Every time I go to the Sage, it's like I'm headed to my grandmother's house for the best food I always treasured in my childhood. I still remember the first bowl of creamy broccoli soup I ate here when I was a freshman in high school. The soup is still quality and the sandwiches and salads only add to the fantastic menu. You can enjoy half a sandwich, a cup of soup, and a beverage for under ten bucks. The restaurant can get a bit noisy around noon but if you can hold of until one or two, it's a great place to meet up with friends. The Sage is in downtown McMinnville so after eating, you can walk and shop around downtown to complete the downtown Mac experience. read more

We had lunch about a week ago and had an interesting experience. We sat down about 1pm. As soon as we sat down our server promptly came to our table to take our drink and food order. We didn't even have time to look at our menu yet so we just ordered drinks. Our drinks came in a timely fashion which was great. But... then she never came back to take our order. Finally another woman came by and asked if our meal was finished and if we needed our check. We told her we still haven't even ordered yet! She apologized and took our order. When we received our food the order was wrong. It wasn't a huge deal since it was just the soup. But what really got me was when the original server came back to give us our check. I was still eating my lunch! If she was just dropping a check at the table it would be one thing. But she was literally standing at the table asking my husband for payment and running our card as I was trying to enjoy my meal.Could she not wait a few more minutes? The entire dining room was full. It wasn't like she was waiting on just us. So we were rushed at the beginning of our experience and then forgotten about and then practically kicked out. As someone that has worked and managed restaurants for over 20 years this was pretty terrible. The tiny size of the restaurant and the 3 hours of operation should be very manageable for just a couple servers. This situation should never have happened. read more

My favorite restaurant since childhood. I love the aroma of fresh baked bread as you enter the building. If you get to the staircase and there's a wait, the food is well worth it. Best cheese broccoli soup & wheat bread on earth. When I order a salad I always get marinated mushroom dressing AND the Swiss garlic dressing, great combo! Perfect soup, salad and sandwich's! Meh. My family just moved to Oregon from NC. It's been a grueling three weeks of driving across the country in bad winter weather, only to arrive and find that our house closing was going to be delayed two weeks. (Unplanned tasks: renting a storage unit, finding temporary lodging for ourselves, big dog, and two cats... you get the picture.) So when I saw SAGE in nearby McMinnville I was eager to give it a try; warm tasty homemade soup and a comforting atmosphere was just what I needed! Sage definitely hit the mark with the cozy atmosphere. Upstairs from a shop, it's warm and welcoming. I arrived around 2 pm (they close at 3:30) and at least half of the tables were occupied. I was greeted in about 30 seconds by a kind and friendly server. She called me (and everyone else she waited on) "honey" and was quick to tend every table. When I was finishing up she asked me if I wanted a to-go refill of my iced tea. Extra nice! Sadly, my soup wasn't all that great. I ordered a bowl of what appeared to be one of their signature items, cream of broccoli. Let's just say it was THICK soup. I mean, really thick - too gloopy for my taste, honestly. It wasn't very hot, either, which may have contributed to the consistency. Taste was fine, but bland and forgettable. Generous serving of bread was clearly homemade, but they seem to have perfected a Wonderbread-like texture in their loaf. Personally, that's not what I look for in scratch-made bread. All in all a bit disappointing. I'll probably go back & give Sage another shot, just because the staff was so nice and I need to explore McMinnville more. read more

My mom and I recently went to this restaurant and had a very disappointing experience. Everything started out normal, we were seated and asked for what drinks we would like. We ordered and the food came at a typical pace. This experience would have been an average one if it wasn't for the prejudiced environment. We are POC and we noticed that a few Caucasian customers kept looking at us. We tried to ignore this, but it was still disappointing to experience. The food itself was mediocre considering the prices. The broccoli cheddar soup was particularly unpleasant. During our meal, our server was not very attentive. We were not offered water or drink refills, or even checked on. We could've attributed this to how busy the restaurant was but we could see the servers checking up on other tables periodically. We did, however, notice another table with a Hispanic couple and they seemed to also not be checked on. The mistreatment became very clear when our server came to charge us for our meal and did not even look at us while using her device, she was chatting with the table next to us instead. It would be one thing if the server had to take their order to keep the pace going, but they were talking nonchalantly while we were waiting for the check to be completed. Overall, this place was not as welcoming to us as it is to others. I do think that in this day and age, it's pathetic to have to write a bad review for how we were treated because of our skin color. read more

Been here a handful of times, and always enjoy coming back. It's a locally owned spot, which always helps, and it always feels like you're getting that personal touch. The food is excellent and the service is great. The Sage Club is my favorite sandwich, and there's soups are always a great choice. I'll definitely keep coming back. Loved this place! It's located in such a cute part of town, inside a shop. Gets super busy at lunch but we were happily seated when a table got up and they also were more than happy to clean it real quick. We both had half a sandwich and the creamy broccoli soup. Restaurant after restaurant was closed - don't people have lunch on Tuesdays in Oregon? Oh forget it. I guess we'll just take a break and shop a little - clearly we were giving up. But then the group caught a glimpse, and then a full view - a sandwich oasis hidden away in the back, accessible only by people in the know. Like a speakeasy during the darkest days of prohibition. As a reward, at the summit of our sandwich satisfaction, I went for the roast beef half sandwich with the horseradish sauce, and a cup of the cream of mushroom soup. Excellent! The soup was full of sliced mushrooms, and the brothy base was rich and mushroomy too. The sandwich was on soft, thick bread, and the horseradish sauce on the side was the perfect complement to the delicious roast beef. I'm not a pickle guy, but here was a big one, and bread with a bit of butter rounded off the plate. Wonderful! A true McMinnville treasure. read more

I have lived in McMinnville for 2 years and I can't believe I've gone that long without trying this place! I've always heard good reviews but every time I'd go by there would be a wait so I never bothered to try it. Today I stopped by on a Wednesday afternoon and they were still pretty busy but I was able to get a seat at the bar area. I can honestly say this is the freshest tasting meal I have had in McMinnville. The broccoli soup was so yummy and went great with the bread. The side salad was so fresh and topped with their own thousand island dressing that was amazing! I also treated myself and got a chocolate cupcake which was also very tasty. Loved this place. Very busy on a Friday afternoon, but tables were available so we were able to sit immediately. Restaurant sits on the mezzanine level, inside a store on 3rd Street. The food was so fresh...homemade bread for sandwiches, Clam Chowder was so good. My BLTA was perfection with fresh avocados. Husband had Turkey Cobb Salad with homemade blue cheese dressing.
