I'm giving 3 stars simply because of the service and staff. This is fast food BBQ. I smoke a lot of BBQ as well as have eaten at some of the best BBQ joints. The burnt ends weren't very good. My brother took us to the Rub last night. He had never been there but the place he wanted to take us had an hour wait. I was amazed at how good their meats are! I have been smoking my own meats for 20 years and I must say that the half rack of ribs I had was the most generous serving of meat I have ever had at a barbecue restaurant! My wife got the burnt ends and loved them! The sides weren't very impressive so that's why I only gave them four stars but if I were to rate them on the meat alone I would give them five stars all day long! read more

Drove over and met some friends for an early dinner. We had the chicken and burnt ends and turkey and brisket. The chicken was slightly dry but good flavor. The turkey was really good. The fries were soft and not crispy. The creamy slaw was fresh and not over dressed. The pit beans have no sauce or meat but were well cooked with Lima and kidney beans in the mix. Not my favorite but with some bbq sauce added they were ok. The corn bread is like a soft pound cake texture... Really delicious. I just sampled my wife's...I wish I had ordered some too. The brisket didn't have a strong smoke flavor but was slightly dry... But excellent cut of meat without being stringy or fatty like some places... And a very generous serving. The original sauce tasted too peppery to me but the sweet sauce was very nice and added to the brisket made for a good meal. I also had the burnt ends which I think were the best of the meats. In an area known for its great Bar-B-Que, this venue falls short of the competition. Their prices are very reasonable and their staff is very friendly. Done in a cafeteria style, you order from the large board menu. Each day also has a different special. I ordered the 3 ribs with pulled pork. I couldn't really taste a good base rub on the ribs. It was smoked well, but without a signature flavor. The pulled pork was also "just OK". As if it came from a food service provider. For beverages, they serve soft drinks and beer. There was nothing else remarkable about this restaurant. Most of my colleagues didn't know it existed. Even their sauces were "just OK". Hence my overall rating. read more

The pulled pork is disgusting. I'm not sure how you can mess it up but they did. Ribs were dry and the burnt ends weren't very good. I had more crunchy bits than actual pieces of meat. There is a reason why this place wasn't busy on a Friday evening, and it isn't due to Covid. I had the burnt end platter. I am not sure why they call It a platter the portions are skimpy. The Carolina slaw sucks. I tried the spicy BBQ sauce it wasn't spicy it was just bad. We were hungry so we decided to eat here as a last resort. The Rub has the BEST cornbread. It is sweet, very very sweet, definitely could be on a dessert menu. And it is delicious. I love savory and sweet cornbread and this tops my list of sweet ones. It's best slightly warm with butter, the sugar-coated top is perfectly crunchy and the rest soft and crumbly. For breakfast? Serve warm with blackberry jam. This would hold up to being dipped in chili or any other excuse to eat a ton of it. The barbecue was good, too. Not the best ever but pretty good. Solid sandwiches, the burnt ends were a little on the chewy side, maybe due to their serving/ordering format and it was later in the day when we ordered. Firstly, they get 5 star simply for the service, let me explain. I had never been before so we decided to try it out Sunday. We had no idea they closed at 7 on sundays (thought it was 9 from something we saw online). We got there just after 7 and they never denied us, and even made fresh batch of fries for us. After we found out they were closed we were mortified, we sat in our car cringing because we never would go to a restaurant after closing!! They were so nice and never said a thing. Fantastic burnt ends. Some of the best I have had. That alone is a reason to give this place a try and me to return. Fries were good for what seemed "fresh cut". The Rub is what you do for barbecue if you're headed west, and have no time to go to an actual barbecue joint in the metro. Their sauce is grainy with pepper, but it's a strong sweet sauce - it's pretty good. The Carolina slaw is great: unctuous and fresh, it's a very clean palette cleanser. The beans are sweet, with honey or something in it, and the beans are all different sizes - very novel, and my favorite thing they make. Their corn bread is sweet, rustic with a wild corny flavor; it's got a great balance, but honestly it's just corn bread candy covered in sugar. Still, addicting and tasty. On the meat, the Pulled pork is meaty, like rib meat with hints of pork flavor. Burnt ends were slightly smoky, super meaty, and perfectly salted - like if if made it at home, and executed it flawlessly. Not a lot of fat on their burnt end, which was refreshing. It tastes like their smoking technique is phenomenal - I really liked the smoke in their preparations. Ribs were meaty, beautifully smoked to a subtle point with not too much of anything. What a great rib. The brisket is balanced and classy - albeit fatty in places a bit too far. It is as though they're chopping up fine furniture made of hickory to smoke their brisket with, so that's nice. Finally, their chicken is smoked well - really subtle, and not too smoky. All in all, It's a swing and a miss for me - I've had it multiple times, and each time it was edible, but regrettable. I feel the super lax staff need to shape up a little, and run that place like a fine seaworthy vessel for the creation of fine meat stuffs. Tried their restaurant in Olathe a loooong time ago, don't remember much other than it was a fast-casual concept similar to Chipotle or now Burnt Ends in Overland Park for BBQ. This review is for their food truck, which we patronized at the Meadowbrook Park Festival yesterday. Burnt Ends Sandwiches @ $12 had a generous serving of chunky burnt ends on a good but not great bun (we ate mostly the burnt ends anyway). Good flavor and texture. Since it was a food truck they offered bags of chips and canned sodas for simplicity. Very good value for meal received, would definitely hit up this truck again should we stumble upon it. read more

