We dined at Rooftop 106 at the Mathewson, and were so impressed by the food, drinks and the whole ambiance overall. The rooftop is beautiful and has a great view of the plaza of Healdsburg. We ordered the Hawaiian pizza minus bacon and the Brocollini pizza, as well as the cauliflower appetizer. Everything we ordered was amazing! Love love the Wine Wall. I keep coming back for that. The POS process/flow needs to be improved for folks enjoying the Wine Wall and food together. I haven't dined inside yet, but have hung out on the lovely rooftop -- getting happy hour type items along with the Wine Wall tastes and pours. When you express your intent to do the Wine Wall, they will keep your credit card in exchange for the Wine Wall card that unlocks the size pour you want for each wine and keeps track of the costs so far. It's self-service and you get your pours for whichever location you're sitting at. The first time, we got pours and brought them to the rooftop. We ordered food (delicious fresh hummus plate) and closed that bill out separate from the Wine Wall. We then stopped at the Wine Wall desk on our way out to close those individual bills out and get our credit cards back. Second time I went with someone else. Again, went back to rooftop, got our pours, ordered a charcuterie board, which was fine. It included a Pt Reyes Toma, which was a bit disappointingly pedestrian. Though I love that cheese, it is widely available in grocery stores, wanted something more unusual/hard to find. Also, they served a good, fluffly light chicken liver mousse with very soft pita bread -- weird combo. Would've tasted far better with a crispy toast point or a cheese cracker. Service at the rooftop perfunctory. Halfway through our visit, the Wine Wall cashier came up to ask us if we were sharing the Wine Wall bill. Because we have the same last name and same first name first initial, the POS system apparently consolidated us into 1 user/customer, even though we had *separate* Wine Wall cards. And it consolidated us with the rooftop food orders as well. When we told the cashier, she said no problem, she would split up the Wine Wall costs when we closed our bill out downstairs. When we closed out the rooftop food bill, we had to scrounge for another credit card. We both carry minimal cards, since we use mobile pay much of the time and the 2 physical cards we had were downstairs at the Wine Wall. One of us found an extra card, paid for the food bill (though not with our ideal reward points card). Then we closed the bill out downstairs at the Wine Wall. Now the cashier said, ok, if I just split it equally between you both? That was easier for her, since the system had consolidated all the costs, even though, AGAIN, we had separate Wine Wall purchase cards. What is the point of having separate user cards, if the system arbitrarily combines you anyway??? My friend's WW total was 3x what mine was, so she didn't feel comfortable just splitting it in half. The cashier was nice and trying to resolve the issue. Ultimately, she realized she could swipe the cards on the Wine Wall and see the total for each and use those individual totals to create the custom bill for each. Everything turned out fine. Love the Wine Wall (you can get a taste of the super-expensive Chateau Yquem Sauternes for a fraction of its bottle cost). It's just the system and process are clunky and disjointed. Feels like, they should connect the Wine Wall POS better with the food POS -- so that if you leave a card at the WW, they are able to connect it with the food bill. That way, you are able to use the same CC for both types of costs and potentially not have to close the bill out in 2 different spots. Last, the system should not arbitrarily combine any WW cards, no matter what the names might be on the credit cards. Having said that, I will most likely still return to the Wine Wall again!! The selection and curation are really good! And the rooftop is lovely with the tall leafy trees of the Healdsburg square in front. I'd think the Matheson would want to improve this aspect of their customer service, since it's that higher level of customer offering overall. read more

The room is gorgeous. The location is terrific. The food was very good (very very good, almost-but-not-quite great). The Japanese Milk Rolls were EXTRAORDINARY (great great great). Our server, Yvette, was fabulous. They have a large and wonderful wine list. I love this place and can't wait to come back. BUT... our experience at the front door with the hostesses (every single one of them) was deplorable. I had a confirmed reservation. I had to reintroduce myself THREE TIMES tonight. Three. Times. We were met without a shred of kindness at the front door. Especially when the guy who squeezed in next to us just got off a 5 hour flight and was coughing the latest variant over his shoulder at me. No water, no "would you like another drink", nothing. I've been to the wine wall and Rooftop several times, did the NYE dinner, so I'm not from Kansas (sorry Kansas). We went for happy hour at the bar downstairs. The wine was (unfortunately) rather disappointing (may be just the happy hour selection)...but the pizza was another story and saved the day! On the happy hour menu only is an amazing cheese pizza (we don't eat meat), but the other vegetarian option was insanely amazing! Meh. It's decent. The facade is very "Healdsburg" but the service is lacking at best. My wife and I had dinner at the bar a couple of times and the bartenders were far from welcoming. Dismissive is probably the best word for them. Drinks were decent, nothing to write home about. Food was VERY good. The steelhead was on point, the squid ink porridge with scallops and Calabrian chilis was delicious. My wife enjoyed being able to go and buy small pours of the wine so she could dial in on her full dinner glass(es) and the prices were very reasonable. Also, the Merry Edwards late harvest was a perfect end. Came back when my mom was in town and decided to check out the rooftop, and it was kind of a disaster from start to finish. The entire process felt disjointed. Not going to detail the food at length (which was again, exceptional; burrata, corn, mixed greens, mushroom pizza.) We were told that we could go up top for a table of three, but when we arrived upstairs, we were told that despite them telling us that we had a table downstairs, there actually wasn't one open. Totally fine, we asked to go to the bar while something opened and ordered a drink. We got sat a few minutes later and it took almost fifteen minutes for our server to come and greet us. We were ready to order and gave it to her when she asked. Fast forward twenty more minutes (and two courses of food later) and we haven't seen our server since we ordered. Drinks have been long empty and I ended up going to the bar to get around for our table. We could have stayed at the bar if the server was too busy to take tables. We could have eaten at the bar as we had three seats while we were waiting to get sat. All and all, the food is delicious but the quality of service is lacking hardcore and it's hard to justify the prices despite the quality of the food because of that. read more

