Fun speakeasy located above the Five Guys with a nice lounge vibe/interior. There's a long bar and then a couple of smaller tables for groups of 2/4 people. To enter, you have to walk all the way to the back of the Five Guys and go up the stairs. The fun part is that you're able to bring Five Guys from downstairs into the bar. Or grab some cheap eats on your way out. We came on a Monday at 7pm, and there were a few other tables. No reservation needed. Pricey drinks but normal for new york speakeasy price range. For 4 drinks the bill after tax and tip came out to be $100. There is a small menu of creative cocktails as well as the standard bar list available. The bartender was attentive and prompt. Our waters were refilled multiple times unprompted and asked if we wanted a second drink right after I finished my first one. A bit surprised that it's such a low rating, but probably because we didn't come on a weekend when it can get more packed. Was here on a Sunday night. I was so excited to try this place out after coming across their holiday-themed pop up (especially the alpacas) on idktonight's Insta. I got the chiquito poquito which was interesting. It was basically fireball, but a cocktail instead of a shot and it was topped off with a lot of whipped cream. I unfortunately forgot the name of the drink my friend got (came in the cute Santa mug) but it had all sorts of spices like cardamom and it was very warm. Perfect drink for a cold night out. Don't go here if you're a woman. As other reviews mention, the bartender has a weird vendetta against "young women." I knew immediately, before I even said anything, he didn't like me. I thought he was having a bad day but after reading the other reviews, it's a pattern. It only got worse. I never leave reviews, but this was that bad. He was rude, combative, condescending, and creepy. He returned everything I said with an eye roll or disgusted expression. He heard me ask my friend how much they tip on drink orders (especially given the bad service), and the bartender berated me from *across the bar* about how 20% is typical and if you're a "regular, normal" person you tip 20%. I told my friends we were "here" when we pulled up to the five guys and they were baffled! I had a reservation for 10 people on a Sunday night, right around New Years. It was definitely needed because it was packed! However with our reservation for 10, they gave us the little private room! This made the experience perfect! Definitely a less traditional/modern speakeasy as they played 2000s music, it was loud, and if we were out of the reserved room, it gave off typical bar vibes. I would go back for a big party as the private room was perfect! (It is next to the bathroom and divided by a curtain so people kept accidentally popping in--my party thought it was hilarious but just giving y'all a heads up) There was no charge for this room other than an included tip, which the bartender let us know about. The drinks on the menu were more unique and "old-timey" but they have common drinks like espresso martinis and aperol spritz. You do have to order your drinks at the bar, but it was not a bother at all. Maybe it was always a spot for yuppies, and European transplants, but the raucous vibe covers up the fact that this is too narrow to be a club while being pricey af. Only good place to stand/chill is the back room. Beware: The bartender can be outright rude and explicitly ignore your drink order (it look liked this was directed only towards young women...maybe no coincedence the late-night bartenders were white dudes, with grungy, skater vibes and too much willingness to take shots with guys in fleece vests). The Garret welcomes you with an array of music: including R&B, Hip Hop, Rap hits (old and new). I enjoyed their different selections of unique cocktails. My favorite is the Jon Wick Experience, which I would compare to an Old Fashioned but the JWE definitely takes the cake. This bar does not have a food menu but you are welcome to bring your own. I've always heard alot of hype about The Garret - a speakeasy above a Five Guys. After finally visiting, I do think that this is a pretty sweet cocktail bar. I just wasn't that impressed with the 'secret speakeasy' vibes. It's literally just a bar on the second floor of a building that happens to have a Five Guys on the first floor. Maybe the whole 'above a five guys' thing isn't as exciting to me as it is to others. In any case, The Garret is still a super cool bar and is worth visiting. The inside is dark and mysterious. Two top tables and dim lighting make it a great spot for a date. My fiance and I had dinner reservations in the area and decided to grab a quick pre-dinner drink. He ordered an old fashioned and I ordered a gin cocktail -- both were delicious and refreshing. The bar was pretty crowded and we were able to snag the last two spots in the place. This was on a Wednesday at around 7, so I'm sure it's usually pretty crowded here. It's not a huge space either. We were in and out pretty quickly, so not much else to say. Amidst the many cocktail bars that line the streets of the West Village, The Garret is certainly worth a