Stopped in for ice cream dessert after dinner with my family. First time here and was unsure what to get. Went with the coffee flavored ice cream on a waffle cone. The flavor was pretty good however I would have preferred a creamier consistency to the ice cream. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ambience is laid back and service was ok.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
Well this actual ice cream is not new to me, however this locatoion I have only been to once before. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This location while positioned very well in downtown as a nice appeal in the food court.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The girl that served us was very nice and her customer service was awesome. I am not sure that I really cared for the flavors that they had available at this location today. I did opt for the flavor I posted, next time I will try going back to the one in Capitola or Scotts Valley. Price point is a bit higher than many other ice cream stops, the company may want to think about that at some point. While i get you need to pay for rent in a higher priced zone, perhaps you can offer something else as well to give additional income, just a thought?
The Penny Ice Creamery is in a perfect location in the State Street Market. Sampled the Verve coffee ice cream and Buttermilk toffee swirl and they were both good, but the buttermilk toffee was so tasty! Had it in a freshly made waffle cone and it was the perfect sweet treat!

The bitter caramel was really good and has a good depth of flavor. Small indoor and outdoor seating. Staff are nice and friendly.

tiny ice cream shop inside the food hall! kids loved the sprinkles because they had little stars in it! $15 for two small scoops which is steep but the flavors are good! I like how they note which flavors have gluten!

I miss being in Santa Cruz. We were blessed w/ Penny's Ice Creamery less than a mile from where we lived. Gavin and I have only ordered dark chocolate w/ marshmallow fluff on top. It's addicting and rich. A sin I don't mind committing because it's one of a kind. For 2 identical orders (waffle cones) came out to $18 something. Definitely not something I can afford to go every week but it is nice to know I can get my fix w/o having to drive to Santa Cruz.
I heard of this food hall but have not been. This was my first time and I was a little upset that I already ate somewhere else. We only came for ice cream. Im glad they allowed samples because I've been to smaller ice cream shops that do not give samples. My toddler picked a cranberry flavor. It was just the right amount of sour flavor. My husband got their afogato. He thought it was ok but he's had one recently at a Turkish spot and nothing has been better than theirs. Overall, I liked the flavors and want to come back in spring to see what is new.

Went in to take a look at their ice creams and immediately became intrigued by their hot apple cider :) The employees were so kind to allow me to sample a few different flavors before I finalized bitter caramel. Their vanilla is different, compared to other vanillas, and is worth a try I think. They also have a yummy coffee toasted almond flavor which I thought tasted like the Mocha Almond Fudge flavor you see in stores. Apparently their signature item is the toasted marshmallow on top of your ice cream, which I would definitely love to try the next time I visit!
The service here is fast and friendly. I ordered the Tahitian vanilla bean ice cream with marshmallow fluff on top. It was the perfect amount of sweetness and was such a good sweet treat to end the day with.

REVOLTING! DO NOT GET ICE CREAM HERE! The most disgusting ice cream we have ever had! We got 3 pints to go because we had to get home asap to to relieve the babysitter. We wasted $40 on chemical crappy tasting ice cream that was ALL THROWN INTO THE SINK FOOD DISPOSAL THAT NIGHT! The vanilla tasted like floral extract/ fake fake chemical taste and less than a 1/4 of that pint was eaten before it was thrown out. The Mint Chip was their Vanilla ice cream with mint extract and chocolate chips so that was thrown out after 1 taste. The Coffee was also their Vanilla ice cream with Coffee extract plus Almond Praline, which also so gross that it was thrown out after 1 taste. Go to Safeway's, DeMartini Orchard, Draeger's Market (Los Altos), Ava's Mkt & Deli in Mt. View, etc...( see places on https://mariannesicecream.com/find-us/ ) to get WAY WAY WAY BETTER authentically flavored Ice Cream if you want a good Mint Chip, Mint Oreo, Coffee Almond Fudge, Mango, Vanilla Bean, Cookies & Cream, Butter Pecan, Pralines & Cream, & Black Raspberry/ Berry.

~$8.50 single scoop on waffle cone. organic (cone and cream - I'm told). Staff was A-1. They were awesome. Energetic, positive, good vibes! Tried 3 samples, settled on the Verve Coffee w/choc almond praline. Scoop was modest. Fair value. Coffee flavor was outstanding! The texture was lighter and less rich. Was in Mountain View when the ice cream craving hit and decided to come try this place. There was no line when we walked in. And the guy that was at the register was very nice and allowed us to try some flavors before ordering. I ended up getting the vanilla, and added the toasted marshmallow on top. read more

Having grown up in Santa Cruz, I have fond memories of the OG Penny and it is a family favorite for sure. So I was ecstatic to learn that Penny had opened a little outpost in DT Los Altos! My husband and I stopped by here a couple weeks ago after dinner at State of Mind and an event at nearby Foothill College. It was almost closing time but the young woman working was friendly and accommodating. We just got a small scoop of salted caramel (you need to try it) and it was the perfect nightcap. Yes, it's pricey (I think we paid ~$8 for a small scoop) but the ingredients are high-quality and you get what you pay for. read more

