My first review ever but I felt compelled after a terrible dinner at the Palm in Tysons on New Years Eve. Dry, bland octopus appetizer on a bed of dry, bland beans. A steak tartar that both looked and tasted like they purchased some 80/20 ground beef from Giant and served it right out of the styrofoam package . Worse of all, they delivered a NY Strip so under-seasoned, so undercooked and so grey with legit zero sear on it that it looked like it was cooked on a backyard grill whose coals went cold an hour ago. Dined here Sunday 12/12 to celebrate my 40th birthday. The food was horrible, I ordered the Salmon with asparagus and beans with a side of Garlic Mashed Potatoes. My Salmon was not cooked thoroughly, the asparagus was not hot and the Mashed Potatoes taste like nothing but garlic. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I ended up sending my food back and was so disgusted and disappointed that I didn't eat anything that night. I could not get that nasty garlic taste out of my mouth..... My bf made early valentine's reservations for 4:30 pm. We don't normally dine at fancy steakhouses but we had an amazing time. Decided to splurge and go for the Nova Scotia lobster dinner for 2. The entire course was delicious and filling down to the lobster bisque. In addition to the lobster, we opted for the 14 oz filet mignon and it just melted in our mouths. The New York cheesecake that we ended up bringing home was still delectable the next day. Our waiter was professional and attentive. Wow! Amazing staff. Amazing food. Amazing prices for such a great place! The "half and half" chips & onion straws rocked. And the shrimp cocktail -- I have never seen shrimp that large - ever. I ordered a salad and asked that a crabcake (app) be added to it - as my entree. No problem. And the crabcake was a CRABcake - not much filler, and well-seasoned. The wine was great. My companion's steak was cooked to perfection. The Brussels sprouts and the potatoes - excellent. The ambience incredible. And the staff - over the top woh service and friendliness. This particular Palm always has wonderful service. (Way better than LA for example). We had a great meal, but what I remembered from all of the past dining experiences, is this is a spot to bring someone for a special occasion. In this case, I was rewarding an over-achieving employee, and we had great food, great service and the ambiance was perfect! My wife and I went to The Palm in Tyson's for our 10th anniversary. We had been to the restaurant at least twice before and had good experiences. This time, we were seated, waited about 10 minutes for the waiter arrive who took our drink orders. Almost 39 mins later the drinks arrived. He already had our food order, a steak and lobster to share with some sides. We waited until we had been there for 1 1/2 hours. The waiter kept telling us it would be there any minute. Finally, I went to see the manager who told me the waiter was 3 days on the job and was late turning the food order in. He urged us to sit and he would have the food out in a minute. A few minutes later, the food comes out and it's already split up on 2 plates. We each had 2 large claws and a tail. The claws weren't opened and we no way of opening them. But the worst was the first bite of the lobster. Dried out to the point of being nearly dessicated. I'm sure it had to be $125 or so. At that point, we got up and walked out. We had a nice chat with Nick, the Manager, and told him the lobster was terrible. The restaurant was full that night, maybe they have rookies on the floor and in the kitchen, but this is a high end restaurant. We certainly expected much better. The experience was a hot mess. Omg!! This place is soooo good!! I definitely can't wait to go here again on my anniversary. My vendor took me here for the first time and I fell in love with all the food! We started with the shrimp cocktail: the shrimps were humungous, the shrimp Bruno, the sauce is sooo good and calamari, also delish!! I had the bone-in delmonico and it was so flavorful and cooked perfectly. I can see why it was a $99 dollar steak. And last but not least, make sure you get the carrot cake!!! It's to die for!! You cannot get carrot cake like this ANYWHERE!! The only downside I would say is the service. Our waiter was pretty slow and at times nowhere to be found. But the food makes up for it. read more

The Palm in Tyson's is by far the worst steak house in the DMV. My sides included can corn and mashed potatoes from a box. Our steaks were cheap cuts of meat and dry. My sea bass tasted like something you would cook at home and not from a commercial grade stove/grill. The service was outstanding but I would never go to restaurant again. read more

