Where are the complaints about the slow service? I am positive I can't be the only one who has been completely disappointed in how long it takes to get sat, helped, and served here. I just went on a Sunday despite vowing last time not to come back but craving struck. It took an hour. For four rolls. On a Sunday when we were one of three tables. As a hostess I understand a Friday and Saturday night taking a while but come on...a dead Sunday afternoon in the heart of Provo? Its just not right. And after all the waiting the rolls were the worst i have had at Sumo to date! Will never be returning, Sushi Ya and Kyoto have my business for life. read more

I am a regular at happy sumo and finally I decided to express how much I like this place. The staff is fantastically friendly, the food is very tasty. Once upon a time this place was wonderful, fresh, and inventive. Truly a place to bring friends and coworkers for an outstanding food and service experience... so what happened? My cosmopolitan roll, seaweed and squid salad looked like they came from an all you can eat buffet. The help is okay. I went back on three separate occasions to be sure. I honestly felt profiled in this place as if I wasn't worth the trouble of service because I didn't look super wealthy. People around me were being served consistently much faster. We waited forever. Went on a Friday night. Wait for two people was about 25 minutes. Service was prompt and good. Had miso glazed salmon. My wife had shrimp tempura. Both tasted great but over priced in my opinion. On special occasions my Husband and I enjoy eating Sushi at Happy Sumo. I love their Venus Rolls and the Beef Bowl. Yum yum!

Not a huge fan of this place. The Vegas roll tasted super fishy and the rainbow crunch roll had huge chunks of red onion which overwhelmed the whole roll. You can find ether sushi in a grocery store. read more

Wow, I read the reviews and it seems like people do not like this resturant, but I have enjoyed it everytime I have went. Although I drown my sushi in wasabi and soy sauce (which may make the difference). I happen to love the fact that you can have cream cheese in your rolls. Although it is not authentic, it just goes well. It is like pineapple on pizza. I went to one place that wouldn't serve it to me because it wasn't authentic, but it made it a less enjoyable for me. Anyway, back to the Happy Sumo... I enjoy it but the price is high, therefore the four stars. read more

Somehow I find myself walking out of this place 5-6 times a year, and I always think the same thing. Great atmosphere, good for business meetings but a lot of that is the pretty exterior, i.e. atmosphere, booths, servers etc... Not the sushi. It is good, but not great. They do have a teriyaki skewer, tempura veggie box that is good and surprisingly inexpensive ($10) and filling. Playboy is my favorite roll. Maguro is solid. They do get a few points in my book for the sheer volume of roll options they have. Would give Happy Sumo a 3.5 stars if I could, but not 4. In the Riverwoods so parking is abysmal especially on weekends and in the winter when you have to park far away and walk in. read more

Best Sushi in Utah County! The Mango Mama is my favorite roll but I've tried most of their rolls and have never been disappointed. Plus if you get on their VIP e-mail program you get awesome deals every month. It can get very busy on the weekends but what place doesn't? The service is always very good and prompt. My favorite place for introducing sushi! I have brought multiple friends and family to Happy Sumo knowing if they haven't tried sushi yet, they'll love love it. There's plenty of non sushi menu items for the cautious, but any rolls they try will be a win. Great dining experience for a girls lunch, treating family from out of town, or a romantic dinner for two. Provo location has always had wonderful servers and The Riverwoods has great shops to walk around after you fill your belly with delicious food. We went the day after Christmas for lunch and it was pretty empty. We got a booth in the back, that had a curtain we could drop for privacy, which I imagine would be nice for a date. It is definitely lively and there is an eclectic mix of loud music playing, so it made the cozy booth rather less cozy. But none of that has to do with the food. I will say the one roll with lemon and salmon was nice, light and buttery and I absolutely recommend it. 3 stars as the rolls range from 8.95 to 12.95 and other than the salmon roll I didn't like the meal. The tempura was oily and didn't have much taste to it. From what I saw of the meals ordered (General Chang's Chicken and the Hawaiian Chicken) they were also oily. I would recommend the Hawaiian Chicken over General Chang's. The edemame are great, but then again how can you go wrong with edemame? The sushi was good for Utah, but it as everyone has pointed out is "novelty sushi." Overall the taste of the fish is covered by various sauces (which I was glad for as the tuna was decent this far from the ocean, and the shrimp was absolutely awful). read more

