The works with Turkey and Cheese.
    Crystal N.

I've been on the hunt for a good old-fashioned delicatessen--the kind where you can watch them slice the meats and cheeses, everything fresh, hearty, and made to actually fill you up. My husband found The Great Outdoors Sub Shop, and it absolutely hit the spot. I ordered the turkey and cheese with the works (minus tomatoes), and my husband went with the same sandwich but built his own without the preset toppings. The bread is baked fresh in-house, and all of the fixings tasted fresh and high quality. I grabbed a bag of chips and a drink, and it made for a solid, satisfying meal. If I'm being picky, I wouldn't have minded a little more meat--but overall, the flavor was on point. The place was clean, with steady foot traffic from nearby businesses, which is always a good sign. The servers were ready to take on all the orders that came in. Bonus points: they also offer desserts and ice cream! Definitely a great option if you're craving a classic deli experience

The service was timely and professional. However, barely anything on a sandwich for the price is not cool. Very little meat/cheese and when ordering for a group, I guess you have to specify pickles? All other generic toppings came with. Large-ish shop, plenty of seating, order at counter and either sit or takeaway.

This place was amazing! The food was so fresh. Freshly baked bread, freshly sliced meats. Service was very friendly. The restaurant was very clean.

Impressed with the sandwiches here, the flavor was good with the vinager and oil on it. I got the outdoorsman, it wasn't as big as pictures make it out to be, but it was good. Very simple sub on wheat, with the meats, shredded lettuce, onions, and tomato's. No cheese, that was evidently extra, as was guacamole and some other selections. The staff was super nice. The gentleman making my sub was very patient, this was a first visit. Interior was warm and welcoming, cleanish. Not a lot of sitting areas. Very good, I'll be back to try other fare at this spot.

Great Outdoors makes exceptional sandwiches. Our family's favorites are the turkey cheese and the roast beef. Getting your proteins on a salad is a great option -- see the photos with this review for a pic of #8 turkey cheese as a chef's salad. The cookies are perhaps the unsung heroes of the menu. The softness and chewiness is hard to describe . . . they are immensely satisfying. The peanut butter cookies, as well as chocolate chip, are outstanding. The interior is dated but functional, and the service is efficient. One of the best features of this store is the location in the cultural arts district. Take your family to the museums and enjoy a healthy, affordable meal nearby.

STILL living this place!! Always get #21 The Invention. Always consistently fresh and tasty. Their sodas are always well balanced and I love the pebble ice! Makes it taste even better!

This particular spot is a deli sandwich place; they do have some standout choices, but I was craving tuna, so I ordered their Pacific Blue (Tuna Melt). Loved that they toasted the buns; it was good but didn't wow me. They skimped on the cheese and didn't add the jalapeños I requested. Service was incredibly slow, but there was a huge rush-hour crowd, so I'll overlook it. All in all, the theme is cool. Loved that they had vendors and music available the day we went; it gave us an opportunity to have something to do while we waited. I did spot board games, but naturally didn't think we'd need them. The goo ball was overly buttery and definitely had peanut butter. It was good for the first couple of bites but I quickly tossed it afterward once it became too much. If a deli is your thing, give it a try. I'm sure on any other given day they'd be better at delivering a sandwich with everything.

Normally, I don't consider people from St. Louis to be credible deli evaluators, but I was desperate and made the hour drive to Grapevine. We got there at 11:15 and the line was nearly to the door. Within 30 minutes, it was well out into the street. That was a promising sign. The sandwich menu covered the entire wall over the counter. Lots of non-New-York sandwiches like Cubans, gyros, etc, but over in the left corner were the classic Ruebens and pastramis. I went for the latter. A REAL NY deli usually has a few soups like split pea and chicken noodle and matzoh. No soups. Bummer. They had a half dozen sides - 3 kinds of potato salads and a few slaws. I went with the German potato salad. The drink option was spartan - they tossed a styrofoam cup at me and pointed to the soda fountain. The pastrami sandwich was OK for Texas. A SUPER pastrami sandwich on hard rye can get me moaning like Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally" -- only I don't have to fake it. The German potato salad was watery and bland - I should have gone with the mustard potato salad. Turnaround was on the slow side. Napkins = paper towel roll on table. Flimsy plasticware. The overall vibe was affordable utilitarian. I'll give the sandwich a 4, everything else a 3. Next time I'll drive the extra half hour to Cindi's.

When we got home, we realized they had swapped the breads on our sandwiches and put pepper jack on both. After switching the bread myself, I had to add my own tomato and onion because apparently no toppings are included or if they are they forgot to put them in the bag. The pumpernickel was also incredibly thin and the crust was thicker than the actual slice of bread. The chicken was stringy, had a strange texture, and honestly tasted like something you'd get in a hospital cafeteria. We also ordered the potato salad, which had one of the oddest flavors we've ever tasted, and the cucumber salad was anything but fresh. 2 bites of each and threw in the trash. The cucumber slices were wilted, soft, and tasted like they had been sitting for days. The only thing we actually enjoyed was the lemon bar. I honestly could have saved my money and made a much better sandwich at home. I don't understand the hype, and unfortunately, we won't be back.
