Stopped in for breakfast on Sunday morning. The location has seen a lot of different businesses, a Pizza Hut, a Jaspare's, and now The Rooster's Call. The interior is well done and bright and the decor is charming. The windows are the old Pizza Hut type, and they let in a good amount of natural light. The white ceiling helps, and the sound killing baffles are a definite nice touch. In a restaurant that is essentially a box of smooth planes, they help immensely to keep the sound down to an acceptable background murmur. The service was top notch and won this restaurant most of its stars. The waitstaff are doing a commendable job. The food is okay, certainly if you are looking for breakfast food, you will expect everything you get. The prices are slightly higher than I was expecting, but it wasn't a problem since plain pancakes are cheap. The food is mostly SysCo sourced and so, the only thing the restaurant can bring is seasoning, timing, and service. While food service food is reliable, it is also monumentally dull and cookie-cutter sameness makes those places that use it just glorified fryers, ovens, microwaves, and plancha grills attached to a wooden box for people. The food is plain and reliable, so three stars for that, just like everywhere else. SysCo pretty much gets 2.75 stars, the rest is the labor in heating it up. I like seeing new restaurants appear. Compared to other cities in which I have lived (e.g., Ann Arbor), Kalamazoo has, I have often opined, a smaller number of restaurants than average and a smaller number of interesting or innovative restaurants than average. We do like to go to breakfast, and we know there is only so much innovation one can apply to that meal. We see restaurants that do breakfast as falling into three groups: Some restaurants try to create an angle that makes them different from all others locally (Breakfast at Tiffany's & Full City Cafe on Centre Street come to mind). Others are diners that offer the basics, but hope to take advantage of location (i.e., because a good location means little or no competition)(Arlene's in Battle Creek and the Cornerview Cafe in Parchment are examples). The third group, which is rare, does both: it offers unique or different flavors and has a great (or wackadoodle) location (the now defunct Cafe 237 in Paw Paw is the best example). Years ago, I always wished Cafe 237, whose talented chef/owner sadly passed away, was closer to where I lived so I could more often access it. But I also think that about Chinn Chinn and Nonla's in Mattawan. The Rooster Call is in the second group. It's competition locally is a Michelle's (blah) and two chain restaurants, Panera's (blah) and McDonald's (blah, though, okay, I admit the biscuits are killer). Its breakfast menu is nothing out of the ordinary. It offers the usual proteins, eggs, and starches for breakfast. It's a diner. It opened 2 weeks ago. The building has been repurposed from a recently moved Jaspar's, which moved west a half mile on Gull Road to a bigger building, and before that, a Pizza Hut. It's easy to see the Pizza Hut architectual style in the exterior; but the interior is updated. It is clean and and kinda cute with the pictorial references to the restaurant's name. There are a slew of 4 person tables and a counter with 8 stools. There are no booths. We came one early morning at a potentially dangerous time: there was a group of 15 men and one boy seated before us that hadn't yet ordered. But my girl and I can make quick decisions off a menu, and the server took our order first (very appreciated). Orders are entered on a portable electronic device (very modern). Coffee was distributed via carafes dropped off at the table a la Antique Kitchen. The coffee was what diners serve. It was hot. And then we realized we were in trouble. So the server got to the painstaking process of getting the big group's orders. And we waited. And waited. We were not clear how this kitchen communicated to the server that there were orders ready for pickup. Some restaurants have cooks ring a bell; other restaurants have cooks that shout out. Eventually someone from the kitchen (a woman we had not so far seen in the dining room) walked out with our plates. We guessed the plates had sat waiting because the plates themselves and the food were barely warm. We also speculated there was no mechanism to keep food warm as it waited for pickup. The server delivered the big group's orders as we ate and watched; we never saw the other woman again. The restaurant had nothing on the menu involving corned beef, so I ordered the Southwestern omelet (black beans, red peppers, and pepper jack cheese, covered with salsa and slices of avocado). It came with wheat toast and hash browns. My girl ordered poached eggs and bacon. It came with junior pancakes and hash browns. Neither a professional chef nor a complete fool in a kitchen, I judge a diner on whether it can make the food better than I can make it at home. My omelet's flavor came mostly from the egg and salsa. There was a slice of some unknown cheese laying underneath the avocado; maybe there were red peppers in the salsa? But I tasted egg and salsa and nothing else. The wheat toast and hash browns offered the typical diner taste profile. Handed two single serving Smuckers jelly packs, I cringed: I dislike it when a restaurant chooses the jelly or jam for my toast rather than having a jelly caddy of everything