What an amazind Birthday dinner! Came for the 3 lb lobster special. Totally unbelievable meal and the staff certainly help to make the experience wonderful. Sara M. was our waitress and she was excellent from start to finish. The bus staff was also wonderful. When they brought our lobster dinners, they took care of cracking open the huge claws. The preparation was perfect, the lobster meat was delicious and the service was perfect and on point. We also got the hash brown potatoes to share amongst the three of us and individual creamed spinach and brussel sprouts. We asked Sara to have the chef cook the hash browns in light olive oil instead of butter. The last time we had dinner here, we didn't feel well afterwards due to the oily nature of the hash browns. This time around they were still as delicious and we felt fine after eating them. I chose this restaurant for my birthday celebration and it was the right place overall. Great food, excellent service, delicious lobster and excellent dessert choices. Thanks to Sara and the rest of the staff for making my birthday celebration wonderful. This is a dependable choice, for either lunch or dinner. I have been here many many times (almost weekly for a few years). Certainly more along the lines of an old school steak house (reflected in patrons too), and not as current as newer restaurants in menu or environment. - Meat is solid. Exactly what you would expect from the Palm, and consistent with other locations. One of the best lunch options is the burger. Honestly one of the best burgers I have ever had, and only about $16. The downside is that they have trouble getting the temperature right. "Medium Rare" will be much more like a rare burger. Surprising for a steak house. My second favorite is a splurgy ($26) crab-cobb salad. Humongous lumps of sweet crab meat. Expensive but worth it. Lobster bisque is quite rich and also good. - Bread is available, but usually a bit cold/bordering on stale sometimes. - Drinks are expensive. Be warned soft drinks are $4.50 and come in little bottle - no refills! - Dessert - do not miss the carrot cake, upgraded to the enormous portion for two. It is so big you will have lots of leftovers, especially good for breakfast the next day. I also recommend the bag of fresh donuts. I have found the service to be a bit gruff. Often I get the sense I am not getting the same service as a high spending regular (perhaps on the older side?). It is ok, but could use to be enhanced a bit for the caliber of restaurant the Palm wants to be/ was. Unless you are in the back room, or a private room, it gets quite loud and could be hard for large groups or older folks to hear conversation clearly. read more

