So... where has this place been hiding??? It's a little out of the way for just a spur of the moment, but if you're hiking the C&O or visiting Glenn Echo, this isn't too far! Outdoor seat galore and indoor too... some of the door has umbrellas and some sheltered... so pretty nice. The wait staff is awesome, funny, and knowledge. Good suggestions and the such. However I can't believe that their speciality coffee machine was broken!!! Only regular coffee... good thing there were refills! The New England clam chowder was second very nicely. Having grown up in NYC, Irish bars are a dime a dozen. Service tends to be slow, and decor and ambiance is dark and murky. Not so the Irish Inn. The menu was balanced, the beers plentiful, and the music pleasant. I stayed traditional and enjoyed the Shepherd's Pie. It was delicious and well made. My fiancée ordered Bangers and Mash, and again, success. Their waitstaff was impressive, and seeing the place packed on a Wednesday as we left, I could understand why. We stopped in for brunch last weekend, and it was wonderful! Each table gets a basket of scones with fresh whipped butter. We started with the calamari - it was super fresh and hot, right out of the frier. It had the perfect amount of breading and was accompanied by a nice remoulade. The Bailey's French toast was unique and out of this world served with choice of Nutella, strawberry or maple syrup - really a must have show stopper. The fish and chips are a staple here! It was also nice and fresh with large potion of fish and fries. Beer batter on the fish not too thick and very flavorful. Quiche of the day was shrimp, pepper and onion served with salad greens. This place has existed as long as I can remember although I've never stopped in until today. They have plenty of indoornand outdoor spots to sit and they do a brisk lunch business on nice days. we were going for a family lunch and decided to try the irish inn at glen echo. it's in a beautiful location surrounded by a national park and lots of trees and nature. we sat in the covered patio (that was heated because it was cold outside) and ordered the fish and chips, the irish stew, cheeseburger and flatbread margherita. the irish stew was decent, the fish had good breading but needed more flavor, the chips/french fries were excellent, the cheeseburger decent and the flatbread topping tasted like you could make at home. the complimentary scones were amazing! overall, excellent ambiance and nature with average food read more

