Split a full rack of spare ribs with my young son, who is a decent food critic. He kept asking for "just one more rib" and promised he would not get addicted. Not sure about the recent reviews, but the ribs were excellent. Moist, just the right amount of smoke, and falling off the bone. Not the absolute best I've ever had, but still quite good. Whatever problems were here in the past seem to have been handled. Smoked pork tamales were also quite good. Chili and sweet beans were tasty. A bit on the soupy side, but I actually prefer them that way. Tri-tip sandwich was above average, but needs some moisture, maybe more marbling. Cornbread needs work. I overheard a customer talking with the owner, who is very clearly committed to consistency and quality. We will definitely be back next time we are in town to get more of these addictive smoky moist ribs and sample other items on the menu. read more

Very good overall! The owner was very nice, and seems to be working very hard in such a hard time (Covid 19). My husband ordered the rib basket with beans and corn bread. All of his items were absolutely delicious! I ordered the chicken Q plate with slaw and potato salad. LOVED the potato salad, the slaw was quite different, had no mayo, but was good. The chicken was very bland! I ate what I could with lots of sauce (sweet and tangy), but once I ran out of sauce I threw away the rest. This is why I only gave it 4 stars. The best and I think the only barbecue place in Fort Bragg, at least the only one I could find. You order first, pay, and then they'll bring out your food. I was able to split the combo with one other person, and I felt satisfied. All in all, the quality of the BBQ wasn't the greatest I had, but for the price, my order came with a ton of variety, was relatively quick, and service was great. This review is from dinner on a Saturday night in September. Yeah, I've been thinking about it for that long. At the time, my words were: "What a uniquely unpleasant experience." Now, I would say, "What sacrifices must be made for granola." That's because when I told my Mendo friends about the experience, they said, "Well, the owners are focused on their granola business in Sonoma now, so that's what happens." But, back to that Saturday night in September. My friend and I were headed from Mendo to Fort Bragg for an Italian dinner, when we saw The Q up ahead on the right. My friend spontaneously asked: BBQ? Sure. So, we pulled in. It was 8:30pm. I should probably put in a screenshot here because the web site says: May-October 11am until at least 9pm. One or two tables were occupied when my friend and I ordered. I got the pork shoulder. The ordering experience with the young woman at the counter was OK. She was a bit preoccupied with a manual task, but it was no biggie, or didn't seem so at the time. When my plate arrived at the table. I was hungry and started eating. The meat was cool and a little tough. I was hungry and was going to power through, but after a few more bites, my friend asked me about the meal. I expressed what I just wrote above. She said, that doesn't look like pork shoulder. Nah, I said. You should send it back. OK. So, we get the young woman's attention. I explain that the meat is cold and tough and not what I ordered. She had no idea what to do. I would think the first thing would be to take the wrong order BACK and bring the customer what he ordered. But no, first she explains that in the evening the brisket is often cold and tough. Honestly? Seriously? That was good of her to offer an honest appraisal, but better yet would have been to not serve it. SO, here's the really interesting thing. I had never ordered it. So, was it just some garbage to try to pawn off on me? I didn't say that though, I simply reminded her that I had ordered the pork shoulder. I hadn't ordered the beef. She went to the counter to get the receipt. Yep, there plain as day was the detail that showed I had ordered the pork shoulder. What do you think happens next? Perhaps she would take the cold, tough meat away and return with what I had ordered? No. She asks me if I live in the area. I can't believe this calm verbal exchange has gone into outer space. No, I reply. Looking somewhat puzzled, I'm sure. Well, if you lived in the area, I could give you something off your next order. Could you just bring me what I ordered? She takes the cold, tough beef away. Next, a dark-haired young man comes out of the kitchen and approaches the table. Carrying pork shoulder? No. He's there to argue. But there is nothing to argue. The receipt was clear. He finally goes away. The young woman brings me a plate of pulled pork. Still not what I ordered, but as I said at the outset, I was hungry. My friend and I tried to ignore the loud noises made as the dark-haired young man loudly dragged out clanking empty bottles right behind my friend's chair. It was Saturday night. Was the staff was in a rush to get out of work? It might have been just past 9 pm by then. The pulled pork was decent. It was served at an average warm temperature. It's not something I would have ordered that night. This dinner at The Q was without a doubt, a uniquely unpleasant experience. Will I try Beaujolais Granola? Maybe yes, maybe no. I'm not that big of a granola fan, and I doubt it could make up for the way that The Q meal suffered from inadequate attention. read more

My wife and I are big BBQ fans and love to try new places when we can. Was in town and stopped by to get some ribs. The ribs were alright at best. Had a decent smoky flavor, but tasted as if it was cooked yesterday and reheated under a heat lamp. Very dry. The beans had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. Had to add add the BBQ sauce to call it a side order. Speaking of the sauce, they really should try to actually give you to-go sauce. We received about ketchup packets worth. The salad wasn't bad. But the dressing situation rivaled the BBQ sauce. However, the dressing was half the amount as the sauce. Extremely stingy in that department. Sadly, we won't be back. read more