Decided to give this place a try. I'm in town often and this was my my first time giving it a try. The place is clean staff very friendly. I put a order in for carry out and when on my way back to my hotel my truck smelled so good. Once I got to my room I was so ready for it. I was kinda shocked as I got 2 meats & 2 sides and my pulled pork and chicken had been full mixed together. I would rather have them both separate. This led to me. It really liking it. The sides I got were cheesy corn (not a fan) Mac & cheese was just ok. I will be willing to give this place another try sometime by getting something different. I hate to say it, but I'm not as sold on this place as I used to be. I hate saying that, because I love the concept, and I love the location along my commute home, but...I'm not as sold as I once was. The last two visits have been underwhelming. Once was a pulled pork sandwich with creamy slaw, and another was a burned ends bowl with beans. The burnt ends are average, and the beans are still probably the best thing on the menu, and some of the best in KC. The pork and slaw, however, are pretty weak. Although piled on to the sandwich, the pork has been dry, tough and almost cold, with a very average flavor. The slaw...I don't know what it is, but I really, really dislike (almost, gasp, hate) the flavor. The service has been forgetful, and the prices are starting to seem a bit high for the quality of my last two experiences. I'm not saying don't go here. Maybe I've just been unlucky lately, because my first couple visits were quite nice, but I'm just...worried about the trend. read more