7/20/20 On this past Saturday, we return to this restaurant. I will be including writing about this restaurant in one of my books too. On this day my dad wanted to celebrate my birthday. This was the first restaurant that came to mind. Why? Oh that is easy. Because of the Sherpard's pie. I was planning on ordering the Sherpard's pie with a side of the yummy baby potatoes, but the potatoes weren't available on this day. The pie was delicious as the first time I ordered it. The dessert was delicious too. I don't remember having the apple tart pie lady time, but I also did eat in the Greenroom either. The green room was packed last year when I was here. Today we were the only ones eating inside the restaurant...unless people were eating upstairs. I haven't see the second floor yet, but I will come the next time we are here. We had two servers and one of them looked like a kid I knew by the name of Ben Sidies, but it couldn't have been him. He started our orders, but got busy with other orders later on. The other server took over and did a phenomenal job. I don't remember his name, but I would like to say thank you. We shall return. Oh, I forgot. This restaurant is an Irish themed restaurant, but this time around the food options did not seem like authentic Irish Cooking. Maybe the Coronavirus had something to do with the cooking options. Most people were eating outside even though you had the option of eating indoor. The restaurant inside and outside for the Coronavirus protection plan. 2 Sundays ago, my husband, our good friend from Wales, and I enjoyed a delightful Sunday brunch experience in the Pub. The food was delicious, the service was excellent, and Justin made us feel right at home. This was our 4th brunch at The Irish Inn at Glen Echo and we will be back again. But only for brunch. Because things took a significantly darker turn after the shift change when the vibe in the Pub grew tense. When requested by a new, not-so-friendly friendly server, we willingly gave up our table to make space for the band and moved to a high top table closer to the bar. Our welsh friend was in the mood for a Bailys Irish cream coffee and ordered 3 from the same server, one for each of us. But what he served us were 3 coffees with whiskey. Mistakes happen, no biggie. The server was nowhere in sight for quite some time. So finally she got up and went to go speak to the bartender who'd just begun his shift, regarding the error. While there, she pre-paid him for 3 Bailys Irish cream coffees. She returned to the table and told us that the bartender had accused us of drinking the coffees with whiskey. Then the same bartender came and served us our 3 Bailys Irish cream coffees, leaving all 3 coffees with whiskey on the table. After considering the news of having been unjustly accused, I gathered all 3 coffees with whiskeys, which neither of them had bothered to clear from the table, and returned them to the bartender so he could see for himself that we had no interest in them. Then went back to to table to try to continue having a nice time. Later our welsh friend wanted to introduce us to a Bailys and Cointreau so she ordered 3 of those from the server. She was right. They were delicious! Then, the not-so-friendly server surfaced and presented my husband with a bill for $85 for 6 drinks. Only 3 of which were outstanding - the 3 Bailys and Cointreau - because the 3 Bailys Irish cream coffees had already been paid for directly to the bartender. Over the next 15 to 20 minutes the same not-so-friendly server, with the support of the bartender, insisted multiple times that we hadn't paid for the 3 Bailys Irish cream coffees. When, in fact, she'd paid the bartender directly for them with a credit card, but wasn't given a receipt. Still, they both kept insisting we hadn't. When asked, the bartender claimed the system didn't keep records of payments, which still seems implausible. FINALLY he remembered the transaction and gave us a bill for the correct amount. We're all 3 very reasonable people with reasonable expectations. But by that time we had been so unfairly harassed we had no interest in staying for the music in what became a hostile atmosphere. After spending easily over $250 for the 3 of us our whole experience soured. If we weren't able to look back at the delightful brunch experience we enjoyed via Justin's crew, we would never again return to The Irish Inn at Glen Echo. But we will. We just won't stick around after the shift change for the abuse. p.s. Sorry, Management at The Irish Inn at Glen Echo, but you left me no choice. I really didn't want to go public with this experience, but it's been going on 3 weeks since you received 2 copies of this report. The 1st was directly through your website the next day. Not our first bad experience at IRISH Inn (and definitely our last!). The overall attitude of the waiters and staff was unprofessional and not customer friendly nor with the friendly spirit of the Irish. When asked to sit at a more convenient table for an elderly person, the waiter simply said "no" in a rough non-caring voice several times. When we pointed out that a Rubin is not made with Cole slaw and mayonnaise but sauerkraut and thousand islands, the waiter argued with us with vigor!!! Amazing! The Irish spirit and level of hospitality and cheer is no longer present at IRISH Inn. We visited another local IRish restaurant and appreciate the great food and positive and friendly service and caring attitude of the staff. Bye bye Irish Inn. read more

Had Saturday night dinner with 9 people. Our server (David) provided prompt and impeccable service. Everyone was very happy with their meal. Including Rack of Lamb, Beef stroganoff, Guinness stew, chicken pot pie, roasted Salmon. Appetizers and desserts were all equally good The atmosphere was lively and everyone friendly. This is a solid choice of restaurant, friendly service, decent food. It's in a location that doesn't have a lot of other options, so it doesn't take a lot to stand out. I consider it the friendlier cousin of Old Angler's Inn. More accessible, less pretentious, less expensive but still pricey. I'd give it 3.5 stars had that been an option, but giving it 3 stars felt like an insult. It's better than that. I don't go out of my way to eat there, but I usually enjoy myself when I do, and sometimes I want to sit somewhere nice in Cabin John. read more

