I went to get a drink with my friend and after the first security checked out ids and almost let us in the second older petite security guy asked to see them again and then proceeded to pocket our IDs and say "we're good here". We were confused and asked if he was going to give them back and he said no they are clearly fake. Both my friend and I are 24 years old and had valid IDS and I also was visiting via plane so we had to call the police to report that our IDs were falsely taken. He continued to berate us and act as if we were bluffing when we clearly were not. Once he realized we really were calling the police he went in and scanned it and verified they are real and handed them back. No apology or anything. Sir if you can't tell a real CALIFORNIAN ID from a fake I suggest a new profession. read more

So they've taken a fun bar and opened up a nicely fenced in back patio with tables and a cover, overall a great space. Then ruined it by putting ashtrays on every table and letting people smoke through out the entire space, right outside the bar door. So this is covid safe huh, breathing everyone's second hand smoke. The Round Up makes for a cheap happy hour with a thoroughly entertaining roster of characters stumbling around the pool tables, shuffleboard, or Golden Eye. The rustic, dingy charm and unifying effect of economical liquor really shines through, attracting patrons of all walks: the flamingly adorable PG&E boy, his egotistical cohort who toted around his own pool cue, the local ponytailed, tattooed, earringed but scrawny badboy who picked fights and roamed around on his Bianchi only to get arrested in the plaza parking lot across the street. Like I said, all sorts. Who can resist a $5 Irish coffee when there's always a bar stool in attendance? It's likely the corners haven't seen a mop for decades but the taps flow cleanly, and the bartender isn't without a pleasant sort of saltiness. I'd attribute her hardened attitude to the leering of the male patrons that pack the place and descend when there's a semi-precious female in their midst. The Roundup is a little piece of Lafayette history. Located across from a Starbucks and as you enter La Fiesta Square, this divey, cash-only bar seems somewhat out of place....but it's been here since as long as I can remember and barely anything has changed since the first time I stepped in. What hasn't changed: ***It's still a dive: In this upscale area where you would expect to find a wine bar or a gastro pub, this place is still the sticky, rowdy "scene" that it's always been. ***It's still stuck in the payment Stone Age: Like I said before it's cash only so if you forget, you'll have to use their on premise ATM or walk down the street to the bank ***Shuffleboard and pool is still a staple: There is still always a shuffleboard or pool game going on in this place What has changed: ***Karaoke: Yes I said Karaoke! They have it on the weekends and it's a bizarre mix of good and bad (a couple weekends ago I saw nautical clad folks do a pretty good rendition of "I'm on a boat!") ***Wifi: This hasn't changed recently but it is new if you haven't been to the bar since your first weekend back from college. And yes this means that occasionally during the work day you might see a business person at the bar with their computer. If you've been around Lafayette long enough to remember Petar's (sniff) or the Kilarney house or that weird bar/club-ish place that was down by the old Hillside Inn, then you can appreciate that we have the Roundup right where I remember it, across from Uncle Yu's. Within this patch of pricey Lafayette real estate, I'm pleasantly surprised that a dive bar such as this still exists. I've been here before, but stopped in again yesterday to watch part of the Stanley Cup Finals before heading off for a hair appointment. I ordered a pint of IPA from a friendly bar keep who called me Munchkin (Cute) and proceeded to almost be the lone fan as Vancouver and Boston hit the ice. After the haircut, I returned to watch the rest of the game. But alas, the channel was switched to the Giants game! Oy! And it's Game 7 for G-d's sake! Oh yes the Bar. Comfortably divey with some pool tables, interesting mix of locals, and a nice antique Western bar. There is nothing exotic about the Round Up. It's old, dirty & a little sleazy. But honestly, when my husband and I are headed home from the city, it's a rockin little stop. Stop in, play some pool or even some shuffleboard. It really is a strange, funky little stop. But quite fun for a late night, I'm not ready to go home yet little stop. This place and Petar's are why I love Lafayette so much. Maybe it's becuause I can't stand Marina bros /hipsters in SF, or all the vato locos in San Jose. The Roundup is just a melting pot of all types/styles but everyone is so chill and just looking to have a good time. I love the kareoke nights. People go there and dance to your performance if you are good. The drinks are cheap, the people are legit, get your booty down to the ROUNDup, where a good times are aplenty. read more

