Absolutely delightful! I'm surprised I didn't find this hidden gem before. I've been to other Nepali restaurants nearby and The Gurkha Kitchen puts their food to shame, no joke. Their momos were the juiciest ones I've had in a long time and they served "aalu tama"and "ghiu" with their thali which makes it way more authentic than any other Nepali restaurant I've been to here in the Bay area. Everything tasted authentic and the smell of this restaurant took me back home, that friendly, inviting aroma of a kitchen in a Nepali household. I didn't take any photos of any food because I had 0 expectations going in but I was so pleasantly surprised. I was also asked if I'd like more rice which is the warm hospitality you can only expect in Nepal. I've never been asked that here anywhere else. I can't wait to go back and try everything on the menu! read more

There are so many Nepalese restaurants opening up over the years and it'd such a nice balance between flavors. Usually Indian good is heavy on the cream and spices but Nepal really takes the cake with their light sauced items. I would totally recommend their platters that give you an array of sauces/curries, definitely a fun adventure eating it. We had about 15 people so we took up the whole restaurant due to the current situation. The workers are so friendly and actually speak Nepalese! It's hard to pick a bad dish but always get the momo and non-vegetarian curries! Have fun! read more

Came here for a delicious early dinner and really enjoyed everything we got. The goat curry is particularly delicious but also really enjoyed the channa bhatura, momos, and the vegetable chow mein. Really delicious food, but they didn't come by to refill water or anything, so service is relatively minimal. read more

In a crowded Momo food truck scene in South Bay, Gurkha kitchen offers a decent dine in experience to taste Nepalese food. Mom's and Chowmein ( aka Noodles) is decently flavored. I usually try their Goat Thali. While the food is flavorful it's not for everyone's taste buds. I recommend dining in for the experience. read more

I came here on a Monday because so many Asian food restaurants are closed on this day and it looked interesting. I enjoyed my thali plate and it was nice having a variety of food. Went in on a Monday for lunch. Got the Dal Makhani, Samosa Chaat, and Lamb Biryani. The Samosa Chaat and Lamb Biryani were the best I'd ever had - I'd recommend them to anyone (lamb was cooked perfectly!). The Dal was also good, but it was my first time having that type of Dal and I wasn't as big a fan of the overall flavor profile. Service was quick but staff was slow to recommend dishes beyond tikka masala which I get, it's the safe option for people who look like they may be less familiar with the cuisine. When we went it was pretty quiet - just us at first and then two other parties over the course of the hour. That being said the flow of delivery drivers was constant - this place clearly does healthy business. read more

This review is for take-out food, so I can't speak as to what the venue is like. I was craving saag paneer, and I ordered naan and samosa chaat on the side. The food arrived in good time on my front porch, still piping hot. Saag paneer: a little salty, but satisfied my craving. I liked it even better after I put half away in the fridge and ate it later as a snack--it's almost like dip when it's been chilled, and I've always thought curries are better a day after they are made anyway, to allow the flavors to settle. Plain Naan: perfect! Soft, baked well, zero complaints here. Samosa chaat: very tasty! While it doesn't make the list for top ten samosa chaats, it was still flavorful and enjoyable. Not sure if the sprinkled cheese on top was a good idea--or was it cheese?--and the proportions in the toppings had less of the spicy sauces than I had hoped, but it was pretty decent. Overall, I enjoyed the experience. I wouldn't enthusiastically promote it as the best paneer of all time, but I also wouldn't protest another taste, either. It was a bit pricey, but I guess everything is in the bay area right now, especially when fulfilled through doordash. The cost was around $40. read more

Can attest to other reviews, food here is simple, authentic and delicious. My favorites are jhol momo, thakali thali goat and goat curry w/ plain rice. We frequent The Gurkha Kitchen every time we are in the Sunnyvale/MountainView area. Service is great and ambiance is cozy and private. Restaurants adopting authentic and traditional Indo-Nepali ingredients, cooking techniques and recipes are few and far between in the Bay Area. They are one of them. Recommended 100%. read more

We've seen this place before, but finally remembered to give it a try, and we were very pleased. The Chicken Momo was delicious and a definite order again item! We also ordered the Gobi Manchurian, which was also a delightful appetizer, perfectly crispy and lightly sautéed with onions, peppers and spices. The Paneer Tikka Masala was very good, although it could have used a few extra pieces of paneer. The Butter Chicken was flavorful, not as creamy as I'm used to, but that might just be personal preference. Overall we enjoyed this hidden secret, and we would definitely come back! read more

Food 10/10 Service 9/10 Ambience 10/10 Quality 9/10 This is my favorite place to go to for some jhol molo. They have fast service and they get the food out within 10 minutes. The momos always taste fresh and consistent. Being Nepali, I can attest to the authenticity of this place and the food that they offer. Every time I go here, it reminds me of the restaurants I went to as a kid back in Nepal. Their jhol momo is definitely the best in the Bay Area having tried all the different momo's here. The staff is very friendly and they recognize me and have even memorized my order. read more