I have eaten at the Irish inn several times over the past few months and the service is always consistent and the people very friendly -the food is what I would call American/ Irish and depending on who is in the kitchen can be hit and miss the most authentic and most consistent is the Irish breakfast on weekends with pork sausages and Irish bacon, black/ white pudding etc - it is the BEST in the DC/MD/ VA region- also the soup of the day is always excellent and the home made Ice Cream which takes some culinary skill they also pour a decent pint of business - The decor and building could do with an upgrade as the FF&E is dated but overall well maintained. The Irish Inn has expanded outside and it now feels like a fun beer garden in nature! We enjoyed grabbing draft beers and dinner after our hike. I went here for brunch with some friends and it was a lovely little spot. Our waitress was really nice to all of us and checked on us often for water and coffee refills. I tried some of the baileys Irish cream French toast and had topped it with Nutella and it was HEAVEN I definitely needed the extra eggs because I wasn't too stuffed after finishing my French toast and sausage it came with. My boyfriend ordered the Irish breakfast (which means I get to eat it too) and everything was so good. The tomato with the meat was a nice contrast. worst dining experience of my life. I attended this restaurant a month ago I was greeted warmly by the female waitress outside and a man who I am assuming was the owner I asked if I needed a reservation and they said no you could go right on in. they were nice they are not the person I had a problem with. I sat down and picked a table myself I was not escorted to a table or handed a menu. then a male waiter with the name tag "Rodriguez" slapped a menu on my table he didn't even say hello to me or how are you he just put it there and then left as I went to go pick what I wanted. I asked him what the soup of the day was and it was potato soup and so I ordered that and a glass of water. I was already depressed because I was grieving the death of my husband so I was crying silently while I ate. I didn't expect him to comfort me but it factored into what happened next. Then when I was done with my order he came to my table and just asked me "that's it??!" in a rude tone and I said yes then he snatched my menu. I also noticed that another table had come in after me and he served them before he served me and he was acting much differently being very animated and friendly with them and not me, even though my order would have been much shorter than theirs to make. I went to the register to pay for my meal, I did not tip him. He YELLED at me and said no tip? then he came closer to me in a threatening manner and said "THIS IS MY LIVING YOU KNOW" and I said I apologize I'm sorry I am recently widowed my husband just died I am a housewife Im not rich anymore i can't give you a *****ing tip." then he yelled at me even louder and said DONT USE THAT LANGUAGE WITH ME then he doubled down and said I'm sorry I didn't know that DONT USE THAT LANGUAGE WITH ME and I said ok then don't come for me and I tried to de escalate the situation by taking my receipt and walking out the door and he continued to YELL AT ME as I walked out the door "I WASNT TRYING TO COME FOR YOU" as if he didn't get in my personal space and haggle me for a tip when he wasnt friendly towards me, I wasnt in the restaurant for more than 20 minutes and my order cost 7 dollars and nineteen cents. the total was so small I can still remember how much it cost without the receipt in my hand. never in my life have I had a waiter or waitress harass me for a tip, and I am someone that tips of my meal is over 15 or 20 dollars and if I have a friendly /polite waiter. I am not a stingy person but I'm not giving anything to someone who is so disrespectful. I am a young woman I'm very short and skinny and he knew I was crying in the corner and clearly already not in a great time while I was in a mourning period he thought he could intimidate me into a tip just because I was crying. I reported him to the restaurant and also left a review on google with the same information, I have no idea if RODRIGUEZ (Rodriguez is a last name not a first name) is still working at this establishment but if he is I am posting this so that anyone can be warned of a waiter that is rude to young women and thinks it's okay to yell at a consumer. and it upset me more that no other staff in close quarters did anything to correct him and stop him, or tell him maybe to not yell at me as I'm walking at the door. Men like this get too comfortable unless another man handles them. I will never visit this restaurant again and I have told every one I know not to come here anyway. the food isn't stellar to begin with my soup was bland and didn't have much potatoes in it, for it being a potato soup. I also wrote an email to the Irish Inn at glen echo at their professional email and never received any answer with them. No "I'm sorry" no word if they reprimanded this person and if they still let them work there or fire them, I don't respect any owner that lets employees act like this. The economy isn't great I'm sure if you had fired him you would be able to find another man or woman that would do the same job ten times better. For someone that cries about tips for their living you would think they would be more grateful for a job. read more