Was here tonight for the first time, despite living in Lafayette for 3 years now and being in my mid-20s. The crowd wasn't too bad, definitely not as full as I've seen it some nights when driving by, but it was still pretty full. The clientele was people of all ages and ranged the full spectrum (I.e. appearing very wealthy, looking like a biker, or college students). I'd say service matches your standard dive bar--could be great or could suck, depending on the bar tender and how you act, as well. THIS PLACE FRICKIN ROCKS!!!!!! I love to meet up with friends here, listen to music once in a while, and just hangout. This place has a very dedicated group of regulars that gives the place a local vibe. It is hard to believe this joint exists in the middle of Lafayette. I must use this as my chance to give my props to the bartenders here. There seems to be a lot of negative and mixed feedback here about them, so here is the real deal. They can hang with the best of them on a busy Friday or Saturday night. They are all pretty awesome in my opinion. Hadn't been here since my 20s and ended up here on Thanksgiving evening, surrounded by a bunch of drunks. No judgment people, these were some serious characters. Everyone here wants to talk. I think we got asked 4 times if we were locals, or better yet, "So are you guys locs?" Best of all, every time my male companion went to the bathroom I was bombarded by a slew of men telling me how beautiful I am. Me likes. Bartenders here are actually nice. Let me return my wine (because it was horrible - I mean, this is California! yes it's a dive bar, but find a decent bottle of wine to serve) and even made me a new drink with top shelf booze. Possibly one of the first times in my life I have actually had a drink at a bar that was too strong. But who am I to complain? From the awesome jukebox to the shuffleboard and pool tables, why did I ever think The Roundup sucked? Maybe because I don't live in the East Bay anymore (yeah, I'm a loc) and maybe because almost anywhere is preferable to Walnut Creek.... but I think the Roundup will be my new dive when I'm home for a visit. Service was awful! The bartender had a horrible attitude and was smoking and taking shots behind the bar. She had a green coat and was rude to everyone that she interacted with. So many people would love to have her job or a job period during these times but she just seems like a miserable person who has no respect for anyone. First, yes, I've had good times here, BUT... ...there are 2 problems that become intolerable. My opinions come from my years as a bartender and manager. Before I get to the problems, let me say that I really like the decor, but not as much as I like the crowd. Whatever time of day or night, this is a Cool-Fun crowd. 1) You CANNOT open a tab; they don't take cards, and their home-grown ATM costs like $3. 2) This is the big one. LOUSY SERVICE.. Only once have I gotten adequate service, and that was mid-afternoon. Bartenders should ALWAYS be scanning the crowd, and give a nod showing that, yes, they're busy, but they see you and will get to you. These bartenders NEVER do that. You can't ever tell if you've been seen or if you will ever get a drink. My friend and I stood at the bar for 3 songs with no acknowledgement, but suddenly a guy muscled his way in front of us and got instant service. When I waved my hand, the blondie bartender very rudely said "Yes, I SEE you". Really? Why didn't you see me for the last 10 minutes? An hour after my first beer, I stood for another 2 songs waiting to see if they noticed my waving $20, and overheard people complaning. Overheard: "Do you think it's easier to get laid here or get a drink?" "It's 11:00, do you think we'll get a drink before we're completely sober?" In short: The SERVICE? If it's not busy, Great. If it's kinda busy? Almost adequate. BUSY? Go to Walnut Creek, or elsewhere. Their "only game in town" attitude is obvious. Their bartenders know drinks, but they don't know how to manage a crowd. They need an additional bartender, one who knows the meaning of "HUSTLE". They should treat their Cool-Fun crowd better. read more

The Round Up Saloon in Lamorinda (Lafayette-Moraga-Orinda) is like an old spaghetti western with Squint Eastwood, I mean Clint Eastwood: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. The Good: Just like the movie, this place has a western theme. (Or is it just that old?) Mixed drink like a Gin and Tonic, is only $3.50 everyday, anytime! (Exception: That same drink during Happy Hour is only $3.00!) 3 Pay pool tables Shuffleboard (this is really old school bar stuff!) A pinball machine and a couple of video game machines Liar's dice Female bartender with big boobs (Isn't that the key qualification?) 3 TVs The Bad: There are all sorts of junk on the walls, that look decades old There is dust all over, especially a thick layer on the stuff on the walls At least 3 mounted, taxidermed deer heads on the walls 1 mounted, taxidermed wild pig's head, with a fake hand in it's mouth The TV's are old CRTs, no modern, larger flat screens The Ugly: Some of the clients are very loud and drunk, even the ladies (Ladies: I use that term loosely) Except for the western theme and heritage, this place is much like that little dive bar in your neighborhood, you know, the one with no windows (although this has a large picture window facing the main street), with older, wrinkled skin regulars (well, some are nicer here in upscale suburbia and wear dockers), the darkish interior, and with a name like: The Do Drop In, Elbow In, The Shadow Box, The Top of the Town, The Manhattan Club (these are actual names of those kind of places!) Didn't see anyone with a thin, dark brown ciggy in his mouth, with squinty eyes, a leather hat, wearing a serape like the movie, though. Wait, I think I hear whistling and men grunting in unison! Could it be the hit song from the Spaghetti Westerns................"Hang'em High"? Maybe there is another link to Squint Eastwood, given the pig on the wall here, and Squint, being the former mayor and owner of the Hog's Breath restaurant in Carmel? For "A Few Dollars More" we'll play "Hang'em High" here again. But I don't think they serve spaghetti. read more

