Some places have limitations, and if you know that going in, then you can have a fine experience. The Irish Inn is one of those places, or so I thought. First visit was for a beer after visiting Glen Echo. The pub is small and charming and it has Irish beers on tap. Decided to go back for dinner. Big mistake. Food was terrible and we saw a bug. Ok, we'll stick to the pub from now on. Had a couple of good pub experiences. However, on most recent visit the place had a noticeable smell of disinfectant. Not overwhelmingly so, but when you breathed deep it was there. I thought maybe it was because we were close to the bathrooms, but no, the bathrooms were fine. We should've left, damn we should've left. My friend wanted appetizers. I knew better, but I was hungry. Now, here's where it gets tricky. When I've gotten food poisoning in the past, it's hit within six hours and I'm sick until the offending item gets purged. That six hourish window helps identify where I got sick. In this case, I didn't get sick until 24 hours later. But I think it was a virus instead of food poisoning because my body did a total GI purge. That was the most sick I have ever been. I can't be certain it was from the Irish Inn, but my friend said he had issues as well. So bottom line: yes to Irish drafts in the pub, no to any kind of food, and turn around and leave immediately if you smell any disinfectant. read more

5pm on a Saturday and they sat us outside right away. We didn't have to wait for drinks. They had really good support staff who bright out bread and water. Overall, fast and efficient service and they aim to please if you ask any employee a question. I got the 5oz filet, medium rare. When cut, it looked pink so I asked the server if this was MR to them and he said yes, you will see how tender it is. And he was right. It practically melts in your mouth. The vegetables were a little disappointing. Not much flavor and not much variety. Also I asked for the frites instead of mashed potatoes but apparently they aren't special- just normal fries. This is a pretty nice neighborhood pub complete with locals, bartenders and waitresses that know the locals, and a bit of divey feel. That's all a good thing and makes the bar (especially for happy our) a fun place to come. The restaurant on the other half acts a bit fancier than it is, is a bit overpriced and not quite as much fun. I've been here a bunch of times for the happy hour and one time for lunch in the main restaurant. My conclusions is to come for the happy hour and enjoy getting a Guinness or two. Don't bother coming for a bigger meal unless you have some reason to come here in particular, e.g., the location. Pretty much everything I have had on the happy hour menu has been delicious from the tacos, to the sausages, to whatever else. It's above average pub grub at great prices during happy hour and there's plenty to offer my 2-year-old son to keep him happy too. Beyond that the tap list is a pretty run-of-the-mill Irish pub. You can get Guinness, Smithwick's, cider and a few other things. Basically, I drink a Guinness or two and I'm happy with that. While I wouldn't show anyone from out of town this place as something they must see, it's still a fun place to go every few months. We can walk the mile down MacArthur from our house, have a nice family outing and walk back without having to worry about drinking and driving. read more

The Irish Inn at Glen Echo...co...co...co. Take a pass...ass...ass...ass. This relic should be relegated to the Ghost Town that once was the draw to the area; The Glen Echo Amusement Park, now deserted and closed. The Inn should share the same fate or make an attempt to re-invent itself. There is a nice outside patio set in rustic surroundings and inside there is a rat's warren of tired rooms with a vibe from shabby clubby to employees lounge in a mortuary. I needed a drink after making the trip from Rockville. After having one, I still needed one. A watered down Whiskey Sour (with a mix, I suspect) and a squishy Maraschino cherry instead of a luxurious Luxardo. (Bring a flask from home.) I ordered the Mediterranean Platter. Okay, my bad to order mezze in an Irish Pub. