With the service always being slow and the prices on the high side Hawk's Head does make up for in atmosphere. If you have lots of time, are prepared to spend a bit more for your meal and love rustic then you should take an afternoon to experience Hawk's Head and Oak Glen. read more

My husband, son and I clearly came on a bad day if all these reviews are accurate. Our service was terrible. People were seated after us and received food before we even got drinks. And when we asked what the issue was we were told our waitress was not trained. Great...and helpful. By the time we got our food.....we had been there about an hour. Food was fine except my son's grilled cheese was served burnt....like black. When we told the waitress she just stared at us blankly and said "......so.... What do you want me to do about it." First time to Oak Glen. The food here was excellent. Everything tasted fresh. I had a ground beef pastry dish and my mother had the chicken pot pie. the crust on both were top notch. There was crust on the bottom of the pot pie and for me that's the mark of a good pot pie. It's very disapointing to me if there isn't a bottom crust. The ground beef in my dish was very well seasoned and the gravy wasn't too over powereing. The green beans on the side were out of this world. The atmosphere was great too. I especially liked the live band of chamber music. I thought that was a nice touch. Our waitress was pleasant but very unattentive also their hard ciders are not house made, they're commercial from a bottle. Thats what kept this place from getting 5 stars in my book. I was really excited to visit this place. I love colonial history and any restaurant where people dress up to serve you food. Riley's Farm is lovely and this seemed like the perfect way to spend a Saturday. The Good: The interior of the restaurant is magnificent. I loved it! Everything from the seating (even though they are ungodly uncomfortable) to the menus (so perfect). The musicians that were played were fantastic, and the concept is amazing. The Bad: It was pretty busy there. A host sat us in the middle of the restaurant and then we got completely ignored. Even after the owner saw that we hadn't been served and grabbed a busboy to get our drink order, we still waited another good fifteen to twenty minutes to get our order in and then our server asked what we wanted to drink (the busboy obviously didn't tell her). When she brought our drinks she gave us the wrong tankards (my husbands beer should have come with a chilled one, but she put my ginger ale in that one). Just observing the servers and busboys, it was obvious to me most of them lacked the training it takes to treat your entire station like a single table. They were extremely inefficient and the busboys were unhelpful. They spent most of their time looking around aimlessly when they could have been clearing plates from the table to help the servers out. They were a hot mess. Guests that were sat long after us got their food before we did with no apology. The food was nothing to write home about. The corn chowder was runny and too sweet -- more of a soup and less of chowder. We shared the bratwurst sandwich which was rather light on the bratwurst. The pasta salad was decent. The owner was kind enough to comp our drinks, but the damage was done. I would like to come back and give it another chance, but we felt uncomfortable and ignored, so I'm not sure if we will. I think that they need to train their servers and up the quality of their food. They have all the other ingredients to make their restaurant a really amazing experience. read more

It doesn't take a lot to impress me and this place fell way short. As we were waiting for our table we used the one stall bathroom. I should have known by the lack of cleanliness that the meal wouldn't be any better. The soap box was laying on the floor and their were no paper towels. The music being played by the ensemble was so incredibly loud that you could not even hear the person seated next to me speak. Beware if you have small children. The metal candle holder in each table is extremely hot. Do not try to move it out of the way. The small child at the table next to us received a severe burn. Please keep in mind this place has NO AC. It is extremely in the fall. The waitress was sweating. We ordered the roast beef sandwich and chicken pot pie. The roast beef and the chicken pot pie were so hot that we had to wait to eat it. It had obviously been nuked in the microwave because the green beans were ice cold. This just means they prepare everything ahead of time and then reheat it all. The drinks are all in glass bottles so don't even think about getting a refill. This is a huge problem in a hot restaurant with super hot food. Do not get caramel on your apple pie. It's not a creamy caramel. The caramel is rock hard and gross. I was just not impressed with this restaurant at all. The only thing that was good was the servers. We won't be back read more

