This place has got major hype. Friends and co-workers everywhere were like "you gotta review the Front Door!" But then those same friends were like "you gotta review Flying Pie!" and Flying Pie was really mediocre. We didn't know what to expect going in. Honestly, we were more focused on making middle school jokes about eating at the Back Door. This place has a 'rustic' feel. There's a big focus on the bar. Tom asked for a Roy Rogers and specified he wanted grenadine and not cherry syrup. The bartender responded with, "aren't grenadine and cherry syrup the same thing?" Tom got T R I G G E R E D. Nah just kidding, he was fine, but he's told me a few times how much he dislikes when bartenders think they're the same thing and they serve him a cherry coke. Bartender was very nice by the way. He looked like a much sexier Thom Yorke. We got a medium 16″ pizza. Half Boss and half Wise Guy. Boss was like a fancy pepperoni. Wise Guy, not to be confused with terrible pizza place of the same name, was a mix of arugula, red onion, sausage, and salami. Pizza took 15-20 minutes and cost $17. -The Boss- Very high quality ingredients. Pair that with a reasonable price and large pizza, and you get nice value. The dough is excellent. Like a mix of flatbread and New York. Tom and I were both reminded of Allegrezza's. Peps are meh. They do the fancy, thick pepperoni thing that Tom and I aren't a fan of. Most important is the cheese. After doing some more research, I found out one of their signature things is using Grana Padano. This really adds an extra something that makes it stand out. -Wise Guy- All the ingredients were solid and mixed well. Sausage and salami were tasty. Again, the thing that stood out most was the bread and the cheese. Can probably drop the red onions. It doesn't feel like the red onions add much but can potentially bother picky eaters. -Verdict- I guess the hype was real. This place knows how to make a solid pizza. I don't think it's the best pizza we have ever had but it's up there. I really want to like this place and to be fair we've had some good experiences in the past. Our recent experience here was so bad it's going to be a long while before we give it another try. We sat down and waited for a server to come take our drink order. We waited and waited, trying to make eye contact with a server. For a while we debated leaving and going somewhere else- but I really liked the food before so we stayed. Finally one came by making excuses that they didn't see us. Fine, so we ordered drinks, appetizers, and food. It took a while until we got our drinks, then we waited for our food. After a long period of waiting for appetizers and food came out all at once. Our pizza had a piece missing- The server said they dropped it on the floor and they would give us a discount. Most of the pizza was not properly sliced - one slice was more than a 1/4 of the pizza, and it was very burnt. So by this time we were feeling bummed about this whole experience- but at least they said they'd give us a discount. Well we get our bill and of course there is no discount. Every part of this experience felt absurd. Just acknowledge your customers and don't drop their pizza. read more

I can't believe I've never reviewed this place. It's our favorite pizza joint in Boise and we think it's some of the best pizza we've ever eaten. Best crust in Idaho, for damn sure. We always do the goodfella, which is a pesto base and some nice veggies. They also have the best caesar salad I've had anywhere, hands down, which I know is an odd thing to brag about. This time, I tried the Thai peanut wings on a whim, instead of hot wings, and they are easily some of the most amazing wings I've ever tried. They do a good job on their beer list, but it can be hit or miss. It's always craft beer goodness. Wine list is decent, but this time I had a way-too-sweet red that I'd never drink again. The Front Door is my go-to drinking and dining location. Having frequented the place for a few years now, it has become a rather personal experience for me. I think of myself like Norm from Cheers there, but I'm sure that's crazy. Though, there is one patron that requests exactly three ice cubes in his water, so obviously I'm not the only off-centered guy there. To the review! I rarely order food beyond pizza, but I have enjoyed a few other menu items collaterally. The Front Door hosts dinners on occasion that are paired with hand selected beers (sometimes cellar releases). These multi-course dinners are fine dining involving intricate dishes and elegant desserts. There is often a brewer or representative from the brewery at said dinners. In addition the well-to-do brewer dinners, The