We stayed -- best decision ever. Had a ridiculously good curried squash bisque, two amazing/creative salads, and shared a firebread (pizza). The food was fantastic, but the best part was the waitstaff being so friendly the whole time. We didn't feel rushed at all, and had an awesome meal that filled us up til noon the next day. Well worth the drive .. we'll definitely be back! read more

Oh yes. Yes please. I've only been here for brunch, but I will have to come back for dinner. This place is a quintessential "new american" style eatery (maybe a bit hipster in a good way?) with high quality ingredients and tasty offerings such as shakshuka, spatzle, beignets and more. I was pretty surprised to see all of those on the same menu, but when I saw the monte cristo on special, I know I needed to have it. The sandwich came in two pieces, perfectly crispy on the outside (fried like a french toast) and a neat assortment of cheese, two types of hams and strawberry jam inside. It was so well put together, I was really impressed. Guess what, they serve Smith tea! I had Portland flashbacks at that point. Portions are good and well measured (not too much), prices are a little bit higher than other places I've been to nearby, but for the location and the quality of food the price is right. I'm used to greasy spoon places in north Washington and was not expecting a little piece of Portland right here in Bellingham. read more

Very professional! The staff didn't miss a beat at this cozy, casual/intimate setting. The Bartender was on his game all night, checking in on guests, welcoming walk ins, all amidst mixing the perfect cocktails for his bar patrons, and ensuring courses served were on point and satisfactory. I went with my wife for Valentine's Day(day after); and although the tables were obviously booked up on a Saturday, we sat happily at the bar and had a fantastic dinner experience. If you're from a big city like Seattle or Vancouver, its worth the late nite backroad curves around the lake. I also highly recommend the Rabbit Pot Pie! read more