We also tried the pork belly pizza which was good, but I wish it had more flavor to it. I love all things rooftop bar and this was a great experience, I haven't stopped thinking of that truffle pizza since I ate there two weeks ago. I wish I lived closer so I could visit more often and try more of their menu offerings! read more

Took my wife for her bday while we stayed in Healdsburg. Highly recommend and will go back! Great service all around...from hostess to waiter to 'wine specialist'. Surprised my wife for our 5 year wedding anniversary here last night. The experience was up and down, but the food and ambiance makes this worth 5 stars. We love Dustin Valette and his restaurants. When checking in, the hosts were a bit cold, we arrived about 10 minutes early and were told that "your table will be ready closer to your reservation time, just go to the bar" in not a very nice way. Once meandering over to the bar we stood there for 10 minutes and no one greeted us or asked if we would like anything to drink. We went to the rooftop and were seated by a fire pit and comfy seats. Once greeted by our waiter, we ordered the Ahi Tuna starter and after about 25 minutes our waiter returned and mentioned that "he just heard they are out of that dish." So we ordered the burrata toast, hummus plate, mushroom truffle pizza and crispy pork belly all to share. Wow! This is where the evening turned around. Although our waiter only came back and pour us more wine from the bottle we had one time, we didn't mind the peace because we were obsessed with the food. Reading this review might have you wondering how this place deserves a 5 star review, and I could see why, there were many flaws in the service, but the ambiance and food was so far above excellent (especially for the extremely reasonable price) that it far outweighs any negative issues we experienced here. We will absolutely be back, and soon! Hopefully Dustin can meet with the staff to get them up to Valette standards, but either way, do NOT miss the incredible food here! read more

This is really a review of the Roof 106 restaurant which is above The Matheson. Have to say this place is hard to figure out. Its big, its showy, and it comes off as a big time restaurant but the place lacks sincerity and heart, and comes off as a gigantic financial venture and not a restaurant filled with passionate foodies who express their love for cooking. If someone were to ask me to describe the place in one word, I'd probably say "corporate" as for some reason this place just seems like a business more than it is anything else. The place is pretty dark and brooding in the main restaurant, and the Roof was quite cold and breezy, but it is winter and that's to be expected. We were disappointed they don't allow pets (even in containers) and the general vibe we got from the staff is they are more interested in trying to be hip than sincere, and there is a distinct lack of warmth coming from the employees. Maybe its a crummy place to work... there is a definite lack of zeal coming from the staff. Even the guy with the wine glass coming to check to see if we were enjoying ourselves (interrupting our conversation... he is probably the owner or manager) seemed like he was checking a box more than he was really happy we were there (if you want to know what I am talking about, eat at Chez Panisse) The service was also bizarre in that we were handed lunch menus, and when we went to order were told nothing we wanted was available, but after getting the dinner menus we were disappointed with the unimaginative cocktail menu and found offerings to be rather limited. We had been wine tasting earlier in the day and just went with soft drinks. The food was pretty good, nothing amazing, but given the prices ($15 salads, $22-25 pizzas, $41 steak) you would be right to have high expectations. We didn't feel ripped off, which is great because you definitely do feel that way at certain restaurants, but we also didn't feel like we got great value for our money, which is the thing that keeps people coming back again and again. The clientele come off as wannabe hipsters or young & rich folks coming up from SF... not really our scene, to be honest, and there was an loud and obnoxious young woman in a table of four behind us complaining about the cost of living in California (why is she eating here??) who desperately wants to move to Vegas. It was everything I could do not to offer to pay for her Uber to the Airport if should leave RIGHT NOW. Overall, this was a completely OK meal. Not bad, not great. My steak was just okay...my wife's pizza was tasty and probably better per dollar spent than my steak. We have wanted to eat there for the last couple of visits to Healdsburg, but I feel like we have just gotten it out of the way rather than discovered a place where we will look forward to returning. read more

