So I normally dislike reviews that take one experience and apply it to all possible experiences. Do you know what I mean? If someone felt they were treated rudely by a waitress, that doesn't mean everyone that walks in will be treated the same way by that or any member of the staff. Yet here I am writing one of those reviews, because the complete lack of management was appalling. And I had no real interpersonal issue with anybody, so what happened to me could happen to you. We invited a neighbor out to the fun new place in town called THE OVERLAND -- that we'd been dying to try. We tried to get reservations early Friday because it was a Friday night. But their website appeared broken. When you clicked MAKE RESERVATIONS, nothing happened. We even called but got no call backs. We show up at 6PM and get THE BIG SIGH. "Yeah, umm... SIGH... we're having a big party on the patio and our reservations are booked for the night... SIGH." I'm highlighting the SIGHS because the staff isn't supposed to SIGH at us at how hectic their life is. It's OUR place to SIGH at the staff for failing to properly warn us the place was already booked for the night. So they sit us at a long high top where you're kind of sharing your table with 12 other people. Luckily a sweet patron volunteered to move so that we could sit across from our neighbor and create the illusion of an actual table. Soon the attentive staff did show up to take a drink order, but with a SIGH and a grimace our wait person then broke the news that because of the large party out on the patio -- there would be no food for at least an hour. We should have been told that at the door, right? As to not raise a fuss we ordered drinks and they were pretty good. The music was nice. The thing is -- -- restaurants that have an artsy fancy hipster "vibe" twist pride themselves on not being chain restaurants. I celebrate that and I get that. But with this territory often comes this odd feeling that they have no clue how to run a restaurant. "We're trying our best" with a SIGH doesn't cut it after being in business more than a few months. All 'soft openings' must come to end, people. Some Pro Tips -- 1. If your website cannot take any additional reservations, it should indicate as much. To us, it simply appeared broken. You've been open for three years and this isn't fixed YET? 2. At the door, we needed to be told there's a big function and it might be better to come back another night. Or, even more professional -- 3. -- either close the entire restaurant for a 'Private Function' or 4. -- have additional kitchen staff ready to handle both the restaurant AND the large party. Sorry folks, but you made one lousy first impression. I'm at a loss to understand why there should be a second. read more

One of the best restaurants in Redlands. Overland exceeds expectations every time. Get the devil eggs. That's all I'll say for that.... We come here specifically for steak and frites. The steak is always seasoned perfectly with just the right amount of salt and the frites are always crispy served with fresh garlic aioli it hits every single time. Pairs great with a lime margarita on the rocks. Service has always been great their staff really pays attention to detail and is quick and very helpful. While I have enjoyed all of their cocktails, the food quality can be inconsistent. The ingredients are clearly high quality, but the flavors do not always come together. I have tried several of their rotating salads and seafood dishes, and the fish tends to lean toward stronger, slightly musty flavors. The greens are fresh, but the vinaigrette is overly acidic and lacks balance from oil or spices. The Brussels sprouts shared a similar fate, being rather bland besides a light coating of balsamic vinegar. The burger was taller than it was wide and tasted like a fairly standard offering, though I was amused by the oversized piece of lettuce. The fries, however, were outstanding. They were golden brown with a fluffy interior and coated in Indian spices. The curry ketchup elevated them even further. The drinks are served in tall glasses and are quite potent. Each cocktail packs a punch, and I especially enjoy their house specials, which bring noticeable spice, heat, and bite. The flavors are more unique than those of a typical mule or margarita. I went to The Overland for dinner and drinks because it's decorated for Christmas time !! Upon entering , it literally looks like someone threw up Christmas all over and I loved it !! So many lights and decor that ranges from something you'd find at Target to something that reminds you of your grandmas house when you were a kid . Service was friendly and fast ! I made a reservation and received a confirmation, but upon arrival, we learned the reservation system wasn't working. For entrées, we ordered the wedge salad and the steak frites. The fries were excellent, crisp and flavorful, and the wedge salad was fresh and well-balanced. The steak was tender and came with a garlic-style dipping sauce that added a nice touch. We wrapped up the evening with an espresso martini, which was the perfect finish. Honestly, I think this place is overrated. I was originally excited to try this "Christmas Bar", but drinks are meh, ambiance is loud and crowded, and service is really inattentive even when they're not busy. The first time I came here I also didn't know that they require reservations. So even though the entire hour and a half me and my date were at Overland, and there were at least ten empty tables plus at least four empty bar seats, they wouldn't sit us. So we just had to awkwardly stand at this crowded side place with all the other people without a reservation. I had also originally wanted to order some food, but with the tiny awkward space, I waited until we went to the next bar. I just got two Proseccos, which for being the only sparkling wine on the menu, they could def get a better quality of wine - just not the best. My date ordered two cocktails and really wasn't a fan of either of them - saying they were really watered down with more of a juice taste than anything - and their cocktails are pretty pricey for being the inland empire - like DC and LA prices. Though I didn't try them as I don't like liquor. It was hard to put in another order for a drink both times me and my date tried to - the server just kept passing us even when we flagged them. I ended up just going to the bar since I was being ignored, but my date waited for the server (I got mine before her lol). Been again just because someone wanted to try it, and again same experience of being ignored and meh drinks. Overall, not a place I'd willingly come back to again. The risotto was made with pearled farro so very healthy but also very tasty with lots of shrimp. But my favorite of the 3 dishes we ordered would have to be the house burger. It is simply melt in your mouth delicious with juicy grass fed beef, soft brioche buns, buttered lettuce, juicy riped tomatoes, & melted sharp cheddar in a light secret sauce. The Overland overtakes a historic building in downtown Redlands and is smack dab on the main street next to the train station and market. Well, your experience varies on when you go. We just went in the evening, arriving 6:30 pm Tuesday to be specific. The good? Happy hour prices, and the drinks are good. The less good? Afternoon bartender is lackluster and not great at service. We sat at the bar this time, and it looks cool. Turntable, huge speakers, and like a thousand records. There's a live DJ spinning those records too, but off the wall modern jazz that seemed like his jam only. We were ignored most of the hour we were there. This was my second visit here in the past year and finally decided to review it. Parking- as others have said it can be tricky especially on a busy Friday or weekend night. Atmosphere/service: very cute and small interior, reservations recommended to ensure a table. They have an outside patio too but seemed too cold of a night for that. Although given the volume of the music inside, I will consider outside seating next time as I struggled to have a convo inside with my friend sitting across from me. Staff were all very nice. Drinks: tried the Up from the south which was very fresh tasting. The Morning Bell was frozen, good but very sweet. Food: I love the menu but feel some items could be improved upon. The 10/10 item was the Beets by Nay appetizer salad. Perfection, no notes, would get again and again. In fact, there were so many spiced pecans leftover from this salad, that I added them to the classic wedge salad which really elevated that dish. The shrimp cocktail isn't my typical order but the shrimp was fresh tasting and suave had good flavor. The Brussels sprouts was a slight miss. Cooked to perfection, but the balsamic glaze was poured with too heavy a hand which made it hard to eat. The truffle cheese fries were the second best item we ordered. Would get again. Biggest let down of the night were the deviled eggs. Maybe with salt and pepper they would have been substantially improved. I'm not sure how but they were incredibly bland, as if you were just eating a hard boiled egg plain. All in all I would go again, try outside so it's easier to converse, and try a few other menu items. Hopefully the kitchen keeps the fries and beet salad as they are the stars. read more