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Direct from the Kirkland Brand purveyors they served jarred pickled vegetables, Sabra Hummus (hopefully not the one recalled due to Listeria), a few olives, some sleepy Pita, something called Pesto Pita (right from the package) and Japanese Eggplant bathed in a heavy batter, fried, and topped with store bought salsa cold and soggy as a Golden Retriever puppy that fell in the pool. The basket of bread arrived long after the mezze. Well, actually it arrived two days before and had been sitting on the counter ever since. The doughy White Bread and the faintly molasses laced Soda Bread were as cold as the eggplant. Leave them both, you don't need the empty calories and if you must have something with your mezze or cocktail, just eat the butter. The menu was large. Fine. Choose wisely would be my caveat. The Rueben was as thin as Mom's after school grilled cheese if you were underprivileged. The Corned Beef, what little showed up was acceptable, but the Swiss Cheese was a dried lattice work of something long out of the Salamander and probably the Sell By Date. The few threads of store bought Sauerkraut were barely there and the Russian dressing had defected. Three types of mustard in jars appeared 15 minutes after we'd been served sandwiches. Irish Whole Grain with Stout, Whole Grain with Irish Whiskey, and Strong Irish (whatever that was). All pretty good, but who knows who's snot nosed Grandkid tasted each one with a wet finger? Just sayin'. Maybe put the mustard in little ceramic cups? The Irish Burger featuring Irish Cheddar Cheese bordered on inedible. A skinny dry patty (maybe the recipe was handed down from the famine years) on yes, a purchased bun, with a limp Romaine leaf, a mushy tomato one step from a Waste King and maybe the chef dragged a thin slice of cheese over the mess before service. Maybe. Dessert: A tasteless, flourless, room temperature disk of chocolate with Costco Dried Morency Cherries. (Hey, Chef, cherries are in season. How about something fresh?) along with a melon ball of Vanilla Ice Cream. Suitable only for a sales meeting at the Holiday Inn Express or a base line Bar Mitzvah at the Veteran's Hall. The chef must have come from a Mine Sweeper, a Minimum Security Prison or an Assisted Living Facility as the food was your basic industrial fare. The staff, in all fairness was friendly, and helpful. Although, if we'd complained we'd still be there. If it's a choice between The Irish Inn at Glen Echo or frozen Ledo's Pizza from last week? I vote you break out the hair dryer and start defrosting. read more

We celebrated my friend's landmark birthday here last night after work. Aside from the bees on the patio, the casual, laid-back atmosphere is pretty alluring. This place can be a bit pricey with no happy hour specials. $9 for a chardonnay and $6.50 for a Boddingtons or Smithwick draft. The pub fare is good grub. The calamari rings are saved by the light and crisp batter and the tasty chili remoulade sauce that accompanies it. My favorite dish is their Mediterranean platter. For $14 you get fried pita chips accompanied by three dips: hummus, feta spread and a really good black olive tapenade. My fellow diners also shared plates of hamburgers and fried ham and cheese sandwiches. No complaints all round. Even though prices are high, the Irish Inn deserves praise for the authentic atmosphere of their pub... just like in Ireland since they banned smoking in pubs there. Free valet parking is nice, except when your whole party leaves at once and the valet gets a bit overwhelmed. read more

Posting on behalf of a family member: I have dined at the Irish Inn for many years and was pleased to see that they had finally put a vegan burger (the Beyond Burger) on the menu. I had ordered it at the Inn before and it was delicious; the server told us that it was quite popular with diners. The other day, however, my friend and I ordered the Beyond Burger again, but they served us two cheeseburgers instead. I thought something was off about halfway though and asked the server if it were a real burger, and he said yes --they didn't have the Beyond Burgers that day. I was quite upset as I have been a vegetarian for over fifteen years and have never had a cheeseburger in that time. More frustratingly, the server seemed puzzled as to why serving meat to a vegetarian should make a difference. Fortunately, I have no allergies -- but if you have an allergy make sure that you ask the server to repeat your order and double check when the food arrives. This place is just okay. I have come here several times for business lunches. I am not a big fan of Irish or pub food much but I guess it is adequate. The prices are for upscale pub food but the quality and presentation usually doesn't match. I ordered the grilled cheese w/ leek potato soup and the sausage rolls. If you have to come here, these items are pretty good considering the other options. I have seen the rest of the food that my party has ordered and it looks pretty lackluster at best...for example, I would definitely not order the burger here. Cozy up to the pub area and head to the bar...get a cup of coffee, splash that on your face and then ask for a bloody mary with the peppar vodka. If you're not awake yet...then