My last experience at the Roost was on Park Ave. here in town. I and others really enjoyed it. Here are the reasons why: Abundance of delicious breakfast food, reasonable prices, and timely. Fast forward to new Roost: Not AS good, rather expensive and smaller (much smaller) portions. My party and I ordered bacon eggs and hashbrowns...it took almost 45 minutes to arrive at the table. Not special, not extra delicious either. Bill was $53.00 / 2 ppl. I wanted to faint...oh, that was with 2 black coffees, also. I support the business because I like the owner, Linda. In days gone by, her Papa Larry (Rest in peace) treated us with Pat and Larry's steakhouse. Good people!!! I WILL be back...just not soon. Local restaurant at Chico. Breakfast specials very reasonable. Regular dinner fare. Plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. The place was easy to find and they do have a private parking lot with plenty of space. This is right across the street for a gas station, so if you are visiting it makes getting up and going, with both tanks full, easier. We only had breakfast and the food was average. Staff was very attentive, responsive and friendly. I did have two scrambled eggs and half a waffle for $6.99 (price as of June 2019) which was part of the breakfast specials. read more

They have a really obnoxious and transphobic sign on the bathroom so if this bothers you then don't waste your money here like I did. Annoyingly, I didn't see it until after we ate our food (which was just okay by the way). My husband's coffee came out cold and the hollandaise on the benedict was broken. I had read that the malt waffle is "incredible" but it was nothing special. The hash browns come out of a box. I know this because we sat where we had a view into the kitchen and we saw the cartons. We waited a long time to get our food and we saw the table next to us get their food before us even though we ordered first. They were a party of two but so were we, so it's not like we had more people at our table. They ordered full breakfasts as well. read more

