This is a cute, cozy restaurant. We were passing through town and decided to stop; so glad we did! The staff is friendly and the food is absolutely delicious!! We started with the mozzarella wedges and marinara; also had yummy bread with olive oil and roasted garlic. For dinner my son had chicken fettuccini Alfredo. My other son had a bacon cheeseburger. My husband had the Pollo Genevese - delicious! Cooked perfectly and the sauce was delicious. I had the Pollo Tres Modos-absolutely delicious! Great food, very cute ambience inside and the customer service is great! Waitstaff and bartenders are always friendly and wanting to make sure you are happy and taken care of. We stopped here Friday 8/23/19 after a day at the Saratoga races. We have been wanting to visit here for awhile. Our last visit had to be 12+ years ago. There has been other restaurants at this location - Red's Seafoood & The Elms. The Gleasons have made it The Ripe Tomato since around 1998. Well it was as good as we remembered. We were seated in the south dining room. Our server was Amanda. We ordered our drinks and rehashed our wins & losses at the races. One exacta winner equals one celebratory dinner. First came the Calamari - $10.95 Monterey squid seasoned with fresh herbs, lightly floured and fried to a golden perfection. Served with a zesty marinara sauce and remoulade. Portuguese style add $1.00. Of course we kicked up a notch and ordered it Portuguese style - piquante! My bride had the Yankee Pot Roast ($18.95). She really likes pot roast and makes an outstanding one herself. It was the real deal and as good as her own. I had the Pollo Genovese ($18.95) Pan seared panko encrusted chicken breast medallions stacked with crispy Prosciutto and mozzarella cheese. Baked golden and finished with artichoke hearts and a delicious lemon caper white wine butter sauce. Accompanied by a side of angel hair pasta with marinara. Excellently prepared, served hot. After eating all the calamari I only put a small dent into this overly generous portion and took it to go. And enjoyed it again the next day. The Ripe Tomato is an independently owned by the Gleason family and continues to be a favorite with locals and those from out of town for the Saratoga racing season. Only 24 entrees on the menu but they are all proven favorites. Dinner for two w/ two wines, tax, & tip was $83.40 - a very good value = a very good exacta win. Order was taken in detail and and Linzee went beyond to make certain they were as requested. Restaurant was very busy and quality of service nor food were compromised!! We ordered the bruschetta (not your typical version, 1000 times better!!) They weren't shy nor cheap with the toppings! Be certain to use your fork to eat it!! It was loaded high with tomato, capers, artichoke hearts, black olives and fresh basil, very full of awesomeness! Shortly after our dinners followed and were perfect to detail as well! My husband ordered the Penne Alfresco, I sampled it and it's the best we've ever had! Pasta was al dente, fresh perfectly cooked vegetables and a very tasty base and not soaking/dripping in oil & butter like other restaurants!! My order Eggplant Parmigiana was several thinly sliced breaded eggplant and lightly (not drowning) accompanied with marinara sauce and mozzarella. The linguine again al dente and a scoop of marinara!! We have enough leftovers to feed our young male adult at home for a meal! I knew I wanted fish, and the Spicy Habbock Pomodora was perfect. It was cooked well. Oh! Another best part? They bring you a plate with roasted garlic with salt and black pepper so you can pour olive oil on the plate. Yes, you have a bottle of olive oil on your table. Our first time here after living in the area for 6 years. We've driven past it dozens of times but never stopped. We went with two other couples (from out of town) and nobody was disappointed. The ambiance is pretty dated but don't let that deter you. Apps were great, main courses were great, and they had a beer and wine special. One word. Excellent! I'm in the area for a business trip and found this restaurant on yelp. Luckily, I came in on a Friday and enjoyed the lobster roll lunch special. It was superb. It was nicely filled with good chunks of lobster meat, lightly sauced, and yummy crispy fries and coleslaw. It's a very nice restaurant with history on the walls. Everyone was super friendly. I have been eating here for over 30 years! It's quaint, clean & inviting, whether you are on a quiet date night or having a family celebration. I've celebrated all my 4 adult children's most pivotal moments here for all of them, all of their lives Communions, confirmations, sweet 16, 18th birthday, moms dad's grandparents birthdays, graduations,(I've utilized that great little private room at least 20 times!)The service is impeccable & the food is always exactly the same "perfect!". The best tasting comfort foods with the absolutely best quality of products & ingredients. This is coming from someone who is extremely picky about freshness, quality meat products & healthy. I've literally NEVER had a bad meal here not once not ever & mind you there's so many delicious things on the menu I never oder the same