My friend and I were in the area for an event, and we decided to try this place after realizing another place we wanted to try wasn't open yet. I'm glad we got to try this place though! This place is completely vegan, which I am happy to be seeing more and more of. There are a number of options for people who also are gluten, soy, or nut free. They also bring tap water to the table right away but you are more than welcome to order other types of drinks (mostly coffees and teas). I ordered The Grain (pancake breakfast with eggs, hashbrowns, and either bacon or sausage). My friend got the Ruben with a side salad (but you could also get a potato side). I was a fan of the sides of my breakfast platter! I was not as big of a fan of the pancakes, but they weren't bad, just not something I'm a fan of (I believe they were more of a wheat pancake compared to a "buttermilk" pancake). My friend very much enjoyed her sandwich and salad though. At the end of the meal, our server offered us a free slice of cake to go (unsure why, but hey, free cake!). She was a doll (I believe her name was Cayla?). The place is a little small, but it wasn't bad. It can be quite crowded though and you might have to wait, especially if you have a group bigger than two. This is a sit-down place where you pay after receiving your food, but it's possible you can order to go. The table right by the door though can be drafty when it's cold, but when the door is closed, the place warms up right away again. Pricing is also fair. Maybe not Denny's cheap, but my platter was $12.95 while my friend's was $11.95, for a total of about $27 after tax but before tip. Overall, if you are in the Long Beach area and want to try something new beyond Veggie Grill that isn't just a smoothie place, go to this one! read more

Overall we had a very good experience at The Grain Cafe. The food was fresh and flavorful and the service was friendly and prompt. We started with an order of falafel and unfortunately it wasn't very good. It appears to have been baked and not fried and that makes a big difference. The flavor was OK, however, it was very dry, even with the dipping sauce. We got the curry chicken salad and the hotdog sandwich. The curry chicken salad was very good. The hotdog is actually a sausage sandwich and it was excellent. For dessert we got the coconut cake and the almond strawberry cake which were both sublime. We will be back. read more

First time eating here and I have to say that it won't be my last. The Reuben sandwich was so unbelievably delicious that I can't wait to try the rest of their menu items and desserts. The staff was also very welcoming and helpful when it came to answering my many questions--and I tend to ask a lot. I'm so glad I asked what they recommended me to have for lunch. I'll be back for that mole burrito and those scrumptious looking enchiladas for sure! I had a friend who is a vegan tell me she wasn't impressed with this place but I thought I'm still going to try it and suffice it to say I am not impressed either and will not be returning for the following reasons: 1-Food tasteless, dry and rubbery (chicken tacos). Sauces are pretty good. 2- Service abrasive and unhelpful (Almost like it was a bother for us to be there and she was a little arrogant). There was hardly anybody there as it was a Tuesday night around 5 PM. I don't know if she was new, uninformed, or just really really inept but it was one of those "is this for real" moments. 3- Prices are ridiculous for subpar food Obviously with those three things said I won't be returning. I can imagine though than a lot of people who are vegan or vegetarians have limited options and so they are happy just to have a place all their own. While the over all review rating for this restaurant is very high, when I scrolled through the prior reviews (have to dig a little deep for that) I noticed that there's a lot of very very low ratings for the same reasons. The "whipped cream" was sweet and tasted just like real whipped cream! The chocolate syrup was delicious as well. The chocolate crepe was nice, and it was filled with strawberries and what was supposed to be chocolate mousse, but the heat of the crepe turned it into a melted mess. I have visited this location a handful of times and everything I've had was so good but the best thing I think they have is the breakfast burrito. I think this breakfast burrito might be better than a Nicks burrito in seal beach. And the hot sauce that they have is incredible as well.