Decent but underwhelming food, inconsistent service, combined with very high prices lead to this review just barely scraping up to three stars (honestly, it probably should just be two stars). This restaurant is a landmark, though, and I *really* want it to be excellent given its wonderful location (proximity to Glen Echo Park and just a quick turn off of Clara Barton Parkway) and iconic name and history. A rather disappointing first experience. I made reservations two days before hand for Friday lunch....@ 1130a and I specfically requsted the patio. When we arrived, there was virtually no one else there. We were told the patio was closed. We were seated in the main dining room, a nice quiet two top in the corner. It turned out it's restaurant week so they had some nice specials...several entrees that two could spit for $15. We each opted for the Special which was a garden salad with pecans, feta cheese and four very tasty grilled shrimp. Our serve was attentative but as it became busier...she became less so. Pretty soon, we didn't see her but had to ask one of the water servers for coffee. When we got the coffee, the cream was bad...so we waited...and waited. still no server. Finally the same water server came by and after flagging him down, finally got another cup of coffee. It was barely warm...so not a good ending to what started out as a promising first time lunch. I probably won't go back until it cool's off enough to sit out on the patio. read more

BEWARE : USE CASH IF YOU CAN : READ YOUR BILL, CAREFULLY!!! Jan2023 - On a $75 bill with a few friends, I left a $24 tip. I round in such a way I know if something is off when I see the charge on my card. I was not going to make a big deal of my $24 tip getting changed to $29. I know the times are tough for service industry folks, so I let this slide. Feb2023 - The bartender tried to slip a drink from my neighbor at the bar onto my tab. I came to eat dinner and only drank wine, so when I saw a beer on my tab I was confused. While I have bought drinks for women at bars before, I was not trying to buy this person a drink, she was kind of rude when I made light conversation and seemed preoccupied with her phone and writing on napkins. Her weirdness was enough entertainment, and I was happy to just watch her franticly text and scribble her notes out on the bar, but I am 100% positive I never offer her a drink. Yeah, the bartender fessed up and made the correction, but if I didn't look at my bill, I might have not caught on to this. Despite this, I left a reasonable tip. Mar2023 - Went again with a friend, and we ordered a drink that was Grey Goose with a splash of Baileys on top. My friend drinks these often and it is usually a sub-$20 drink in the surrounding area. I was a little shocked to find that 6 drinks cost $150. Turns out they charged us $12.50 per ounce for Grey Goose and $12.50 for a shot of Baileys, so 2 drinks in 1 glass. We were never told, we assumed we were getting ~$15 each drink. When I asked the manager, he explained their policy is that they have a drink list, and if you order ANYTHING off the drink list, they charge $12.50 per ounce, rail or non-rail liquor. Again, it would have been nice if we were told this before ordering 6 drinks. I then asked how much a Long Island tea costs, seeing that 5 liquors would make this a $62 cocktail. The manager replied that drink costs less because "we use 1/2 shots", but that still brings the price down to $31, with rail liquor! (Based on their method of pricing). I did check and the official recipe calls for 1/2oz portions of the 5 liquors in that cocktail. I was so upset I went back and checked my charges for the last year at this place, I had about 6 visits over the last 12 months. Lucky for me, my bank has credit card records that go back that far online. I found they had adjusted the tip the previous September 2022, this time it was a $34 tip altered to $39 once again. The other charges appeared to not be altered, so 4 honest charges out of 6, with 2 having the tip adjusted by their staff. Not worth the trouble for $5, I will live with the fact they altered the amount I tipped them after the fact. Honestly, I do not feel welcome here. I like the food and atmosphere of this place, and the music is spectacular. Despite all of this, I might go back, but I will 100% bring cash and never drop my card here ever again. read more

Good pub fare in a nice setting, but a little-overpriced. My wife and I each had a couple of drinks, a cup of soup, and fish and chips, and the total bill (before tip) was $116. The food was good, but, really, was pretty standard pub fare. The atmosphere is nice. Very cozy, clean, and warm dining room. You can also eat in the pub, which is pretty traditional (wood booths and floors, tvs, etc). The staff is good too. The waitress was really nice and accommodating. Friendly, professional, but not so professional that service wasn't warm. Location is pretty convenient--about 5 minutes off of 495, right over the va/md state line. In sum, good pub fare and environment, but you can probably find similar options for 20-25% less. read more