Last weekend, my aunt took me out for a belated birthday lunch, and we decided to take a drive to Los Altos to enjoy the cold, cloudy weather. Even though it wasn't exactly ice cream weather, we were both craving something sweet and ended up stumbling across Penny Ice Creamery while walking around downtown. It's tucked inside a communal-style market space and operates more like a kiosk than a full storefront. Small spot with about 10 flavors--but they let you sample, which I appreciated. I ended up ordering two scoops in a waffle cone: coffee and vanilla bean. I don't drink coffee, but I liked how the coffee flavor was mild--not too bold or overpowering--which made it perfect for me. I actually wanted to end with it, so I asked them to scoop the coffee first, then top it with vanilla bean. The combo was just right. The vanilla bean was creamy and classic, and it paired well with the lighter coffee flavor. You could tell the ice cream was made with quality ingredients--no weird aftertaste, and it didn't leave me feeling thirsty afterward like some places do. The scoops were generous, which was a nice bonus. The service was great. The staff were friendly, patient, and didn't rush us at all. Glad we got there when we did--right after we sat down, a whole kids' dance troupe rolled in. Would've been a wait for sure. They also had some fun options beyond the basics--I saw the dance group ordering a s'mores-style setup with chocolate and toasted marshmallow fluff on top. They sell a small selection of hot and cold drinks (including Verve Coffee) and some merch. Bonus: they accept Apple Pay. All in all, definitely a 5/5 spot. We love their original store located in Santa Cruz so what a great surprise for us to see this ice cream shop popped up in this shopping plaza. I ordered a mini double scoop of the Fresh Mint Chip and Verve Coffee with Chocolate, and added their famous toasted marshmallow as a topping. The Fresh Mint Chip flavor had a refreshing taste of mint with every bite, very yummy! The Verve Coffee flavor was a bit too strong for me. The big glob of toasted marshmallow topping always enhance any cup of their ice cream and made the overall experience even more enjoyable. read more
Not much for flavors. I guess vegan stuff around here is big. Their "vegan" is using water. Most places would use coconut milk or macadamia milk. My mom got the chocolate which was extremely bitter like they mixed water, cocoa powder and a tiny amount of sugar. Definitely not worth anywhere near $7 for that. Love this location! Free samples and friendly customer service. I appreciate the variety in flavors. Their ice cream tends to be on the sweet side, but you can definitely tell their ingredients are legit. Though their menu is always changing, my favorites include the Pecan Pie, Matcha, and Chai. The Toasted Marshmallow Fluff is a must!!! During the autumn season, they have ice cream pies! Sounds like it'd be a hit at the next Thanksgiving potluck. read more
Okay been to this place a few times and honestly the ice cream is so good. I usually don't like ice cream too much, except for one flavor that is hard to find, so when I come here I just get vanilla. I realize that it sounds boring but it is the freshest, creamiest, and most flavorful vanilla. The workers are always friendly and fast! It's not very large but there are some tables inside and outside. Pro tip: get a draft root beer from State of the Mind and a vanilla from here for the BEST root beer float. read more

Located inside State Street Market, The Penny offers classic and unique ice cream flavors. They use fresh, local, and organic ingredients and is based in Santa Cruz. I got the bourbon persimmon and it was very unique. I didn't think they would mesh well together, but I was wrong. Definitely get the toasted marshmallow fluff on top of your ice cream. Game changer for sure. It just ties everything together. Reminds me of a Baked Alaska. read more

Awee waffle cone with a mini scoop of ice cream ( I chose fresh mint chip) and then this marshmallow fluff that goes on top and gets brûléed!!?!?? After Mother's Day early dinner I randomly chose this location based on Yelp reviews that sound unique. Nice small outdoor area with some expensive restaurants scattered outside of the State Street Market Hall. First time in this quiet neighborhood in Los Altos. The ice cream is from Santa Cruz and is homemade organic from scratch with ingredients from local farmers. Yes it is from the highest quality. The ice cream texture is very light like skim fat free milk. I prefer my ice cream to have a heavier texture. The prices are a little steep for this higher quality ice cream $6.50 for one scoop and I got the full double scoop $9.50. Luckily they allowed me to have tasting samples with their unique flavors. The Verve coffee with almond praline did have the nice medium flavor of ice cream and the texture was on the lighter side. My second sample was the one I liked better as it had a stronger flavor and heavier texture was the chocolate Carmel flavor. So I decided to take 2 normal double scoops of Tahitian Vanilla and Chocolate Carmel. My mom had the Verve Coffee with almond praline flavor one scoop. The ice cream was good, just not my personal preference liking. There was an annoy kid screaming about ice cream where his parents were trying to find a flavor he wanted. This place is connected to the food court in this building. It was a nice palace to try out but I personally won't make my way out here just for this place. , Summer is finally here! Although it's always a good time for ice cream, now it's an extra good time. And what's even better, Penny opened up their Los Altos location so we don't have to drive all the way to Santa Cruz anymore to get their ice cream, which are all made from scratch and with fresh local ingredients. We're usually mint chip ice cream flavor fans, but this was definitely more mint forward that kind of slaps you in the face haha The strawberry sorbet though made us wish we both got our own scoop. They also don't hold back on the toasted marshmallow fluff which we appreciate! The service and everyone was very nice and we like how it has outdoor seating so we can enjoy with a nice breeze. Inside was small but still cute and get your ice cream and go. All the ice cream flavors are fresh and flavorful, and I'm always excited to sample the new seasonal flavors.You also can't go wrong with vanilla in a waffle cone!