5 of us went to the soft opening of The Rub Bar-B-Que in Olathe. It was amazing. All the food was free you had to pay for beer. Donations were accepted and all the money went to Harvesters. The grand opening is this Sunday Father's Day and we will be there. We ordered between us burnt ends, pulled pork, ribs, meatloaf, two bowls, a po' boy, beans, cheesy corn, cole slaw, corn bread, onion straws and a brownie. I had a two meat plate that would have been $9.99 with 2 sides. I had the most perfect burnt ends and yummy pulled prok. My two sides were the best beans I have ever had in my life and onion straws. The BBQ beans are a mix of red beans, butter beans and navy beans. They are fabulous. The onion straws are lightly dusted with flour and fried. The burnt ends have just enough fat for flavor but not so much to be gross. The pork was smokey and tender. Hubby had the hash bowl. I know this sounds like a drug you would take and it is so good you would think it is, but really it was taters, onion straws, smoked chicken, sausage, pork, grilled onions and peppers and cheese for $8.99. He was able to able to find a piece of chicken for me that didn't have cheese on it and it had a great dry rub on it and good smoke flavor. The meatloaf is dairy free and super good. Zesty like the sauce and plenty of different spicies. Yes this BBQ joint has meatloaf and I recommend you try it. The po'boy had burnt ends on it and the cheesy corn received high praise for the 3 that ate it. The ribs were good, they need a little more dry rub on them, but they had a great smoke to them and they fell off the bone. The corn bread which I did not try do to dairy in it was exclaimed by the other 4 to be the best corn bread they have ever had. It is a sugar crusted corn bread. Soft and gooey in the center and sugar crust on the top. They only have one sauce and it is zesty. The more you eat the hotter it gets, but it is tasty. Just go easy on it. The owners greeted each and every person as the entered and explained the menu and how to order. They said the menu and ordering style was a cross between Chipotle and Pei Wei. It was a perfect description. You had a board with all the items and you stepped up to the counter/station and placed your order to specifications watching them as the made it. This is sure to be a hot spot and I think a new favorite of ours. read more

B+ This, along with SLAPS, is the best sausage I've had in KC and let me tell you, I've tasted lots of sausage in this town! Came here for a birthday celebration for my wife's side of the fam and everything was solid. Fries are amazing and so were the onion straws. Also had the ribs and they're great. Atmosphere lacks character but was very sanitary and clean. Located in the affluent section of Olathe right off k-10, this place is a great representation of KC bbq. I hear their burnt ends are tops! I think this is a nice attempt, but just doesn't quite work. The staff is super friendly and the restaurant is sparkling clean. Unfortunately, the food just doesn't quite measure up. I ordered the ribs and they came out nice and hot and plenty tender. They were also really really small. Probably 1/3 of the size you would get at Gates or Jack Stack. They cost less then a half stack at either of those other barbeque places, but still shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath. The potato salad was fairly generic, almost like it was store bought instead of a family recipe. My companion tried one of the barbeque bowls. There was a good amount of fried onions on the top of the bowl so it took a little bit to clean them off and get to the food. The bowl was decent. The chicken was the best part, thoroughly cooked yet still nice and tender. The burnt ends were tough, the sausage just not what sausage should be and the potatoes a little rough. The tried the original sauce which was kind of sweet, but truly lackluster. It just didn't have enough kick in it, like a good barbeque sauce should have. I'm so glad I did! Although different from what I'm used to, it was terrific. Meat fell off the bones of the ribs. Pulled pork and burnt ends were juicy and tender. The cornbread was freaking amazing!!! And this cheapskate's favorite part of the meal? Free kids meals with purchase of adult meals! What? Seriously? Awesome sauce! We frequent this place because it's close to home. Larry LOVES the burnt end burrito. It's huge, I've never seen him eat the whole thing. They've also got this cornbread that looks more like desert. Larry is a big fan. The sausage is awesome, probably the best around. Sometimes the ribs are AMAZING, and sometimes they're just ok. I think they get dried out? A couple of times I've even had to toss them. Wish they had better quality control on the ribs. Cuz when they're good they're better than good, if ya know what I mean. Entered the store in Olathe, KS on Sunday afternoon. The staff was very unfriendly. Not one person made I eye contact or even cracked a smile. We asked to see the ribs and they looked at us like we were foreigners. Verdict: Ribs were dry and salty. Baked beans were mostly out of the can pork and beans. Coleslaw was meh. I have driven by this place numerous times thinking it was just another BBQ restaurant wannabe- I was so wrong! I am on a keto type diet and ordered 1/2 rack of ribs and Carolina style slaw for my side. The ribs were the best I have ever had, needed no BBQ sauce, the flavor is infused in the meat. Ok Carolina slaw is not usually my preference, creamy Cole slaw is another option. However, even this less sweeter version of slaw was very good.