you're not ready to live. The Irish breakfast is a staple of irish working person's breakfast. It was everything that you needed to get started with your day. Eggs, bangers, Irish bacon, blood pudding, toast, tomato and beans. When God rested on the 7th day I believe he had an Irish breakfast. The bangers, bacon and puddings are from ireland so the flavors are all there. This is how you want to wake up. Ask for the scones with fresh whipped cream. The benedict here is a treat. The perfectly poached eggs and baby ham is succulent, but instead of the hollandaise sauce the parsley sauce makes it light and and vibrant. it's adds such a great creaminess to the eggs. You've got to try this. The bloody mary here really is good. They make their own batch fresh every Sunday and really, I mean really is fantastic. Describing it would be feat of magic in of itself....you've just got to try it, fall in love with it and wish that you could just have this every morning before you go to work, at work, during mid-morning break and even have it so you don't get that 2:30 feeling. Apart from Brinner (Breakfast for dinner)...Brunch has to be the perfect meal, now when you add the touch of the Irish (because any other touching is probably illegal and will land you in jail) you know that you're going to have a great meal, but when you have it here it's as close to kissing a leprechaun in the emerald isles as you can get. Quite a pleasant early evening until the second we finished our last mouthful when an older gentleman came directly to our table and told us we had to leave because our seats were the most desirable. There are not a ton of restaurants around this area, so this is a fun addition. Located right next to Glen Echo Park, there is a lot of parking, but also valet available. I've only visited once on a Saturday night for dinner and to catch some of the Olympics, but I enjoyed the cozy vibe and friendly atmosphere created by the waiter and other employees. I tried a bit of the lamb, which was delicious. The prices are not inexpensive, but also not bad for the restaurant's proximity to DC. The drink special for the evening was a pina colada, which was amazing! So I'll definitely be returning here to see more of the inn and try other Irish eats and treats! read more

We stopped iat the Irish Inn for dinner because it looked like an interesting old place that was worth investigating. The person who seated us led us upstairs to a table where the table and one of the two chairs were at a significant tilt. It was pronounced enough that I wondered if I'd have a problem with my food or drink sliding sideways. Since the person had taken us here and left immediately, not waiting to see if we were okay with the tilting table, I flagged down a server and asked if we could get a more level table. The server said, "Sure, no problem, but you know...this ~is~ an old house" and took us into the next room and got us something more level. Then, she set a couple of water glasses down. My dining partner started to drink from his water glass and noticed not one, but ~two~ dead bugs floating in his glass. The server noticed him looking at the glass: "Oh, is there something in there?" And offered to get him a replacement. On the way up the stairs, I'd noticed how worn and dirty the carpeting upstairs was. (I was starting to wonder how clean the kitchen was.) The menu here is on the more expensive side for a pub-restaurant. Certainly, it had not made a good impression on me so far. It hardly seemed to be worth it. A quick look at the wine list showed a pitiful selection of inferior wines by the glass. I was here yesterday with a friend and let me tell you this food is to die for. I wanted to take pics but didn't want to be that tacky person in a nice restaurant doing something, so I didn't. This is the perfect spot, right on the water. It has ample parking (just make sure your e break is on lol). There are two sections, the bar area and the dining area, which also has a covered/heated patio. It's such a nice little intimate setting and the staff is phenomenal. My friend and I had the seafood bisque (in a red sauce) that was extremely fresh and literally amazing. It was the perfect amount of heartiness, and not too much so that we were too full. We then split the lam stroganoff (which I wasn't sold on) but omg was it to die for. I never though I'd be on here raving about stroganoff, but here I am. The lamb is so tender, the noodles are in-house made, and the flavor of the dish is just unmatched. I can't explain how this little restaurant makes the flavor of lamb stroganoff complex yet delicate- you just have to visit for yourself. 10/10 recommend it as a must if you're in the DMV. read more