thing. My oldest son(34 now)worked there as his first job at 14 for many years and always told us they amazingly keep everything so clean & sanitary though it's always so busy. I literally go here almost every month if not every week for decades now. It's my favorite place in the 12020 zip code, (Malta & Ballston Spa)!They are also one of the few places to NOT stick it to their customers & instead make less profit as to not raise their prices hardly at all through Covid & still now (everyone in Saratoga County has drastically raised prices on every single item & drink in their establishments)though as they are paying A lot more for their products & ingredients like everyone else, but this place instead has taken the hit in their own pockets. There are some things about The Ripe Tomato that I like very much. But when it came to the end of my meal, it felt to me that the whole was just a tad short of the sum of its parts. I really appreciate the amount of homemade items they serve, and they should by all means tout that. It even includes the iced tea and all their salad dressings, and I'm sure those delicious-looking desserts on the cart. I'm sure it also included the warm, dense, bread and the roasted garlic cloves in the EVOO which accompanied it. Don't fill up on that. When choosing between soup and a salad with your meal, if you like today's soup, you should go for it. Today's soup, a creamy roasted red pepper, was thick and delicious. My salad, on the other hand, was iceberg lettuce with shredded carrot, a couple of rings of red onion, and a single cherry tomato (remind me again, what is the name of this place?). Its only redeeming factor was the bleu cheese dressing (delicious but thin). The lack of tomato in my salad was more than compensated in the bruchetta. But it was not quite what I expected. The toast was thick, the tomatoes were right-out-of-the-refrigerator cold, and the cheese was obviously shredded out of the Zyliss. The entrees were, again, mixed. The meatball lasagna was great. My chicken Francaise was both halves of a whole breast, about 1" thick each, coated in a heavy pancake-y batter, served with some grilled seasoned shrimp. The chicken was slightly overdone, moving from juicy towards slightly chewy. It was served on a garlicky spinach, of which I would have loved more. The angel hair pasta was served on the side. It was also homemade, but it appeared to have been under a heat lamp for a bit while everything else was bring prepared; it was dry, bland, and slightly chewy. I had to dump the remaining EVOO and garlic cloves onto it to give it any flavor. The thing is, the portions were generous, but chicken Francaise is supposed to have a more delicate quality - this was filling. Also, it was lacking in the lemon sauce which is supposed to accompany it. My dinner was the prix fixe special of the day, which includes, besides your soup or salad, an appetizer (today the bruchetta) and a dessert, which for me was an apple cinnamon bread pudding. This was, again, homemade, including the whipped cream which had a hint of vanilla, perhaps some of the best whipped cream I have ever had. It was also served with a heavy, sweet, caramel sauce. That made it too sweet for me, but if you have a sweet tooth, you will love it. The decor is interesting. Many of the tables have brightly colored chairs, in solid red, yellow, green, or blue, sometimes a mix at one table. If you have Feng Shui issues, get a booth. I have no complaints at all about the service - attentive, friendly, informative. If you like hearty portions, you will enjoy Ripe Tomato. My feeling is that, at least for me, the entrees are going to be a bit hit or miss. You may want to try a variety of entrees before making a final decision; I intend to. read more

Went here based off of the reviews, and because it was close to where we staying. Place was cute and charming, though AC was cranked all the way and I was freezing in shorts. We ordered the tostizza as an app and it was quite good (the only reason they got a 2). We both ordered their special $5 wine glass (her red and me white)... It tasted like a $5 wine. I got chicken Parm, girlfriend got crab ravioli. Flavours weren't great on either. Her portion was minuscule, mine was gargantuan, though at 20$ for an entree id rather have had quality over quantity. Both of us left pretty disappointed. On the flip side, service was excellent and server were quite friendly. Atmosphere was great, and based on the other reviews maybe we were just unlucky (went on an off night Wednesday at 730 instead of a weekend?). That all being said I wouldn't go back, or recommend this to others unless they had no options. I wouldn't tell people to avoid the Ripe Tomato- it wasn't inedible by any means- I just wouldn't suggest it. I'd give this joint a solid 2. read more

