Most excellent place for breakfast! Me and my girl are always on the lookout for local joints. Whether it is breakfast, lunch or dinner. The more mom and pop it is. The happier we are. Found this place when we ate across the street. Promised ourselves we'd go. Well today we went and we're not disappointed! This place met and exceeded our expectations. First off. It is small inside. Counter service as well as 8 or 9 tables inside. Two outside. But this is not about the space. Very kitschy inside though. Go and find out for yourself why. We loved it! But the food! The food is the star. I've been on the lookout for chicken and waffles ever since I went to Roscoe's in L.A. And I have found it! Crispy, succulent fried chicken atop a perfectly made waffle. OMG!!!! Heaven! My first bite my eyes rolled into the back of my head. My girl became alarmed when I couldn't speak after. I gave her a bite and her eyes got wide with delightful surprise. It's that good!!! No. Great! She had the chili cheese omelette. Another home run!! Spicy, neatly chili on to of a perfectly formed cheese omelet. With home-style potatoes. *sigh* I love this place. Our waiter, Cornelius, was awesome. Very friendly and attentive. Never let our coffee cups get low or cold. And he was very nice to talk to. We are going to be regulars for sure. This is one of those joints where you come in and you're immediately part of the family atmosphere they have going on. It's like the cheers of San Diego diners. We showed up at 5:45 on a Saturday morning, probably still smelling like sweat, beers, and shame from our night out before our early morning fishing trip. We did the basic stuff as far as eggs, bacon, toast, hash-browns, home fries, and even some corned beef hash. They had us out the door in 35 minutes, which worked out perfect. My husband and I had high hopes for this restaurant after seeing the reviews...unfortunately, we had a terrible experience. We were promptly seated and our order taken and that's where the positives stopped. I ordered the quiche and my husband ordered the English muffin sandwich. It took well over 35 minutes to get our food. I was willing to forgive the long wait if the food was exceptional, but it was completely forgettable. The crust on the quiche wasn't flaky and I ended up leaving it on the plate. It would have been better as a crustless quiche. My husband said I make a better English muffin sandwich than the one he was served here. There are probably dozens of better options in this area and I'm upset we chose this subpar restaurant to waste our money and, more importantly, our time. read more

I love this place. When I think of diners, it's places like this that I think of. The first time I went here, I was dropped off by a friend whilst suffering from one of the worst hangovers of my life. My friend's advice was 'Go in there, they'll sort you out'. How right she was. If you want fast food, then go somewhere else. However, if you want to take your time with some amazing food and actually be treated as a person by the staff. Corey is an amazing guy who takes the time to speak to everybody and actually remembers what they ordered last time, although this may be have been down to the fact that I was the only English guy that went in every week. Just plain good, like 'your-Mama-made-it' cooking. No frills dining where the food speaks for itself. We arrived at around 8:15 a.m. on Sunday morning after reading the Yelp reviews. Thanks fellow Yelpers for the suggestions, you did not steer us wrong. There was no wait for a table. I had the corned beef hash with two over medium eggs, hash browns, toast and the homemade jellies (strawberry rhubarb, apple butter and orange marmalade). My daughter had the traditional eggs Benedict with home fries. Both were fresh from the griddle delicious - not greasy, not too heavy but perfectly fattening enough without hurting our stomaches. I think that's a fine line these days. You know, it's stick to your ribs food but it's not Denny's version of mass production, it's a kitchen using the right ingredients they've just put together this morning. I love the cooking being done right behind the counter instead of in the back of the house. No surprises...LOL... Finally, big ups to Jennifer, our server. She's the grand-daughter of the founder of the restaurant - she shared. She just seemed like someone you know. It's a nice homey cafe. You watch them cook your meal right in front of you so you know it's fresh. The hot chocolate was great and it looks just as good as it tastes. Had the blueberry pancakes made with fresh blueberries, that melted right in your mouth. I couldn't have asked for me. read more

It's the kind of perfect breakfast diner I'd eat at every Sunday if I lived within the five miles. The service was fast and friendly; no issues about separate checks. Our first morning in San Diego we were looking for a place for breakfast and much needed coffee. I was still on EST so we out at about 6:30 AM. The Huddle was one of the few places open. We were also looking for a local diner instead of some chain. We had the breakfast sandwich which has eggs, bacon and cheese on an english muffin. We also had the egg and chorizo sausage scramble with tortillas and beans on the side. Both were good and contrary to another review the bacon was fine. We especially enjoyed the chorizo and eggs. The service was great and everyone was very friendly. We met the owner and enjoyed a very nice visit. The Huddle also has a great history. The owner founded and runs a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization called Special Delivery that delivers meals to individuals with chronic illnesses. Me and a few of my friends decided to try a new brunch place and found The Huddle on Yelp. It was awesome!! Our service was great and we were checked up on quite a bit. I had special ordered chocolate chip pancakes that were great. A couple of my friends got the chicken and waffles and loved it! Get the Coronado cinnamon roll. It's amazing. We had some of their homemade spreads which were incredible. The downside is it's a small place and so they lack in seating. It isn't great for groups of six or more. But the food and service is awesome. Not to mention its in a great part of town. read more

Homemade, diner style breakfast and lunch everyday starting at 5:30am. Family owned and operated. We got biscuits and gravy and chicken&waffles with a side of hash browns. Let me tell you, the gravy on the biscuits was probably the best I've ever had. The chicken was fried to perfection. The hash browns had so much butter on them, we didn't need ketchup. It seems like the kind of place where everyone knows everyone, like Cheers for breakfast. Will definitely be going back and you should too. The prices are relatively cheap for Mission Hills as well. I was craving a cinnamon roll, and a Google search led me to this place. As everyone has said, it has an old diner feel, and I thought it was pretty cozy feeling. I went on a weekday when there was practically no one there, which was nice. One of the staff was friendly, while the other seemed to be busy in his own world. I got the cinnamon roll that's grilled and covered in frosting, as well as a side of eggs and bacon. I was given samples of two of the jams, both of which were much too sweet for me, but worth a try if you're there. The bill seemed a little high, and nothing about the food struck me in a positive or negative way. read more

This is such a great cute little hidden gem. It was my first visit and definitely not my last. I literally live a half a mile away and hubby and I decided to walk. This is where the good people of San Diego go for breakfast. I walked in for the first time today and was greeted like a regular. The guy behind the counter seemed to know everyone and most of the tables were full. He was quick with my order (corned beef hash and eggs). The food was good, like a basic coffee shop should be. While I was in there, a couple offered to pay for the meal of another diner who looked to be down on his luck. When they asked, the guy behind the counter said someone else had already taken care of it. There was also a delightful blind lady that walked in and seemed to have the run of the place. It wasn't until later that I found out about the charity work they do feeding people out of the storefront next door. This is a restaurant ran by kindhearted people who serve their friends and take car of their neighbors. I'm looking forward to going back and trying the Chicken and Waffles. read more

I love this place. The cutest little breakfast place on Goldfinch. It's nice to have a casual and low key place in Mission Hills that I could walk to.