We came for the brunch on Easter Sunday. I ordered the Baileys Irish cream French toast - which was extremely disappointing. It came out as just 4 plain slices of French toast that were similar to IHOP. No toppings, no butter, no cream, or anything that I was expecting. I asked the server for some of the strawberry jam that was supposed to come with it which made it slightly better but absolutely not worth $16. My girlfriend ordered the salmon bagel which she seemed to enjoy. Overall average experience for a brunch... The shepherd's pie came out in a cast iron crock as if it were intended to be baked, yet the mashed potatoes on top were white as snow and appeared to have been squeezed out of a tube. They were the consistency of instant potatoes - pureed to death, with no flavor other than overpowering butter. The ground beef tasted like Hamburger Helper. The shortribs with macaroni and cheese was better, but for the $30 price tag, you would expect gourmet - not mediocrity. Not worth it! I'll have to come back sometime and review the food. I went here with my boss and her husband who are regulars after work for some socializing. The place itself is VERY nice inside and out. We sat out on the deck, which was very well-kept and had cover overhead with ceiling fans. The location is convenient for folks who need somewhere that makes it easy to get back to Bethesda, D.C. or NoVa. The service left something to be desired. My boss waited probably 20 minutes or more on a refill for her Diet Coke. The server said that they had to change out the CO2 on the fountain machine, then came back later without a refill and said only one employee could do it and that he was on the phone. Here's an idea -- either train more than one employee to do such things, or get that guy off the phone! I want to go back here sometime when I'm eating and not just getting something to drink because it does seem like a pretty neat venue. WARNING: DO NOT bring large vehicles like trucks or tour buses into the parking lot! A tour bus turned in, and it is a VERY steep incline into the lot. We've been looking forward to visiting this place for a while--tables are ample outside and distanced, and the location can't be beat. Unfortunately, this isn't the place for us. My wife ordered the half chicken and I ordered the bangers plate. The half chicken was tough and seemed like it had been reheated from an earlier cook in the day (skin was slimy and wet). The bangers themselves tasted good but were cold upon arrival and the accompanying cabbage tasted just as if it had been boiled but no seasonings added. All in all the plate was just incredibly white and bland. Service was "OK." Been wanting to try this place for years and finally did. Pretty disappointing. The interior is homey but dated and a bit musty smelling. The food was no better. The hamburger was fair, the bun was supermarket quality and I can't stand frozen (battered) French fries. The Caesar salad was ok; the gazpacho sucked (literally tasted like tomato sauce); the mussels were plentiful but nothing to write home about; my wife said her corned beef and cabbage was "fine" but nothing memorable and my 85 year old mother who isn't picky said the crab cake was "ok." We used to visit this location frequently since the early 1970's when it was a dive. I often brought friends and family here with pride especially if they were from out of town for a lunch break after Glen Echo or Great Falls. Probably about 2000 it started being just an typical faux Irish pub and prices increased while food quality increasingly did not justify the price but it still was convenient. Lately though I avoid and if friends suggest I just groan and suggest we go elsewhere. Honestly if I'm going to pay $20-35 for a entrée I expect better. For example their corned beef is the low quality where you can see the air holes where it's been pumped with water. Pretty much any corned beef you find at a grocery is likely higher quality. Try some of the restaurants at MacArthur at Seven Locks or Arizona Ave., much better food. read more

