Really cool bar in an area that needs a really cool bar! We stopped here for a drink after a play we saw at 18th and union and the bar is a lot bigger than what it seems from the outside! It reminds you of those speak easys that has a tiny door and the place just opens up as soon as you walk in. There is plenty of seating but the bar was almost full on a Thursday night which is a good sign. I got an old fashioned which was not as stuff as I'd like it to be and Sarah got wine that came in a half pint glass which as you can imagine is a huge pour! We didn't get any food here this time so I'll update my review if I ever eat here. They also have a pool table and the decor is really cool! I'd recommend this place if you're in CD and you want to hang at a nice bar with decent drinks at a decent price read more

I have been a long time customer of both The Neighbor Lady and The Twilight Exit and feel compelled to write an objective review because there is nothing more frustrating to me then when reviewers give a low star rating because of their own inability to pay attention to the rules of the bar or restaurant and fail to conduct their research-due diligence based on their wants-preferences and allow those preferences to form the basis of their review. First and foremost, this local, regular spot has excellent food and the staff is consistent with the rules of their establishment. The Lady and Twiz strive to provide a quality food experience while at the same time keeping their prices well below an overpriced Seattle market. You won't find a more generous pour or stiff drink anywhere else in Seattle at their price point. They also treat their staff well and have always been generous and thoughtful to their long time patrons. They have a great business model which is why they have been successful until now and will continue to be successful for as long as they choose to run their businesses. In order to keep prices lower than normal, compensate their staff well, and serve quality food -stiff drinks, they are not a full service restaurant. If you are seated at a table, you WILL need to order from the bar. And when your food is ready, they will deliver it to your table, but don't' expect a 5-star dining service because the bartender is not only taking care of a your needs but every single person in the bar! At best, there will only be two staff persons working. If you don't want to walk the 10 or so steps to the front of the line like everyone else, and prefer to be served, then have a seat at the bar and wait until they come to you. But if the line is busy, expect to wait longer for them to take your order, because the line always comes first. And by all means, if this is just all too much for you, then don't come here! Service industry people put up with so much that you are not aware of, and the bartender job is considered one of the most stressful jobs according to many statistics I've read. Also, know your preferences. If you want the full meal deal, then go to a place where you will be waited on hand and foot, pay $12 for a weak cocktail or a drop of a shot, get small portions of oftentimes mediocre food and and be presented with an overpriced check at the end of it all. Until just recently this establishment was considered a no frills dive bar that catered to the locals in the CD, you know ... that neighborhood that none of y'all would ever step foot in and/or looked down upon those of us who have considered the CD our home long before you decided to devour our neighborhood with little thought, consideration or sensitivity to the impact your self-absorbed, 'everything revolves around me' attitude would have. Seattle has long been known for having standoff-ish, passive-aggressive behaviors. That is why the reference to 'The Seattle Freeze ' has a Wikipedia page and is a well-know term all over the country. Those of us who chose to move here many years ago before it became a greedy little money magnet, the square pegs who left where they were so that they did nor have to be around or have to try to fit in with you new transplants, took comfort in being surrounded by likeminded freaks, geeks, nerds, punks, weirdos, queers, LGBTQI...and understood that getting beyond the crusty freeze-y locals was a badge of honor. Trust me, if you act like a halfway decent human being, have some manners, a little patience, tolerance and recognition for how hard it is to do their job, you will meet some of the coolest, decent, we got your back bar staff in the City. If you have a gripe about the food, fine *and* know that everyone has an off night. If you need someone to coddle you, know that, read the reviews on the place you are going to, so that your expectations align as closely with what is important to you in a dining - drinking experience. And remember, the establishment sets the rules of the house, has the right to refuse service to anyone outside persons protected by discrimination laws and should not be held responsible for your inability to pay attention and/or ignore the clearly posted instructions on how to be served. read more