I have only been to The Fork for breakfast (3 or 4 times? I guess that is a good thing!) This time we came on Mother's Day....without a reservation...and we were as impressed have we have been in the past. The service was good (friendly, in spite as the place being busier than I have ever seen it) and the food was as good as ever. This is the kind of place I would love to run one day. The decor is evolving (for the better, more attention to detail, more nice touches), the menu is classic with modern touches, and the feel of the place is just, comfortable. I had the Breakfast Plate, as I have had before. Black beans with a couple of kinds of cheese on top and fantastic home-baked bread were the highlights. The homemade sausage patty's were fairly mild and the eggs were "meh", I've had better. The coffee is good and the service is friendly and prompt. Give The Fork at Agate Bay a try... Made our first visit to The Fork last night to celebrate my wife's Birthday. Now we wonder why we waited so long. A very pleasant experience to say the least. I have been to The Fork twice now and both times there have been moments of greatness as well as incompetency. BREAKFAST The first time I came here was for their Sunday brunch. I started with the chili soup which was served with cornbread. The soup was excellent. It wasn't as thick as chili but had the same flavors and perfect amount of heat. The cornbread however was nasty. It was flavorless, cold and extremely crumbly. I came with my parents and they had the steamed clams and huevos rancheros. Both dishes were pretty good. For dessert we all shared the beignets. Amazingly fresh and served with 3 decadent sauces, the beignets were definitely the highlight of the meal. Overall: 4 STARS LUNCH I came her again for lunch with my friend and ordered the ranch burger with goat cheese and a side of french fries. It took over 40 minutes for the food to arrive and when it did, my fries were already cold and my burger lukewarm. The fries were hand cut and very tasty so it was a shame that they had to be ruined by being served cold. I asked for the burger medium and it came more than well done. The burger could have been amazing because all the ingredients were fresh and high quality but the only choice of sauces available were ketchup and mustard?! No house made mayos or sauces, no pickles, no nothing. Had all the elements been there, this definitely could have been an amazing meal. This is a hidden gem. Every meal there has been more than I expected. Last night we lost our way trying to find our Airbnb. We found ourselves at The Fork and decided on staying for an apple while we asked for directions. Our server was Sam, formerly a cook in the kitchen, now promoted to being a server. He was above and beyond being a great addition to the front of the house, welcoming us and seating us, giving us his attention for the hour and a half we were there. Certainly not on the beaten path, this restaurant is the epitome of the phrase "Destination Location ". And WOW, is it worth the trip! We went in with almost no hunger, coming off a late sushi feast, and just ordered a few "Small Plates" - Shrimp and Cheesy Grits, Chicken Livers and Pears in mushroom Masala cream, Fried Green Tomatoes w/house Remoulade, She-crab Soup, and Lump Crab Cakes. Every dish was superbly prepared and presented, and the service from Owner David and the incomparably upbeat Lauren, sent the experience into orbit! A stunningly bad restaurant. Every step of the way this place lacks in the qualities of a fine dining establishment. It's is fantastically overpriced. The dishes are worth about 10 bucks a plate as opposed to the offensively high prices they post which should be reserved for the very best of places. This place is SO FAR from that. It seems as though the only thing they are working on in order to prove themselves as a restaurant are their prices. The rest of it tastes like they bought the ingredients at Costco and are making after school snacks for the customers. The fact that they are busy is an insult to the entire neighborhood and shows that there are way too many people in Bellingham that don't know what good food tastes like and they are willing to pay through the nose to eat crap. The mussels have some kind of balsamic monstrosity over them that makes them taste like ketchup mixed with fish sauce. It's like the chef hates mussels and tried to figure out a way to make them taste like macaroni and cheese with ketchup. Dude, if you want to know what mussels taste like, just take a trip to Provence and try them literally ANYWHERE and then decide how to present them to your lake people. The catfish was presented like fish sticks. Hot As F--- and overdone. Some how there was ham and pasta on the side of fishsticks with frozen corn? Is the corn frozen, or was I just too put out to be able to taste the one thing that might have been legit? Anyway, the corn doesn't matter, this is the worst place I've eaten in a decade. I know I'm from a place with amazing restaurants, but come on, this place is delusional if they think they are worth the prices they are charging. Here's a suggestion. $9.99 a plate and 2 for 1, and I still would never go back. I'm not even going to go into the waitstaff, but lets just say it seems like they know they are on a sinking ship and someone behind the scenes must be a real jerk, because they are cold and miserable and it rubs off on the customers. A flat bread with sausage and apples and a type of almond that had been crusted. But the most surprising of the lot was the shrimp and grits, whodathunk that a southern dish could be perfected so far north. Secret? carmelized slices of orange peel, luxurious! We were told the menu has changed 6 times in the past year, so you have that to go off of, but seriously, if you find yourself in Bellingham, take the drive around the lake and stuff your face, you'll be ever so thankful and impressed that you did! read more

Dinner on a Friday evening (early) , not a packed house, but pretty close. This was our first time here, a little fancier than we expected, but still on the comfortable casual side. Nice ambiance, greeted immediately and seated promptly in the dining room. Small but eclectic dinner menu, everything seemed well thought out, nothing overlapped in the entrée selections. Appetizer offerings on the menu were complimented by multiple specials. Nice selection of local beers and wines on the drink menu. We had a nice brucshetta, one of the specials, three pieces seemed odd (get it?), so we had to cut and split the last piece. We ordered a Fig and Kale salad and a seared King Salmon entree served with chick peas and chantrelle mushrooms. Both were very good, not huge portions, just right and prepared nicely. We skipped dessert although the waiter offered and recalled a good variety of options for us. The bill was quite reasonable and rivaled what we would have paid at a chain restaurant, but with far better, freshly prepared food. read more

