Came in over the weekend and had a Reuben with sweet potato fries and the patty melt with house fries. Patty melt came out medium well after it was ordered well done and sent it back. Fries were so so for both plates. Sandwiches were ok but nothing amazing. I hate to say it, but the spinach salad at Piatti's would have been better. read more

Breakfast was great! My local friends (who are definite foodies) brought me here to their usual spot, and I'm so glad they did! Tasty food and good service, what's not to love!? They had a lovely selection of teas, and my pancakes were super-fluffy! The bacon was also good, and the french toast looked tasty. I used to love the Growler! But, I ordered it today (haven't had it since the pandemic started) and it was awful. The Poutots were ok, but not much flavor in the gravy or the tots. The hash wasn't a hash, just chopped pieces of pastrami. The jagerschnitzel was just awful. The pickled cabbage was dry, and had no flavor other than vinegar. The mashed potatoes were definitely instant potatoes, and the jagerschnitzel itself was tough and dry. The only part with flavor was the gravy, and that wasn't even that great. The Growler: it's one of those places off of San Ramon Valley Blvd that you've passed a million times and never thought to try. They're not hot, they're not cold. They're just there. A few of us Jiu Jitsu moms (think soccer moms) have come in for happy hour or early dinner between classes and have gotten to try stuff off their happy hour menu and the regular. It's designed to give that older town tavern feel - but you're really greeted with various games on the different mounted flats. Firstly though, they're primarily a pub serving pints and samplers of various ales, stouts, and lagers. However, we obviously don't go to town on those with a mess of little kids in tow. We've come mostly for the food. The PouTots SOUNDED interesting - their take on poutine tater tots (tater tots, deep fried cheese curds, pastrami hash, caramelized onions, beef demi glaze gravy); alas, it was underwhelming...with the pastrami hash tasting old, the beef demi glaze gravy under-seasoned. The fries, house salad, and kids stuff was pretty standard. Our tables' LEAST fave was the Spent Grain Pretzel Bites. They were SUPER dense pretzel-esque dough balls that weren't worth eating after trying one and the ultra bland beer queso and side of beer mustard they're served with didn't help it go down. Our kids could've played dodgeball with these, but we decided against it to prevent any David/Goliath situations. Checked out The Growler and I'm a fan. While this new pub has some "areas of growth," I think the concept, the food and the atmosphere is a needed addition to Danville. It was hopping on Friday night when our party of 5 arrived. We were lucky enough to snag a table, so no waiting, and we quickly ordered up beers from their pretty big selection. There are flights to choose from, you can go with a pint or they have craft beers in the bottle available. We all ordered an entrée off their slim menu and then shared a couple kinds of fries. Food was decent and I liked the chipotle chicken sandwich. Not sure if I would get that again as it really didn't "wow" me...wish I ate red meat b/c the avocado bacon cheeseburger looked awesome! We had a little snafu with one of our orders not getting put in, and the management dealt with it beautifully, quickly firing off the sandwich and removing from the bill. My favorite part of this place is that they have a bunch of games you can grab to play at your table. I nearly fell on the floor laughing at this card game "Cards against humanity" (which on a weird aside, some lady at the table next to us was letting her 10ish year old kid play with), but the real point is that games in bar/pub make for a good time. read more

"Push door then lock"! The bathroom requires the aforementioned trick to ensure no one sees you in your knickers. It was too late for me but it is not too late for anyone who reads this. Aside from that little blip my visit to The Growler was great. Though, any establishment that has a FC Barcelona flag instantly gets points from me! Brews of all varieties are represented on the menu which is a huge plus. They even have a dessert stout! It was a little hard to eat/drink but once the marshmallow topping mixed with the chocolate and coffee notes in the stout it was perfect. I skipped dinner that night which turned out to be a mistake. The hubs let me try his Tri-Tip sandwich which was very good. Nothing special but I am always impressed when something simple is delicious. Like the beer menu, all varieties of folks come to this spot. Families, early birds, ladies out for a night on the town, Danville equivs to Wall Street types, and jeans and a t-shirt peeps like myself and the hubs. It's earned a spot on my list of places to I will make an effort to go to. read more