A wonderful addition to this part of the world. Even though they were newly-opened and slammed, the order went in and the food came out efficiently, and with a smile. (They also kept up with the bussing, which is a good sign that the front office is being well run.) The BBQ itself was great: The brisket was tender and flavorful, and the sauces were complex and interesting. (And a good range of spiciness, too.) When my boyfriend and I arrived in the quaint town of Mendocino, we would never have guessed to find a Barbecue place amongst all the organic, local, and fish filled places. We were craving barbecue after we walked into a meat smoking place in Fort Bragg we thought was a restaurant... Oops. I ALWAYS go to Yelp when I'm not sure where to go for dinner... And this place did NOT disappoint. After searching through the town of Mendo, we decided we didn't want to go through the hassle of a fancy place, and turned to yelp. After finding the Q, we headed out, stomachs craving the sweet taste of barbecue. The joint is located on the side of the main road going through Fort Bragg, something my boyfriend said reminded him of an authentic roadhouse in Texas. We arrived at 7:50PM and the closing time on Yelp says they're open until 9 (They're actually open until 8... We felt pretty bad) but they made us our food anyways-without being angry or showing us the door. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and fries (they give you a HUGE basket...) They were so tasty but the sandwich was just enough to send me into a seriously tasty food coma. My boyfriend ordered the wild boar bacon cheese burger with a side of their Mac-n-cheese which all the reviews made sound so amazing-and it was. We are BBQ lovers and was excited to see a BBQ joint during our vacation. It was a disheartening sight to see only 2 other groups dining during dinner time on a Saturday night.... however we were hopeful food would still be cooked fresh. We had the baby back ribs, beef brisket, and pulled pork. The ribs looked charred black and dry, and tasted the exact same, even the BBQ sauce could not rescue this dish. The brisket was a bit dry but tasted pretty good smothered in BBQ sauce. Pulled pork was bland and appeared as it had been pulled out of a pot of hot water, the serving dish was running with excess water. Well, the absolute best food in Fort Bragg and Tara, cashier, made our visit memorable. Seriously, before I get into the actual review of the food, Tara performed the best customer service I have seen in a long time and I work in the customer service industry. Don't lose Tara, give her a bonus or a raise, she creates return business. I will be back to eat there because of her customer service, well and for the delicious food, hat off to the cook. Great taste. Now to the review of the food. There were 4 of us and ordered 3 boar burgers, brisket, onion rings, fries, baked beans, bread pudding, corn bread, and a sampler platter of oysters. Btw manager and owner, Tara was so fun talking to, we ended up ordering two of your hats. So we decided to eat our food at home and I wish we didn't because we would bought something else, so good. The coleslaw on the boar burgers were outstanding. I don't like oysters but my wife said they were the best she ever ate. Good food. Shitty service. They have a bell at the counter and don't come to it. Waited over an hour for a cup of soup and oysters. Everyone else in my party got their food and mine never showed. When I asked for an update (my party had finished eating for 30 minutes by now), they said they're opening the oysters now. Waited another 15 minutes, asked again, said they're opening the oysters now and mine took so long because they go in order of tickets (member of my party ordered corn bread in the mean time and was served). I asked for a cup of soup to go and a refund. Wouldn't budge. I asked for the manager and he refused to come out. Hid in the kitchen and spoke to other employee through the doorway and claimed "needed to work on these tickets". She Refunded but gave me nothing to compensate for my hour and a half wait. Would have appreciated more of an up front warning if oysters really would take that long and at least my soup in the meantime. No warning for the long wait. They said they don't look ahead at tickets. You'll be waiting for a long time. Don't really know what they're doing though because food took forever and bathroom smells like pee. read more

