This is a quick cheap eatery. Its child friendly, neat and close to the board walk. I had the chicken quesadilla (ok) and my husband the egg combo (also ok) Nothing great to write home about. We also had a blueberry pancake which I thought was good. Location, location, location. Penguin diner has it. We've been four times and we've always had excellent service. Last week we ordered take-away for a picnic dinner on the beach. The cashier was super helpful offering up extra napkins and ketchup. I've also had take-away Egg Pengwich and it was tasty. The children's artwork hanging up is very cute. I've worked in many restaurants and one of them was a "paper store", no automatic dishwasher. I consider myself quite green and appreciate it when restaurants make the effort. Sometimes space dictates what you can and cannot do. Penguin Diner could take the retail space away and make room for a dishwasher, but there's a lot that goes into redesigning a restaurant. If this is the only "paper restaurant" in Bethany - then go there or don't go there. Go to Mango's and see if they're recycling all those bottles (I think not). Food...the food is not homemade and the quality is not good. The sweet potatoes fries (which probably arrive frozen as opposed to fresh sliced) are yummy. The veggie burger (Morningstar - yuck) is not tasty. The Bacon cheddar burger isn't a "good burger" either. I've asked for water twice (once when just ordering ice cream and once when getting take-away) and they were kind enough to give me a cup without charging me like a bunch of the other beach take-away restaurants. read more

How can service be so shitty when no ones here? There are maybe 5 tables and I can see at least 10 staff members where I'm sitting. Refills barely happened, took so long to get the check, and the food was not impressive. The crab cake was cold, they put tomato on even when we asked for there to be none, the guacamole is a green that I don't think I've ever seen except for someone getting sick, and the ketchup bottles could really use a good cleaning. I also wish I hadn't looked down when they were sweeping the floor. At least they were sweeping. The staff stands by the register or sits at the counter and just hangs out. At least half of the people here aren't doing anything. During the course of our meal two people had to walk to the counter in order to get service. A kid walked up and ordered a milkshake and pointed to what table he's at, and another man walked up to the register to pay the bill because no one came to his table to pick it up. I'm not old enough to drink, but the bar looked pretty good. Go get slightly drunk and maybe you'll have a better experience than we did. read more

Cutest penguin themed diner! The menus have adorable penguin drawings by kids, wish I got a picture of them!! They recently redecorated and got new menu, if you have been before, or read old reviews give them another try, totally different scene. They have some unusual breakfast items: homemade granola crusted French toast, and salmon omelette (we had both and liked them both!! See photos!). Defiantly worth checking out! read more

I only ever come in the off season, but service is always excellent and fast. The food is fresh and tasty, with a variety of options to suit many pallets. I have enjoyed the chicken Cesar wrap, grown up grilled cheese and a number of their salads. It's great they offer gluten free bread, a perk when dining out with my gluten intolerance mom. read more

I ordered the vermonster, which is basically a bacon cheeseburger. The burger was ok, nothing special about the patty itself. However the bacon was fantastic-two very thick & large cut pieces that really saved the meal. The fries were delicious. The Mrs. ordered the fish tacos which she raved about for days. Didn't try them but knowing her opinion of food, they must have been good. In addition to these, we also ordered a peach sangria which was very tasty. I server was super friendly & although she disappeared for a while (she said it was because she spilled a soda on someone), she very attentive. The only hangup for me was the price - since they market the place as farm to table which means they can charge more. What I do like about the penguin is its very casual easy dining in a nice setting which is a nice change of pace from the busyness of Bethany beach. read more

Had brunch Sunday just before noon. My girl had been there once before but I had only taken pics of here there with the penguin. I had the cream chipped beef and it was excellent. Melanie had fried eggs and toast. She was thrilled that they had gluten free bread from our favorite bakery/cafe. They had jams and jellies from nearby Millsboro. Our waitress was very congenial and the coffee and bloody Mary's were both good. I know, don't ask. We will be back to explore more of the menu. Loved the penguin motif. read more

Excellent breakfast! Stopped in with the family on our way out of town. My wife emailed them via their website the day before and got a nice response from the owner. Our daughter is allergic to nuts and we were informed that have a separate station for allergy customers because they do make Nutella pancakes. It's a difficult task to find restaurants that understand this and can make us feel comfortable taking our daughter there, but they were great. The breakfast was fantastic and my daughter didn't die so I'll give that a 5 star rating. read more

Everything we tried was fabulous: tacos with fresh catch (rockfish last night), tacos with salmon, and tuna melt, and always house-made delicious chips and fries. When they're not, the staff are like headless chickens, no one pitching in to deliver another's food (the wait is usually long anyway...) However, when the owners are there, both the food and service are markedly better. (Maybe they should hire a manager, and if they have, maybe they should get a new one!) We were early to the beach and were the first customers in after they unlocked the doors. My sons had the silver dollar pancakes off the kids menu, one with blueberries and the other with chocolate chips. There were 4 small pancakes on the plate, and my kids can eat. I should have ordered from the regular menu for them. Still, they were happy and the price was good. My husband ordered Andy's Jumbo Breakfast wrap and it was huge! But even bigger was the amount of home fries on the plate. Enough for everyone at our table to sample and lots left over. I had the French Toast with 2 eggs and it was good and filling. The staff was kind and patient. And the kids are encouraged to draw a penguin on the back of their kids menu, so it can be displayed as the cover of the regular menu. This is probably one of the worst breakfast experiences I've ever had. To start, the latte machine was broken, which normally would not be a big deal had that been the only thing wrong. I ended up ordering the French toast combo, and it did not live up to the expectations or the price that was placed on it. The eggs were one of, if not the worst I've ever had, and the four little slivers of one piece of French toast did not save the meal. Our server did not check on us once to see how the food was, and did not offer any type of compensation after admitting the eggs looked bad. I paid $12 for my meal alone after having to flag down my waitress to pay the bill. I don't want to lash out, but this place sucks. Would not recommend. read more