on the table. My girl said her eggs were fine, the bacon was okay, the hash browns forgettable, and the pancakes had a tough exterior. She finds that this last happens when pancake batter is over mixed or old (i.e., as in batter made the previous day). Bottom line: No, I can cook better than this. I'd compare this with Michelle's food down the road. But we caught the restaurant at a bad time. Dealing with 15 1/2 loud and boisterous males should have meant using 2 servers. We saw the server walk back plates to the kitchen, so orders may have been getting mixed up. Finally, an alternative to the fast food and chain establishments that line Gull Road! I arrived at just past 1:00 pm, and the dining room was approximately 75% occupied. I found an empty table, and a server greeted me in less than two minutes. I ordered a club sandwich and cup of vegetable beef soup. During the short wait for my lunch, I admired the limited decor and cleanliness of the dining room. My food arrived promptly, and tasted as I expected. Each member of the staff seemed genuinely happy to be there. Checkout was right at the table--easy and convenient. I'm looking forward to trying breakfast. read more

I love this place. I have been coming here for breakfast now 1-2 days/week. The menu is great. It may not be super diverse compared to others that I have seen, but I don't need super diverse. I like the basics. The first time I went I got the eggs, cheese, and sausage omelet with a plain bagel. This is usually my go too. Everything was delicious and at a great price. The second time I went I got the waffle combo with eggs and sausage. The waffle I got had strawberries , vanilla ice cream, and whip cream on them. The presentation was excellent and it tasted great. The third time I tried there lunch menu and got there cheeseburger and tater tots and chicken noodle soup. The soup was delicious, similar to something I would get at a Bob Evans maybe, but hey I like their soup too. The burger was delicious and cooked just how I want it. The speed of their food arrival was impressive. Very quick and prompt. The décor in the place is sensational. Today, I went in and they most have picked up on me. The waitress brought over a diet coke for me and greeted me with my name. She said she served me before and remember the name on my nametag. That was VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!!!! They also knew what I wanted to order! VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!!. It came out on time and delicious. The staff is amazing. I know some people compare it to other restaurants on this site. All I can say is the beginning was probably a little rough. I remember the first week I went, they were still getting used to their electronic system. However, this a restaurant that can rival Panera, Michelle's, McDonald's, Burger King, and Taco Bell in the area. I think with some unique menu items in the future, this restaurant has amazing potential. I do have a suggestions for a menu item. Breakfast burgers are a thing. The building is a rehabbed old Pizza Hut building that was very tastefully done. Hip little diner serving classic breakfast and lunch menu items. The staff was very friendly. We came for breakfast, and I am a simple eggs, potatoes, and bacon guy. Everything was cooked to order, potatoes were crisp and moist, not soggy, and the bacon was perfect. 6 of us for lunchtime all enjoyed breakast (my favorite meal out) and I always order eggs Benedict whenever possible. They use a delicious ham rather than often chewy Canadian bacon, and that was a nice treat. I requested the hash browns be extra crispy and they did not disappoint. Normally I make my breakfast at home or have a cereal bar. But today some friends wanted us to go out for breakfast. They've drive this location many times and wanted to try. So I got to go with them and try it out. As you can tell by the pictures it's really cute inside. You're given menus quickly as well. Drink orders are taken first and then you have plenty of time to look at the menu. They serve both breakfast and lunch, so just in case you're feeling a waffle, or burger. We got a bunch of stuff just to try everything out. Eggs, bacon, and potatoes! I had to be extra since I was really hungry. I got a chocolate banana French toast, egg and bacon on the side, and a club wrap with fries. The French toast was ok, it felt like the chocolate was more bitter like dark chocolate, but it looked milky. The banana saved it though and gave it an even sweetness. As for the club that I also had. I really felt like it was lacking something and I feel like that something was cheese. I'm not really sure if it had cheese on it or it doesn't come with it. But it certainly needs a cheese to balance out all the meat. Still very good though, best wrap I've had in a while! I really wish I got sunny-side up eggs. If I were able to rate the service (from 1-5) separately from the food, I certainly would do that here. Because I can only give one overall rating, I have to go with three stars because of the food. This place has so much potential the owner relies too much on items from a foodservice purveyor. For me, the first impression is the ketchup. "House Recipe" is a Sysco brand. That tells me right away that you'd rather save a few cents than spring for Heinz. The decor is nice and I appreciate the effort put into transforming the previously