We were there for breakfast 7/21/15, a Tuesday at 11:00. Although the French toast (granola crusted) was pricey $11, it was served with fresh fruit and real syrup. It was fabulous! My son ordered pancakes, which were covered with powdered sugar, but with no butter and a small side of syrup. When we asked for more, they said they would charge for extra syrup. We thought it would be a small charge, but were shocked to see the $2.00 charge PER one ounce side. My grilled cheese was delivered with not one but two black hairs on the plate. The floor and table were sticky. We had been there many times over the years, but the whole atmosphere of it had changed so much from the fun penguin place it was before. Place appeared clean. We did not use the restrooms. Decent food but we got breakfast and it's tough to mess up bacon and eggs. I will say $7 for kids pancakes plus $3 for orange juice is a bit much when the 4 tiny pancakes don't fill a 35 pound 5 year old up. You definitely do not get enough food with the kids pancakes. Also the place is newly remodeled which looks nice and is in a perfect location to do some shopping afterward without moving your vehicle. One other thing to note is you must pay to park. read more

A friend and I went to the Penguin Dinner few weekends ago. It was during the off season in Bethany Beach, DE, and the chef and hostess were so nice and accommodating. The chef indicated that anything we see on the menu he would be glad to customize to whatever our palate desired. I asked him about the burgers and he indicated that he uses a couple different cuts of angus beef and mixes them with seasoning. We ordered, and it was the best burger I have ever had. It was large enough for two people served on a brioche bun with bib lettuce, Swiss and mushrooms. Then he came out with samples of his homemade cream of crab soup, which was also "to die for". It is so refreshing to meet food servers that aim to please and bend over backwards to be sure you really enjoy your meal. Can't wait till my next trip down to the beach to go there again. We had several different waitresses who did not communicate with each other and kept bringing the wrong orders. The menu was small for a diner. We went to the diner for dinner. They had just recently renovated and it looks great inside. They are doing a new limited farm to table menu for dinner. We had the filet and crab cakes. The dinner included potatoes and fresh asparagus. Everything was good. You could cut the filet with your fork. The crab cakes were crab and not filler. I went for breakfast with the kids and after seeing the dinner menu, went for date night. Breakfast was delicious, hearty and reasonably priced. Dinner blew me away. Fresh caught seafood, veggies that didn't disappoint, all so reasonably priced. Beyond Gluten friendly. They were really sensitive to the gluten allergies, which was a huge relief. All frier oil is GF. Fried green tomato was inventive, heaping with crab meat, the sauce added brightness, the breading was light, and the tomato was juicy. Calimary was fresh, not frozen, coated nicely, really tender. The bacon on the burger was so thick, with organic, local beef, juicy, delightful. The blackened fish taco was spot on, dressed perfectly, flaky rockfish, delicious slaw, well seasoned. Crab cakes had very little filler, meaty and flavorful. This prices were amazing, budget friendly, with great food. I consider it a gem in Bethany Beach. Go there! read more

Honestly some of the best food I've had in a while. All the food is fresh and the service was amazing. We had a guest with food allergies and the servers were more than happy to check to make sure there was no issues as far as seeds and nuts. It was quick service too. Highly recommend the Bethany burger and Mac and cheese! They are definitely family friendly .. they take your kids drawings and immediately put them into the menus. My family from the Annapolis area came to visit me for my little brother's birthday and we decided to check out one of the local diners since I'm still relatively new to the area. We chose the Penguin Diner because we had heard good things from the locals in the past. To our delight, it was better than we expected. We were greeted and seated right away by one of the servers. She was very helpful during the ordering process, especially with my mom who can be very picky and indecisive. There were 5 of us so we chose a variety of offerings from breakfast foods to various appetizers and entrees. Everything was amazing from the Pancakes to the Biscuits with Gravy to the Towering Cheeseburgers. You really can't go wrong with whatever you choose off of their menu. We walked away very pleased with our experience and plan to go back the next time they visit. I can't recommend this diner enough. Enjoy! read more

