This was my first meal in NOLA and it did not disappoint. I got the 2 meat combo with the ribs and the brisket. I really enjoyed the ribs! The meat was so tender and juicy. The brisket was also good but it's not as flavorful as the ribs. I had to use all the sauce they provided but on the bright side, the sauce was good :-) But honestly I would just pass on the ribs and get the brisket. My only complaint was the sauce. Their ribs are served sans sauce and the patron adds their own to their own to taste from the bottles on the table. I prefer a mild and sweet sauce and the choices on the table were neither, but still thoroughly acceptable. My dining companion had a full rack of ribs and his only complaint was that the ribs came sans sauce. He is of the opinion that ribs should always be cooked with sauce on them, but he's always picky no matter where he eats, lol. One orders and pays at the register and the person made a mistake on my order. When the server brought my food and I pointed out it was not what I ordered the mistake was corrected promptly and without question. Value for price paid? Excellent. Service? Very good. We are new to the area. For 2 weeks, we've been eating at all of the tourist places, the classics and it was great. Tonight, we decided to try something new, The Joint, in Bywater, a really chill part of The Big Easy. I got a pulled pork sandwich and coleslaw and my fiancé, the amazing catch that she is, got a full rack of ribs and potato salad. Even with my help, we had to take half a rack back because they're massive. Judging by the homey and inviting interior decor, super-nice staff and good smells from the kitchen, we were confident we'd get a good meal. A testament to just how good this place is, they still managed to blindside us with truly elite-tier fair. Firstly, the meat is quality and smoked to perfection. Not fatty, but juicy and flavorful. Firm with just enough smoke that everything is in balance. The ribs are loaded with quality meat and the pulled pork was savage. Secondly, the portions are huge and not just huge for the sake of it--huge and f'n awesome. In fact, the ribs were the biggest and healthiest I've ever seen. Epic.. Thirdly, even the side dishes are made with care. The coleslaw--even knocked my socks off. And we're talking coleslaw here. Unlike the usual, mayonnaise with shredded stuff, it was actually crispy, fresh and vinegary. Again, perfect balance and made with care. Made with *real care.* As if you're at your family cookout, or a friend is trying to impress you. This is a rare feeling in 2021. You feel appreciated as much as you appreciate The Joint. My fiancé, a young salad wedge of an individual, straight up crushed her potato salad in addition to a mass of meat I've never seen her consume (gonna pay for this sentence if my fantastic friends ever see this). This is a great little bbq place off the beaten path. I've worked in a bbq location before and have tried most of the meats they cooked and was very excited to try this location based on its reviews. As usual my wife and I wanted to try out as much as we could so we both ordered something different and shared it all. I want with the sausage and chicken and she pulled pork and burnt ends. She originally wanted brisket but they were out of that which was fine. The sausage was very delicious and thoroughly packed into its casing making it very dense. The chicken was nicely charred on the outside but amazingly juicy on the sundae and paired well with their house bbq sauce. They have two types of sauces on the table one is a vinegar style sauce, which was very vinegary, and not my style. The other was a more robust sauce that had lots of flavor, this was my go to sauce. The Mac and cheese was also very dense and nicely flavored. My wife is a massive fan of pulled pork and this pork was very good. It was juicy, tasty, and shredded nicely leaving it easy to pick up with a fork and do in the sauces. Now I've had burnt ends before but never as big as these ones were. These were large dense pieces of meat with a mildly sweet elastic to them that required cutting before you could put them into your mouth. Imagine a jaw breaker made of meat and you get the idea of the pieces. The coleslaw had a great flavor and wasn't overpoweringly vinegary which was very nice. It was also a nice solid consistency rather than being a diced up mush like some slaw can be. Personally the weirdest part was leaving my tray at the table. I'm use to taking my bbq try's to be dumped in the trash but here you just leave it in the table. The food was great! And there's a very nice dog park out front where people were playing with their animals, who I imagined were really enjoying the smells from the restaurant. Yep, this "Joint" is all it's cracked up to be! Get there early! The line moves fast and seating is at a premium. People are thoughtful enough to share their tables. The portions are a good size so if you leave hungry it's your own fault. As busy as they are the servers are still quite welcoming and friendly. The Joint is