I'm surprised there aren't a lot of recent reviews but we were so impressed tonight with our order. It was easy enough to order online and we managed to get a clam pie, sausage pie, cheese pie, and speck pie. The service was great for pick up and the shop seemed charming on this chilly cold night. We were worried that this wouldn't be enough for four of us (two adults and two growing teenagers) but they were surprisingly filling and we easily had leftovers for lunch. We loved all the pizzas... the clam was amazing as was the sausage. The speck was really good along with the egg on the pie. This was recommended on the Infatuation's list of best pizzas and seeing that they had a clam pie had to try it and so glad we did. Will look forward to heading back! read more

The pizza was pretty good! We had to order early to get any, and I wish they had delivery though. The bread was actually my favorite and I think I'd try one of the usual pizzas next time. The surfer was fine but I feel others would have reheated or traveled better too. There's no dine in and rarely any walk up order availability, so plan accordingly. They also have regular prosciutto but at the time we went it wasn't Italian and didn't have the depth I am used to. The crust and sauce was very good and they have other toppings so give them a try. I found this place as I am on a quest of great pizza that is as close to true Italian pizza as possible. The menu looked great so we went. We ordered the Norwalk and Pepperoni (please note that if you are in Italy and order a Pepperoni Pizza you will get a pizza with red bell peppers). We received our text and got the pizzas. Great crust cooked in a real wood fired pizza oven! The flavor of the arugula and ham with the tomato was fantastic. The sausage on the pizza was excellent. It's the crust that ties everything together to make it fantastic. The reason for not giving it 5 stars is: a) there is no indoor seating. b) there is only a small selection of beverages. c) you have to order on-line otherwise the wait is very long. Off and on I've been trying to order or eat at Independent Pizza since they arrived in Madison Park - many years ago! Since we live in the neighborhood, you would think it would be easy, right? Not even close. Every time we've gone, they've been closed, either for the day, a private function or a long summer vacation - during the peak summer season. When we tried to order by phone, they're usually closed or we would get an answering machine. When we tried to order online, they turned off their ordering options. Side note: Independent Pizza is right next to the beach. Rather than being prepared for a busy summer season when they could really get more bang-for-the-buck, they close for summer break. What weird ... and I mean weird business model. It has been years and I've never successfully been able to eat in (pre-COVID) or order for pickup. To me, Independent Pizza has become synonymous with elitism and snobbery. I seem to recall years ago that we did get through to order, but the pickup wait time was around 90 minutes. We passed because that was a ridiculous amount of time to wait. If you can actually get through to Independent Pizza and have enough money to rent the restaurant for a private function that closes it to the general public for a day it's supposed to be open, it's probably decent pizza. The ambiance certainly has nice appeal from the outside, where we peasants have to drool over what we wish we were special enough to order. After about 7-8 or maybe 9 attempts over the years since they've been in Madison Park, I've given up and won't even bother trying any longer. I'm sure the owners are very nice people, but every attempt to order has proven a disappointing experience of denial. Every. Single. Time. The pictures on their website and Yelp look like it's OK pizza. Nothing stands out as looking spectacular, but some definitely seem worth trying. However, our family repeatedly gave it our best shot to become customers and have a new regular pizza place since we like to support local neighborhood businesses, especially those independently owned. It must be nice to eat there ... for those lucky special to be able to order, but they should change their name from Independent Pizza to Elitist Pizza. It seems more appropriate. read more