Always a great meal, especially brunch on Saturday and Sunday. Wishing they were open all week. The crowning glory is, however, the absolute best burger in western Washington. New owners, full bar, great food! We stopped in for dinner last night and ate at the bar as we like to do. My wife and I shared several small plates. We had the Aracini which were nice and crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The Caesar salad was simple with a light dressing, fried capers and white anchovies. The shrimp and grits were delicious, creamy grits with perfectly cooked shrimp. I used to consider this my go to for a good meal and drinks. However in the last year they have severely declined. Last summer my wife and I would show up for drinks and apps at the bar. Usually between 4-5. We were turned away many times by staff claiming that they had reservations coming in about an hour. Ok. Well. We just don't go there on a whim. We made reservations last august. I ordered the special seared ahi. It was cooked to beyond done. Dry and weird colors. Hadn't been back till last night. 6 of us. The only food served hot was a pizza. I ordered medium rare rib eye. It was cold and served medium. Extremely thin cut and very chewy. I was charged $58 for a poorly cooked Walmart cut of beef. My wife had warm lumpy grits. This is not the place it was before they opened the second location. Good flavors forgetful wait staff last two times same waitress. Great mixed drinks competitive beer prices. I like the owner and hate to see this business slip into mediocrity. But I won't choose to go back. read more

Wow! Such mixed reviews would make me avoid The Fork. I have high expectations of restaurants that attempt to be fancier and I personally give The Fork at Agate Bay 5 stars. I'm in the area every summer & finally decided to try lunch in this funky little restaurant hidden in a land far, far away. Anna attentively served our table. The red ale was as good as one finds in a Belfast pub. I selected among some small plates & found everything to be perfectly fantastic. The shrimp & grits was as good as what I've found on the Georgia coast. I'd like to see a larger portion size if I wanted this to be my only entree. The lamb "lollipops" were delicious and I finally felt free to gnaw meet off the bone in a manner that is frowned upon for a polite middle-aged man. My wife's pizza had a perfectly baked crust, but the sauce could have been a bit more zesty & tomatoes sliced more thinly. The Fork has very limited hours but is definitely worth the journey into the wilderness. For my next visit, I might try the chicken--it appears to be the freshest in town. read more

Just short of a year ago, rolled in here post-Lake Whatcom hike for a $4 happy hour Ninkasi draft. Despite being a bit sweaty & well-underdressed, we managed a seat at the bar, where we tried flatbread w/ curried almonds, parm, homemade sausage, green apple. Not usually a fan of flatbreads, but whether is was my empty belly hollerin', or the curried almond+meat+apple combo...but this was good. Oh, and then there were pork belly sliders..whoa. Served with a Ruffles potato chip as big as the bun. I'm imagining someone in the back painstakingly sorting through the chip bag looking for the Alpha Chips. These were perfect...why aren't they served in a 10-sack? To round things out, we shared some balsamic greens with cherries and plums, fresh early August fruits. And we managed to slip out just as some well-heeled, suave reservations rolled in. Success! read more

We stopped in for breakfast after a walk on the Lake Whatcom Trail. The ambiance was welcoming, our server was friendly and attentive, and the food and beverages were a 10. I had the large mimosa and they fresh squeezed the OJ, delicious! My husband had the corned beef and hash, and said the biscuit was perfectly baked. I had the veggie, grits, and poached eggs and the meal was fantastic. The eggs were poached perfectly. We left asking ourselves, why don't we eat here more often?? The best biscuits and gravy I have EVER and I mean EVER had. The gravy is on the runnier side which I like cause there is less starches to thicken it and therefore no flour flavor at all. The bits of sausage were nice and tender too. Over the butttery biscuit it is absolutely delicious! Highly recommended! The scrambled eggs were perfectly scrambled - not at all dry and rubbery. The beignets were just eh for me. I have had beignets several times including Cafe du Monde in New Orleans and these were no where near as good. They were quite heavy when I would prefer them to be a bit lighter and more pillowy. I thought the trio of dipping sauces: raspberry, caramel (quite good) and chocolate (this tasted like Hershey's syrup :( ) were a nice touch. There is a nice feel to the neighborhood restaurant. The vibe is very relaxed (perfect for a Sunday brunch) and the menu has a good variety of options with fair prices. I would love to come and get a drink at the bar and then enjoy a nice dinner here sometime soon! read more
