The wife and I had dinner here before a play. We started with the PEI mussels, which were surprisingly good this far from the ocean. Some were not fully opened and this should have been monitored better, but, again, this isn't exactly a seaside town so I apply a lower standard. The use of a vindaloo sauce was excellent and the dipping bread was good, although a couple more slices of it would have been nice. I ordered the venison burger medium rare and it was very good. I am aware of Yelp reviews stating that it is too dry. That was not a problem I had. The only issue I had was that the bun fell apart and I had to finish the final third with knife and fork. The wife ordered the fried pheasant special. I tasted it and liked it. She said that some parts were dry, perhaps due to frying and uneven cooking. She did not like the pickled peach slices that came with the pheasant, they were over-pickled. For drinks, the wife ordered a negroni before dinner. Not my favorite drink. She liked it but said the pour was weak. Service was excellent throughout the meal. The server obviously likes working there. read more

Over by the bean yet again for dinner. This time, we're at The Gage. We made reservations and were seated right away once we arrived at the restaurant. We were able to sit outside on the patio and it was so nice to relax with the breeze gently blowing. This restaurant had some really delicious food! We ordered the colossal prawn cocktail, 10 oz Filet, and the buffalo cauliflower. The shrimp cocktail was delicious and had 4 massive prawns on it. The filet was delicious and I originally ordered green beans but they were out, so I opted for the cauliflower. I wasn't really a fan of it. All in all, we had a great meal here. read more

It was a rainy evening in Chicago..., no it really is. The food is very good, the mgmt is pretentious and the atmosphere is as well. The food is good/ Caesar salad was very good- fish and chips were average- the peanut butter cake was really nice/ but you can do better in this town. I ate here because it was highly recommended on yelp, but I tend to disagree. Some much better offerings in the Gold Coast area- so do your homework and find something worth your time and money. And if they're full, you can sit at the bar and not worry about booking a reservation through open table. I shudder to think if I had tried to use an opentable voucher how well that might have gone. I can now get over the trauma of one of my last visits when the kitchen ran out of lobster rolls when I had my heart set on it! At this brunch outing, 4/6 of us ordered the lobster roll, as we were reminded to try the Gage's version after a recent Chicago lobster roll article we saw. At $23 for the entree, the size of the portion surpassed my expectations, but the execution on the roll fell short. Rather than serve as the star of the dish, the lobster was hidden, both physically (hidden under a bed of onion strings) and by the chives, celery, and other mix-ins. Chips were the side to the lobster roll, and you get a heaping serving. I would have preferred more lobster... and present in meaty chunks at that vs. the shredded kind of form. Seems like the Gage really made out on the margin on this dish. read more

The Gage is located in a great location for anyone visiting the Art Institute, the Chicago Symphony, or Millennium Park. The interior is very nice and the bar is inviting, but we ate a table for lunch. The prices are reasonable for the area and it offers a very nice wine list. I had the fish and chips while my brother had the turkey club and soup. The fish was excellent, very tender with a nice beer batter coating and fried perfectly. The presentation was also kind of cool, in rolled up newspaper. The fries were really tasty also. My brother did not enjoy his food as much. He liked the Turkey Club (although they included onions which he asked them to remove) but the soup was kimd of bland. He also had some odd service. For some reason they took his soup spoon when they brought a steak knife (which he did not need). For dessert, we had this apple crumble and frozen yogurt that was heavenly. A great place to get a above average brunch or early dinner with a friend or loved one. Went around 3pm on a Sunday and it wasn't obnoxiously crowded or stuffed. Of course, it's in a memorable area surrounded by Chicago staple attractions such as; the Art Institute and Millennium Park. For atmosphere, it's a very low-lit establishment that gives off an upscale pub feel with classic touches throughout. Of course, you can easily watch the game at the bar or enjoy a nice meal privately away from the bar with close friends. The Gage was the perfect unexpected find that made our first meal in Chicago one that was truly memorable. After arriving on a late flight, traveling from the airport to our hotel and walking around aimlessly trying to find a restaurant open later in the evening 9pm? 10pm? We were so happy to have found The Gage within walking distance from our hotel. We were quickly seated and offered an amazing selection of fine cocktails to choose from. I can't remember at the moment but I ordered something that was fruity with a nice smoky finish..whatever that drink was, it was amazing. Our server was great. I feel horrible I can't remember his name but he was very knowledgeable about the menu. After consulting with him regarding our desire for veggies, something not too heavy, but will fill our tummies, he made a nice suggestion of ordering 2 veggies and a protein plate to share. From memory, we had the green beans, which the BF devoured and loved. I believe there were cashews on there and some sauce that was to die for. We also shared the eggplant dish which I loved. the egg plant was sooo flavorful. Lastly, we share their braised roast chicken. The chicken was surprising very moist and complimented the veggies well. The server even offered us an order of the wedge salad when we miscommunicated or desire to order the item, but the item didn't make our meal ticket. It was good--nice chunky pieces of bacon. I stopped by with some friends for lunch on a Thursday - great spot if you're around Millennium Park/The Bean. As soon as we walked in, we noticed the vast majority of the customers were dressed up and looked like they were there for business meetings. Before we were seated, we got a couple of drinks at the bar - we had the Livin's Easy cocktail, which was perfect and refreshing after we had been outside. When we were seated at the booth, we shared three dishes - crispy drumsticks, poutine, and the grilled peaches salad. The drumsticks were decent, the poutine was a bit soggy but flavorful, and the grilled peaches salad was very good and fresh. I have been to The Gage many times and always enjoy it. Tonight was a very special event and we had a fairly big party. They thoughtfully put us in the most quiet part of the restaurant so we would be able to really enjoy our conversations. Our server Paulo was an absolute delight, so attentive, friendly and efficient. He engaged with us and made great suggestions and the food is always delicious. Our party began with cheeseboards and mussels vindaloo. The mussels vindaloo is a classic dish that isn't always on the menu but the kitchen team knows people go crazy for it and they were kind enough to make us two rounds. The entrees at our table included the coconut curry, venison burgers steaks, the Brussels sprouts, roasted carrots and of course mussels. We came here last night and it was phenomenal. It was a little pricier than expected but worth every penny. The whole place has a dark and cozy atmosphere. If you are into a relaxing ambiance this is it. The front of the restaurant is more of a busy noisy bar while the back of the restaurant becomes a but not intimate and hushed. They didn't have an extensive wine list but they seemed very selective about the ones they did carry. I liked this. Each one was specifically selected. I had the Shiraz. Not something I normally order but I told the waiter what I like and to bring me a glass of something that would please my tastebuds. He did good! We started with the calamari. Not your typical calamari. It was sautéed and laid over whipped potato and surrounded by a moat of chili sauce. This was honestly the best calamari I have ever had. Fried calamari is over rated. This was delicious. Next we shared the beet and burratta salad. How have these two never been paired before. This was AMAZING and I could quite possible eat it everyday if I had consistent access to good burratta. Yum! For dinner I had the scallops. I really didn't care for the bed of sweet potato and lentils that came with. It added too much sweet to a dish I would rather have a bit salty. But the scallops were amazing and I ate every bite of those. I honestly don't know how we passed up dessert. Everything sounded good and I really wanted to try the chocolate banana bread pudding... however... Chicago seems to be a late night city and I just couldn't hang past 11:30. If you are in the city, you MUST try this place out. It was phenomenal and it will be the first place o go on my next visit. read more

