Cheddar bagel with Bacon, Egg & American Sandwich
    Bryan B.

My father is a New Yorker and I've always cherished times in the city with him and my late grandparents. Some of my earliest memories are of a slice of pie, sprinkled with extra parmesan and taking in a real ball game (full transparency, I'm a Yankees fan. Sorry, Tigers peeps). Of course, NYC is famous for many other delicacies, but chief among them are their bagels. New Yorkers take their bagels seriously- whether from a brick & mortar storefront or a tiny cart on the street, they better be fresh, doughy on the inside, and slightly crips on the outside. Often served with a cup of joe in the famous Greek themed "We are happy to serve you" cup, bagels can be eaten plain, buttered, schmeared with cream cheese, stuffed with egg, sausage, or bacon, or topped with lox, red onion, and capers. But where does one go in the greater Lansing area for authentic bagels? And can I even get a cup of coffee downtown anymore? These are real life questions I faced recently as I 1) had to do this month's review and 2) had to serve jury duty. The latter query came about last Monday as my jury pool was finally given reprieve for lunch and set loose on downtown Lansing. I never though the day would come when downtown Mason's courthouse would have more walkable coffee options than Ingham County Court on Kalamazoo St. Enter the lifesaver that is New Daily Bagel and their assortments of bagels, customized cream cheeses, sandwiches- hot & cold, and yes, coffee. After walking several blocks trying to cure my caffeine headache, I stumbled upon this shop and was greeted ever so graciously by Basil and assured that they had coffee. His soccer jersey let me know he was a fan of the beautiful game, but I enlightened him that he should root for Chelsea FC (Club World Cup Champs 2025). On my return visits, I was helped by Joseph, who was knowledgeable about the menu and kind. Michael Mahdi, who has run the business since 1987 has clearly created a family atmosphere with his staff and even still makes sandwiches himself today. What Was Necessary I'm a two cups a day kind of coffee drinker. So, when the judge finally let our jury pool out for lunch well after noon, I went full-on Indiana Jones searching for an antidote to my hankering. The iced latte with oat milk and caramel was perfectly timed for a summer afternoon and several blocks back to my return destination. At first, I was let down with only a small 12-ounce cup as the only option, but the coffee was deep and punchy. The caramel was sweet enough to not require additional sweeteners, and the oat milk proved just creamy enough to make for a lush treat. What's Really Good The bagels... honestly. I ordered several variations to get a wider perspective on what the New Daily has to offer. First, the Cinnamon Crunch Bagel ($1.89 plain) with apple cinnamon cream cheese ($4.29 including bagel) was very enjoyable. Sweet, but not overpowering with the added bliss of the crunchy topping, this bagel is pleasing. The same can be said for the Nova Lox on Garlic Bagel ($11.99). Creamy cheese combined with scallions join slices of cold-smoked salmon, red onion, and capers. The New Daily Bagel also serves it with the devil's fruit (raw tomatoes), but I politely set that aside. The garlic bagel offered a nuanced flavor profile, and the lox were slightly sweet, which was perfect with the crunch from the onion and capers. I'm a big fan of breakfast sandwiches. On most weekends, I can be found constructing them in my own kitchen. The Daily Bagel offers choice of meat on their breakfast sammies. I opted for the Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on a Cheddar Bagel ($4.19). This handheld was stuffed with fried eggs, bacon, and cheddar cheese. The bagel's own cheddar had a nice pungency to it that elevated the sandwich overall. It was nearly, better than my own because I opted for the veggie light cream cheese that brought fresh, earthy flavors to the mix. Best Bite The onion roll that accompanies The Journal ($9.35) specialty sandwich is incredible. The Journal is packed with seasoned corned beef and mustard, but the combo of mozzarella and cheddar cheese are the star. The melty mix pulls apart like pizza in a tv commercial and the yum that follows is superb.

Turkey, Egg & Swiss Sandwich on a garlic bagel

Finally made it in to The New Daily Bagel to grab a breakfast sandwich and it hit the spot. I tried the turkey, egg, and Swiss breakfast sandwich on a garlic bagel and it was great. I also had a coffee and my order was about $6 total which I thought was reasonable. I can't wait to go back to try some of their house made cream cheeses!

Sloth-like chill attitude encouraged; the hashtag is #letshangtogether. Had fun looking at all the little sloth decor throughout. Lots of light and glass. VERY limited seating; seats about 15 (?) inside; mostly 2 tops and a 6 top. When we walked in, we were greeted warmly, permitted to sit where ever we would like, then handed menus. Turkish music playing was just a bit too loud. Hospitality. Friendly and helpful. Owner-chef seemed very happy to be there, singing and engaging with his regulars. Offerings. Basic breakfast and lunch items with Turkish and Mediterranean classics. No flavored lattes but other basic espresso drinks offered. Chai was excellent. Had the Turkish coffee because it was a Turkish joint; was REALLY good; strong. We had the Simit Platter; sesame-like NY bagel, feta chunks, and olives. All very good. See pics. It was tasty and even better with the bread they provided. It could've been packaged in a better way because the oil dripped out everywhere by the time we got it home. Maybe a plastic container with a tight fitting lid. The mezze platter was also quite nice, especially the carrot appetizer. The bulgur patties were also flavorful. The artichoke was slightly disappointing because it didn't have any other flavor than salt and vinegar, similar to canned/bottled artichokes. The salad was fresh and the dressing was light. Overall, this was a light and tasty lunch.

If you want corned beef or pastrami, greasy grocery store deli meat just doesn't cut it. Checking Yelp delis. I looked in every direction and decided to drive to East Lansing as my corned beef withdrawal pains were getting worse. Stateside Deli sits in a shopping plaza a few miles southeast from MSU. When we arrived both booths and tables were available just after the lunch rush. Just guessing, i'd say there are between 25-30 tables and booths. Even though I didn't need to, I studied the menu knowing that I would probably only get corned beef or pastrami. The soups however looked great as well. I ordered my corned beef extra lean partially as a test and mostly because that is how I like it. Served on toasted rye, that' is exactly how it came. My first bites were euphoric. It only got better. My wife ordered half a sandwich (tuna melt on wheat) along with matzah ball soup. She loved hers as well. I can tell because both the bowl and plate were empty when she was done. She will often not finish if the food is "just OK" Service was excellent and "seamless". One server saw my drink almost empty and quickly returned with another. Another server asked if we needed anything as she was walking by. Our server also kept checking with us to see if we needed anything or if we were enjoying our lunch. If this is the closest deli, so be it. We will be back as often as practical. Only drawback is the hour drive each way and approximately $28 worth of gas.