We came here one night after spending the day at Tyson's Corner. Since it was my birthday month, I received a voucher for a free steak or lobster. We made reservations for 6:30 but we got their early. Although our table was available; we wanted to sit by the bar for a couple drinks and I wanted to watch a college basketball game that was on ESPN. The bartender was rude from the get go. we tried to joke around with him but he gave us a look of disgust. When I asked him to put on ESPN, he said give me one minute. Twenty minutes later he finally put it on. Mind you, the bar was empty and the restaurant only had a couple tables seated. Once he saw ESPN had college basketball on, he said no one down here watches this crap. Well now I knew he was giving us an attitude because he knew we were from the northeast. I am his only customer, I don't think it matters at that time what other people like. If the bar was packed and they the majority wants to watch another sport, I wouldn't care. So now we ask to be seated. Once the waitress saw I had a voucher for a free birthday meal; her energy level and service level decreased. After ordering, I don't think I saw her until it was time to get the check. Once again, I want to point out that the restaurant was basically empty. I've been to the Palm in Atlantic City and to two locations in NYC, their service and food has always been fantastic. The one in Tyson's Corner has good food but the service is horrible. We really wanted to like Palm. We have been searching for a "special occaision" restaruant for a while and decided to give Palm a try. In this price range, you should expect a certain ambiance that encourages good conversation supplemented by memorable food and attentive, yet discrete wait staff. Unfortunately, Palm fails both the "ambiance" and "memorable food" tests. After leaving Palm, our ears were ringing -- literally. The restaurant is LOUD!! With nothing to soak up the sound of conversation and diners sitting almost family style, DO NOT go to Palm if you plan to have a quiet conversation. The noise level eliminates any pretense of "romantic". I felt like I was sitting in a dining room with about 100 relatives -- all of them shouting because they forgot to turn up their hearing aids. Then you have the "screamers" -- a couple of tables had people who WOULD NOT BE DENIED. They actually started shouting at the top of their voices to be heard! Oh, my aching ears. Prolonged dining at Palm will leave you hearing impared. With that said, the portions are very large (as are the prices), the service very professional and attentive, and the portraits on the walls interesting (you NEED something to do -- conversation is impossible). Did I say the portions are large? I meant HUGE -- like food for three huge, I imagine trying to finish a three or four course meal at Palm would be akin to competing at a hot dog eating contest (you need to train for it -- and have the metabolism for it). Unfortunately, the food really isn't all that tasty. After appetizers and about one-third of our entrees, we were full and anxious to get away from the oppressive noise. Overall, Palm was disappointing. The noise level is oppressive. You get lots of food, but it is so uninspired that we left our leftovers (we NEVER leave leftovers). For example, the mozzerella cheese on the "Capri" salad was chewy and tasteless -- like soft styrofoam. The broiled sea bass was equally tasteless (I suppose that's why they served two sauces with the fish). If I wanted to taste a sauce (rather than the food), I would go to a barbeque restaruant. Palm bills itself as a "steakhouse", so where else to get a nice fillet mignon? NOT Palm. My first clue that disappointment loomed ahead was my need to "saw" my way into the steak. I have eaten fillet mignons that could be cut with a fork. but I have NEVER had one that required a steak knife and still put up a fight. To the kitchen's credit, the steak was cooked exactly as ordered, but the meat was chewy and tasteless -- except for the librally applied salt. The steak LOOKED like a fillet mignon, but tasted like ground round -- a $40 hunk of ground round. No, we won't be back. read more

I generally don't love big chain restaurants, but due to the proximity to my work, we often end up at the Palm for happy hour. Their specials are only available for very specific hours, so be sure to check the HH hours for your local Palm. My new favorite is the jalapeno basil tuna sashimi - beware as it is actually a bit spicy (perfect for me, but my dinner companion had to chug down water to deal). Had dinner with the family tonight and we are very disappointed. First off after years of tmhavingva great bread basket they've reverted to rolls. The bread is still available from the bakery but is no longer being sourced from there. We've been coming here for years and it's been increasingly disappointing. The food quantity has been getting smaller and smaller and the quality and service keeps declining as well. It seems to be focused on $$ and leveraging the brand name. One steak came out raw, another tasteless. Salmon should be half pound per serving. It was not, it was tiny, $44 and mediocre. $5 worth of fish poorly prepared. Everything we had we can make better at home. Pretty much anyone could. Nothing was special. This is a tradition that needs to be remembered and no longer continued. We used to look forward to a great meal or party at the Palm. Very sad. Ownership maybe? Who knows. It just doesn't matter. It is what it is and not what it was. read more