Front Door features a lunch special. The lunch special is a delicious yet casual meal of a personal pizza with spinach salad or soup. The salads are in no way average. The tomato mozzarella with balsamic reduction salad is spectacular. The pizza holds its own. I've hit nearly every worthwhile pizza location in Boise and have found The Front Door to be in contention between my top three (Tony's and Casanova). The relatively thin crust is the perfect combination of being slightly soft, but crisp enough to support the glorious toppings. They have liquor of all sorts, but I go for the beer. I see some interesting libations... Rogue Brewery/Distillery whiskey, rum, and gin. They also have some scotches. The beer is kept at a standard. A number of locally made beers are usually on tap and the rest are typically rarities that are not available because of limited production or small distribution. You will not find Bud Light or any other low quality beer on tap. The staff takes care in the selection and choice of beer. The correct glasses are used for the style of brew and some are aged for full appreciation of the beer. I know this is starting to sound like an advertisement, but I simply love the place. In rebuttal of some of the sub-par reviews I would like to point out a couple things. The beers are sized in such a way that the price maintains an average. Less expensive or lower alcohol content beers are served in larger glasses to maintain a similar price. Beers sometimes only last on tap a week, and there are a dozen-ish taps, so knowing every beer and price is rather futile. Also, sometimes a 12oz pour is served in a 16oz glass to account for highly carbonated beers (or those on nitro). Understandably this can cause some confusion. But the thing that makes this place a 5 star is the food. Loved everything I ate and wanted everything that came out of the kitchen that I could see. I will tell you that it is a little hard to find but when you do its worth it! I learned about the happy hour from 3 to 6 daily where the appetizers are half price! It was (in comparison to all other downtown spots) really fast, cheap ($8/lunch before tip), and tasty. Me and my friends came here because one of us had been to Boise before and really wanted to return. Man am I wicked glad she made us come here. First of all - GREAT selection of beers! No Budweiser crap here. It was all microbrews or tasty tasty imports with alcohol contents high enough to make a drunk fall over after one glass... Secondly, their fresh pizzas are the best that I have had anywhere West of New York City. Made as soon as you order them with fresh tasty ingredients and baked just long enough in a well seasoned Pizza Oven. Man oh man are they good! I got the Santana pizza, woo! What a tasty little pie! It has roasted red pepper sauce, with pepperoni and mozzarella and I don't even remember! Wicked Good, that is all I need to know. AND - the service is wonderful and the prices are reasonable for what you are getting, which is fresh food and great beer. I never knew that I would find a restaurant in Boise, Idaho and love it so much. This has to be the best restaurant that I have found in my month long journey from Washington, DC. Visiting Boise on Business, looking for my Pizza and Beer Fix and after looking at the ratings and reviews on Yelp, the Front Door was chosen and took care of both. Great staff, super attentive during the entire meal to make certain we were satisfied with everything. Also made great suggestions for the extensive Craft Beer selection based on our tastes as well as the beers included in the Happy Hour Specials. Had the 16" Wise Guy and the crust was thin and tasty. The crust could have been a little bit crisper but my Business Associate and I didn't have any trouble demolishing it. Tomato sauce is very good, nice spice, not too sweet and toppings adequate. Also had the Caesar Salad which had fresh crispy Romain, just the right amount of Ceasars dressing with great "made fresh at the table" taste and only a few croutons. Haven't had Pizza at any other places in Boise to compare but would recommend it to others if asked. read more

We came here for our night before Thanksgiving pizza tradition. Pizza was, as my previous review stated, phenomenal. Since we dined in this time, we were able to sample their cocktail menu. Seriously delish and deceptively strong (ie: tastes so lovely you don't realize you are rapidly getting downright drunk). I ordered their Lemonhead Martini, which was brimming with sweet lemony goodness. I also had their Red panties martini, which was a tropical delight. The atmosphere is cozy (lovely for a cold snowy evening) and the place has an overall friendly vibe. Our waitress was perfect (she was also our bartender and, let me tell you, she mixes a mean martini! I wish I could remember her name...)--we had a fairly large party (eight of us in all) and she did a wonderful job of keeping up with us all. I have not one single thing to complain of. Overall, this is a marvelous place for any time of year but especially marvelous for a cold winter's eve. Get to it! read more