My server, Samantha, was excellent; but the food was a different matter entirely. When this restaurant was on Park Avenue, years ago, it had excellent cooks who made food that was a cut above the usual mediocre diner fare, and they charged several dollars more than the other diners. The premium prices were worth it, at that time. At some point after the restaurant moved to Main Street, the cooks were different, probably the ownership changed, and the quality of the food went quite seriously downhill; but they still charge premium prices as if the restaurant was the old Roost. My french dip sandwich with extra meat and salad on the plate cost $25.98, not including tax or tip. It was absolutely dreadful. Just awful. Tough, cheap beef, microwaved until it was dry. I could not finish anything on my plate. Even my coffee was fourth rate. A bad experience, overall. If you are willing to eat bad diner fare prepared by cooks who don't know how to make appetizing food, there are several inexpensive diners, including one just two blocks down Main Street, that can do that for you for a lot less money. This is one of my favorite places to eat breakfast and well worth the 70 mile drive from Redding to Chico. I have had cravings for their ham and asparagus Benedict with potato pancake so I was excited when the husband suggested we head that way. I'm so glad that I took the time to read the specials and try the crab Benedict. OMG! It was sooooo delicious and had a very generous portion of fresh crab. It was heavenly. Seriously. My taste buds were singing blissfully like a choir of angels. I wish I had a picture to share but I dove in head first and it was too good to pause and pull out a phone. Stopped in yesterday for brunch with a friend. I have always given this place a definite thought everytime that i'm across the street standing at the gas pump. So yesterday morning was the day to give it a try! I scanned the menu and decided on the Monte Cristo. My friend had wanted to order a panini but the server had let us know that doesn't start until 11am. On the front of the menu it is advertised as "We Serve Breakfast & Lunch All Day". I actually think that is word for word listed right on the front under the hours. So apparently they don't? Or maybe that day the panini press wasn't operating to standard lol. But nonetheless she decided on a burger instead. Both of our meals were out in a short amount of time and she kept regularly refilling my friends coffee which she appreciated. I guess mine was supposed to come with some jam or jelly type thing to dip the sandwhich into which I didn't even realize until she mentioned she had forgot it. I told her not to worry about it and continued eating. The place is plenty spacious, very CLEAN and tidy and i didn't think the prices were overly expensive. Congratulations on your new move roost Café you could see a lot of locals wanna get to know you and hang out. You need a little tiny sign even if it's a hand written posted saying enter the store. I think that the hostess should not for one second be looking at a computer or looking at their cell phone or in conference but needs to be swinging around connecting with each table communicating with the servers communicating with the kitchen and creating an atmosphere of we are all going to be taken care of you our eyes are open every minute this is a good old fashion café you can count on when it's time to pay your check we can see that you're done with your coffee your pile and your plates and your checks ready but what I saw is everybody was doing triple duty on top of one another and it was taking time from everybody the kitchen was doing their best to make beautiful plates that were clean and serve well and not over greasy and very nice but there needs to be like a people waiter waitress manager hostess all rolled up in one who's constantly got the coffee cup and the prattle and willing to take the checks and kind of acting like an owner word I definitely saw that there was a lot of work but the waiters and waitresses who are totally willing to do the right thing or having to do everything three times and overlapping one another that means that that greeter at that little table needs to develop a system of EYE CONTACT communication I saw myself looking AROUND to get my check paid... for several minutes . I saw a table of four people who needed something but being that the servers were pretty much engaged and I think having to wait for the food wait for this I just think everybody needs to be on the floor buzzing around as busy as a bee and there needs to be something pulling it together so you don't lose any new clients I am going to erase this post in a couple days it's not meant to be a criticism it's my way of reaching out and saying you have a place that is worthy and it is needed but dingdong unfortunately you still have to pay for parking and you have a Lotta old fogeys and then a lot of new fogeys like me who want to check this place out and maybe start going there instead of MT you know what I'm talking about as I said I felt the waiters and waitresses were trying their best but there was definitely an issue with the "whole restaurant being taken care of ' and all the movement and entry and exit and paying and special orders and I know you can do it. I just wanna suggest you guys go up to my favorite café which is Jack's hilltop Café or maybe it's Hilltop Jack's up in Magalia and they get really busy and they have really great food which I kind of think there's hopefully going to be some good similarities with their food but I want you to go up there and see how is it that the wait staff manages to make everything flow DEAR Owner ROOST Café I am on your side you guys have a lot going on I know that it's hard to keep a WAIT STAFF employee if they really are dependent on tips and there's really not regular customers right now ( and likely they are expected to split their tips up ) but I'm hoping you get that busy that you're busting full of people and regular employees good luck seriously good luck. I think if you all have a hostess/seater - they need to be they type of person who is really outgoing caretaking and backs up the staff it's a job paid by love of community not money LOL I plan to return, I felt the food was well made and quality and fresh and hot with beautiful toast ! Have you noticed there are no good reviews since 2017? It slooowly became self evident. As a good friend said, if you have a choice between eating here and having a root canal, pick the latter. With only 8 other people in the restaurant, it only took 45 minutes to get our "food". How is a fried patty of mashed potatoes considered a potato pancake? Perhaps they were describing the shape of the potato. Their special Chicken Thai salad was shredded cabbage out of a bag with canned jalapeños and other foreign objects. The sourdough (reported to be their best) was like a slice of Wonder Bread disguised as sourdough. Bottom line, it was awful service only to be outdone by the food. Yech. read more

The food is always delicious the service is great. I've been here a few times and haven't been disappointed yet. It does get pretty packed on the weekends so make sure you get in early! The patio is nice when the weather is agreeable; sitting at the bar is also pretty great when it gets too hot. You can tell this place is well established and a local gem. Nothing seems super new inside, but I think that adds to the charm. My coffee never got cold or empty, which is always a plus in my book. Each time I've been there, I've tried something different, but this last time I ordered the BJs omelet with hash browns and toast! It was wayyyy too much food, but it made for excellent left overs. Me and my friends were trying to find a new breakfast place, so we came here. Pros: -Food was tasty. Cons: -Me and another friend found MULTIPLE hairs in our food/beverages. To their credit, they got/offered to get us new food. -We saw a waitress drop a piece of egg on the floor while walking it to a table. - They forgot to get one of us bacon (as part of a breakfast combo), but still added it to the bill. - The orange juice didn't taste like orange... it was more like a pineapple blend. -Outdoor seating has a ton of flies flying around. So we used to visit The Roost when it was in their original location and always had a great experience. We had a group of 6 and went to the new location this last Monday. Disappointed! As much as the new place is beautiful, the food was not up to par. 2 of us ordered the BAT (Eggs Benney) and the eggs were basically hard boiled, no runny yoke and if you ask me, that's the best part. We told the waitress and she just basically just said "Oh ok"... 1 of us ordered the breakfast burrito and it was so soggy and fell apart. We all asked for crispy hash browns and some of us had perfect and others were over crispy and burnt. Super disappointing and probably wouldn't visit again. read more