Whoa.... What happened to the cool bartenders?? It had been years since I had been to the good old Roundup, let along a bar in general, and since my best friend and I wanted to meet up at a so called "dive bar" just for the heck of it to grab a drink, I decided to take her to this little saloon that I once thought was quite cool. Ok, ok, so I still absolutely loove the completely ancient, rustic, never been touched since it opened in the early 1900s ambiance - all equipped with pool tables and a jukebox playing back to back 80s rock music, but my gosh, you would think that an actual cool bartender would come with the package right? eehhh We went to the bar to order our drinks from the so called "bartender" and we asked about the different beers they had available. He rolled his eyes and vaguely went over the different types.... almost like a teenage girl finding out she was grounded for staying up late..... this guy was literally a priss disguised in tattoos...who was he foolen? We then ordered our 2 beers. I pulled out my card to pay which he then CLEARLY STATED that its cash only and that an ATM was towards the back...Ok dude! Sorry its that time of the month for you! Well, we decided to not let him ruin our experience here, so we paid for our drinks and sat at a nice round table far away from the WONDERFUL bartender. We ended up getting in a few good laughs and took in the rest of the cool ambiance. The beer we had, also took the ease off. We were there for less than a half hour and decided we had enough. You know, the place is certainly quite cool as far as ambiance goes, and if it wasn't for that poor bartender, we probably would have enjoyed ourselves more, but unfortunately attitude and drinks just don't mix...at least not with me. Wow, it's as if I stepped out of Northern California and into rural Pennsylvania. Glad to see that a dive bar here, is a dive bar anywhere. This experience is a far departure from anything San Francisco has to offer. The walls (wood paneled) are littered with cobwebbed deer heads, aging newspapers, and appropriated traffic signs. The air is heavy with the smell of musty cigarette smoke (in spite of the fact nobody was smoking) and it even comes complete with barflies, who randomly shout/mutter at the TV. Full experience here people. Echoing other reviewers, yes, they take their shuffle board seriously. Even the bartender was playing at one point. While it may not sound like a resounding review, they're trying really hard. They've got an image and the people of Lafayette seem to be okay with that. I mean hey, they serve Rolling Rock, the high end working man's beer. Who can say no to that. The place grows on me. Minus one star for not serving Iron City or getting groped....as I said, they try hard. read more

We went here to catch a Playoff game and we wound up leaving after the 1st quarter. The conversation is by verbatim and not an opinion. "Hi, can I please get a Pitcher of Hefeweizen?" Bar keep "No, we don't have Pitchers of Beer and, No we don't have Hefeweizen on tap" . Me- "Can I have 3 Blue-moons and open up a tab?" Bar keep "No, Cash only bar" thanks but no thanks. We drank our 3 beers and said adios. There are plenty of watering holes to watch my Sporting events and the Round Up saloon is not one of them. Me and A fell in here bc we were tired of casa orinda and this was the first bar we passed on the way to WC. All we wanted were cheap drinks and to talk about sex (or lack thereof] safely out of young family earshot. Yay Round Up. Dive bar complete with deer heads mounted. I can't believe Lafayette City Council approves this place, but I salute them for them doing so. The bartender was friendly enough and poured a good g+t. But he had the misfortune of telling me (discreetly) that it was cash only. I hate that bc I rarely carry more than $20 and it wreaked havoc with my drink limit. Although, I have to admit, it got me home On Time and Under Budget. Well G+T's ran me about $3 so I'm not complaining. The clientele were mostly men in their mid 30's 40's. I guess. I give the Round up 4 stars because it meets my needs when I go there. People - the people here, who are regulars, are down to earth and not pretentious at all. You could probably spot them in the crowd. The bartenders, including the bouncers, have all worked here for years -- the reason they are still here is because they take pride in their work and take their job seriously. This is more of a guys bar, not too many women here. There are video games, music, shuffle board (haven't seen anyone take that too seriously -- just drunks playing around), pool tables (I have on occasion seen that taken seriously). Bathrooms leave a lot to be desired, though I think they try...men's bathroom is the worst I hear! St. Mary's kids do come here, especially if there is something going on at the college. It's still fun at the Round Up, people are easy to talk to. Food - You can order peanuts and chips at the bar but that's about it. They aren't picky if you go to one of the nearby restaurants and bring food in - though you might start a trend and everyone will be headed to wherever you just came from with that food. Rules - Bouncer watches the doors religiously. If you attempt to take a drink outside they will catch you as soon as you take a step outside. Smoking is in the front door or done at the back door. Saturdays they have karaoke...really annoying. They have live bands on Thursdays or Fridays I think. They usually have upcoming things painted on there windows. Bartenders and bouncers don't tolerate crap, they all look out for eachother so if you are a mean or obnoxious drunk this is probably not the place for you. The other nice thing about the Round Up is it is next door to Starbuck's but you can also get free coffee at the Round Up if that is your drink of choice. We usually go to the Round Up for drinks and then walk over to Petar's who has a singer called Diamond Dave every Friday and Saturday night. He has been around forever. The people at Petar's are a much older crowd, but Diamond Dave is good to dance too. I live in Lafayette and go to the Round Up because I can walk there and home, its also downtown so you can eat then go out. Whatever. read more