Absolutely perfect experience. We had two hungry toddlers on our way in after a terrible show at Glen echo. I had called ahead several times to confirm our large party of six with two kids. Everything was ready when we got there including the two pizzas I had preordered and a private enclave with crayons and drawing mats. The food was delicious and the service was excellent. Wow, this was such a let-down. Last weekend my wife and I stopped by for lunch, early in the afternoon. We got a seat on the porch so we could enjoy the nice weather. The service was terrible. Though the restaurant was nearly empty it took an inordinate amount of time to get to even place our orders. It then took nearly 45 minutes for our lunch to finally arrive- a simple burger for me, a salad for my wife. I asked for some extra ketchup from three staff, yet it never arrived. My burger was well done though I asked for medium. The bun was stale, and the fries were cold. When I complained to a waiter he smiled, nodded, and walked away. We waited about 15 minutes after we finished eating to get the check. I finally had to ask a waiter for the check. Nothing. No one even asked if we wanted anything else. I asked another waitress if she could get us our check. Nothing. Finally our waitress arrived and I asked her for the check- again, nothing. About 15 minutes later I noticed our waitress was walking down the street, smoking a cigarette, with her purse on her shoulder. I guess her shift was over and she left. What??? So I walked into the restaurant and asked an older man if I could get my check. I explained the situation so he turned to a waiter and said "Get this man his check." So we waited another ten minutes. The check finally arrives. We wait yet another ten minutes until I can finally flag down another waitress to pick up our check to process it. What a complete and utter let-down. OK, I get it. You really don't want our patronage. Don't worry- we'll never return. read more

We had a great time at Glenn Echo Irish Inn. The manager, Frank, stopped by our table a few times: once to talk about being carded at age 33 and again to give us the name of a cheese on the cheese platter. We have been a few times to watch sports in the bar and sit out on the porch (they have heat lamps). Each time the servers are amazing, the ambiance is perfect and the food is tasty and fresh. Hands down the worst service I have ever had at a restaurant (would give negative stars if I could) My friend and I were seated by a nice enough blonde hostess and then everything went downhill from there...3....yes THREE other groups who were seated after us got their orders taken and were served their drinks...we had to chase down the waitress (an older lady with brownish red hair)...when the waitress finally took our order, she barely looked at us and then left mid-order after getting our drink orders to help another table...we had to then track her down again to get an an appetizer order in. To top it off, when I asked about the happy hour she asked me "what time is it?" To which I responded and she said, "oh ok you can still do the happy hour".. all with a super sour expression...the delay in us being served was even noted by the next table over when the family commented "oh, that's weird...you guys came first and we already got our drinks." Another waiter, an older bald man, was not much better...when I asked where the bathroom was, he also avoided looking at me, gave me a gruff response, and answered as if I was bothering him. When we got our bill, we were charged FULL price...for pretty good crab dip and superbad drinks (my pomegranate cocktail tasted like cherry cough syrup and my friend's gin and tonic completely flat)...it wasn't until I asked the waitress why that she gave us a discount...if I hadn't said anything, well...full price for awful service and drinks..what a way to start a Friday night...the hostess was fine and the people bussing the tables were fine...but what is up with the wait staff?? I had been to the Irish Inn a few years ago and had a great experience then...I was excited to bring a friend here who was visiting the US from Portugal for the first time...only to have our night start off on a really crappy note by waiters who made us feel like we were not wanted. I mean, the food was pretty good, but it wasn't good enough to justify the cost. Go somewhere else unless you've already shelled out $3.7 million for your house in Glen Echo. The cherry on top was that we were charged an extra $3 for a small plate of bread, and I was billed $2 more for my entree than it was listed at on the menu! They have a nice selection of Irish and Scotch whiskies and a small selection of beers. However, no self-respecting Irishman would pay $7 for a pint of Guinness. The meal was decent, but way way way overpriced. I expect to be nourished at lunch without having my financial and philosophical ethics compromised. Stopped by here for dinner with some friends, before a concert event next door at the Spanish Ballroom in Glen Echo Park. The decor is comfy and reminds me of a classic pub. Dark woods and cozy tables. The food is pretty good. Nothing really outstanding. I had the leek soup and banger's and mash. The black and tan was a flowing steadily all dinner so I was pretty happy. I finished off the dinner with a pineapple parfait which was pretty good. Overall a good dining experience. read more