Less is More at the Palm in my dining experience. It was my birthday, but they never knew because the service got off to a crappy start and kept going with food delivery. I'm going by the numbers. Valet was easy and quick to get into our 8PM appointment time. We arrived and were greeted & seated. No issues there. We couldn't decide if they wanted to portray a bar or fine dining experience as the walls are covered with celebrity cartoon drawings, but seating is by tables (no booths). That wasn't an issue for us, but probably determined our service level. After being seated and looking over their menu for about 10 minutes; we finally got a waiter whom we heard before he got to the table. It was something about his voice that was just loud, AND while he was greeting us, he was still looking back laughing and joking with another table...how rude. Finally at our table; we ordered water with lemon and off he flew without another word or asking anything else. We stated in our reservation that this was our first time at the restaurant. He got worse...he was RUDE. So more waiting and finally I ask menu suggestions and he just points at the menu and said it was all good. I'm fuming now, but my wife has taken me out for my birthday and my 13 year old daughter is present so I really work on myself. Even she tried to make up for his attitude (a 13 year old) saying that he must have had a long day. I ached inside for them both as I wanted to leave. Finally we choose a wine and again he's off. He came back with the bottle and poured a taste with no words. I taste it and agree to drink it while looking around seeing almost every other table with decanters; I ask him what did we have to do special to get a decanter. He barks that we just need to ask. I then tell him that this our first time and he should slow down a bit and be more helpful. I got the head nod at that point. I need to point out that this guy was LOUD everywhere else and joking with other tables like he knew them, but with us....just RUDE. The food was cooked wrong. A $49 9 ounce filet was ordered MED rare and served MED at this suggestion that I order that temp because 'THEY' cook steaks differently. I send it back and get a rare steak...literally ice cold in the middle. I ask to just cook that steak a little longer because I felt embarrassed for them and frustrated. The Au Gratin potatoes were scalding hot and had to be cut through and let sit for about 10 minutes; they had no flavor at all. The creamed spinach was ok and about the best thing there. My daughter ordered her Ahi Tuna medium and got it well done...not red anywhere. We tried a desert because we were celebrating but we dared not tell them; the waiter was just WRONG. It was ok and my wife talked me into carrot cake that I LOVE. It had decent flavor. About $300 later; time to go. My wife paid the tip and tipped that lousy waiter a full 20%. He was lucky that she was on the money end this weekend; because he deserved a book on customer service as his tip. So here I am in the DC area, and soon after checking into the Ritz, I am famished. It's already late, and a bunch of friends are already walking over to the Palm to smoke cigars, so why not? This place is a steak house. I ordered two items: a lobster bisque, and filet mignon. The bisque was rich and creamy, but a little too salty. The filet was great, but note that all you get is a plate of beef -- so order sides if you want some balance. If you like steak, I'd encourage you to eat here. read more

The waiters assist you on putting your bibs on, and crack your lobster for you. I had better food at other seafood establishments. The food wasn't horrible, but it didn't have that WOW FACTOR. I'm here to re-review the Palm in Tysons. I still give it 5 stars because even after 11 years, they still deliver my lobster to me exactly the way I like it: broiled and served WITH the innards. I'm writing this review because I had a very disappointing lobster experience this summer at the Capital Grille down the street -- they removed the entire tail and innards (a.k.a mustard), cleaned the shell, put the tail back in and served it to me, after I specifically explained to the server that my favorite part of the lobster (and pretty much the only part I eat) is the innards/mustard. He was incredibly apologetic; I didn't have the heart to ask him to correct it so I doggy bagged the thing. I must've had 3 or 4 vodka martinis to compensate. So, again, the Palm is still THE place to go for my unadulterated lobster fix ;) read more

Just what you'd expect from a place that rolls off the toungue like Thurston Howell the 3rd would say it (Gilligans Island reference if you were born after 1990). This is one of those places that LOVE celebrity types, professional athletes and Daddy Warbucks looking dudes to come rolling out of a limo out front. You wanna bring your prom date and score go here. Bring your cougar neighbor , you'll score. Bring your buddiies mom.....whoa.....what the F? Hey...you thought it not me. Heres how I roll at The Palm. I was popping tags at the thrift store and scored me a circa 1980s Armani. Big flashy watch from Kohls and the ace in the hole....a big lapel pin I got off Ebay that has the NBC emblem/peacock on it. Borrow my buddies Mercedes (no I didn't take his mom). Walk in...ask for "my usual seat". Wooooo , watch em work boys... service just went to 5 stars. The point here is, any redneck with half brain can shelp into a class joint like this place and get service like rich dudes that will leave the same tip. Do your homework, reap the benefits. My first experience at the Palms in Tysons and was just as good as DC, and Vegas, except the Palms in Vegas is in Las Vegas, which does take the #1 spot b/c it is in my favorite city. Any hew, me and Yana had a wonderful evening at the Palms. The service was excellent with our server Mishka who was referred by friends of ours. Mishka is Russian so him and Yana were able to chat a bit. Even recommended of a good Russian store in Baltimore. We will have to check that out and give it some reviews. We had a great dinner with us getting our usual Surf-n-Turf. A 3 pound lobster and a huge steak to split. Best lobster in town. The presentation is beautiful especially when I'm assuming the professional claw breaker comes over to go to work? Interesting!!! So if your ever heading to the Palms in Tysons then ask for Mishka and tell him Yana and Reggie sent you. He works all the time and will give you the service you deserve. read more