This was was a great find. Our first trip to Oak Glen and we chose this restaurant based on the reviews. I must say, the rating speaks for itself. The food was excellent. I ordered the flagship entree chicken pot pie. My brother ordered bratwurst sandwich...both amazing. We also ordered the recommended app Stilton cheese....heaven! Service was so friendly. The only problem, we were too full for desert...next time though. I highly recommend this restaurant if you go to Oak Glen. It's located within Riley Farm. This is a really cute place where they have apple picking (we were to early in season to do this); mercantile store, animals farm, and orchards. Great to walk around after a big meal. We've been here twice, in the past few months. Once on a weekday and today, the start of apple picking season. It was busy, and we had a 35 minute wait for a table, but it was fine. We killed time by investigating the store, and trying samples of the apple cider and apple cinnamon sauce, which we ended up buying. We then sat in the shade of a fully loaded apple tree, enjoying the scenery and the butterflies. The food is served in jumbo portions, and is pretty tasty, although a bit on the bland side. Over the two visits, we ordered the mac n cheese, chicken pot pie, open faced roast beef, turkey sandwich, roast beef sandwich, sides of green beans, potato salad, pasta salad, apple sauce, apple pie, baked pear with cinnamon ice cream, and our server Sarah hooked us up with an off-menu plate sized hot chocolate chip cookie. We each tasted all of the food, and agreed that we liked it. The desserts were our favorite part of the meal, but the chicken pot pie and sandwiches were pretty darn good. I would have added more seasoning, to almost everything, but a lot of people like it as is. I really don't have any complaints, and would return. There is also another restaurant at Riley's that serves bbq, and hamburgers, and doesn't have much of a wait. This is a great place to bring kids, for a day of apple picking. read more

Pro: Colonial re-creation of a tavern, located at Riley's Farm. You pay for the atmosphere as well as the food. There is nothing better than to sit in front of the huge fireplace fire, warming yourself on a cold day! The servers are even dressed in period costumes, and they are very attentive! They are known for their pies, so the Chicken Pot Pie and Scottish Forfar Brodie are delicious! The side of cooked apples was good, not to sweet. They have an extensive beverage selection, and the cold ones are served in chilled Pewter Tankards. Of course, the Apple Dumpling with Carmel sauce (optional) and pie are delicious! The have live music on the weekends. Con: No music during the week. The side of Green Beans was cold and limp. We ordered Iced Tea, but had to send it back, as it was stagnant tasting. The server had fresh tea made, but it was very weak. Recommendations: Offer more selections on the menu using your wonderful pie crust. Different kinds of Quiche perhaps. The atmosphere is great! Beautiful campgrounds, amazing wholesome food, and good customer service. The only downfall is the long wait. It took 1 hour and a half to get seated. It was unfortunate because I saw many tables needing cleaning and when I pointed it out to the host they said that the busboys were all busy. An amazing and unique place to eat - there's nothing else like it in California. Hawk's head is perfect mixture of re-enactment and food and, if you come during ones of the times when they have live 18th century music playing, it really completes the experience. Our family had gone to Riley's for 2-3 years in a row to pick Apples before we tried the restaurant. Now, I'd say Hawk's Head has become the main event for us. You really sense that this is a well run operation when you're there and that it's something special. Our favorites: Forfar Bridie, Hamburg steak, the Apple Dumpling and, a beer served in a very cold, very heavy, metal tankard. read more

This was my first time visiting The Hawk's Head. I had long awaited eating here and I was SO disappointed after having an early dinner there tonight. We were seated around 3:00 and we didn't receive our meals until 3:55!!! We were a party of 3. We sat for 15 minutes asking for a waitress, and when she finally came over she said she didn't realize she had our table. Then, she forgot to bring our drinks so we didn't receive them until 20 minutes later. We then waited about another 25 minutes or so for our food to arrive. The food was good, but the entire experience wasn't worth driving all the way from Burbank!! No need to come back again! read more