I'm surprised I haven't reviewed the Front Door since it's basically my second home, well...atleast when I'm craving an excellent Neopolitan style pizza, imported beer and a delicious salad. I can't even explain all the things I've had there... I won't even try. If you're a meat person, try the Enforcer but on focaccia with a balsamic reduction instead of the regular way. If you like plain, old cheesy bread with marinara, try theirs, the sauce is awesome and the portion is too! I like the Caprese salad and the Mutz pizza too... Just try it out and you'll see what I mean. For the price point (personal pizza and salad for under $5 - nuh uh!), it's perfect for a quick bite, a pre-cursor to a night at the Reef, or a munchfest AFTER a night at the Reef! So, we've been to 4 pizza places in town so far and this is the best and has the best prices. The Cobb Salad was delicious, the beer was not too cold and stuff you don't taste anywhere else (in a good way) and the pizza was really quite delicious. I lived in NY for 10 years, so I feel like I know what I'm talking about. It's the kind of crust that has corn meal on it. Really chewy and tasty. Not too thick, just right. Passing through on a roadtrip, we decided on pizza for the night and checked Yelp for highly rated restaurants. We ordered a personal size Thai based on other user comments, and a medium size cheese pizza along with a caesar salad. The salad was good, albeit a bit small for the price. The Thai pizza was really quite good. I liked the cheese pizza well enough, though the sauce was a bit sweet for my taste. I took it to go, and while stopping in got to see the atmosphere. I love that many places in Boise offer a personal size pizza. This was very uncommon in Seattle so we usually had to decide on a pie to split. Now I can create my own...a little slice of heaven! The place was packed last night with 2 servers working the room. Service was uneven but we weren't in a hurry and we could see how busy they were so were understanding. All of our food came out at once (garlic bread, Caesar salad and 2 personal pizzas...JP did the Wise Guy and I built my own with portabella mushrooms and red onion). The crust is great! Boise's bar for beer snobs. You won't find much of the beer here anywhere else in town save for the Co-Op, and only here will you find some of them on tap. Ask for a watered-down offering from one of the country's macrobrews and you will surely and deservedly be taken out back to be tarred and feathered. It's a venue to appreciate the taste and the work taken into making beer. This is hands down the best place to go drinking for Oktoberfest, as different German brews are shipped in for the occasion. The pizza is quite good, and the options available are interesting and intriguing. There is better pizza to be found in Boise, but I would still say it deserves to be in the bottom portion of the Top 5. Met a friend here for a late lunch - we shared the personal-sized Thailand Express and The Boss. They were bigger than I thought they would be, so the add-on salad for $2 isn't really needed! We were the only ones in the restaurant (like I said, late lunch), so our food was to the table in under 10 minutes. Both pizzas were delicious - I appreciated that the cilantro on the Thai pizza was added fresh, and the cabbage was a nice touch. The Boss was equally tasty - thick-cut pepperoni and chopped basil - can't go wrong there! LOVED the crust - chewy and crunchy without being burnt. The beer selection LOOKED good - but that'll have to wait until a non work hours visit. :-) All in all - very impressed - great pizza at an even better price - will definitely be back! read more

This is a great small eatery and bar. I think the whole place only sits 20-30 people, but it's casual and comfortable. There are TV's to watch the game to go with the fantastic food. My wife had the hummus plate and I got the pizza. Both dishes were spot on. Good service and perfect little local restaurant. Why only 4 stars? The restroom opens right into the eating area. It was a little awkward in a place that small because a guy was standing by the door and waiting to use it next, just a few feet from where we were enjoying our dinner. read more