Our appetizer never made it to the table which was disappointing as we'd been told the House Poutine was something of a renowned dish. They also cleared my cocktail well before I was done but since I was engaged in convo I didn't have time to stop her. My wife had a beet salad with oranges. It needed salt but was nice. I love The Dawson with all my heart and would go there every day if I could since I lived three blocks away and it was my favorite place for five years. Now let's talk Gage since they share ownership/ mama. This restaurant has consistently great service, a really good vibe, and it's only six blocks away from me. So I have to go there more than anywhere else now! Really cool vibe, really beautiful bar, great for a cocktail after work, over business, or my favorite great place for a date! Had a decent first experience at The Gage today for lunch. Tried some fried pickles for appetizers, which were OK. Then for my lunch I had this Thai Coconut Curry. It was kind of OK. I think there was probably not enough spice and maybe it was a mistake to get a Thai entree at a this place. They also had a veggie black bean burger, which looked good. Maybe I'd try that next time. Overall the service was good and we got plenty of water refills, etc. One thing I found annoying is the busboy and water stepped on my shoes at least 3-4 times. It's been a long time since we were here, so I thought we'd try again. Things started off terribly as we waited more than 30 minutes past the time of our reservation to be seated. The hosts did give us a free drink while we waited, which was nice. Once seated we were happy to have a booth - which resolved the issues we had in the past as this place is totally loud. We started with the oysters and poutine. Oysters were great, and I liked the poutine, but the husband thought it was too spicy. Husband got the wedge salad and liked it a lot - the dressing was fantastic. I had the fish and chips for my main and this was delicious and perfectly cooked. Husband had the filet - perfect as well - and the chips (curry sauce on the side which I liked but again he thought was too spicy, lol) We had a bunch of drinks as well - total bill was $220 before tip. Went here with a friend on Sunday for lunch (brunch) and it was a pretty good experience. There was no wait and the service was great. A guy brought us water, before our waitress came to take our drink order, almost before we could take off our coat to sit down. Friend and I both ordered our meals and both arrived quickly and were good and hot. Great quality and taste from us both. Also, prices a little high some say, but for the amount of food and quality, it is well worth it. We stopped by during brunch hour, and was surprised by how many people there were in the restaurant. We sat down, took a look at the menu and kind of found out why. The brunch dishes are very cheap. It's like the price point of TGI Friday or red lobster, maybe even cheaper. We ordered the scotch egg. The egg is very good, but maybe not quite as good as I expected after seeing literally thousands of review saying how good it is. I did not like the spring asparagus salad, but only because it has some kind of goat cheese in it, which I hated a lot. The lobster roll is decent. You get a lot of lobster. I will say you get what you pay for the lobster roll. The venison burger is pretty good. It has a strong spicy flavor that I love, and juicy patty.
