I'm a certified Kansas City BBQ judge and nothing thrills us more than finding a great BBQ joint. Alas, this is not one of them. The $15.50 1/2 order (six 1" - 3" bones) of pork spares were way overcooked, dry, and chewy. The coleslaw was bland. The sauces - spicy hot, Memphis sweet, and Carolina tangy - aren't bad, which is good so you have something to wash down the ribs. The only positive is they had good smoke on them. I needed something other than fish or fusion, or burgers. I had already decided what I wanted. When I stopped in on a Friday it was dead quiet. Um, bad omen? Well, not really. Appearances and all that. Got a take-out beef ribs and mac and cheese with the tangy sauce. Came out hot and stayed hot all the way home. Ribs were really beefy and fall off the bone tender. Wife and I were in Fort Bragg for a few night getaway. Found The Q on night two and came back again the third night. We sampled beef ribs, brisket, pulled pork, baby back ribs, and kielbasa sausage, along with coleslaw, potato salad, and baked beans. Final opinion: The Q serves some of the finest barbecue west of the Mississippi. Do not be discouraged by other reviewers who lament on the owner's children or the length of time it took to receive their order. The dining room does leave a bit to be desired, so we did takeout both nights. The food was hot and fresh after the drive back to the hotel. Meats are expertly cooked over oak and the brisket had a nice smoke ring and perfect bark. It was tender, juicy, and contained amazing flavor. The beef ribs were perhaps the best we've ever had, with rich smoke flavor and delicious bark. Pulled pork was moist and tender, with a nice smoke flavor. Baby backs were fall off the bone tender (not usually an award-winning trait, but the way most people actually prefer to eat ribs). The kielbasa was scored lengthwise to allow the oak to permeate the sausage. The sauces: Hot, sweet, and tangy sauces are offered, and all have unique flavors inspired by southwest or even middle-east cuisine. These are not your ordinary, sugary BBQ sauces. They compliment the quality of smoked meats available on the menu and could have their own separate review. The sides we sampled were simply delicious. The coleslaw was a mild, vinegary variety and was crisp and fresh. Potato salad was fresh and creamy and the potatoes were not over cooked or mushy. The baked beans were reminiscent of Texas-style, with pintos and fresh smoked bacon. For reviewers who complained the food lacked "seasoning", The Q stays true to American/Southern barbecue. The meats do not rely on being overly spiced or salted because they are top quality and barbecued to perfection (as opposed to "smoked" or "grilled"). HOW ABOUT A LITTLE LESS BURNY AND A LITTLE MORE YUM? So a really long drive on a one-lane road finally ended and we reached Fort Bragg a short while later. Somewhat irritated and definitely hungry. We ordered one half plate order of beef ribs ($10) with a side of mac and cheese, and a salad for me ($5). I asked if the dressing was homemade and ordered blue cheese after hearing it was. I love homemade blue cheese. Unless it comes in a container that's been sitting too long and it's all separated looking and watery on top. That's how this arrived. I used one of the containers I was given but it honestly didn't have much flavor so I put BBQ on the rest of my salad. Weird... I know. I don't even like BBQ sauce much. The mac and cheese was good. I liked it but husband didn't. He is more of a Kraft mac kind of guy. He likes creamy cheese. I like homemade mac with the more grainy texture of real melted cheese. I thought this one was delicious. The ribs were just okay. I attend the national rib cook off every year in Reno. For years I spend a day devouring the best rib cookers from around the country. So I know what passes as good ribs and the ones we were served probably wouldn't have gone very far in the competition. for one, they were just slightly too burned. The seasoning had lost its flavor and a burny taste replaced it. It looked like a good, heavy seasoning too. I imagine with salty goodness. But I'll never know. The BBQ sauce didn't do much so we ate the ribs as they were, our mouths filling with disappointment. One of the ribs had a shockingly small amount of meat. I know that this is bound to happen. Not every rib can be hunky with meat, but... it just doesn't seem fair to serve these sometimes. The rest of the ribs were very meaty. They were a little grisly, but I expect that on beef ribs and it didn't bother me. Only the burny taste did. I probably would have gone with three stars but I was really on the fence because of the quality. I decided two-star as I recalled that I asked for my reuseable water container to be filled. They cannot take it and fill it. The girl brought out a disposable cup of water for me. I poured this into my container, but the whole point of reuseable is to reduce waste. At least she could have brought it in a plastic pitcher/glass that could be washed. Restaurants that aren't somewhat conscious about how much waste they generate don't make my heart happy. read more