This place may have been good at one point, but I can't say anything good about it other than I enjoyed the man singing in Spanish. Reminds me of home. While they were "cooking" my food I heard a guy in the back say "oh sh*t, oh well, sh*t happens right?" Yes, it could've been about anything, but when you're the only person in the place it definitely makes you feel uneasy about what exactly just happened. Especially when they're "cooking" your food. Heard them microwaving food while I was waiting. Who know what exactly. My pulled pork sandwich was ok, fries were over cooked and not too appetizing. The smoky flavor of the pork was pretty good. Yum! Came here for dinner tonight and loved that it was a 2 minute walk from our hotel. The two of us split a baby back rib combo with BBQ shrimp, beef brisket, Mac and cheese, and onion rings. The ribs were juicy and had a nice smokey flavor. They also had three different BBQ sauces on the table - sweet, hot, and sour. The shrimp was grilled on a skewer with a sweet, chili glaze - yum! We thought parts of the brisket were a little charred, but most of it was still tender. The Mac and cheese and onion rings were also delicious! The fresh squeezed lemonade was also very good and only $1.30 for a large cup! The line to order was a little slow, but it seems like they're working on expanding the restaurant. Do not just drive by this place! We unashamedly had fantastic lunches three days in a row during our Ft Bragg visit. After our last lunch we finally had filled ourselves so ridiculously that we couldn't even eat dinner. That's saying something. The service was friendly and fast. We were enthusiastically coached while making our choices and greatly appreciated it! During our visits we tried the Baby Back Ribs (dry rub style with a choice of 3 sauces provided), the Grilled Salmon, Rock Cod Sandwich, Boar Burger, Beef Brisket ... whew, exhausting to think about and type.Grilled Oysters are phenomenal, not overcooked - with 4 sauce/topping choices. Our favorite was Garlic and Herb. Not a flaw with a single preparation. But wait, there is (of course), more ... the sides. Mac and Cheese with a touch of parmesan - nutty and not a bit of fake cheese to be found, Onion Rings, French Fries, Texas Toast, Chili Beans, Slaw - even a Caeser Salad the size of my head - everything to round out a BBQ meal is available here. We could not have been happier to have found this treasure. Our only regret is not getting to try the desserts, but hey, there's next time! read more

This place was so awesome and so cheap!!! My boyfriend and I ordered the two meat combo with baby back ribs. He is 6'4 and it is rare that we can share a meal and both leave full. The ribs literally fell off the bone the moment we tried to pull them apart. They were some of the best ribs I have ever had. We were going to order the beef ribs but they said they were out until the next day which we think must be worth the wait. We also ordered the brisket and the pulled pork. The brisket was so tender and the pork melted in your mouth. We also loved all the sauces. We thought the spicy could be a little hotter but it was still good. I really liked the Carolina sauce. For sides we ordered fries and Mac and cheese. Both were amazing! The fries were super crispy. We loved everything and wished we could come back more often! Order the half 8oz pork shoulder, spicy sauce, with Mac n cheese $11 plus tax. A bit dry and overdone, weak taste in the bark and thin smoke ring (1/4 inch pink)was disappointing. With the spicy sauce(mild spicy at best) was decent to add moisture and flavor. Mac n cheese was a bit foul, over done pasta and the "breading" soggy mess, again the spicy sauce dumped on made it a bit better, get the fries or onions rings. BBQ place should have a overwhelming smokey atmosphere smelled from blocks away, which this place does not. Average at best, may try the fries and pork ribs but hesitant to return. read more

Also, for a place that specialized in barbecue, the brisket was surprisingly dry and tough. The service was slow. And, when the food finally arrived, the order was mixed up. It was the perfect amount of food for the two of us. The baby back ribs peeled right off the bone and the sauces were each unique and delicious. The chicken was moist and flavorful. The Mac and cheese had a perfect homemade taste, creamy and gooey with pasta that wasn't mushy. We also tried the fries, potato salad and bbq beans. My least favorite item was the potato salad only because it wasn't the type I like, it was an herbed mustard heavy version, while I prefer a classic picnic style with hard boiled eggs. More than a bit expensive for what is basically an old-fashioned drive-in. Almost $30 for two people and one of us had water. We each had what amounted to a half-order, one of pork ribs (5 small ribs) and the other had a shrimp stick (6 large shrimp). Each also had a mid-sized cup of beans to go with it. That's the bad - the good is the food. So long as you don't mind seriously overpaying, the food was pretty good. Now, good bbq sauce can go a long way to making even mediocre food taste good. I'm not saying this was mediocre - like I said, it was good. Just really can't get over paying $30 to sit on metal chairs with no door and bugs flying around. It is a drive in, really. read more

Well, I was wrong - they didn't close. Since my last review, I have been back several times. Hoping, I guess, that things would change. They didn't. The sandwiches are still served on cold buns. The ambiance hasn't changed at all and the metal chairs are still pretty uncomfortable as you sit in the portable dining room listening to traffic speed by about 10 feet away. However, I do like the baby back ribs TO GO. The ribs are tender and flavorful, even without sauce. Be aware that the later you order, the bigger meat portion you'll get. Still pretty expensive though. Two half-orders of ribs with one side each costs $32 and two full orders of ribs with two sides each is $46. Still not my favorite eatery, but it's literally the only barbecue place on the coast. Once in a while, you've just got to have it, so I'll keep going back. The Q is right off the road in what looks like an old Dairy Queen. It is pretty sweet that there is BBQ in Fort Bragg. I was impressed with the sauces on the table to accompany the bbq meats and sandos. I had the blackened fish sando and it was tasty. I actually didn't get any of the bbq but it smelled good. Does that count? Probably not. SO this is not a review for the meats. I would skip the chowder unless you like super creamy chowder with bacon. Don't get me wrong bacon is everyones friend. In this case the cream takes the over and the bacon is lost. Can you imagine a dish where you can't taste the bacon. Well try.....Yup that is what this was creamy clam chowder with lots of cream.