My kids and I took my wife here the day before Mother's Day for brunch. This is probably one of our favorite places in California now. It's a nice drive up into Oak Glen and when you walk into the Hawk's Head it really is like traveling back in time. The staff stays in character, but not to the point of making you uncomfortable; so it's still okay to order a Coke or ask if they take Visa. Great service and awesome food! Wonderful food, excellent service (Caroline was so kind and efficient), incomparable atmosphere! Riley's Farm is beautiful and relaxing itself. We love American history and enjoy the different areas that are specific to different time periods. The Hawk's Head is the perfect jewel in the crown! You really feel like you've stepped back in time. The menu offerings are appropriate to the time and very reasonably priced (which surprised us). We are a family of five and ordered five different things - every single one was perfect. The bread is fresh and hot, the pot pie is to-die-for, and my cider-glazed ham with mashed potatoes could not have been tastier. I recommend going on a weekday, if possible. During apple-picking season, the Farm is packed with tourists. As with any tourist attraction, the incredible amount of people makes service less personal, food and drink delivery slower, tankard less cold... Obviously you can't go on an insanely busy day and expect individualized attention. But we have done both a Saturday and a Thursday, and the staff we have encountered on both trips to Riley's were respectful and caring. And dedicated to the preservation of a real Colonial experience. Go to Hawk's Head, and don't skip the mashed potatoes! They are awesome! read more

I went to this place with my group Lawndale Travel Club yesterday. These young people need to be trained in organization skills. Pot pie and Roast beef was the choice for our large group. They ran out of beef and three people did not receive their request of beef.. If you can't accommodate large groups, don't book the reservation. One of the servers came to our table making excuses. Such a delight! The location of this restaurant is absolutely beautiful, the waitress is very welcoming wearing traditional clothing. The smell and taste of the coffee absolutely fresh. We ordered the beef sandwich and an entrée very fresh the gravy with the meat was absolutely juicy. Next I come by I would love to order their desserts from the bakery. We stopped in on a cold day for something to warm us up and Hawk's Head did not disappoint. We were greeted by a full-fledged Revolutionary war re-enactment on the front lawn with a hundred or so schoolchildren and a whole troop of people in authentic-looking period costume leading them into battle. We stepped into Hawk's Head and felt like we were in a time warp that had taken us into an authentic 18th-century tavern. We heard that the building itself was constructed in England using authentic 18th-century construction methods without any nails and shipped to the site. (Whether it was true or not we can't say, but it looked very authentic). The food was plentiful and delicious. The green beans were perfect (fresh, and al dente). I've been to Riley's farm for everything but coming to the tavern. Today (a Thursday) we decided to have lunch after some apple and flower picking. The wait was about 45 minutes long and even longer for others after us. They don't take reservations. We filled the time with wondering around. Love the ambience. Old timey decor and candle lanterns on the tables. We ordered an appetizer of sausage and apples. It was huge and so tasty. Imagine salty sausage with apple pie apples. Okay maybe doesn't sound good to some but it was good. Also ordered chicken pot pie, open face roast beef sandwich as well as a chicken drumstick kids meal. The servings were generous. I was pleasantly surprised with how darn good the food was and couldn't believe I had never been here to eat. Do it! Put your name in for lunch or dinner and roam while you wait. Wonderful grounds! Beautiful. Picturesque. The service in the "tavern", not so much. Truthfully don't expect five star food. Let's call it cafeteria food. I wish I would have made it in time to have tried the bakery. I have heard wonderful things. I will definitely come again but maybe just for the atmosphere and some beer. Oh my goodness! The hubby and I were on our way back home from a few days in the desert, when we decided to take a detour and check out Oak Glen, since I had a hankering for apple cider. May I say, the reviews did not prepare me for how wonderful this restaurant really is. When we stepped into the restaurant, I thought they just hadn't turned the lights on yet... Until I realized there were no light fixtures in sight! The hubby and I were giddy - we love history, and this place is truly like stepping back in time. Our lovely host, Miss Garcia, led us through the dim room to a table next to a crackling fire; perfect for warming our bones on this dark, cold and icy afternoon. When she brought our drinks in tankards, I we couldn't help but grin. Then, we had some incredible chicken pot pie and beef pie, with some super yummy green beans, followed by a delicious apple dumpling! (only a tiny critique here -- if it's a really cold day, maybe skip the caramel sauce, as ours got pretty firm and sticky -- no big deal, just an observation.) The quiet room, warm food, crackling fire, and giant bottle of hard cider left us completely relaxed, making the Hawks Head the highlight of our getaway. read more