This is my first review, but I felt strongly enough about our experience that I decided to post it. We, a family of 4, and another family of 4 are on vacation at Bethany this week, and we decided to have lunch here because of the cute penguin motif. The only table of 8 was taken, so we sat 2 adults at the counter and the rest at a table. When the menus were brought over, an older gentleman (I presume the owner) said that we could order from him at the side counter instead of at the front register. We really appreciated this gesture and went on to get our children situated. When we were ready to order and asked the young man working behind the counter if we could place our order with him, he said in a very rude manner, "You have to order up front". When we explained to him that we were told we could order from the side counter because the older gentleman said we could, he interrupted us and said, "NO, he did NOT tell you that. You have to order up front". First of all, there is a better way of telling people to order up front, such as, "I'm sorry, but we don't take orders here. Could you please go place an order up front". Second of all, you do not tell a customer that they are wrong, and accuse them of pretty much lying. I am giving this place 2 stars because we enjoyed the food and we did appreciate the sentiment of the older gentleman. However, the attitude of this young man is simply unacceptable from a customer service point of view. He needs to drop his self righteous attitude and think about how that would make a customer feel and the consequences of making that kind of impression on the customer while representing that dining establishment. read more

We went again this summer with a party of 7 and something definitely changed from last summer. There was only one other party at the restaurant but it took so long, probably almost an hour, to get our meals. With 3 tired kids this didn't go over well. The waitress came over to say they were out of 3 menu items off their limited menu and the stove was out and the chef would be back soon. I should have taken this as a cue to leave. The crab cakes were average and a pasta / shrimp dish someone in our group got looked like it was swimming in oil. We were taking our friends out so I didn't want to make a big deal of it and neither did the waitress. We have been long time patrons and were completely shocked by the complete 180 degree turn this restaurant took. The kid friendly burger, sandwich, wrap place is no more. Im not sure it should be called penguin diner anymore. Kids loved the "penguin" theme and "diner" does not discribe the new menu at all (the old menu is posted on this website) . My daughter was looking forward to her yearly birthday crabcake sandwich and awesome homemade chips $9.95, but what few choices they had on the dinner menu showed a crab cake dinner with new potatoes and asparagus $20-$28 so we left disappointed. The tip off should have been the white linen tablecloths and napkins we noticed when we first walked in but we were in shock by the complete change in decor. So, no more running off the beach in our beach clothes and flip flops to catch a quick lunch. So sad because it was the only place so close to the beach that the kids loved and still pleased adults with discerning tastes. I guess adults with kids will be stuck going to Grottos across the street if they want to eat indoors. So if you go for dinner, dress up and leave the kids at home. The penguin diner sounded great in a radio commercial I heard yesterday, especially when mentioning their muscle special. I excitedly texted my husband that we should go here sometime, and he surprised me by saying we could go for dinner that night. Not only do we never eat out, maybe only once a year because we're in the "hot dogs in baked beans" struggle. Needless to say, money is pretty tight. But given the fact that we literally only see each other once a week, because of work, and he happened to surprise me by having a Thursday night off, it seemed like a worthwhile occasion for an impromptu date night. Their online menu did not mention the muscle special I'd heard advertised, so I called and asked if it was a current menu item. A young guy told me it was, and when I asked if they'd be open until 10pm, I was told "yes, we are". So I left my house at 8, sat through an hour of traffic, paid the set price of $4.50 for parking, and reached the diner about a minute after 9. A waitress informed me that the Penguin was closed. In shock I mentioned that every single site I pulled up for the diner (while searching for the current menu), had listed 10pm as the closing time. She just said "we lied, sorry". I get it, there's nothing she could do to help us in this case, but to have driven 2 hours round trip for nothing, pay way too much for parking only to leave, and lose all of the time we had to spend together, only to go home without dinner, was beyond disappointing. Our date was totally ruined on the 1 single night we had to do something together, and we didn't even get to sample the food I've read so many terrible reviews about. Maybe you did us a favor. Since everywhere else was closed on the way home, we went to walmart and bought 2lbs of muscles for only $6, and so even with the useless parking spot we paid for, we still made out better than if we'd paid to eat at the diner. My suggestion is that you update your hours to reflect accurate times, because misinformation leaves almost as bad a taste in my mouth as it sounds like some of the reviewed meals have. Don't make people have to hunt for your menu either, if you're having an awesome sounding special that nobody even knows about, it's not doing your business any favors. I give this restaurant my highest accolades for a beach breakfast place. The owners are accommodating to my special dietary request for sugar-free syrup and smaller portions. I can get my full beach breakfast of eggs, bacon, and pancake at about half the calories of a beach breakfast anywhere else. My wife's Hot Tea - think about that, a bag and water - was $3.50!!! I paid less in Hawaii for a Much Better and larger portioned breakfast!! 3 combos a tea, coffee, and juice for $51!! Ridiculous.