Dropped in for a drink on our anniversary (12/14). NO ONE was masked but we were turned away because we didn't have a mask at the door. I literally stood and looked around the room. Only the bartenders were masked from where I stood. No one the room at bar level was masked. NO ONE but we were turned away. My family has celebrated Holy Communions, Confirmations, and birthdays here. The gentleman (I use that loosely) at the front door was unmasked as well. So many good vibes down the drain. read more

Irish Inn, Glen Echo is tucked away just behind one end of Glen Echo park. All by itself, it is a quaint, very authentic Irish-style pub and restaurant featuring traditional meals, lunches, beers, mixed drinks and homemade deserts (as an added bonus). It attracts many, many people, from local regulars to business colleagues out for a special celebration. It has been there for quite some time, and is always a good experience. Never had a problem with service the few times I have enjoyed the place. Mostly it's nice to eat on the covered deck which even is wonderful into chilly fall weather thanks to the space heater lamps. Once, I got to eat upstairs in winter which is a cozier, but more homely experience. Food presentation was great, upstairs is tight quarters. There is extensive downstairs seating too--the restaurant takes the entire building. Some of the specialties are meats/ burgers etc,; fish and chips is not to miss! Private parking, and recently valet complementary. Gets busy at peak dinner times around 6:30 I believe. Well known and loved--for good reason. Check out the tastefully-done website. The one thing that this place has going is location, as in they have no competition and are in an affluent area so they can overcharge for all of their entrees. The food is good, nothing special, but good. I love a good pub with warm food any day but I mean $21 for fish and chips is EGREGIOUS! It is literally fried cod and french fries. And Fish tacos for $18, you would expect there to be 3 tacos... nope only two and no sides just garnish and toppings. Also, the owner/manager asked us if we could please leave about 5 minutes after we paid the check because there was a wait for a table. Rather than checking to see (a) how much we had spent or (b) how long had it been since paying the tab... me and my two friends had a bill for over $150 and that we were literally finishing the last sips of our drinks and about to put our coats on. We also probably would have left faster if the only waiter in the bar hadn't waited until our first round was finished for oh about 20 minutes before coming over to ask if we wanted another. I've been to the Irish Inn a few times primarily because there is no where else in the area but seriously I try to avoid the place if I can. For just a pint, yeah this place is a nice atmosphere ... however, if you feel like blowing money and being rushed out the door for having just a few mins of conversation after your meal, then this is the place for you! read more

Not likely to return. I went in today at the lunch hour with my friend to just grab a beer and enjoy our break. Upon ordering the drink, I was carded and presented my license. The waitress informed me that she could not serve me so I checked to make sure it wasn't expired and once I realized it wasn't, I asked if there was something wrong with my license. She then told me she would have the manager come over and explain so I politely obliged. As soon as the manager came over to our table, without acknowledging either of us, he immediately began reciting a Montgomery County policy about vertical licenses versus horizontal. I live in Virginia and I regularly use my vertical license to obtain drinks at bars and restaurants so this was the first time I was hearing about it. I never mind being told about a business policy, however, it wasn't until he made the statement, "if you don't have the gumption to replace your license, we don't have to serve you." It was hard to even come up with a response because of how rudely he was speaking and how dismissive he was from the jump, which was then confirmed with my friend after he left our table. I'm never one to write reviews, and I am typically always trying to give people certain benefits of the doubt. However, it wasn't until he facetiously called the ID policy "fascist," insinuating that I probably would have said something to the same extent later, that I realized he was condescending to me for pretty much the entire interaction. He never once apologized for the inconvenience, he essentially called me lazy and entitled. Needless to say, I won't be returning, and I highly encourage the manager of the establishment to learn how to speak to a patron, especially when answering an extremely simple question. read more