Neighbor Lady in the Central Dist may pour strong and play hard pool-side, but she also has a softer, feminine side with Parisian-style wall paper and cozy booths. This is the place for deep fried and greasy to chat up fresh rocket greens and vegetarian blt's. I stopped in to The Neighbor Lady with a couple of friends on what I believe was their first night open to the public. On second thought, it might not actually have been open to the public, as I later noticed a small handwritten sign taped to a wall that said "private party" but in any case, we were kindly welcomed. I've lived a few blocks from this location for many years. Thompson's Point Of View, while host to some good misadventures, did not feature noteworthy food, and in later years became a magnet for vagrants, shysters, pushers, and other ne'er-do-wells. Certainly, a nice, warm, neighbor lady will fix those problems. The entry to the building has been moved, removing the prison-like bars which secured the former entrance. The walls feature darkly-stained wainscoting and retro fleur-de-lis wallpaper. Comfortable wood booths surround a nice pool table and a wraparound bar. The bar, and in general the entire layout of the building, follows the pattern of the original (and now the current) Twilight Exit, which is owned by the same people. The booze is stored above the bar in a metal structure which provides visibility into what's available. There are two cocktail-style arcade games, including Qbert, a couple of pinball machines, and a couple of standup arcade games, including Mortal Kombat II and Ms Pac Man. There's a jukebox, and a stately ladies' leg lamp in the corner. The same style lamp you'll remember from A Christmas Carol. We weren't drinking this night, so we stuck to food and soft drinks. I had the muffaletta sandwich which came on tasty foccacia and had a good olive tapenade. I had the crosscut fries, which score points for being fresh-cut. The fries initially arrived underdone, and after returning them, they came back still a bit underdone. I'll chalk that up to first night kinks. The meats were A+ however there was so much of one of the salamis that it was a little too dense. In any case, tasty plate for about $10. My friends ordered a rocket salad, a chicken breast entree, and some ravioli. I never asked how it was, but it disappeared quickly, so must have been good enough. The clientele was exactly what you'd expect if you've been to any of the previous incarnations of the Twilight Exit: a Puch moped parked out front, lots of beards, tattoos, and jovial and friendly folks. With a warm, inviting atmosphere and lots of fun things to do inside, I'm so glad The Neighbor Lady has moved to our neighborhood. I kinda want to come over with a plate of cookies for her, to welcome her to the hood. read more

Glad to see that the Union / 23rd corner is getting some life again. I wish I could give a higher rating, but the three times I've come, I've had pretty unacceptable food. They've got a nice menu which makes a lot of exciting promises, but the fact is the food I've ordered (and between my wife and I over three visits, we've tried about 80% of the food) is largely bland and under-flavored. Also, with each visit, none of the food has actually gotten to my table hot (or even warm). If they can get the kitchen humming (which seems realistic: these are the same people who run the Twilight Exit and that place has dependably good food) I'll go to four stars. read more

I really wish I had it in me to write a review lampooning the gentrification of this venerable Seattle neighborhood, but as this isn't my Sophomore year in college, and I am writing a review of a bar, you won't hear the words "White Privilege" or "Displacement" or "Socioeconomic shifts." I can tell you that they have clean taps, fresh kegs, a good selection of ale, fast, friendly service and lots of places to sit for groups both large and small. We had found out about this place via a listing of places showing the first presidential debate and thought it'd be cool to check out. This place was definitely meant to be a neighborhood pub, lots of wood in the decor. Seating in booths, tables and long bars to suit any kind of seating preference you have. Probably no high chairs though. And! My new thing, I love that this place has coat hooks under the bar to hang up my coat and purse. As for the food, I got the Madam which was a hot salami and brie sandwich with house salad, my boyfriend got some kind of hot pastrami sandwich with sweet potato fries. Fabulous sandwiches, substantial house salad with beet greens and kale mixed in with fresh baby lettuce. Sweet potato fries were the best we've had, they tasted to be made fresh from whole sweet potatoes, and fried in such a way that the inside was hot and steamy and the outside was crunchy and salty. This place was super busy and we sat at the bar, watched the elections and also watched how the staff handled the crowd. You have to order your drinks and food at the bar, and there was often a line. But the staff was very efficient and the line moved fast. There were lots of really nice little touches that makes me think that the owner really put a lot of effort into making this place welcoming. The wallpaper was fancier, but really all the things that this place offered were the same. Wait, I take that back. There were more vegetarian food options for the appetizers. I really want to like the Neighbor Lady. It's near my house, and a seemingly great alternative to Twilight (which I love). It's got a laid-back atmosphere, cool decor, and a well-rounded menu. Which is why my boyfriend and I chose it for dinner last night, planning to be in and out in 45 minutes or so. Instead, our food took over an hour to get to our table (a kale salad and pulled pork sandwich should NOT take this long, and the place wasn't slammed either). Once it was ready, we saw it sitting on the counter outside the kitchen for upwards of 15 minutes before it was brought to our table. Lukewarm fries anyone? The Neighbor Lady has everything you ever wanted in your local watering hole--good food, affordable drinks, and a chill, unpretentious atmosphere. Heck, my friends and I who live on Capitol Hill actually drive here for food and drinks every few weeks because we enjoy this place so much. The food is way above average for bar food. Miso-glazed salmon? Chicken in a cumin-heavy lentil curry? Sandwiches whose fillings always breach the perimeters of the bread? Count me in, especially since you'll probably never drop more than $12 on your meal. Their tap selection rotates every now and then, and features some of the usual PNW culprits (think Black Raven, Double Mountain, Anthem, etc.). There's also usually a drink special every night that's a fairly good deal. This is a great bar for hanging out and catching up with friends over a meal and a couple of drinks. I think this is a fantastic neighborhood bar. However, I have realized it is the kind of bar you can only order beer at. My boyfriend and I went it tonight for drinks, and ordered two whiskey ginger cocktails. I watched the female bartender pour only a non alcoholic ginger-beer into glasses. I asked her if there was whiskey in the drinks and she assured me there was. However, after tasting, there was clearly no alcohol in our drinks. We sent them back and she told us they were fine. I would love to give this bar a four star based on the ambiance, but the bartender's attitude and the subpar service was off-putting. read more

