The first thing I noticed about The General Public was the interior decorations - it has such a cozy vibe! You know you can trust a place for brunch when they have a separate brunch menu, which this place does. Also, they have $1 mimosas or $15 bottles with different types of juice - pineapple, orange or strawberry! I ordered the Sunny enchiladas, which were really flavorful and cooked to perfection! My only complaint would be there was only 1 enchilada - I definitely anticipated there being 2 in there. I am eager to come back and try their full lunch menu sometime soon! We were hanging out at the rim and decided to go to the general public for drinks and 'supper'. We sat at the bar and asked the bartender where the oysters came from. He had no idea. We asked if they were flown in fresh every day. He said yes. We asked if it was every few days and he said yes. He seemed to have no idea about the oysters but we took a chance. It was a definite risk. We each had one oyster and they were horrible. So fishy we couldn't eat any more as we were afraid we were going to get sick. The bartender took them back and removed them from our tab. We then decided on steak. We said who could mess up a steak? Well, obviously they can. It was tasteless and came with a dollop of butter that just congealed. I asked for steak sauce and they said they didn't carry any and would make me some. Never order the steak. Tasteless and bland. We took a few bites and left it on the pla On a positive note, the fries were good as was my mule. We will probably never go there again and know that we will not be missing out on anything. Go somewhere else, anywhere else for good food. Update: Corporate Office reached out to me. Said they were going to do more training with staff. Would like another chance. I went there about 3 weeks ago, and could not have been more disappointed. I tried reaching out directly to the company expressing my concerns, but never heard back, so I will make my concerns public. It was a Saturday afternoon, before any rush. There were only 3 people sitting at the bar, and only 5 tables with customers. There was plenty of staff as they were gearing up for another Saturday night. If I had been a health inspector, they would have failed. I observed my server stop by a mirror and fix his hair, and I saw him pick his nose while on the floor visible to anyone in the restaurant. I saw my server place a drink in front of a customer grabbing the glass with 3 fingers across the rim. We only ordered appetizers, one bloody mary, and a cup of coffee. The appetizers were delivered long before the bloody mary. When they were delivered, they were incomplete. I had to ask where the drink was. Never going back. read more

**This review is solely based on my visit on Margarita Day(Feb 22)** My friends and I expected the wait time to be seated but we did not expect that we wouldn't receive $1 Margarita as advertised. So we were seated within 30 minutes, so that wasn't bad at all. Immediately the three of us ordered two margaritas each (why not, they were only a dollar). Well the server told us upon placing the order that it would be a little wait because the $1 margaritas that were advertised were only for frozen margaritas and that they did not own an industrial size blender so that they were behind with making them. Ok no worries, we figured it wouldn't be that long (boy were we wrong). So we placed food orders, well about 30-45mins our food came out but still no margaritas. So we asked if we could get margaritas on the rocks for $1 since they were unable to provide the advertised special. One of the supervisors/managers came out and explained to us that they couldn't do that because only the frozen margaritas were one dollar...seriously??? So I think we were upset because this restaurant had no game plan for the abundance of people that arrived for $1 margaritas that they were unable to fulfill. I will NEVER come back here for an event that is advertised on a flyer/FB page because I already know this restaurant is not capable of handling a large mass of people for a special they may not be able to accommodate. We ended up being at this restaurant for over two hours and never once received a $1 margarita as advertised. We thought this place was OK. The brussels sprouts were good. The server was incredibly kind and patient with us, but a tiny bit forgetful. The cauliflower was good, but my wife did not like it that much. The pistachio Barada was mostly flavorless. The ambience was excellent as was the decor. Another funday on the Harley with a group of friends with no where to go. So we go where all the people go, The General Public In San Antonio, you know the city in Texas that's just like Compton. Man Compton must be filled with yuppies and gorgeous scenic hills and curves with a River Walk I may need to visit there. Any who the place was a small restaurant with an easy atmosphere and easy to read menu. I liked the style of the place and the laid back people here. The best things is at 9pm they have $5 burgers and bourbon, so we waited 10 whole extra minutes for beef and whisky. The burgers were good my whole crew liked them and the whisky, well it's whisky what's not to like. I had Knob Creek sweet and brown just like my woman. If you ever in San Antonio or Compton check out this place tell them an elites sent you as in an Elite Member. Until we meet again on As the Yelp Turns. read more

I really hope this place returns when people return to working. We went for lunch and there was only a hostess that was also serving as the server. None of the tables were cleared. The host had to take everyone's order as well as bring everything to the table and check on all the tables. He was very nice but he forgot our order twice. I understand that there is a lack of workers right now. But he could have wrote it down. We had the chicken wings and the fish and chips. Both were very good. What a waste... We came here to enjoy a good meal and watch the Spurs game. Instead we got stuck hearing they the owner Pat was performing so there were a lot of reserved seats....wtf?!? We got seated and then I was disgusted to see that the $17 oyster and shrimp plate was 4 small oysters and 4 shitty little shrimp (literally better at the grocery store). The lettuce wraps that my wife got were TASTELESS. The owners and managment team are phenomenal and handle customer feedback quickly and do everything they can to correct it. I was pretty annoyed initially, but after talking with them, I feel like they were really sincere and do what they can to fix their mistakes. I brought some friends for lunch at this place at La Cantera. It's been here for a bit so I thought it might be good and the reviews were good. We did not have a good experience. The food was mediocre and the service was lacking. I think they were short staffed but it seemed that a worker or two were standing around not helping much. Our server was being used at the restaurant next door at least that is what we were told. Anyway the shrimp and grits were a smaller than expected portion with some very skinny looking shrimp. The flavor was bland. The salads looked like a better option. Not sure I would give this place another try as I was less than impressed with the food. read more