We were vacationing in Mendocino and needed to grab dinner. Eating in Mendocino was a bit tough since the Yelp reviews scared us away. Instead, we elected to go to this place given the good Yelp reviews. After a short 11 minute scenic drive up Highway 1, you get to Fort Bragg. This place is an order up front, sit where there's room type of deal. As a party of 8 on a Tuesday night, it wasn't hard for us to find a seat. The place was practically empty. We ordered 2 COMBOS and 2 chowders bowls ($5) to share between the lot of us. The COMBOS came with 2 sides and, either Pork Spare Ribs or Meaty Beef Ribs, and 1 or 2 Q "Plates". Q "Plates" include your basic BBQ foods: pork shoulder, beef brisket, kielbasa sausage, shrimp, chicken, grilled veggies, rock fish. ($20.50 for 1 Q "Plate" or $23.50 for 2 Q "Plate") items for your COMBO. It was surprising sufficient due to the fact that some in our party don't eat much. We had lots of different choices, as is suitable for a good Southern BBQ place: SHRIMP ON THE BARBIE--large prawns cleaned and grilled to perfection. I'm a stickler for cleaned, peeled, and non-mushy shrimp. This place delivered. PORK SPARE RIBS--they were OK and oddly tasted a bit like the honey-baked ham you eat during Thanksgiving, so I had mixed feelings about this one. MEATY BEEF RIBS--they were OK as well, nothing special. I prefer my beef a bit more raw, but nothing to complain about. ROASTED CHICKEN--a bit on the dry side, but it was seasoned well and was sufficient. GRILLED VEGETABLE SKEWER--I'm not a veggie fan but all of the veggies--red pepper, zucchini, mushrooms, squash, were well cooked. MAC N CHEESE--definitely not Kraft, nice and thick, topped with cheese sprinkles. It was decent. GARLIC TEXAS TOAST SLICE--hard as a rock and not my cup of tea. They might consider toasting it a bit less, but it was well seasoned with garlic and oil. I don't recommend getting this. CHOWDER--thick and creamy just as I like it. I've had one too many watered down chowder nonsense in the past so this was satisfying. I highly recommend getting this. SAUCES--they had three bottles of sauces for you to try. The best was the Memphis Sweet. I love sugar, so nothing can beat a good honey sweet sauce. The Spicy Hot was all right. But the Caroline Tangy was a bit odd so I didn't touch it again. I think there was a hint of Tabasco and I'm not really a fan of that. Bottom Line: This place is OK. Chowder was decent. Mac and Cheese was pretty good. The meats could be a bit softer and it was different from the Southern BBQ food that I'm used to, but it's worth a shot if you're up near Fort Bragg or Mendocino. read more

The Q is one of the first dining places you spot on Highway 1 when you exit highway 20 going north. It's not even in the main part of Fort Bragg, but if you're hungry for barbecue, you stop. It looks like they added an extension to the main part of the building, since the front door with the house number is inside the restaurant. The order counter is in the back left side, and a large menu of barbecue items hangs above I selected the half order of beef brisket with fries as my side ($12) and a Pepsi (1.30) After 15 minutes the person who took my order delivered the food. Quite a lot of brisket for the money, it was very tender and tasty. The fries were equally good, they sort of melt in your mouth, and the Pepsi was brought in a can . They had three portable heaters going to keep everybody warm. The roof in the add on section has small holes in it that may cause you to get wet if it rains. read more

Do NOT leave Fort Bragg without stopping at The Q. I ordered the blackened rockfish and it was absolutely the best fish and chips dish I have ever had. Everyone surrounding me at my table agreed. The slaw was just blah, but the mac and cheese was thick, creamy, and even a little spicy. You order at the front desk and they deliver it to you. The service was friendly and fast. They have a decent beer selection and it's reasonably priced. They are very accommodating for large groups and it's easy to split tabs because everything is ordered separately. It's a quaint little shack with boar heads and cow skulls hanging on the wall, with about 12 tables in a covered, enclosed patio with heaters, and 4-5 tables inside by the counter. They were perfectly tender and the flavors in the rub are just right to accent the taste of the meat without covering it up. Although the ribs don't need any sauce the tangy sauce is also excellent. The coleslaw is interesting but in a good way. It has a distinctly garlicky flavor which is something I had never thought of for coleslaw but it really works. The second time I had the prime rib special. It was perfectly seasoned and not over cooked. The mashed potatoes and gravy were expertly prepared classics and the sautéed vegetables complemented the meal perfectly. We found this gem while on vacation in Fort Bragg. We went here several times because the food was so fresh and tasteful. The food was cooked to perfection - I can't recall when I have had such a variety of vegetables cooked so well. Wow. Split a full rack of spare ribs with my young son, who is a decent food critic. He kept asking for "just one more rib" and promised he would not get addicted. Not sure about the recent reviews, but the ribs were excellent. Moist, just the right amount of smoke, and falling off the bone. Not the absolute best I've ever had, but still quite good. Whatever problems were here in the past seem to have been handled. Smoked pork tamales were also quite good. Chili and sweet beans were tasty. A bit on the soupy side, but I actually prefer them that way. Tri-tip sandwich was above average, but needs some moisture, maybe more marbling. Cornbread needs work. I overheard a customer talking with the owner, who is very clearly committed to consistency and quality.