Suffers from the typical Seattle afflictions: too well lit, Seattle "freeze" and a lack of investment... If you want a cool place to hang with your mates this place works. I love the fact that they have a selection of bottled and on-tap ciders. It was fun to try the Ace (bottled, sweet, good strong apple flavor) and Anthem (on tap, very light and dry, light apple/floral taste). The arugula salad is huge! The creamy dressing and fresh cheese cut the bitterness of arugula, and the pine nuts sprinkled on it add a new dimension of flavor that I hadn't experienced before. And the jalapeno poppers are made right - crisp with some breadcrumbs in the batter, and cream cheese inside, without any unfortunate pickled flavor that some of the previously frozen ones have...not that I know if the Neighbor Lady makes theirs fresh or busy them frozen, honestly. Atmosphere is very self-referential and hip, with the crowd being about right - I saw dudes in giant scarves, flannel button downs, and saggy tight pants everywhere. Not the type I would try to pick up, but I was already there with a male friend. It's dark but in a flattering way, and the tables are well-spaced so you don't feel like you're up in your neighbor's business. I also love that the bartender had a great Irish accent and they serve Tullamore Dew...I will be back :) read more

Classic neighborhood-casual bar atmosphere that isn't classy nor a dive, it's just comforting. My friend and I both had the mac n cheese with chicken and a beer each. The portion of mac n cheese seemed small, but overall with the salad was appropriately sized. I lozed my beer! The Trickster IPA on tap is pretty good. My friend had the grapefruit beer and loved it, too. Their monitors/cash registers stopped working and we could tell they were doing everything they could to make us happy. They did well. Let me start by saying the food was delicious! But the service is literally non existent. You have to go to the bar to order all food and drinks, they drop the food at your table but that's it for service. We had to ask another table if they were done with their condiments and they were kind enough to share. Also had to scrounge at the bar for extra napkins. I went to the bar which was only occupied by a few other people, to order drinks for our table, the bartender was waiting on one person standing at the bar, after 5 minutes he looked at me and told me l "will have better luck getting a drink if I stand in line" there was now a line forming behind the one other patron at this time. After 15 minutes of waiting, we finally got a round of drinks. Definitely won't be back. read more

Twilight Exit's ugly step sister. I'm a huge fan of Twilight Exit who shares the same owner as the Neighbor Lady. The Neighbor Lady provides a very similar experience, but with better seating options. I've seen the same bartenders at both locations, same drink prices, and most importantly the same stiff drinks! Where the Neighbor Lady fails me is the food. The menu is significantly smaller than Twilight Exit, and the same level of quality doesn't exist. I find myself going to Twilight Exit even though the Neighbor Lady is significantly closer. That being said the Neighbor Lady still is a high-quality dive bar that blows away most that are located on the hill. read more

Everything about my experience dining here was perfectly adequate, but nothing to rave about. The decor is more polished than that at the Twilight, but kind of dull somehow. I do like the booths though. Booths are good. The menu seems a little overpriced, and it isn't super extensive. I like that they have vegetarian offerings but it annoys me when establishments offer primarily fake meat-oriented options and pat themselves on the back for it. I sampled the vegetarian poutine and the muffaletta sandwich, with meat. Both were pretty greasy. The fries are tasty though, but could have used more toppings. I like my poutine drowned in goodness, or at least liberally covered. I'll probably come back, but mostly because I live close by. The deep fried asparagus is also intriguing. read more

I stopped in because I live a few blocks away and read a brief note from The Stranger that this place had sorta maybe just opened. All told, I could see this place becoming a serious hang out for the CD. It has a pool table, an interesting crowd, reasonably priced drinks. The folks behind the bar are the same nice folks that you run into at the Twilight Exit. The food left me a bit unsatisfied. It was a bit spendy for what you got but frankly I don't really see this as the kind of place where food is gonna be a big deal. It's about the feel and about the drinks. read more

The Neighbor Lady is exactly what we were looking for! Conveniently located just next door to Uncle Ike's, my friend and I came here for lunch today and was a super casual sit down eatery/bar. The ambiance was quirky and cozy and there was a mini arcade area with a pinball machine in addition to some board games stacked for patrons to chose from. You had to order lunch from the bar which was easy & convenient. Staff was super nice and friendly. I ordered the Chicken Club Avocado sandwich which was absolutely delicious! There were many different sides to choose from--I went with seasonable veggies which were kale and parsnips--scrumptious. Happy hour specials were unbeatable ($2.50 for Rainer beer) and my friend and I each indulged in a beer to wash down our delicious meal. We left with a bill of only $26! For a quick and delicious meal--the neighbor lady is highly recommended for lunch if you're in the area! read more
