We had time to go grab a cocktail from the bar prior. Ryan was behind the bar, crafting beverages for folks. My husband chose to have a Sazerac, while I went for an espresso martini. Drinks in hand we headed back to spend time with Forrest, who took us on a brief tour of the facility. He gave us the history of how Stranahan's started. It was interesting to learn that they bottle by hand. We came to our tasting set up. At each couple there were jars with items to smell that would be aromas or tastes we would experience, like rose, leather, tobacco, and cinnamon. There were four tastes paired with caramel, cheese, chocolate and fig. Each pairing brought out different flavors in the whiskey samples. We both had a lovely time and at the end, I had my husband pick a favorite for me to get for him for his birthday. Great experience!

Her enjoyment and love of her work made the tour so much better than any tasting experience I have had. Take some cash to tip your guide at the end! The server was very knowledgeable about all of the drinks and she encouraged us to order different things based on our personal likes even though she was fairly new serving at Union Lodge. Their Old Fashioned is incredible. With only a rinse of simple syrup, the flavors of the whiskey and bitters really come through. Very dry, this is not a sweet drink as found in some bars. The Manhattan is similarly classic. Ice gets special attention here. When not in a rough hewn cube, it is crushed with a wooden mallet in an ice bag. The bartenders are outstanding, amazingly fast considering how complicated it is to make some of the drinks. I like that they speak in loud voices and can be easily heard oven the din.

A few other couples came in and out, grabbing a drink or two it was pretty quiet. The drink was perfectly balanced. Of course the family who requested the change, wasn't even watching the games they asked to put on. No one asked us or even acknowledged until I asked. You needed to order at the counter and they brought your food out to you. After that we were checked on constantly to make sure everything was fine. Drinks were refilled promptly. Right before we finished we were told we had a complimentary ice cream, I chose chocolate and husband got mixed. It was just a tiny cup but after eating the meal that's really all you need. They were both piping hot when they arrived to our table and fried to perfection! Having moved from the Midwest to Colorado, I am always delighted when I find a restaurant with perfectly made cheese curds! Also, their fried pickles are chips not spears (the proper way to make fried pickles) that also delighted me. They have a wall of TVs above the bar. So, we will be back for sporting events.
