If Robert Irvine from "Restaurant Impossible" wanted a real challenge he should come here because this one is neither a restaurant and would be IMPOSSIBLE! The decor is from the seventies, the rug looks like it was pulled off from old casino boat, the service you might as well done it yourself. I've had better food at Home Depot hotdog stand! Avoid at all cost! The owner looks like he's just going through the motions like a zombie. Robert Irvine should call chef Gordon Ramsey to combine the shows "Restaurant Impossible" and "Kitchen Nightmares" to try and help this place, that's how bad it is. We eat here pretty regularly, almost every weekend. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The gentleman who typically runs the host stand on the weekends is very warm and inviting! If it wasn't for the delicious food, we would definitely keep coming back just because of the staff. read more

My wife did the Des plaines River trail race. After the race she needed some food with weight to it so we went to Granny's. The food was fantastic! A home staple of ours when visiting Chicago. The owner George and his son are the best. When visiting ask to sit in Sue's section. She is awesome (has worked here 34 years). Food is the best. I've come here a few times and have always found it a great place for breakfast. The skillets are incredible, and they always make the hash browns a bit crispy when i ask. The coffee is great, smooth and not bitter. I did have one run in with a snooty waitress, but all in all the service is great, and the menu is full of variety. A terrific Greek Breakfast Place. The Omelet's are baked in the oven and are tender and fluffy. Hash browns are pretty good and can be replaced by fresh fruit and a health portion of cantaloupe. The Coffee is fresh ground and if you like Dunkin Donut's coffee you will love theirs. Never had bad service or a bad breakfast at Granny's. The Pancakes are pretty good as well but a bit small. Dinner is hit or miss. Grannys is not a place I would go for Dinner with the "Market Square" across the street. When all said and done you should get away for breakfast Under $10.00 plus tip of course. Opens at 6:00 AM which is getting harder to find a restaurant that opens early. read more

This is an unpretentious, casual spot that was not busy when I met a friend there for breakfast during the week. We were there to catch up, and the waiter was very patient as we took forever to order!! The food was awesome, and very affordable. It was definitely a value for how much food we got. While expecting a wait for Mother's Day, was not expecting to get bumped down the wait list while I was outside. When my name was put in, there were 5 names ahead of me, a party of 6, one of 7 and the others were parties of 2 or 3. After re-checking the list after almost 20 min of waiting, and seeing 5 parties seated, apparently a new list was created and I was informed there was still 2 groups ahead of me. Then finally seated and it takes 5mins to have the carryout woman come over to drop off a check for our server to use and tell us someone will be right with us. 12minutes later, after watching everyone seemingly ignore us, we ask a passing busboy if anyone is assigned to the table, he stops and grudgingly asked if we wanted coffee or water. When he comes back with it, we say, ya know we have been waiting quite a while and no one even greeted us. In response, he was incredibly rude and said, if you don't like it, you can always just leave and walked away. What? Did I really just hear that right? I am sure you have been busy, but no need to be insulting and offensive. We were explaining why we were asking you about our server, because you were visibly unhappy that we presumed to impose and ask you a question. The waitress finally comes over, we place our order and we wait. And we wait. And we wait. After over 30 minutes, and one refill on coffee, still nothing, so we approached the host and let him know that we would be leaving. We ask to pay for our coffee and juice, but he said there was no need. So, at least the owner was decent, but the service, waitress and busboy were appalling. read more

After a 25 year pause, I thought I would try this place again. We came here for Dinner, however, not Breakfast as most of the reviewers did. Maybe dinner is not the best choice of times. It was almost deserted last night when we arrived, and less busy when we left. The food was just ok overall, standard diner fare. We had the chopped steak (ok, but a slightly odd flavor I couldn't place), and the pork cutlet (Pretty good). Each came with soup - chicken noodle was ok, the navy bean was great. Sides (fries or hash browns) were fine. Service was very friendly and very efficient. The prices seem reasonable. Still, based on experience and other's opinions, I'd say go for the breakfasts and save dinner for another place, say the Market Square about 1 block east. read more

Love love love! The food is awesome, but what really makes a great restaurant is the people. Everyone is nice, you will never go without a full water cup, or wait forever for a coffee refill... We just really love this place. I should add we go later in the day -- it may be super busy during breakfast rush, but I'm guessing the food and service are just as great. read more

If there were a way to give this place NO stars I would. Where to begin? The place is a mess, the service is awful, I had to ask for new silverwear becuse what was in the table had hardend eggs on it. the food was served cold and when I poliyly asked to have it replaced with hot food, the server, and then the owner who I asked to speak to after the server rolled her eyes, acted as if it were MY falt my breakfest was room temperature. It then took 20 minutes to get my new on, and it was at best "ok". This place causes great danger of overeating. What a fantastic little find, a true neighborhood gem! From the moment you walk in George and Peter, Owner and chef son, make you feel like part of their extended family. Very welcoming. The waitstaff and bus staff have learned from them, very polite and welcoming. Now the food is the real reason to come here, abundant, fresh and delicious. The hardest decision is what to get-a special because they're only here for a short time- or something on the regular menu because you know how truly fantastic it is. I went here a lot when I was young, but I haven't been here again until recently- almost 20 years. When I was here, I ordered sunnyside-up eggs, toast, hash-browns, and OJ. It tasted pretty good, but it wasn't something that would be featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" or anything. The hash-browns were a little bland. I have eaten here many times over the years. Yesterday was the last! Service was horrible. Waiter was very forgetful. Or he didn't care. My Julienne salad came without tomatoes or hard boiled eggs. I don't know how someone could screw that up. However, I did have old lettuce that should have been in the garbage. My boyfriend told the owner to smell the napkins which smelled like sewage. The owner claimed to smell nothing. Bullshit. Owner said they use 5000 napkins a week. Really? It's never crowded. I love The Original Granny's! I've been coming to this restaurant for years now, and have never been disappointed by the food or service. I appreciate that every time I come in I am welcomed by the owner or his son, and seated almost immediately. I normally come for breakfast and get either an omelet or skillet, but every so often I try one of the son's sweet creations. Recently a whole new "specials" menu has surfaced, with innovative french toast and pancake options that just blow me away. I must warn you though, they are very sweet. Apart from the delicious food, the service is kind and personable and I rarely see the bottom of my coffee cup. I highly recommend coming in for breakfast, lunch, or just coffee. It's warmth and family friendly atmosphere, coupled with food that hits the spot every time has made The Original Granny's my "go-to" breakfast joint when I'm in Illinois. read more

Pretty good breakfast place that is hidden away. Fast service with good quality food. There Mexican skillet was amazing, just needed a few more jalapenos. This place is awful. Went over the weekend, the whole place looks like a mess, the presentation of the food on those cheap plates look bad. They don't even use real syrup for the pancakes (it was very watery, almost like soy sauce). The biscuits and gravy full order is 1.5 biscuits cut up, so I don't even know what the half order would be. Overall, I felt rushed and would never go back there.