dark and stale Jaspare's space. The service was very good. Valerie was very attentive, but not overly so, and the wait for her or the food was just right. They were busy and I thought they handled the people and the orders well. Specifically for my meal: two eggs (over-easy); hash-browns, corned beef hash, white toast. The eggs were cooked well and tasted okay. The hash-browns were not seasoned at all. The corned beef hash came out in a log shape (was it right from a package?) and the flavor was muddled and salty - very disappointing. The toast was from the usual foodservice bread and pre-buttered (why do so many places insist on doing this?). Unlike another reviewer here, I am not as turned off with the jam/jelly packets. At least they were Smuckers brand. I would love to see them shorten the menu and get better at making more food from scratch. Granted, they would have to charge more and some people in the area might be turned away. Overall I think this would be a big benefit. read more

I've been here a few times now because it's right around the corner from my house. The servers are all amazing. Their attitude and aptitude are a huge part of why I come here. My only critique is the toast. There is a middle ground between burnt toast and untoasted bread. Every time I come here the toast is burnt even when I ask for it lightly toasted. Then when I send it back, they serve me warm, but in no way toasted, bread. Toast is so so easy to make. I know from experience. Pls just figure it out. I stopped in here for lunch and had their avocado toast with eggs. They offer a pretty good selection of toast options and I was pleased with the wheat I ordered. The eggs were good-sized and there was a generous portion of avocado as well. I also sampled the hash browns and a pancake. The hash browns were good, but I was really impressed by the pancake. It had a nicely browned, crispy outside and soft, fluffy inside. I am eager to come back and try one of the fancier pancake offerings, like the oatmeal cookie, because I was so impressed by the plain pancake. We had high hopes. I got the butter pecan french toast with eggs and sausage. My husband got the meat omlet. The eggs are not real and had a funky taste. That's how I knew. The French Toast was sad. It was small and the cream they put on it was way too much my egg portion was a joke and it just did not taste good. It was expensive for what you get. I mean how can you charge 5 bucks for 1 piece of french toast. Nothing to write home about. My theory is similar to another here: if I can make it at home and it's only as good as mine, why bother? For me, IF it's as good as mine, ok because I'm not having to stand in the kitchen or do the dishes but, if it's NOT as good as mine, I'd rather make it myself. We. were in need of a place for breakfast and to do a gender reveal (very quietly was the goal) after my DIL's ultrasound and this is the ONLY place on the east side (other than Liz's which is TERRIBLE) for breakfast. The place is cute and looked clean. It's also VERY noisy so, instead of being very quiet we had to yell to be heard over the din in the room. Service rates a 5. Food, a 2 at best. The pancakes were ok (sorry, I make mine from scratch so it's pretty difficult to beat mine) and the French toast was also ok. Not real good; not bad. Just ok. Eggs were cold. Avocado toast, meh. California BLT, barely edible. Sausage sides ok. Bacon?? Well, I've never before seen bacon nearly raw AND burnt at the same time but they managed it. Overall, I'd rather go into Kalamazoo next breakfast out. I really do NOT get why it's so difficult to make a decent breakfast. Oh, and that garbage they call Poutine?? Skip it. I love the veggie omelette with sausage. Absolutely perfect. Ask for the pancakes to be served after the omelette, it's like dessert. The staff is great and what you'd expect at a breakfast place. Really nice updated looks and everything appeared clean. We were seated quickly, waited on quickly, and fed very quickly. Service was great, drinks refilled the very second they were emptied. Service in general was excellent. Food was the typical breakfast joint. I had 2 eggs, hashbrowns, and pancakes. The scrambled eggs were cooked perfect. No snotty eggs:). I was impressed by the option of toast or pancakes, can't get that anywhere. Prices were a little high for the quality of the meal. But the service did make up for that. Just opened Saturday July 29,2017. Hours are 7 days a week 6am to 2pm. I had their version of breakfast putine; 2 eggs on top of sausage on top of tater tots and bacon. My boyfriend and I just tried this restaurant out for the first time. The waitress was nice but the food took a long time to come out. In the time we were there the table next to us ordered, waited forever for their food, got their food, their food was wrong and had to be recooked, they got their food a second time ate it got their check cashed out and left. When we finally got our food my boyfriend's eggs Benedict looked ok and he said it was fine but not great for the price. I got regular pancakes with strawberries on top and the strawberries were ice cold (some still half frozen) and not in any kind of strawberry sauce just plain frozen strawberries. I didn't want to wait for something else. Overall mediocre breakfast that takes forever for the same price as dinner, not worth it. Probably won't try again. read more