What happened? Things got weird as soon as the tacky lace curtains went up. This used to be the best spot, great food - a nice place to dine-in. Ever since the pandemic, the interior looks like a junk yard (which I guess explains the weird curtains). I miss the Indie but the vibes it's giving off say "don't eat here" and "someone call the health department". Wish they'd clean it up and go back to business as we knew it. Such a disappointment. We had a craving for thin-crust pizza last week, and found the Independent Pizzeria on Yelp. You want a gorgeous pizza? Well then, this is the place for you! The Independent Pizzeria doesn't have a lot of tables, its space squeezed into a triangular wedge across the street from Lake Washington. But if you arrive and there is a wait for a table, the friendly staff can take your phone number and give you a call when your table is ready, giving you a few minutes to go down and check out the lake shore. We started out with a Caesar salad and the dressing on the salad is exceptionally delicious. The pizza prices are in the low teens, suggesting that they are personal pizzas. However, Independent's pizzas are big and may well satisfy the appetites of two. I ordered the Pepperoni pizza, served with mozzarella cheese, with Fra'mani Italian sausage and Crimini mushrooms added. JP ordered the Farmer, which comes with mozzarella, eggs, grana (a hard granular cheese) and speck di alto adige (another way to say prosciutto). As an endorsement, just as our pizzas arrived (and fairly quickly for that matter), a couple had just sat down next to us when they saw our pizzas. They loved how my Pepperoni pizza looked, so they ordered the same thing. Both JP's and my pizza were absolutely delicious. But note that spice-adverse me requested that they leave off the basil and oregano, which they thankfully did. I also ordered the Crater Lake Root Beer (JP stuck with his red wine), served from the tap. Crater Lake Root Beer does not taste anything like good ol' A&W root beer. Unfortunately, I found the Crater Lake to have an unpleasant bitter and chemical flavor. While the pizzas here are tasty and look great, I have to tell you that I am just not a fan of the Neopolitan baking method (bake for 60-90 seconds in a 900°+ brick oven) utilized by Independent and other places like Tutta Bella. Yes, the crust is thin, but I find it soggy and limp, probably best eaten with a fork. But having said that, the pizzas overall are still good enough that I would return. Last thing, Independent does need to drop the music volume by several decibels. It was difficult to hold a conversation. When we came in, we thought had time-warped to a Stockholm disco circa 1976, with ABBA blasting from the speakers. Still, a very decent restaurant, hence four stars. read more

Oh my goodness! This place is amazing. One of the best pizza places I've ever been to. The Independent Pizzeria is nestled in a cute neighborhood plaza in Madison Park. It's an especially great place to go to when it's sunny because there's a small patio that overlooks the water. You really can't go wrong here. We ordered a salad the mixed greens salad to share as well as the Twin Peaks, Farmer and Syracuse pizzas. The salad and all the veggies were so fresh and so good. The pizzas take a little longer because they're handmade, but SO worth it. The Twin Peaks had crimini mushrooms and plenty of sage for a savory take on a mushroom pizza. The Farmer had a soft egg which oozed over the other slices... so good. The Syracuse had these fantastic pickled peppers too with yummy slices of salami. Even though this was a lot of pizza, because it was so good, I probably could have eaten more. I was in the mood for a super-thin, flavorful margherita pizza. Their "queen" pizza hit the spot. I also ordered the Syracuse pizza. The toppings were capers, olives, peppers, and garlic. I also added artichokes. The capers added a different flavor, I don't know that I've had them on pizza before. Independent pizzeria is located in the Madison Park neighborhood, right on Lake Washington. There is space across the street to sit and enjoy your food as well as the restaurant. For someone who does not particularly search out for pizza, the Independent Pizzeria served one of the best slices I ever had. I ordered the New Haven pizza which includes a garlic oil base, mozzarella, and clams. It tasted perfectly salty, not fishy at all, and something I would eat if I was in a small restaurant in Italy. The crust was crispy on the outside with the right about of char from their artisan pizza oven. For $17, I was impressed. It's a small shop located in Madison Park and there is very little parking in the area. We picked up our food (they are takeout only) at 6:30 but had to order it at around noon. They sell out quick, a testament to their amazing pies, so make sure to order early through their website. Pro Tip: order your pizza and bring blankets to have a little picnic across the street at the beach park. read more

We luckily called at a good time because they said they could have the pizzas and salad ready in 15 minutes. All of the food was very good. The Stevedore had a good kick to it. The restaurant is set up with an eclectic yet welcoming and comfortable decor -mismatched chairs, a picnic table indoors and colorful outdoor seats with a view of Madison Park. The menu has a good amount of options for whatever you're craving but doesn't feel overwhelming with a set of pizzas and easy to choose add ons. We chose The Farmer and Stevedore, we loved both. The pizza has a great crispness to the crust and fresh tasting ingredients. The egg on the farmer was perfectly placed in the center so that everyone gets a bite with every slice, similarly there was a full slice of prosciutto on every slice. This tasted great but was a little hard to bite without the pizza falling apart. The stevedore has a blend of meat and onion but the mama's lil peppers really makes this a standout contrasting the flavors. All beers were local and all wines were sourced from small towns and vineyards both local and abroad. The wine list felt approachable and was easy to pair in a way that made you feel like a pro while still being a casual environment. Very good pizza. We ordered a few and I think the seasonal chanterelle one was the best. The pepperoni was quite good as well. The New Haven clam was fine but I think needed some salt to perk it up a bit. No tiramisu on Sundays (apparently it is made on Wednesday and sells out fast). Uses Tock for takeout orders which is a real drag. That app is tough to use. Better take out app and a bit more of a taste of the sea on the New Haven and it would be up to 5 stars. read more

