Let's just say that Lafayette would be a sterile, bland, bedroom community....Wait, let me rephrase. Lafayette is all the above but the Round Up makes the town worth going to. This bar is a town institution, everything from newly minted 21-year-olds, to cougars, dirty old men and snotty St. Mary's College kids, and some bikers. Full-sized shuffleboard table, hard to get on because it's popular, a few pool tables and some decent bands. It's an active spot. My only knock on the place is that the male and female bartenders on Thursday nights really don't seem to enjoy their jobs. Rarely smile or engage the customers. They act put upon but they are probably making good money in tips. Drinks are good and the right price. So if one was to find him or herself trapped in Lafayette, this would be the place to head to for some fun. read more

Back in 2010...this place was kicking on the weekends with an eclectic mix of people sharing a laugh over beers on tap. Fast forward 3 years and it's a bit tired with the Friday night VJ stylings of East Bay icon Diamond Dave (you either love him or hate him) and Saturday night "drunken" karaoke. The Roundup is one of the best things about living in Lafayette. On most nights it beats watching " the bounty hunter" on HBO for the 900th time. Yes it's a little tired around the edges and the decor is about the same as it was in 1974 but once you step inside all of one's troubles just sort of melt away in a dive bar time warp. It has fairly limited seating so on a busy Friday night the floor is filled with people mingling sort of like a house party in someone's living room in Concord. It's probably the only bar in Lafayette and draws a variety of people from the LaMorinda area. A live band was playing last night which was very good. Pool tables are not too busy even though the place was packed with people until midnight. This is a cash only place and not a place to have wine . Stay with beers and other spirits. The place is old and has a bad smell towards the restrooms so this is something the owners should look at and clean up. But then it is a dive so my expectations are very low. Came in with my BF and ordered two beers and two shots- was $25 dollars- gave the female bartender $30 and she never came back with change- would of given it all to her but called her on it and she was rude! The Round Up just might be the worst bar I have ever been to. Came here once over Thanksgiving Break and will never venture back there again. The crowd was 90% college students, 10% people old enough to look like their parents. This is the first bar I have ever been to where I felt old. I was 22. It was impossible to get a drink, impossible to move, impossible to breathe. This bar reminded me of why I drove the extra 30 min. to the city to party on weekends when I still lived in the East Bay. I have been going to this local dive bar (and I say that in a nice way) for the last six months. People friendly, pool tables, shuffle board, and tonight a donation event. All great. Hard week, came in to relax. All good. Until. The bartender came out from under her rock and just starred at me screaming inside, "what the f do you want and hurry it up." I instantly felt terrified and silently bullied. "Could I have some beer?", I pleaded. I have been a bartender, a waitress, a personal chef, and have faced some of the WORST humans known to man but, this bartender was over the top with NO personality, didn't give a shit whether I lived or died, or anyone else in the bar. The worst service EVER! I must say the bar was understaffed. Manager's flaw. But, she has a job (a lot of people don't) and has the arrogance to act like an asshole to the very people who are feeding her! She obviously hasn't had much angst or hunger pangs in her life time. Whew! I don't want to return but it's the only dive in town! I could do her job with a smile, a friendly welcome, a listening gesture and have a neat bar. Why does she have a job? Enough said. Go for the cheap beer, the gossip, the filthy restrooms, the stinking smell, and the bad service. And I love dive bars for that. But this is below dive. This place, along with the bar around the corner, are my go-to spots in Lafayette for when I want to indulge in my alcoholism during the week. Misery loves company, and this musty bar serves as breeding grounds for depression and morally questionable decisions. In other words: It's my kinda place. As I said before, I like coming here during the week. There's less of a crowd than what you'll see on a Friday or Saturday night, but during the week is when all the real winners (such as myself) come out, and it makes for some excellent people-watching. Trust me, you'll see a whole different side of Lafayette that you won't come across during daylight hours. Cougars, misguided Saint Mary's undergrads, businessmen, and bikers can be seen trying to interact with each other in this rickety wooden watering hole, and this combination can make for an interesting night. The drinks are always stiff and reasonably priced, as they should be. Most of the bartenders are friendly, and the ones that aren't friendly are just not very social--at least they're not total dicks either way. For your entertainment, they have a shuffleboard that isn't level, but it's free and fun to play to pass the time. They also have 2 pool tables and a ping pong table in the back. There's a jukebox, and on some nights you can catch a live band. Plus they have karaoke on Wednesday and Sunday nights, which can provide a real special experience while enjoying some adult beverages. I can almost taste the desperation in the air every time I hear someone performs a drunken rendition of "When a Man Loves a Woman." There's a big screen TV near the jukebox, and it's fun to come here and watch a game. My favorite part of the decor is the deer head mounted on the wall above the bar. As I sip my whiskey, I look up at the tacky pair of sunglasses its sporting and I get the sense that the deer wouldn't have his decapitated head on display any other way. The circle of life, it's a beautiful thing I tell ya. This place is exactly what it sets out to be: A bar in a small town. Compared to the snooty-ness of a lot of the bars in Walnut Creek, this place has a super casual, down-home vibe that I really dig. With a small parking lot of it's own and a huge lot just across the street, parking is always really easy. I've been in here a few times, every time the bartender makes me wonder why I did. Im not a fan of the other pretentious options in Lafayette when I want a beer after work, so I want to like this place so bad,....but I can't, the female bartender with brown hair in here which I always seem to get is borderline hostile, like I've walked into her house uninvited, kicked her dog and demanded she cook me dinner. She can't smile, the word please and thank you are not in her vocabulary and I think her doctor has told her eye contact is potentially fatal. This is Lafayette's one and only "dive bar". It has been a drinking hole for Saint Mary's students for quite some time. I for one have always had a great time at the Round Up. On a college night it can be packed which is frustrating, but still a good time. There is live music, and they usually pick a pretty good band. Locals of all ages can be found in the early evening grabbing a beer after work, then around 10pm it fills with the college crowd. There is a nice big bar with stools to sit at, it's sort of an "S" shape. There are pool tables, two I believe and one shuffle board. It's definetley an experience. Check it out. read more