I love the salmon there and the chocolate flourless cake. However, they don't know how to prepare steak at all unless its rare or medium rare. As soon as you ask for anything well done, your steak comes out as tough as rubber. Also the service leaves much to be desired. Personally, I am not a fan of restaurants who accept reservations since it can lead to an elitist state of mind where people are foolish enough to book weeks or months in advance for just a simple dinner. However, if a restaurant makes the choice to have reservations, then they should have priority reservations for their members who have accumulated a lot of points after spending thousands of dollars at their location. Specially when it's your birthday. But no such luck. I will not be returning. read more

It doesn't get much better than The Palm. I came here for prom a few years ago and still have very fond memories of the meal and service, and am so glad to see that this place hasn't changed a bit since that night. I had the businessman's lunch (~$23 for a soup or salad, an entrée, and a dessert) this past week. Service here is very quick, very friendly, and very attentive. My Caesar salad wasn't overloaded with dressing or cheese, which I appreciated. I had the salmon, which was very tender and perfectly portioned. You get to choose one side, so my healthy side chose broccoli. I've learned from experience that it's very hard to properly steam broccoli, but The Palm gets it just right. It wasn't soggy or limp, but didn't give me a toothache either. For my dessert, I got the key lime pie and had to hold myself back from finishing the whole thing. The berry and whipped cream pairings are the perfect touch to generous slice with the ideal tartness. Delicious! Those dining with me also commented on how rich the flourless chocolate cake was, but that it wasn't overwhelmingly sweet either. All in all, The Palm is a reliable, worry-free restaurant where great service and food can always be expected...and received! read more

Went here for a company Christmas party. The bill was extravagant. The food was good, but not overwhelmingly so. They seemed to pride themselves on serving us an *enormous* lobster, but it's my understanding - and my anecdotal experience - that after a certain size, you might as well eat artificial crabmeat stuffed into a previously used lobster. The steak was pretty good, but didn't distinguish itself from any of the other local steakhouses. Capital Grille or Morton's would be my next stop before heading back to the Palm. read more

Great lobster special for 2....$114 for 5 lb lobster....Woo Hoo!! thats all I had to hear at this Palm in Tysons Corner VA, next door to the Ritz Carlton Hotel. I had to explain the caricatures on the wall to a first timer in the group but the place was warm and service exceptional. The waiter was walking around showing off a live 6 lb lobster and it was grabbed up immediately by a lucky diner. I cant comment on the steaks as none were ordered that night. We had been to Flemings the night before and had fantastic meat offerings there. I heartily can recommend this fine dining establishment to all with a big appetite and wallet to match. I had an opportunity to dine at the Tyson's Palm recently and was quite surprised at the quality as well as the quantity of food served that evening. Wow, what a different from a few years ago. The prime rib was terrible. It looked like someone boiled it and didn't do a good job because the center was still cold. The appetizers quantity were so small that folks were afraid to take more than one piece fearing there weren't enough to go around. I literally left there shocked and speechless. It has been about two months since the dinner and finally had enough nerves to write a review hoping that the management would read it and perhaps make changes back to what made The Palms so famous years ago. Overall a very good night at the Palm. I must be getting pickier on my steaks as I don't find them to be perfect anywhere anymore. The steak was perfectly medium rare as ordered, but the outside didn't have a great sear on it. Having said that, it was good. The service was great, the bread was great, the carrot cake was the best I have ever had, the wine, Seven Deadly Zins, was great, the iced tea was tremendous.