Independent Pizzeria had their grand opening in Madison Park on April 23rd. They are at the very end of E Madison Street on the corner of 43rd. We went the day after their opening. The restaurant is very eclectic with different chairs, tables, and menus throughout. There is just one pizza maker, and a couple of wait staff (who are very friendly). The menu is very simple. There are a few pizzas on there (one size to choose from) a salad, and beverages (wine, beer, and soft drinks). The pizza is really fantastic. Better than any pizza I've had in Seattle yet. They are still working out some of the kinks in being an efficient restaurant, but given how good the food is, I suspect they will do just fine. My only concern is that there isn't much seating inside, and once this place gets popular it might be a bit of a wait for a table. read more

We just moved from Philadelphia and I'd heard bad things about pizza in Seattle, so my expectations were very, very low. But I was so pleasantly surprised. It was cute, quaint and fabulous. Service was a bit slow, and the lights were a little too dim, but I was willing to look past that when we got our food. These aren't NY-style pizzas, so if that's what you're looking for, keep looking. They are more, handmade, wood-fired pizzas that are just a bit bigger than the personal size. But everything we got (kids got the plain cheese, husband got the pepperoni and I got one with spinach, cheese, arugula and artichokes. YUM!) was fabulous. Plus, they have a great selection of beer on tap and root beer on tap. LOVE THAT! So glad we have this in Madison Park. read more

The pizza at The Independent is simply delicious - the fusion of tomato sauce, cheese, tasteful/unique toppings, and crust is quite heavenly. My wife and I have had the Stevedore, the Norwalk, & Twin Peaks - all top notch, European-style pizza. You can tell that the toppings are fresh/high-quality and not just grabbed from a plastic bin like in other places. For two people, you could probably eat 2-3 pizzas + a salad and waddle away quite satisfied. Tasty local beers and high-quality wines are also available. The owner used to work in the wine business, so he knows what's up. Highly recommended even if you don't live in the neighborhood. The space is cozy w/ lots of natural light. read more

I don't come here as often as I'd like, because the end of Madison is a bit out of the way, but that doesn't change the fact that this is one fantastic pizza place! Great location near the lake, delicious pizza. There's a trend in pizza places, at least in Seattle, to serve official Neapolitan style pizza, and jack up the prices to match the fancy certification label from Italy. Don't get me wrong, I love many of these places, but the last time I was at Independent, I noticed a sign explaining their philosophy and reasons for not joining getting the certification, and I realized that I was paying about 2/3 of the cost of some other places - $4 draft beer and $10 cheese pizza, and it easily matched or beat those places with the certification. One note of caution. Even of Independent isn't busy, you may end up waiting awhile, because it's clear that the locals have discovered this gem, and your pizza may be behind a long line of takeout pizzas, as happened to me recently. I love discovering spots like these... Nestled between the beach and small restaurant area, this pizzeria was a pleasant surprise! The inside eating area is pretty small, but on sunny days, it boasts a cute outdoor patio to seat a few additional tables and is a great place to people watch and enjoy the sunset. The thin crust pizzas came with just the right amount of crunch and toppings. We tried the Norwalk and New Haven pizza this time around, both of which were very good (The New Haven one was a little heavy on the oil this time tho) as well as the caprese which was a nice, light starter. Service was friendly and fast, and even though this area is a little out of my way, I definitely wouldn't mind making the effort to come back again. Yum! read more