Just a minor update. But I stopped by last month to check out their tap/bottle selection. Definitely improved since the first day! More interesting beers were on tap and they included breweries that are more in demand. I noticed The Growler made a facebook post a while back asking customers what beers should be tapped. Looks like they listened... Bottle fridge was looking respectable. It's no longer half-empty! haha I was surprised to learn they carried mead (honey wine) so I was browsing their selection. Someone (I think she was the owner) asked if I needed any help and proceeded to check the back for any more bottles of mead. She offered to order bottles if I was looking for anything specific, too. Wow! I declined since I was only going to be in the bay area for a few more days. But that impressed me a bit. I'll try to stop by next time I'm back home. read more

Nothing excites me more than SF Beer Week (ok, maybe a new nacho spot) and on this particular night there was an added bonus... Barrel Aged Beer night! So my boyfriend and I headed to Danville for a local'ish date night of barrel aged brews with high hopes and childlike enthusiasm. Let's start with the good then get to the bad... since that's how our emotions flowed (from positive to bummed) during our visit. Brewski: Great menu selection of beers. We really enjoyed the barrel aged options... and the week of events for Beer Week seemed pretty cool. They also had Sam Adams Utopia which I dont see often. That's it for the positive. First impressions... This building must have been a Taco Bell or some Mexican style restaurant that was bought by a beer enthusiast who opted not to spend money on construction. An actual conversation we had was on the confusion we felt about the theme... the feel... the ambiance. What are the owners trying to accomplish? A weird mix of sports signs (soccer / football clubs), canvas and flags, but not quite the look and feel of a sports bar, flowers on some of the tables, quotes. The menu was on a flat screen TV which was a little modern-esque for the rest of the place. Then our conversation came to an abrupt halt as we both noticed the music. The music was depressing; slow, saxophoney, weird elevator or phone waiting music. Definitely NOT what you'd expect at a brew spot and especially during barrel aged beer night. Well we felt a little better after seeing the menu. Short lived once we started eating. 1) Tarot tots and cheese curds with gravy and pastrami: The tots are smothered in gravy. Maybe some will like this... me, not so much. The gravy gets colds very quickly and sogs up the tots. 2) Tri tip sandwich: The meat was flavorful but unfortunately they skimped out on the meat. Great place for lunch or dinner. I have not tried it for breakfast yet. As I am not usually a fan of pub style food they have some healthy alternatives such as impossible burger and great salads. Waited a while for tis place to open. The selection of IPA's are good, even for a beer snob such as myself! My friend and I shared the bacon deviled eggs to start - Anything with bacon is a good idea! Super yummy, slightly bacon-y We also split an order of the fries, an avocado bacon cheeseburger and beer sausage. Pros: Delicious Food Great selection of Beer Attentive, knowledgeable and friendly staff (extra kudos to Christopher and Crystal) Con's: All hard surfaces in a BIG room so there is nothing to absorb all the noise! We had heard that The Growler was going to open up in Danville in the early spring so we waited, and waited. We finally made it to The Growler last weekend. Since the place was very new, we were expecting a few bumps and issues that most places have when they open up. We showed up about 8pm on Saturday and the place was doing a good business. Entering the door we didn't know if we should seat ourselves or wait for a hostess to seat us. We decided to just grab an open table. Not too long after we sat down our waitress stopped by to take our drink orders. As you can expect, the beer list was pretty good with some really good choices. Wifey and I put our order in and it took a little while to get our drinks which were quite good. The part about going to a new restaraunt that I dread is the food. This is where I had my biggest surprise. The menu at the growler is somewhat limited, but that's ok. There is something for everyone. I ordered the avacado bacon cheeseburger and wifey ordered a burger as well and a basket of fries to split. Wow! The food came out promptly and was cooked EXACTLY right! Whoever is in charge of the kitchen, my hat is off to you. Very well done. I know burgers aren't the hardest thing to cook, but when you get it done perfectly and quickly especially when you are a new place, you get kudos. One word on what to expect, this place can get very noisy. So be prepared when you go. Will I be back? Heck yeah. This is a great place. read more

