Sometimes places get hyped up due to social media, word of mouth, or television and unfortunately they end up not living up to the hype. The Original Soupman is one of those places. It's been hyped up by Seinfeld lore but to be perfectly honest the soup at this current juncture is unremarkable. I will say it's not on the level of coasting off of Seinfeld fame as Tom's Restaurant. Anyway, I came here recently and ordered the beef chili, the chicken Gumbo, and the tomatoe bisque. All were okay but definitely not something to put on a list of best soups in New York City. I would recommend stopping by for the Seinfeld nostalgia and not necessarily as a foodie/culinary experience. My order was processed pretty quickly. The space itself is to go.

I've probably walked past this place a million times on my way to the bars in Hell's Kitchen and just never stopped--until today. Finally made the pit stop for a lobster roll and checked out the soup board. Not gonna lie, I'm not really a soup person like that, but if I see jambalaya, I'm in. Saw it on the board and that was enough for me. They've got a menu board on the right with all the names and prices--everything's pretty affordable, and honestly any of the soups are a solid add-on to the lobster roll. The lobster roll is kinda small, just keeping it real, but it's really good. Lobster's cold, bun's warm and buttery, and yeah... my hands were fully coated in butter by the end. Messy, but worth it. Usually only like two people working, so if it's busy just expect to wait a little. Only downside is there's nowhere to sit since it's a food stall. But quick tip--go across the street and walk up like a minute (between the Mexican spot and that apartment building), there's a small park with a couple benches. Or if you don't mind walking a bit more, there's seating outside the Shake Shack by the HOPE sign. Lowkey a hidden gem. I'd definitely recommend it if you're in the city. And if they've got jambalaya that day, just get it.

This was one of the most comforting, savory, and hearty meals we went to a few times in the winter cold in early March for a work trip. Luckily for me there weren't a lot of people in line the times I did go. I got to try quite a few soups here. My favorite was the jambalaya and the corn chowder. The bread, fruit, and Andes bar really complete the meal. I actually didn't enjoy the bisque as much as I thought I would. I can see why people who really enjoy lobster bisque would enjoy it, though I prefer mine a bit creamier and less seafood-y tasting. I really hope to come back again in the future. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

The soup was quite good. The only complaint I have was that the fruit they gave us was rotting. I would rather not get anything, than get rotting fruit....

We got the tomato basil soup here, and it was really tasty and comforting. Honestly, the main reason we came was because it reminded us of that memorable moment from Seinfeld, which made the experience even more fun. But beyond the nostalgia, the soup itself was genuinely good and definitely worth trying!

Simple and delicious. Big fan of the no-frills approach, heightening the opportunity to enjoy on-the-go. In reality, however, I found that the soups unfortunately weren't anything special. Nonetheless, it's a great spot if you're looking for something quick, homemade, and satisfying.

Convenient little walk up stand in Midtown. Fairly quick service. The soup was excellent. They include a piece of bread and an apple. The soup was DELICIOUS! Heads up for the Seinfeld tv show fans, don't expect the rude service. They were really nice.

The lobster roll pictured is spoiled!!! I am so disappointed. I smelled it as soon as I opened it. This was my 1st time here and definitely my last. I also got the clam chowder which was good but not enough to trump my disappointment with this spoiled lobster roll. They give you bread, a chocolate candy and an orange. The orange was on its last leg- bruised and old. I threw it away. I can't get over this like wow. A whole spoiled lobster roll. Boooooo!!!

We came, we saw, we ate, we liked. It's iconic in pop culture so we felt compelled to try. It was definitely good but the a little pricey for soup and the lobster roll really under delivered, especially considering the price. The staff was very friendly and provided service with a smile.

Was disappointed by the lobster bisque. The bisque was overloaded with veggies and I mean big chunks of veg. I like my bisque with large chunks of lobster but those were hard to come by. For almost $14 for a "medium" which they call a "large", I expect less veggies and more lobster in a lobster bisque. Maybe I ordered the wrong soup. I'll be back, but I'll never spend the money on lobster bisque again.

Fast service and nice. I enjoyed the New England clam chowder. It's was not too thick and had big pieces of clam. The clam was flavorful and chewy. Of course the soup also came with bread for dipping. 4/5 I also got the bone broth which was kind of herbally and Smokey. I'm not too sure it my kind of broth so maybe I'll try the chicken broth next time. 3/5

Counter serve soups. Never had a bad soup here; they're all hearty and full of flavor. Some of my favorites are Italian wedding, jambalaya, tomato, gumbo, and chili soups. A small and a medium is a good meal sized portion; if I'm very hungry two mediums is great too. I also like how they fill the cups to the brim. You get a chocolate and a piece of fruit with each soup, which is a nice little dessert. Sometimes a couple of people waiting around noon on a weekday but always moves very fast.

I came here because my husband was sick and I wanted to buy him a soup. This place was less than a block from where we were staying. They had fantastic soup, I got the tortilla soup. It came with a piece of bread, a mint, and a whole plum. Very good and tasty. The soup was only $11 for a quart. The service is rather quick. You can't go in or sit down. The booth/stall had soup bowls, but the bowl that we got to go was made of paper. And it had a cover. You tell the person working there the type of soup you want and the size and they ladle it up. It is a very efficient set up. So, I was glad to get in and out and back to my sick hubby. He liked the soup because it had a bit of a kick to it. I only wish they opened earlier than 11 am, otherwise, we could have grabbed some soup on our way out of the city. But. there will be a next time if in the area and wanting some good soup!

How's the chicken and wild rice soup?

It was quite good and tasty. It came with a slice of whole grain bread, a whole plum and a chocolate mint candy.

Is the tomato bisque vegetarian or do they use chicken broth?

Per the picture of the menu, its vegetarian and gluten free but does have dairy and isn't vegan. https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/the-original-soupman-new-york-7?select=A1o_KQiJXhJx-ZEFYfPSKQ

Upon looking at the yelp reviews and pictures, Fish Creeks was it! We made a reservation, which is highly recommended. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed but there wasn't a line. We were seated immediately. The place was nicely lit, not too crowded. It was just my wife and I, so we were seated at a small table. We were greeted by our server. The menu was fairly simple, not too many choices to debate over. That's always a good sign imo. We decided to go with the fried rice (recommended to us), the fried pork belly and the morning glory (veggie). All I have to say is.. WOW. Even being pretty hungover, the food was absolutely amazing. The fried fish was fried to perfection, the herbs really added a nice touch. The fish was so meaty, no bones. The pork belly was a little over fried, but was still delicious. It was a little chewy but the flavors and fried garlic was excellent. The morning glory was cooked perfectly, just like how my mom made it when I growing up. Overall, the meal was 5/5! We couldn't have asked for a better meal, it exceeded all of our expectations. The service was great. The place was booming and it didn't take long to get our food or anything. The staff was friendly and attentive. We will definitely be back next time! We can't wait to try the rest of the menu.. or even getting the same thing because it was that good!

I've been coming here for years, and the quality of the food continues to keep me coming back. During this visit, I ran into a recurring issue with my lobster. It was carrying a large amount of roe, which I was actually happy about because I enjoy it and didn't want any of it to go to waste. However, the roe deep inside wasn't fully cooked during the initial steaming process. I had to go back and forth with Ash and the kitchen staff several times, but they remained patient, attentive, and committed to making sure everything was cooked properly. Ash, one of the managers, provided excellent customer service throughout the experience. While I was waiting, he kindly offered me a complimentary cup of New England clam chowder, which was absolutely delicious and very much appreciated since I was starving.