Last year I went to the Penguin diner in Bethany Beach, Delaware. The food was expensive and the service was awful. I waited over an hour for pancakes. I decided to give it another try. Guess what...the place still sucks. The food and the service didn't improve at all. It took almost a 1/2 hour for someone to take my order (a BLT) and another 1/2 hour for the waitress to bring me the sandwich. Both times the waitresses were snippy and rude. Popped into The Penguin for a very early lunch. I've never eaten in Bethany before and wanted to get something on the main strip. The Penguin is a cute little restaurant and seemed like a local favorite. The four stars goes to the food. My husband had the humongous blueberry pancakes which he said were some of the best he ever had. My son enjoyed them as well. He also ordered a smoothie which they both loved. I ordered the salmon BLT and boy was I glad I did. The bacon was crispy, the salmon was cooked perfectly for a sandwich and the aioli brought it all together. The homemade chips were fantastic as well especially as the aioli dripped on them. The service wasn't very attentive, but we didn't really need him much. All in all, I would definitely stop back in for a bite. read more

The Penguin Diner was a disappointment for breakfast. The service was very friendly but didn't make up for the lackluster food. My french toast was not hot off the griddle, tasting like it had been pre-made and then just heated up. The eggs were dry and the serving of hash browns was small. The food quality is not worth the price. Their wacky ordering system has you go up to the cash register to get a menu and go find a seat, come back up to the register to order and get a number, go sit down and wait for your food, and go back up to the register when you're finished to pay. read more

We came here a couple of years ago and it was great, so we were excited to come back. I don't typically write Yelp reviews but this place was so bad I felt it would be a disservice to not warn others. They have since refurbished the place and updated the menu, both for the worse. Service was awful. We waited 20 minutes for our waters, and another 15 minutes for our drinks. The food was mediocre at best. The $12 huevos rancheros used to include avocado and were fantastic. Now, if you would like some (terrible) salsa, you can pay $1 for a tablespoon of it. Don't order gazpacho, it's under-seasoned and served room temperature (it is meant to be served cold). The whole experience lasted about and hour and a half... Never coming back. They were better off as a diner. read more

Watch your wallet!!!! Went there to grab a quick bite to eat and was worried about all the bad reviews I saw on here after we ordered. Our food turned out ok. (Burger was well in instead of medium, but I was ok with it.) Wife had french toast and liked it. The kids had the chocolate chip pancakes (only comes with one pancake, but they don't each much). My wife and I even talked about writing a good review because it honestly was pretty good. My problem came with the bill. It was about $50 and when I asked to see the bill the guy ran my credit card before printing out the receipt. (The kids food was over priced by over a dollar each. It was $15 for 3 kids pancakes when it should have been 3.95 each (not including the $2 and change drinks each kid had) . The guy behind the counter started helping someone else and a waitress came over and said she was not sure she could help. The guy who was helping another customer kept saying we only get one deal (2 kids eat free with a paying adult or a 10% coupon my wife had). I said fine, but the kids meals were charged too much and the 2 pancake meals where a better deal than the 10% coupon. He only said back to me you only get one deal. I was not going to argue over a few $ , so I left a tip (that hopefully goes to the girl that brought the food and napkins) and decided to add to the bad reviews. We brought out-of-town guests to this restaurant. We had never tried it before. That was a mistake. We received terrible service on a Sunday morning when there were really very few diners in the restaurant (now I know why). There was a kid banging the riser of the bench he was sitting on - the entire time we were there, and other kids running around the restaurant unhindered. The food seemed of decent quality but the pricing was way high for what you got ($10 for orange juice? Fresh-squeezed, sure but really - $10?). I wrote this same review on Facebook and the owner responded that they had been in business for 13 years - which I guess was an attempt to somehow rationalize what they believed to be longevity, then immediately took down their comments when common sense set in. I would not recommend this restaurant to any one visiting or living in the local Bethany area. I believe you can get high quality food, a pleasant dining experience, with good service, and at a better price at other places in the area. All this place has going for it is its location near the boardwalk. The rest is form over substance. read more

I liked this place. I was surprised at so many bad reviews. It is a little unconventional in that you go up to the counter and order your food yourself. We were a group of eight..I had them read the menu, I wrote down the order and gave it to the guy at the desk. I ate a cheesesteak which was very tasty, it came with home made potato chips which were delicious. My family ate a variety of items, cheese quesidilla, cheeseburger and chicken caesar wrap.