The cheese board is killing me. I once went to GP and had a great cheese board. Complete with a little honey pot and wand. It was truly great. Every. Single. Time since it's gotten worse and worse and includes something that resembles cafeteria food scooped onto your plate like assembly line mashed potatoes. The plus side: happy hour is REALLY good. Super disappointed with the lack of menu items available. They read off an extensive list of what they didn't have, which was over 7 entrees, and multiple appetizers. The already small menu was reduced even more because they didn't have stuff in stock. It would be understandable, to a point, if they were out of rare or unique menu items, but when you're out of chicken and steak, that's a big red flag for me. Disappointed at my first time here. I'm guessing it's the floor manager that came by to get our drinks started (which didn't happen til almost 3-5min after we sat down) while our server finished taking the order for another table. Our server finally came by to take our order, new guy so not too familiar w/ the menu, so okay, get it. But he doesn't seem to have much energy or feedback. I got the fish and chips (fish: delicious; tartar sauce: homemade and delish; fries: soggy and tasteless). My husband got the half chicken & frites (chicken: amazing...that rosemary brine!...you already know how I feel about the fries). Loved everything about this place. They do an evening sunset toast. They pass out shots of a drink that is bartender's choice. The baby kale Caesar salad was yummy. I had the shrimp and grits, which is actually mashed cauliflower. It was delicious. My husband ordered off of the Restaurant Week menu, which included dessert. The house dessert is birthday cake. By the endof the meal after getting all of our food at the same time, we were done. The manager offered dessert but we had to take it to go bc even THAT took another 15/20 minutes. 10 minutes after being sat and we barely got a, "I'll be with you guys in a little." So we decided to ask the host to seat us somewhere else, where a server wasn't so busy. After moving to the new table our server greeted us, after we sat there for 5 min, with a "sup?" The server then took our drink order. 5 more minutes pass and another female server comes to our table asking us for our drink order and stating, "Marcus and I will be your server." I said, "oh, he (Marcus) already took our order." She snapped back with a, "ummmm... Marcus is a girl." *awkward silence* MIND you Marcus has a masculine name, a masculine/deep voice, and so many other masculine characteristics. This was an honest mistake that ruined the rapport with our server right off the bat. I apologized, and she just walked away without saying anything. So then we walked away. I used to come here and get the pork and greens every 2-3 weeks, but the service is turning me away. This place used to be so wonderful, but my friends and I all agree that it's losing its charm. I would have preferred being on a wait, and not getting subpar service. And also, a server should never respond with passive or direct aggression. It makes the customer not want to come back again. Also... when we told the host we were leaving, he just said "oh ok." I feel as though (being that I was a server for 6 years) he should have asked "is there anything we can do to fix this sir?" Came here on a whim for lunch. I had a Rusky (rose wine, lemon, vodka) and husband had a Texas rye and honey; both delicious (we ended up ordering a second round!) For food I had the half chicken with frites - To. Die. For. The only thing I would have changed was having some wilted greens or something to offset the saltiness of the chicken, frites, and bacon aoli. Husband had the steak and blue cheese sandwich, also extremely delicious and stuffed to the gills with caramelized onions. You could actually taste the blue cheese too, which is great! For dessert we had the pot de creme with fresh raspberries. Perfect for two people to share and not too sweet; it was fabulous! First time, at this place.. I've been frequenting The Rim for years and always wanted to try this place. We went for a late lunch and idk if the menu we were given is the only one but I digress. We ordered 2 Bacon Burgers and I asked for mine to be medium. A quick 10 - 15mins later they were brought out and I have to say the presentation of the dish itself was on point. First thing I realized after biting into the burger was that this was going to be a messy ordeal but I did not care since it was delish!! Halfway through I realized my burger was overcooked, it wasnt medium per say but as I mentioned it was delish, the fries were also good and the pickles were exquisite. Adrian was our waiter and kudos to him, he knew the menu very well and was empathetic to the burger not being what I asked for but all in all it was a good visit. Ostracism doesn't usually come to mind when you are out for Sunday lunch. However, this was exactly what I experienced within the short time within the restaurant. Johnny Vasquez was not short in response, but neglected any sense of personal space as he demanded far more than any "Chef" would need to. Asking for names and making it seem as if there was a list instead of just asking for ID is just one example of lack of preparation that come to mind. I mean I show my ID at every establishment but this felt way too personal. It's seem to me that this company not only has a poor pattern of being harsh to their guest, as this is the already the second review done in poor taste, but lacks any sense of direction. I mean why would any company allow for such intrusive behavior. I tried to enjoy a Sunday evening but was met with rude undertones and entitled behavior.