still the best BBQ I've had. I'm limited in my grilling expertise, but this place made me love meat and I don't eat it often. We found it on Yelp before our New Orleans trip, and were surprised that it was quite a drive away from the hub of the city. The line was still out the door, though. You have to place your order before you sit, which frustrated me. A server asked me to get up because I was sitting down while my girlfriend ordered for us. I understand it's because its busy, but this isn't a spot you could navigate with a wheelchair or wait for friends to eat with you. It's still 5 stars on taste alone. Their BBQ chicken is seasoned to perfection. It is moist, it is tender, it is why I will no longer say "BBQ isn't really my thing." It doesn't even need sauce. The sauce on every table is a runny, slightly sweet, slightly smoky BBQ sauce that I poured onto my food with delight. Layers of amazing flavor made the potato salad and bread with my meal non-existent. Their mac and cheese is AMAZING. The other sides I could do without. Where I come from BBQ is its own religion. In no way should all bbq be treated equal because it is possible to make bad BBQ. Though I come from whole hog country, I love Texas beef bbq as well. House made sausages are also something I love. Ribs? I think more people screw up ribs than do them well. Having said that I had a friend that worked at the Joint a while back. I trust his palate. Then right before we came to NOLA we saw the DDD the Joint was on. We decided this would be our one food network place for this vacation. We ordered the 3 meat platter and the 1/2 of ribs to split. Burnt ends, pork, and sausage plate. My favorite was the sausage by far. The burnt ends were drowned in a sauce/gravy? Super fatty. The burnt ends at my two favorite Texas places are lean, smokey, and you add the sauce if you want it. The pork was cooked properly. I could have used a little more seasoning as the sauces weren't my favorite. I come from the sliver of the BBQ world that uses a mustard base. To be super niche it is a mustard vinegar base in my home city. Enjoyed the Joint's vinegar more than the red, but the house made hot sauce was AMAZING. "Oh yeah oh yeah oh yeah" Anytime you hear that coming from a neighboring table, you know one of three things. The food is incredible good, the people at the table are extremely irritating, or there is something going on under the table. On this particular night, I think it may have been a combination of all three. The Joint is my favorite BBQ restaurant in the city. It is the perfect combination of great food, funky ambiance and weird local vibe. The Food This is real BBQ. The brisket, ribs and pulled pork are stellar. The brisket has the perfect amount of bite, smoke and flavor. This is the best brisket I have had other than a few places in Texas. The ribs are equally smokey, but so tender it will melt with flavor in your mouth in a way that only pork can. Speaking of pork, their pulled pork is also wonderful. Add the mustard based vinegar sauce and you have a smokey, spicy batch of awesomeness. Funky Ambiance The joint is a small place. There is seating inside and at the bar, but you're likely to have people's junk all up in your area while they wait in line. If you just sit inside, sit at the tables to the right as you enter or at the bar. I highly recommend outside if the weather is decent. The outside ambiance reminds me of being in someone's backyard minus the dude making love to his brisket. Weird Local Vibe The neighborhood is very unique. Directly across from the entrance is an empty lot with a large tree. Hanging in that tree is a swing and you should not be surprised if you notice some odd person deciding 10:00pm is a great time to swing from a tree yelling yippie. Another odd thing is the sheer number of bicyclists. I counted at least 50 that passed by my truck. I'm all for saving gas, but these folks seem to think the own the road. I'm talking zooming by with no concern for their own safety. Pardon me fine sir, but in the battle of 5000 lb truck vs 80 pound hipster, the truck is going to win. The pulled pork was good, nothing to write home about, and the brisket had some deep smoke rings but was a bit dry and not as melt-in-your-mouth as other reviews described. Maybe it was an off night. Sides-wise the Macaroni and Cheese was good, but felt uninspired. Nothing about it stuck out. The potato salad was my second favorite item, having a variety of onion and spices that made every bite complex and flavorful. It is definitely a local spot, waaaaay off the beaten tourist path with some good food. I tried the wood-smoked 1/4 chicken (dark), mac and cheese with salad. Let's not forget that side of pecan pie...It was very, very good. I will definitely eat at The Joint when in NOLA whenever possible. The place wasn't very crowded so there wasn't a long wait for the food. The staff was very nice - someone came around to clean off the tables and had accidentally tossed a fellow diner's plate while she was gone to fetch her take away trays.
