I have been coming here since the late 80s. Not much has changed. The owner, George is still the guy who waits on me mostly. He is a great guy and the big reason many people are loyal to this place. I come here mainly for breakfast and it's always great and very reasonable. This is one of those rare places where you'll hear old hippies discuss politics next to a tatted up body builder next to a business man next to an older couple in their 80s. The place is small and probably hasn't been renovated in years; they have a mix of booths and tables, the staff is nice, and the food is decent except for the cornbeef hash... First off...... the care and family feel you get at this place is AWESOME. If you're a frequent they know you. They talk to you like family. THEY are a family. EVERYONE is extremely nice. Clean. It's funny. People's relationship with their diner is similar to their relationship with their favorite bar or salon. One person's mecca is another's hell. The Gold Rush Cafe IS a greasy spoon. It's a tiny, neighborhood diner, open for breakfast and lunch. Period. The tiny space is part of it's 'charm'. Many of the people there are there every day - or at least several times a week. You get to know, not only the owner & wait staff, you get to know the other diners - most of whom don't go to the Gold Rush for the food. It's a gathering place. The food isn't bad. I've been there a few times, mostly for breakfast but one visit was a lunch outing. The breakfasts were far more memorable than the lunch, at which I ordered a chicken fried steak sandwich - which wasn't great - frozen & over-fried, dried out, chicken fried steak on a nice, soft, white hamburger bun - with mustard & mayo, lettuce & tomatoes. Served with potato chips - a bit broken up. But it was only $6 or so. The Dr. Pepper was served cold in the can with a glass of ice. Yum. The breakfasts are the usual - with one exception (and my favorite) the John Wayne Special. 2 eggs served over hash browns (the shredded, fried potato patty kind of hash browns) and a flour tortilla, topped with their home-made salsa & cheese (just the right level of spicy for me) with your choice of bacon, sausage or chorizo. I request a corn tortilla rather than flour & have my eggs prepared over-easy and opt for the bacon, crisp. It's not a big huge amount of food so you can eat the whole thing and not need help waddling out the front door. The huevos rancheros are good, but all the beans just made it too heavy for me - the salsa still killer good though. I've not tried the french toast as I'm not a sweet breakfast person, but I hear it's a great selection. Trust me - with all due respect to Roxanne, the Gold Rush IS better than IHop at least if you're interested in a local diner experience and want more than to fill your gut with starch and caffeine. Dean is right - the locals don't necessarily feel compelled to "move on" after finishing the meal. And that's what I like about the Gold Rush. That's part of the experience. read more

For some reason employees let people walk and stand in the doorway until they see a dirty table open for 10 mins. Also enjoy seating yourseld at the dinner table while the waitress wipes the crumbs in your lap. Dont mind the mold on the wall or ceiling. And if you want to pay and leave you have to stand at the cashier for five minutes. Youre lucky if you can pay and leave under 10 mins. If the staff looks like they hate... they probably do. Line out the door for Sunday morning breakfast. Coupled with the great reviews, I expected some pretty good food. We waited quite a while for service. Our waitress didn't know anything about the menu- she was unable to answer really any question. "Are the beans vegetarian?". Blank stare and idk. "What's in the Greek omelette?". "I don't know". Perhaps you could go ask? After asking another waitress who didn't know either, the answer returned from the kitchen: feta cheese and nothing else. So I settled on a Belgian waffle which didn't have much taste and the texture indicated it had perhaps been sitting around for quite a while. It was strangely dense. My boyfriend got the 'John Wayne' which lacked in flavor and was wholly unimpressive. BF had to get his own coffee refill. Upon finishing our meal, we waited for a bill with customers lined up out the door. We asked the waitress for the check, and were told to pay up front. The cashier didn't have our check either, and asked us to recite what we had. Unimpressed. read more

It's an old-school greasy spoon, and it is really good. Had the enchilada and egg breakfast yesterday. I honestly don't know if I've had more satisfying enchiladas before. Comes with a meat sauce and 2 eggs to order. I got sunnies and mixed them with enchilada bites. Comes with 2 flour tortillas and refried beans. Also ordered grits and added extra butter. It was so good! Obviously a neighborhood regular spot for a bunch of people...lots of mingling and knowing each other by name. The guy at the counter was also doubling up taking orders and serving everyone. Very friendly man and very attentive and solid at his job(s). read more

I know it's probably not fair to compare Gold Rush Cafe's migas to the Taco Joint's migas, but that's exactly what I'm about to do. We tried the Gold Rush early on a Saturday morning, when nothing else in the area was open (ie Taco Joint). The service was attentive and friendly, but the migas were just plain horrible. I picked around the chewy tortillas to find edible bits of egg and bacon, both of which were just so-so. I finally gave up after eating less than half my plate and decided I'd rather put up with a still grumbling belly. I can't say I'll never be back to Gold Rush, but there are so many other choices of outstanding breakfast joints. And if I do return, I certainly won't order the migas. read more

SO THAT'S WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO MY CORNED BEEF!!! That explains sooo much. Now what is the "corned" part all about? Either way I'm a big fan of corned beef hash. And I don't care if it's out of can, even though it looks gross right when you let the can shaped giant conglomerate of corned beef slide out and it retains it's cylindrical appearance. I still love it. And the Gold Rush Cafe has it. Most places don't bother. The eggs were fine. We did run out of tea a few times. The place wasn't packed but those who were there early on Friday morning seemed to be regulars. I'll give it another whirl. I never pass total judgment until I've had the pancakes. My mom and dad live just down the street from Gold Rush. We always eat there every Sunday before driving back home to Austin on Sundays. I always order the two eggs (scrambled) and get biscuits instead of toast with hash browns and sausage... with a side of gravy. Yeah, you know where I'm going with this. Voila. I have 2 biscuits with 2 sausages with eggs to put on. A little bit of gravy on top. Yeah, talk about hangover cure. I'm not going to confuse my fellow yelpers and make you think this place is fancy... yeah, we're talking greasy spoon, $3.95 for what you read above. If you like coffee and are snobby about it, this isn't the place for you. But we've had consistent, GOOD, greasy breakfasts here for months now, so it's worth the tetanus shot :). read more