Should read 3 and a half stars. Not a bad spot for food and beer. Small menu, we had the belgian fries, beet and kale salad, and the chicken sandwich. All were pretty tasty and I was happy to report that the blue cheese bacon walnut aoli didn't taste like blue cheese at all. Nice beer selection of 20 or so draft beers and a fridge full of craft bottles. We ordered two flights (which on our original menu said $6 each, the menu inside said $8 each and we were charged $9 each so be careful and check your bill at the end of the night). Out of the eight different beers we ordered they were out of three of them so we had to get subs. Hopefully when they get going for a while longer they'll get their keg-refilling down as well as their menus and pricing. There were also a lot of people with babies here. I came to the growler after 9PM to try some of their amaaazing wings (as my coworker says they are). However they close the kitchen at 9, so we left looking for food. As we grabbed something nearby, I called the bar back to see if we can bring the food inside because the bartenders were extremely inviting when I first walked in. One of them had said, "The kitchen is closed, but our beer is flowing!" Haha! So we went back with our food. They gave us plates, let us change our mind to sit anywhere and everywhere, and we ended up right at the bar. This place has a very nice interior and the bartenders have great customer service. The beer selection was displayed on TV's, instead of writing it with chalk, so it added to the nicely designed interior. They had a beer selection from all over the bay area. They have flights available as well. Since this is far from where I live, and there are bars everywhere, I wouldn't necessarily go back for the beer. I would however go back for their A+ customer service. read more

I love the vibe here. I have come here a few times during sporting events and the crowd really gets into it! This creates such a fun atmosphere. They have a beer for everyone and their waiters are very informed on what's on tap and helping select and suggesting a beer for someone's liking. I also love that they give a sample if you'd like before committing to a beer. Tonight I had the Coronado Idiot IPA with Mango, and it was refreshing and flavorful. A balanced IPA that wasn't overly bitter but definitely not lacking in the hops. We also got the Totchos, they were pretty good but thought they were missing something. They had some classic tater tots and others filled with cheese which I liked better. Overall I enjoyed my experience here for the great service and atmosphere. read more

Quaint gastropub with lots of wooden decor giving it a rustic and cozy feel. There's seating both indoors as well as outdoors although during peak times I could see where it could get a little crowded. They have a good variety of solid craft beers from which to choose. I tried their Impossible Burger which was decent although the crowing jewel of my meal was the pesto fries. I'd go back for that alone. read more

I have to recommend starting out with a beer. This is really the strength of this establishment and will make the experience all the better most likely. I've gone here since shortly after they opened, they were a favorite...and they were definitely affected by the whole pandemic thing. It was the first place we went to after the first re-opening. I ordered the fish and chips and was hurling six hours later. I emailed them just as an fyi. No response. One of my favorite dishes was the mac and cheese so the next time (trying to have some faith and supporting a local small business) I got that instead and there was NO cheese in the dish - it was like a bland white sauce. I reached out and they apologized for the "inconvenience" - I expressed disappointment because some people see going out as a treat. Instead of expressing the pride they have in their menu, they apologized for my inconvenience, eventually they offered a $10 credit - I didn't take them up on it. Tonight we went so I ordered a quesadilla and my spouse got the cuban pork sandwich, which historically was very tasty. No complaints on the modest quesadilla. The pork sandwich, ordered sans mayo came dry (no mustard which is usually on it) and the ham and pork combo seemed to be of two varying qualities - one seemingly not so great. My spouse doesn't send items back to the kitchen EVER having worked in food when he was younger. It was pretty sad to hear him say, "let's just go to black bear next time." Oh, and the staff mostly wear their masks under their noses, which I know people in Danville are pretty anti-mask, so I get it. There are some Really Great wait staff there though! A bit disappointing but you need to know our history. We have been Ruggy's customers for years and was disappointed that the mall didn't renew their lease on terms acceptable to the owner. A sign on the window asked us to visit here. The brunch menu was anemic in comparison to the Ruggy's menu. We had pork tots and a basic egg dish. Atmosphere is okay for a pub but not my cup of tea. The floor is polished concrete. One of the walls had several wine kegs for atmosphere. We sat next to a former Ruggy's customer and they weren't overly impressed how the staff handled an entreé challenge. We have never been there during happy hour but suspect happy hour is the correct time to visit Growlers. read more

First time here and DEFINITELY not the last. Omigawd I fell in with the tater tots *featured in exhibit A* they were like little magical balls of heaven. The pretzels were a must try- and a get-again for sure! And they are very liberal with their beer cheese! Just ask for more if needed! The service was incredibly fast and the guys knew their beers! With Covid going on we haven't gotten out much but noticed the extra patio seating when we drove by one day so decided to come in & enjoy the growlers delicious fare. We were very happy with our decision! My husband had the sausage platter & I had the growler dog. Both were scrumptious!! If you like craft beer and hearty, meaty foods served in a relaxed atmosphere, this is your place. They have at least 20 taps with local and specialty beers of all types, and sandwiches, sausages, potatoes, and wings. In the three years I have been coming here, the crowd seems fairly regular, and the wait staff and bartenders are consistent, friendly, and always remember me. There is also a small attached room that we have used occasionally for group meetings and get-togethers. It is not quiet, but is a bit more private than the main restaurant. read more