If you stop by during the daytime to get an ice cold beer, get ready to deal with an ice cold bartender. She did not go an extra mile to be nice. Great "dive" bar in town! Actually only bar in town. This place is authentic with the original decor of taxidermy and signage from the saloon era. Lots of entertainment here with shuffle board, pool tables, arcade games, and live music or karaoke. The crowd here is a combo of college kids, working professionals, and seasoned crowd. All mesh together perfectly to create an energetic lively fun crowd. Staff are great and pour some heavy drinks. Always an adventure when coming here! read more

This place is very hit or miss. Hit: Saturdays, sometimes, because of the karaoke. Fridays with a good mix of music or live band. Miss: Any day of the week can be a miss. Round Up is a great local bar. It is not a "dive". It is "old". Your grandaddy probably avoided grandama by coming here. People don't seem to know what a dive bar is. The bartenders, including the brunette one, are all capable and friendly. Don't know why anyone would have a problem with her. She's incredibly cool and has a dry sense of humor. If you are a humorless and difficult whiner, don't expect her to trip over herself to give you good service. In fact, expect the opposite. It's the kind of place that has great business and doesn't really need yours. If you are a nouveau riche snob who expects people to kiss your %ss, then you might be disappointed. One of my favorite spots in the Bay Area. Remember walking to this bar from the Lafayette Park Hotel after a few too many drinks at a Holiday Party. Been coming back ever since. The Round Up produces so many alcoholics they ought to hold AA meetings in the parking lot. I myself am a casualty, but that doesn't stop me from ranking this dive among the best dive bars in the Bay Area. I used to love the juke box, the shuffleboard table, and the strong drinks. The crowd went in phases; every six months or so a bunch of locals would come home to roost and there would be a magical era where going into the Round Up made you feel like Norm walking into Cheers. Then after a few more months, the regular crowd would thin back down to the usual desperate suspects and once again the besotted camaraderie wouldn't be enough to compensate for the smell of stale beer and a dysfunctional sewer system. I don't regret a moment I spent there (and there were a lot of them). I also don't miss it now that I'm sober. It's an institution. read more

I eventually went to the round-up because of all the other reviews said ot was a must in Lafayette. I think this place must be popular with the St Mary college crowd because they have cheap drinks. The staff is friendly, but it feels so dirty you want to finish your drink standing up. They let people smoke out the backdoor while its left open so it wafts through the place.