visit. The Garret is the speakeasy above from Five Guys in the west village. It's unmarked except for a neon sign that reads "soul" from the window on the second floor. You enter the bar by walking to the back of Five Guys (past the cashiers) and then making a sharp U turn to a random staircase that leads upstairs. When you get upstairs you'll find a bar and some small tables and couches. They have a list of signature and classic cocktails as well as a beer menu. They don't serve food and to be honest I'm not sure about their policy on bringing in outside food. It would be awesome if you could bring your Five Guys meal upstairs to enjoy with your drink. The bathroom is a drunk's worst nightmare: it's filled with decoy gold knobs that look just like the real one. If you aren't alert enough, I'm not sure if you'll be able to make it out! They also have a back room that's more intimate and apparently fair game to anyone in the bar. It looks like it has a projector inside so I wonder if they screen movies in there. I understand the other reviews about the coldness of the bartenders. Ours wasn't the most cordial. I do applaud them on their music choice though. 3.5 rounded to a 4. My friend and I came across a recommendation for this place because we were looking for a bar in the area, and didn't realize it was a speakeasy, so had a fun time trying to find the entrance. We walked past the Five Guys twice before getting the lightbulb moment that it could possibly be inside. Once you wade past the smells and grease of a burger joint, you can find a line and a bouncer in front of the staircase. The line's near the bathrooms for the Five Guys, and the highlight of my night was when the girl in line behind me tapped me on the shoulder and asked why we needed to be carded to go to the toilet. Once we made it into the bar itself, we realized it was quite crowded; we had to wait a bit before we could snag seats. The vibe was very interesting, and I liked the fancy ceiling and the view of the outside. Cocktail-wise, I got the first lady, and my friend got the Refinery 63. The combination of matcha, egg white, and lemon in my drink made for an interesting taste, though I was more impressed with the fermented pineapple in my friend's drink. I really enjoy coming to the Garret. It is such a fun and unique experience for new yorkers and visitors alike. Walk straight through the 5 guys to the very back left corner where you will find a stairwell to the second floor. That's when the fun begins! Grab a drink menu (and a table if you can find one)! I love the decor in here. Older architecture with amazing ceilings, brick walls and fireplace. The art is a bright and fun mix of painting and pictures. There is a great skylight and nice windows to let the light in when you day drink post brunch like us. The staff have always been friendly and willing to recommend drinks, even when it is a little busy (which it definitely can be). I love the First Lady. It is wonderfully refreshing and I have started off multiple trips here with that as a cocktail. I branched out last time and got a norse whisperer, which was beautiful and very tasty. All of their drinks are pretty unique and I have yet to know anyone who disliked any they ordered. Once you've had your fill, WATCH YOUR HEAD ON THE WAY DOWN. Cool hidden place above the five guys in west village. Unfortunately it did not work for our party of 7 due to being overcrowded. It got packed on Friday night so we could not talk until we were able to get a seat once another group left. I could see enjoying it more as a smaller group- but I probably would not return with so many great choices nearby. The bartenders also circle on the check/try to enforce the 15%/20%/25% tip amount- pretty aggressive for a two minute beer transaction. I feel that's more appropriate for a full service restaurant but I'm always happy to tip more. This is the speakeasy that's above a Five Guys. You go through the restaurant toward the back, and there's usually someone sitting there who will either wave you upstairs, make you show your ID, or tell you it's too crowded and you have to hang out and wait. We were given the wave up and went straight to the bar. My partners in crime ordered Vodka Sodas or Manhattans or something classic like that. I spotted this slender foamy green drink that looked just lovely and pointed to it and said, "I'll have that." No clue what it was, but later found out it was called The First Lady, and it has matcha green tea (call me basic, but cue *heart eyes*). The place was rollicking on a Friday evening, and we even spotted a few people that we saw at the place we were at before (Bandits). Again, later I found out they share the same owner, so maybe that's why? Anyway, a nice couple offered us their AMAZING corner couch seats as they were leaving, so we could enjoy our drinks, our bubbly conversations, and also a great view! Overall, we had a great experience, and I would love to come back. So-so drinks. And for too much money. Normally, when I come to a craft cocktail bar, i usually expect to have a great drink or two that's been perfected by the bar's mixologist. Not here.