The beer at the Growler is really good and they have a great selection of rotating beer. There is lots of seating inside and sometimes host events like the 4th of July. We came here during the parade and paid $10 for a saved seat. This included a wristband that gave you beer socials and allowed you to have a bleacher seat and use of the restrooms. This was such a great value for an event like this and we expressed our gratitude in many beers and food! read more

I've been here for lunch in the past and it has really good lunch deals! I went here recently for breakfast and it was amazing! I got the green Benedict (I think that's what it's called. It was vegetarian eggs Benedict with avocado and spinach). It's not on the online menu but it's on the restaurant's menu. The tots were alright- I didn't like them (very bland and plain) but my family liked them. The mimosas were very sweet so just an FYI. I definitely recommend this place though! Even though the food was a little under seasoned for my taste, I still give this spot 5 stars because of the cool vibe and AWESOME staff. It's so cool that Wednesday is all day happy hour for us working folks who need that sort of thing after a hard day. We got the poutots and the peanut butter burger (which sounds unorthodox, but was surprisingly good), the former of which REALLY needed a hit of salt despite the generous helping of gravy. However I have to say I really just enjoyed being here. Every single staff member is friendly and makes the environment and experience what it should be whenever you sit down for some beers. I am going them two stars for two reasons... A) the service sucked. Our waitress did not have a clue, everything we ordered she had to go ask if they had the item. B) They where out of or did not carry almost half of the beverages (beer and wine) we order. No red wine in stock at all... beer, well unless you only drink craft beers then your in luck. No domestic beer at all, not even a PBR. The food (wings, pretzel bites, house made sausage) we ordered was good. Caution the pretzel bites are huge! The wings are smoked and ready Good. Unpretentious and easy to miss. But isn't that where we usually find great food? Yes! Sat out side on the basic patio next to the busy street so the dogs could be part of lunch ... I mean enjoy lunch not be part of it !! Anyway, Excellently executed food from the crispy succulent fish and chips, through a schnitzel as good as I've eaten in Germany, this was "good food". The fries were expertly done, I should know, my parents had a fish and chip shop in England. Oh!! And they have a poutine made with exceptionally good tater tots ... not the tater tots you get at Safeway .... real, mash in the middle tater tots with fried cheese curd and yummy beef gravy. Since I don't drink, I would have never come here on my own. However since I was meeting a coworker for lunch he suggested that we come here for a bite and some conversation. It was a great decision. I got the Growler Burger with bacon and cheddar. It was a great burger. Like the Carl's Jr. commercial states, "if it doesn't get all over the place, it doesn't belong in your face." That is true but I did end up resorting to a knife and fork. Hey don't judge me, I was wearing a white dress shirt and tie. My only want, is that they had Mexican Coke in a bottle for the non-alcohol drinkers. There is something more satisfying about holding a glass, oh and it tastes 1000x better. What did I learn today? Wow. Went in for breakfast after church with 6 of us, and got directed to the patio. Hostess told us to move our own tables to make a 6 top while she held menus. 1 other guy outside, 3 tables full inside, 4 staff at the desk chatting about something besides Customer Service, me thinks... Sat for 20 minutes with NO ONE wanting to come outside and at least take drink orders or bring water. I went inside, and was asked if I needed a table...ugh. Finally took drinks, then waited for food order to be taken; another 15 minutes. Then 30 more minutes pass, no food, no life. We were seated by a window, so kept peeking inside to see how the rush of business was inside....except by now it was 2 tables inside and us. 4 plates were brought out, waited another 10 minutes and went inside about the other 2....which we saw sitting in the window. Food was *meh*, bland, ugly veggies, cold fries. But the kicker was we had to go inside and get our bill. My wife walked the card and bill back inside, and, wait for it, the woman said, "wait, you can take this back out with you!" SERIOUSLY??!! Fix your service and we may be back. Danville just lost a premier breakfast spot (Country Waffle) that you could be winning over. Not if your service and food are like this. read more