The dosa is crisp and the fermented flavor is delicate. The filtered coffee is popular so I had to try it, and I love it. I'm not sure everyone would like it though. It's a strong coffee, slightly bitter even with sugar. The milk is poured with a long pull to create foam. The foam is light, not creamy or velvety like a latte. It's a very small portion in a small cup, and it's HOT, very HOT. I like it but I can see how other people might not. I was confused the first time I went in to eat because seating and ordering is not typical. When you first walk in, you go to the host and they'll give you a number then you walk to the room to your left to order and pay. You're given a chip if you order a coffee or tea and move over to the right. You give your chip to the person preparing the drinks for you. They ask your preference and hand over the very HOT drink. Then you sit at the table with your number on it. Your food is brought over fairly quickly. They bring extra sambar and chutney if needed, no extra charge. The dosa comes filled with turmeric spiced potato and on the side chutney (not my fave) and sambar which is so so good. You break a little dosa and dip and or scoop some of the sambar/ chutney. These are all medium trays - there was a lot of food leftover (tip to order less than no of guests)- but we were able to give it to our guests and neighbors. And the food- we got so many compliments from our guests! The drinks were mango lassi and mint and lime mojito and the appetizers samosas and paneer tikka were great! Also the three entrees, dal and rice and gulab jamun were great. We also got complimentary milk sweet at the end. Harry also helped us with setting a small garbage to throw our disposable plates and silverware, which was really helpful. Thank you Chaat Bhavan for a memorable and delicious dinner!

For five people we ordered - brisket - tender, well marbled and a perfect meat to start the meal with - beef tongue - another great cut, thinly slice, tasty - pork jowl - thicker cut, but cooked to perfection as it was very easy to bite through - marinated prime bone in short rib - the one item I had an issue with. Apparently the most popular item, and also the most expensive thing we ordered, at $85 for the serving size. This meat was waaay to sweet. Like take bulgogi sweet and then drizzle honey on it. It was cooked well and the meat we beautiful but the marinade was just to much and none of the banchan balanced out the sweetness - spicy cold noodles - a favorite of the table. Super thing noodles, not too spicy, very refreshing for a hot day - seafood pancake - thick, generously loaded seafood pancake There was a large variety of banchan and all of it was good. They will also refill it if you finish any specific ones. I liked their radish wraps a lot, and also the cauliflower.

We stopped by late on a Sunday evening, and this spot seems like a great find for late-night eats. The vibe is relaxed, with a cozy quadrangle layout -- chairs, sofas, and tables arranged around a central space -- and engaging music that adds to the atmosphere. The cuisine is advertised as Nepalese/Himalayan, though much of it leans toward North Indian with a unique spin. The spice levels and flavor profiles are distinct -- not your typical Indian fare, and that's what makes it stand out. We ordered the Veg C-Momo and the Veg Thali. The thali was beautifully served in what looked like traditional brass or copper dishes, which added a nice touch to the presentation. It included: Jackfruit curry- a standout dish and the highlight of the meal. Flavorful and unlike anything I've had recently. Rice, sabji, and dal makhani - The dal makhani deserves a special mention. It's not your usual Delhi-style version -- creamier, richer, and incredibly satisfying. I liked it so much I asked for a second helping! The C-Momos were a surprise hit -- large, flavorful, and generously stuffed. Honestly, one plate could easily satisfy two hungry people. I also tried the chai. It was simple and basic -- nothing particularly special, but a nice, warm addition to the meal. The decor is full of photos and has a lived-in, welcoming feel. From what I could tell, they also serve alcohol, though we didn't try any. One thing to note: the menu doesn't clearly indicate which dishes are vegetarian, non-vegetarian, or contain eggs. I recently ordered what was advertised on the menu as "Choila" from the Gurkha Kitchen, eagerly anticipating the spicy, flavorful dish that I've enjoyed in the past. However, what arrived on my plate was not Choila but rather a generic chicken curry. As someone who loves trying different cuisines and is particularly fond of Nepali Newari flavors, this was a major letdown. Choila is a dish I was looking forward to savoring, with its unique blend of spices and grilled meat. Instead, I received a bland, run-of-the-mill chicken curry that lacked the depth of flavor and complexity I was expecting. The discrepancy between what was promised and what was delivered is disappointing, to say the least. It's not just about receiving the wrong dish; it's about the false expectations created by the menu description. If the restaurant is unable to provide the dishes they advertise accurately, they should either update their menu or ensure that orders are prepared correctly. Furthermore, the chicken curry itself was unremarkable. It lacked the boldness and authenticity that I associate with Nepali cuisine. My sincere gratitude for the wonderful dining experience that my friends and I had at your restaurant. The food was delicious and the hospitality we received especially from Narayan Khanal Dai was truly outstanding. The restaurant's atmosphere was cozy and inviting, which added to our enjoyment of the meal. The dishes we ordered were exceptional - each one bursting with flavor and expertly prepared. We particularly loved the Chicken chilly and the Buff Sukuti set, which were both absolute highlights of our meal. It was evident that a lot of care and attention had been put into each dish, which made the experience all the more special. I have been here twice after joining my new workplace and discovered that the place has been open for over 2 months. Its been a delightful discovery in Sunnyvale! I don't think I had ever had Nepalese food before so I gave it a try. It is a medium sized restaurant with dark wood seating and television screens up above the doorway and in the corner. It is not a fancy place and it can accommodate larger groups. I had never seen an Indian/Nepalese restaurant with that. I have had the mango lassi, Chicken C Momo, Buffalo C Momo, samosa, Chicken Biriyani, and Butter Chicken. I really liked the C Momo dishes because of the spicy garlic sauce, red bell peppers, and red onions. I do prefer the Chicken one over the Buffalo. I really like the sourness and saffron-like taste of the rice in the Chicken Biriyani. The Butter Chicken is heavenly. The chicken is juicy and flavorful regardless how they are made. The portions are generous and not too expensive. I cannot wait to try more. read more
