The General Public was really nice inside. And we went in the middle of the week, so it was quiet as well. We had a great time with our friends. The server was great. She was very helpful. She did forget a few things throughout the dinner, but she quickly brought whatever she forgot. I was a little disappointed because I had looked at the menu on Yelp before I went to make sure they had something I would enjoy. I found a green chili grilled cheese that looked amazing. We were at The Rim area last Saturday and decided to have dinner @thegenpub. They have happy hour throughout the week, even on weekends. The bummer news is that their happy hour no longer includes food items. I guess it's cost-prohibitive now with everything getting more expensive. Hubby had the House Rita Rocks and I had the Tiki Punch. We shared the Crispy Empanada, Spinach Artichoke Dip, Shrimp & Avocado Salad, and Fish & Chips. The General Public has an amazing Happy Hour with great drink specials and appetizers. On this particular visit we stuck to the Happy Hour menu and it created a wonderfully filling meal. With plenty of seating at the bar and in the dining area, there was plenty of space. The serving system is efficient so our food was out quickly shortly after our drinks. The food was so good from the gigantic Bavarian pretzel to the Brussel Sprouts, it was all fantastic. For a great Happy Hour experience, I highly recommend The General Public. read more

I came here for a recruiting event. Their appetizers are pretty good. We tried the skewers that have mozzarella balls, cherry tomatoes, and a drizzle of balsamic sauce. They also have fried empanadas. There's also these buffalo chicken meatballs, but the sauce is a little too acidic for my liking. I really liked their Yuzu Sprite mocktail drink. You can really taste the tart slightly bitter taste of the yuzu. I also tried a peach whiskey drink, and I realize I do not like whiskey. The servers are nice and attentive and very patient. We started with the artichoke dip and we got the $12 dollar lunch special fish and chips. It was a generous basket and the fish was so crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. I loved it. As for the General Public, well if you are a brunch and mimosa person this is a great location! $1 mimosas before 3pm! Service was really good, friendly and attentive. We also ordered cinnamon French toast that was really great, the cream they are topped with is really light. I don't know why General Public isn't packed every day because it's honestly a hidden gem in plain sight. We always come here for the chicken Caesar salad because the way they prepare the chicken is so good--honestly, I can't figure out how they make it so tasty, so I just have to come here to enjoy it! Their ribeye sandwich is also incredible and usually my go-to, but this time I tried the chicken apple sandwich. It was good, but it could have used a bit more flavor, maybe a garlic mayo or something like that. I'll probably go back to my usual ribeye sandwich next time. Also, you must try their empanadas because they are so good. Their happy hour drinks are an amazing deal, and the lunch specials are great as well. We always get good service when we come. I wanted to try General Public's Restaurant Week dinner menu, but I couldn't find a kids menu online so I called to confirm there were kids options. The phone rang for 2.5 minutes and no one picked up the phone. I still decided to drive to the restaurant and give it a try. As we walk in the hostess is walking to the host/hostess stand and I ask for a booth, but let her know we need to go to the bathroom first. A few minutes later, we are back at the hostess stand and I see the hostess enter the back kitchen. No one is at the hostess stand so we wait. I watch the servers all performing their single task. One person looks up at me for spilt second and then goes back to their task. It's just after 5pm and the restaurant is less than half full. We wait and wait. I pick up a menu and review the options. At some point I realize this wait is ridiculous and I walk up to the bar and ask the bartender if someone can seat us. She asks someone walking by to help us and we are sat. I confirm there are three kids options, however a menu doesn't exist. The girl that sat us took our drink order and when she returns we are ready to order. We've had plenty of time to figure out what we wanted to order and are hungry. She explains she is not our server, so we wait. Eventually our server appears, takes our order but leaves all the menus on the table. Somewhere between receiving the appetizer and the entree, the menus that were on the edge of the table were picked up. I noticed other tables that were there before us still had their menus on their table as well. I know the menu left on the table is a little thing, but it takes up space on the table and it's all part of the experience. The only reason I gave this experience two stars was because I enjoyed the food and once our server came to our table, things were good. My child on the other hand loves grilled cheese and tried her meal and instantly said "I don't like it." I got her to eat a few bites, but I knew I would have to find her something else for dinner. I enjoyed the crab hushpuppies as an appetizer. While you don't see or taste crab, the flavor is great. I also enjoyed the coffee rubbed steak and potatoes. The lemon/blue berry dessert was not as good as I anticipated. Overall, the Restaurant Week offering was pretty close to the same price if I would have ordered everything off the menu, so it wasn't much of a cost savings. Will I return? Not likely. We frequent the Rim and La Cantera restaurants and can have a better experience elsewhere. read more

We visited on a whim to try their Culinaria restaurant week menu and it was probably the best RW menus I've tried, other than Bliss restaurant in south town. I started with crab hush puppies which were excellent, like a savory donut hole with amazing dipping sauce. Didn't taste crab but the flavor was still fantastic. My husband had the Kung pao lettuce wraps which were just ok imo. For mains we had the harvest bowl which was very healthy and tasty per my husband and the chicken frites which was excellent. I was at the bar trying my best to call the bartender while they asked other patrons next to me if they needed anything (they didn't they had drinks/food I had none) and would look down on the floor when looking towards me. I know I might not fit the demographic that is the Rim but I've lived in SA for a bit now so I always try to find the positive and i really could not at this establishment. The General Public is a great spot at the Rim. They have one of the best happy hours out there and that's saying a lot. The happy hour cocktails are good and they start at $3 if you're early enough. They max out at $5 if you get there in between 5pm and 6pm. The happy hour bites are delicious and they will fill you up. They always change up the tots of the day and that keeps them interesting. I always receive great customer service and I wanted for nothing. The General Public is a place I highly recommend to anyone that is near the Rim and it's definitely worth the drive if you're aren't. read more

Cool concept. The Smoke Show Old Fashion w/ Woodford Reserve was good. That as popular at 12noon as I expected on a Saturday. I ordered a Ribeye Steak sandwich halfway through my Old Fashion. It was....okay. The Steak seemed boiled or Souvide. The pretzel bun wasnt the best vessel for this shaved meat onion sandwich. This definately needs to be served on a kaiser or potato bun, to prevent from falling apart like mine did. The pretzel bun would have been better outfitted for a bratwurst. We partook of the restaurant week menu and one friend ordered from the regular menu. There were crab hushpuppy orders, stuffed mushrooms, hot fried chicken, chicken meatballs, spinach, and artichoke dip, and kung pao lettuce wraps for our appetizers. We also ordered two beef tenderloin entrees, I had the salmon, and my friend had the fish and chips. There was plenty of food, to say the least. We really enjoyed the meatballs, salmon, beef tenderloins, and fish and chips. We really liked all of the appetizers except for the stuff mushrooms. We did not like the cream cheese filling. The staff was very attentive and took care of all of our needs. I am surprised that i had not been here sooner, considering it is not that far from me.