Me and my wife just moved to Utah from California where delicious high quality sushi places are prevalent! We decided to go here for our anniversary lunch. It was a nice looking place and the decor was fine. But the food made us both very sick! My poor wife was throwing up the rest of our anniversary. We didnt even order sushi! we ordered a noodle dish and some fried items and we got bad food poisoning. It was most definitely from Happy Sumo since we hadnt eaten anything at all that day. The food varied widely in temperature, some items were cold and old tasting. I think there was likely cross contamination with the fish or somthing. We should of known better when we walked in and realized the men preparing the sushi were all young college looking white guys! haha I dont think ive ever seen a non asian preparing sushi at any sushi place ive ever been in California. I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO THIS LOCATION AGAIN. This place should not even get one star. I did not even get to try the food because I was so rudely DESCRIMINATED against from the moment I walked in with my 7 latina cousins. We had made a reservation which we changed twice before 1pm to add more people (keep in mind the reservation wasnt until 8:30 so that was plenty of time to make any changes). We were 30 mins early to our reservation and decided to sit inside because it was so cold outside and we were treated like TRASH from that moment on. The manager, Tenille, kept telling us very rudely that our reservation wasnt until 8:30 like 5 times, as if wanting us to get out. I asked if it was against reservation rules to sit inside while we wait since we felt like we were getting thrown out of the restaurant. She told us that there were other peple waiting for their own reservations and proceeded to be SO RUDE. When I pointed out to her she was being rude (and not even in a mean tone, just an matter of factly kind of way) she told me that I WAS RUDE for changing a reservation. When my cousin tried to get her to calm down and asked her talk lower so we were not involving the whole restaurant in what was happening she told us that she did not want our business and that we could even contact the owner if we had complaints because basically she did not care. I did not know that changing a reservation from 4 people to 8 people was bad for business but maybe I was wrong. I wish more people would have seen the way we were being treated because we were in no way trying to start anything. We had just gotten out of Women's Conference and were excited about a fun place to eat Sushi at. DO NOT GO HERE and support descrimination. I have never in my life been so embarrased. I have already spoken to the general manager and plan to take action until she no longer works there. read more

Let's face it...if you really want fresh sushi, are you going to go some place in Utah? If you are, it had better be close to the airport in SLC. Vegas, San Fran, San Jose, Seattle, etc. Those are where your going to get stellar sushi. That being said, this place isn't bad when you can't get it elsewhere. Their prices are a but high for the quality of the sashimi, but what do you do when your landlocked. Personally , I'd rather wait til my next trip to Vegas or LA. read more

For Provo, Utah, this sushi was fantastic. We had a few of their signature specials, as well as a few nigiri. The signature rolls were creative and delicious, but what really stole the show was the freshness of the fish. Salmon, yellow tail, maguro... all very good. read more

I have been going here several times a month for 5+ years and have never experienced the poor customer service provided by manager Ammon this weekend. This is a "go to" place for anyone and don't misunderstand me, the food is exceptional. This is the best for Sushi in Utah County, all of the sushi rolls I have tried, firecracker, rock'n roll, California, jazz, sunset, mia, starlight are just great. But the best thing here is the Vegas Roll, tempura dipped to perfection. Atmosphere is nice, even private it you want to pull the curtains. And if not into the raw thing there is other great items. I've had the mandarin orange chicken salad, very nice dressing that came with it. Now yeah, it is a bit pricey but better pay a little more and get great food, then go to a cheap sushi place and get sick.... OVER CHARGED ME $100! Took some friends here about 3 weeks ago for some appetizers and drinks. The service was fair but due to a "technical glitch" they charged my debit card twice. After 3 weeks, 6 emails, and 4 phone calls, the money is STILL not back in my account. They tried to rectify the situation with a $25 "come back and see us again certificate." Im hardly tempted to go back and lose more money -given the fact I was robbed of almost $100! And I'm sorry I tipped 25% for what turned out to be lousy service overall. read more