This was my second time here. I have always heard of mixed reviews on this place. There is always a ton of cars in the parking but no one can really judge on that because there is always a butt load of cars in Olive Garden parking lot and their food and service is terrible. Came on a Thursday night and the place wasn't that packed at all. We took a booth in the bar section. Not a bad spot considering it was a Thursday night and the bar wasn't full or loud. What was annoying was there was little nats flying around while we were eating, sort of gross. Lucky, none landed on my food. I was torned between the house special pork schnitzel and chicken piccata, both sounded really good. I ended up ordering the chicken dish served with a side of pasta. Other dishes ordered was, chicken parm and yankee pot roast. All dinners were served with a side salad. So the salads came out and I ordered my with their house balsamic dressing. A little on the thicker side then what I am used to but I was a fan of it. Also the warm bread and roasted garlic in oil they serve is on the money. Just make sure you and your dinner partners eat the garlic because that's all your breath will smell like for the rest of the night. Also what is cool here is they offer a smaller portion dinner and a normal portion dinner. Entrees came out and I ordered the smaller entree of the chicken and I was worried about not have enough food being the small portion, well I was wrong. I had 4 decent sizes of chicken in a lemon, mushroom sauce. For those people that like a sweet dinner you would love this! The chicken parm was huge but ok, and the pot roast looked good. We were too full for dessert so we skipped it but next time I will have to get a piece of coconut cream pie to bring home. read more

The food was good, but not enough to have leftovers. I had the pot roast with mashed potatoes. I've tasted better potatoes, but it wasn't bad. The pot roast tasted very good and tender. The waitress was pleasant, but I noticed she didn't give me any bread, (or rolls), like I saw on other tables when I walked in. The waitress said they only give bread for dinner. (It's the same menu). She did say they had dinner rolls available. Why did I have to pull teeth to get it and why did she not consider rolls and bread as the same thing? My hubby had a hamburger which he said was good, but not the best. It was on the skinny side. We will not be going back there as it just was not good enough as restaurants go. read more

Cute little dinner spot in Ballston Spa. My boyfriend and I went to celebrate our anniversary. The atmosphere was romantic casual. It was a little loud, but we had a private booth and were not too bothered by it. Service was great! We walked right in and our table was ready (we had made reservations). Our waitress what very attentive and professional. We only waited for our food for 20 minutes and our water glasses were kept full. Very generous portions for a fair price. I got the cedar salmon and my boyfriend got the pollo genovese. We were both happy and satisfied with the presentation and taste. We would go back. It has a dated decor, but as the sun goes down the minimally lighted atmosphere is really charming, comfortable and inviting. The table had lighted candles and bread baskets. To go with the bread was a garlic whipped butter and a plate of roasted garlic with olive oil to dip in. To start the meal I ordered the shrimp and scallop bisque. It came in a proper red sauce, and was quite tasty. It had many shrimp and scallop pieces, but not so many that it overwhelmed the balance. The taste was easily comparable to some of the better New England bisque that I've had. I ordered the Yankee Pot Roast. It was very good. So good in fact, that I found myself comparing it to the way grandma used to make it. It came with big meaty pieces and bit big cuts of fresh carrots, all in a roast gravy that was heavy, thick, and very delicious . Accompanying the dish was a side of mashed potatoes. These were real mashed potatoes made from whole potatoes. I again compared this to how grandma used to make it. I had three friends with me who all ordered steak of various degrees of finish, a medium rare, a medium well, and a well done. Another friend ordered chicken Parmesan pasta. All four were very satisfied and had no complaints with their selections. For desert we asked to see the desert menu and to our surprise the waitress rolled out cart of deserts to look at. The cart had a display of all the deserts, but when you ordered they came fresh from the back. I ordered the Oreo mousse and a got a large plate of chocolate mousse covered with cream and Oreo crumbles. the bottom of the mousse was thick crust of crushed Oreo crumbs. Chilled and tasty. Certainly not a light desert. My buddies got the tiramisu, it was probably a six inches by three inches by three inches slice of deliciousness ready to be eaten! Delicious and superb. with excellent wait staff. Of the eight of us who were there not a once had a single complaint about anything. We visited here during the height of racing season and found the service and food to be first rate. We showed up without a reservation and learned later that they do take reservations. They were able to seat us at a booth by the window and the pacing of the service was perfect. We were able to finish our salads before our pot roast (small portion) was given to us. Not sure how anyone could eat a regular size portion. In fact, it was so much food, we did not have room for the bread pudding. We will definitely be back. read more