We went last night for a date night and enjoyed the outdoor seating and the Lager beer. The pizza is for sure large enough to split between two people. We ordered 2 pizzas and had plenty leftover. The pepperoni was delicious! We also ordered the Stevedore and were disappointed, I wouldn't recommend that one. If we hadn't ordered the pepp the rating would probably just be a 3/5. I'd be back! Family in town and we visited the Madison Park area, surprised to find a decent pizza place at family member's recommendation. The pizza here are about $13-15 for a personal size, and thin crest is the way I like them. I rarely eat pizza outside of New Haven area these days, and this place is definitely a decent match. I particularly enjoyed the (forgot name but similar to Martguerita pizza) pizza the most. While the Stevenson(?) is not spicy as described, and the Syracuse is actually slightly spicier and tastier. Next time I will try their white clam pizza as well to see how it fares against the traditional New Haven pizzas. =) read more

Our group of 4 showed up at 9ish. We were told there was a 10-15 min wait. We were fine with that. After a while we realized they would be closing soon- we brought it up to their attention and they were MORE than accommodating and seated us quickly after some guest left. First let me say that the girls here are amazing. They are nice and down to earth! I like to make small talk - sometimes people are awkward or are even more awkward (lol) but not these ladies. They were genuinely very nice. They also had to deal with a small group of severely intoxicated people who kept stumbling in asking for drinks. They weren't customers, but the girls kept their cool and managed to get them out without any kind of disturbance. Our pizzas were very tasty. Deep down inside I wished I ordered another one togo. If you're looking for a place to grab some food before/after heading to Madison Beach, THIS is the place to be. First of all, it's super close - so if you're tired of walking, just go here. It has some seriously good pizza. We got the Roman and Stevedore pizzas for 3 people and it was just the right amount for us. The Roman has spinach, artichoke, and garlic on it - plenty of flavor and a little bit on the lighter side. The Stevedore has salami and some interesting red peppers on it that definitely gave it a little kick. Both pizzas come on a thinner style crust. I like that the pizza shop is small and that you can literally see into the kitchen/oven area. They also have some seasonal beers/wines that go great with the pizza. The pizzas are thin while not being too crispy and the cheese and toppings come in unique combinations that taste just as good as they sound for the most part. Given their location and atmosphere, I could see the pizzas being a couple bucks more across the board without me batting an eye (that's not a suggestion from me, just an observation). I would feel comfortable coming for a casual after work drink, a friendly meeting, a romantic outing or even takeout (the one that usually happens). It's a quaint neighborhood spot with charm to spare. If you enjoy a lighter pizza variety and the option to enjoy some wine in the open air near the water, you'll probably have a fantastic evening. This is the best pizza in Seattle. You can absolutely taste the love put into each pizza. Perfect combination of sauce, cheese, toppings. The crust is thing- definitely order your own. It still holds all the topping- you find any floppy crust here. TIPS: Try the stevedore, beta (w or w/out an egg), and whatever they're serving for a special pie. Salads are also all top notch- can't get enough of that caesar dressing, in fact you can just pour it straight into my mouth. Only (the finest) beer and wine here, a lot of really great italian wine selections. Second tip: come in, put your name on the list and go across the street to the attic to wait until they call you. Haven't reviewed in a while due to COVID, but stopped by here last night to pick up some pizzas and beat the heat. Wow, this was some of the best pizza I've had in Seattle. The crust was perfect--thin but chewy with excellent flavor. The toppings were perfect. We got a Syracuse (and added anchovies), a pepperoni and mushroom, and the Caesar salad with an extra dressing. Very disappointed. We're on vacation from Southern California and staying at a nearby Airbnb. We started out with a beer and glass of wine and the wine glass was horribly scratched and dirty. We told the waitress and she said it was not dirty and totally dismissed us. She said she would get us a new glass and proceeded to pour the wine from the dirty glass into the new glass. Very bad and unprofessional. Then the waitress never even came back to take our food order. She was also very sarcastic the rest of our visit. Didn't get her name, but a blonde, long hair, tight fitting dress. We didn't finish the wine and left soon after. I'm sure there are better pizza restaurants we can discover in the Seattle area. Since moving to Madison Park have gotten a pizza from here 4 times now every single time got something different, and every time its been delicious!!!!! Perfect size for just one person to end up having two slices for later or being VERY full after eating the whole thing. If you are planning to eat here be aware the seating for a group of more than 4 is very limited the one time we tried with 5 just ended up taking our food to go. read more