I really wanted to love this place. It has the potential to be the best spot in town and one of the best restaurants in Sonoma County. Sad to say that the reality is a grand disappointment. We visited twice -- once up top and once down below -- before I wrote this review. There were so many disappointments during each visit. Rooftop 1. Pizza is nothing special. Dough is average and the flavors were bland. Overall the pizza was also very oily. 2. Menu for wines by the glass is horrendous. I would expect more from this type of establishment. Choices were so bad that I went down 3 flights of stairs to pick out my own wine at the wine bar. That bad. Downstairs fancy dining 1. No one told us so we waited in line out front to check in. Came to find out that was a second interior check in for the downstairs restaurant. 2. We told them we were celebrating a special occasion and they did absolutely nothing special for us. I have been to many high end restaurants and the higher the class, the more they typically do (e.g., personalized card, champagne to start, complimentary dessert, etc.) They did nothing. 3. Ordered a cocktail. Took almost 40 min to arrive. Had to ask about it 3 times. Food came and still no drink. Especially funny since my drink order was an easy Old Fashioned. 4. Ordered halibut and it was insanely overcooked. Literally tasted like sandpaper. Sent it back and second order of halibut was still overcooked but I didn't feel like dealing with a second send back so I ate the dried fish. Yuck. 5. Asked to speak with wine sommelier. Server forgot and Sommelier never came. We had to flag him down. By the time he finally helped us, it was too late to order a bottle of anything. 6. Multiple additional messups during our meal and our server always came across like he was in a rush (or on Meth). We felt neglected and he was Mr. Busy. I never felt comfortable keeping him. He was always running off as I was trying to order something. So strange. 7. Getting our check so that we could leave took forever. Waited about 20 min. 8. No one ever came by to apologize for all of the terrible mistakes. No free drink. Still charged for sandpaper halibut. No special celebration for our anniversary. Nothing was done. We left feeling extremely disappointed. We spent over $300 and nothing that we ate was worth half that much money. I expected a lot because I thought they were trying to raise the bar for dining in Healdsburg. Sad to say the bar had been lowered by this new establishment. We have no desire to return. On December 26th we tried to visit the Matheson's Roof 106. There were 4 of us and a REAL service dog. We were denied entry due to the service dog. The hostess suggested we speak to the manager as she said they let a service dog in earlier "with papers". I told her it wasn't legal to deny us access due to the service dog. She got the manager who told us due to the "open kitchen" no dogs, not even service dogs were allowed. That's illegal. The manager told us, those were their rules, sorry they wouldn't seat us. So, we will never go back (not that they care) but we do want those considering going there that they don't follow state, federal or county rules and deny entry to people with service dogs. I sent this review directly to the restaurant but received no response. The first floor was beautifully designed and I loved the high ceilings and the murals. There were many staff members moving around trying to serve water or making you feel attended. After our waiter brought us menus, it took a long 20 minutes before he came back to get our order. Our food was served in a reasonable amount of time. We loved the pumpkin soup, it was outstanding. The California rolls were good. The Short Ribs were very tasty and the Sole was nicely cooked, but rather bland. The apple galette was unusual with cheddar cheese pastry (good) 2 tablespoons of apple, and sour lemon whipped cream (not good). We asked for our check and upon reviewing it found that both appetizers were overcharged by a few dollars. We pointed this out to the waiter. We asked how this happened and he ignored the question. He never apologized for the problem and seemed annoyed that we pointed this out to him. As we were leaving, this brought to mind that on your website where you reserve on OpenTable the cost of the multi-course dinner was $95. The cost of the dinner on the menu in the restaurant was $125. So we left the restaurant feeling that the restaurant felt untrustworthy, and that we may not want to come back here. There are many lovely restaurants in Healdsburg where the food is great, we feel welcome, our waiter is friendly and on our side, not there to take advantage of us. We know this is a new restaurant and hope that things continue to improve for you. read more

Wow! We had an incredible experience there for my husband's birthday. We loved the wine wall to start. The sommelier was very knowledgeable and helpful. We tasted several 1/2 pours and then headed to our table. We loved the atmosphere and the excellent service. We went with the Chef's tasting. Every dish was excellent and prepared with the attention to detail you would expect in a fine restaurant. On the floor was a second sommelier that visited every table and offered suggestions for each course we ate. I loved that! He was very friendly and knowledgeable. Well, we are super impressed with Dustin Valette's new addition to Healdsburg. We had reservations on the first floor but started out on the roof. While we didn't get any food there, so I can't review that part, the food we saw go by looked amazing and the cocktails were indeed delicious. The view of the square from the roof makes the time there fly by and is just gorgeous. The service was really good too. Now onto dinner. As a preface, I have a lot of dietary restrictions, so I emailed in advance with my list. The response was quick, and thorough and when we were seated the staff reiterated my list back to me to confirm (wow - wish every restaurant would do that...). We did the tasting menu and it was stupid good. The service was great - pretty flawless - and make the experience wonderful. Can't wait to return! read more

We stopped in Monday night and had an amazing experience. The restaurant itself is beautiful. The host at the door was super friendly and helped us get seated downstairs despite not having a reservation as well as helped us get upstairs for drinks after dinner. Our server Elijah was amazing and the food was delicious. The manager, Tosh was very nice and made sure were enjoying ourselves.
