This was a recommendation from one of my friends. We dined there during brunch hours a few months ago. As soon as you walk in you can feel the soft ambiance, see lovely notes and a few pictures on the wall. It's a bit small but the service is amazing. Customers order at the register then sit down; while waiting the waiter/waitress come around to check on you. Once the food comes out; it's brought to the table and they make sure you have everything you need. All the food is made from scratch and you can tell how much love was put into it by the first bite. I order a breakfast sandwich with a side fries water. My friend got a burger with a side fries and coca cola. Our food was sooo good and we will definitely come back. Next time we will be trying the dessert and other meals on the menu!!! By the way it is a bit limited and the dining hours end by 3pm I believe. read more

I was initially so happy to find this place. This is the second time we've ordered from Salty Chefs. The first time was amazing...I ordered the BLT and Matt got the breakfast burrito. We were both super happy with our selections and were eager to have the opportunity to try more. They seem to be known for scratch cooking and locally sourced produce...so, I was pretty disappointed this time when I ordered a side of turkey sausage with my pancakes. It's very obviously a mass produced frozen product. It's exactly like Banquet or Hormel brown n' serve frozen turkey sausage links that you can get from Walmart. It was super spongy inside and the outside was browned but wrinkly and soggy. The taste wasn't awful or anything...I just expected much better. Another recent reviewer mentioned that their chicken cutlet was a strange texture and, by the waiter's admission, the restaurant orders it precooked. This doesn't seem to align with their philosophy of scratch made and local. The pancakes were ok. The flavor was nice but they were pretty dense. I wouldn't order them or the turkey sausage again. I'm not giving up on Salty Chefs yet though!! I know they have some great food, I'll just try different items on the menu to find it...but I'm not super patient when it comes to spending our hard earned money. We stopped by for lunch while we were waiting for passports. It was a good decision. We had eggs and bacon, grilled cheese with a salad, and a cheeseburger with fries. The food in general deserves pretty good grades, with the burger and salad on top and the eggs bringing up the rear. The counter service was very helpful and tolerant of our ignorance. Prices were a little high, but the portions were quite large. We'll return in 10 years when the passport expires. read more

Wow this was an absolutely incredible find in the heart of the city. The reality is a lot of other people had already found it because from the time we walked in around 1:30 until we left they were really busy ... for a good reason! Great food ... superb atmosphere including the view and top notch service, not sure where that salty chef was. The grilled cheese was one of the most amazing sandwiches you will ever see much less enjoy!! Their burger yummm and the soups oh so good!! There are challenges with the parking system out front so bring quarters!! I even got the secret code to the rest room!! Oh, and the prices are less than those chain "fast food places" and for a better price you get great homemade food at a great price with superb service with a great view and atmosphere all in downtown Buffalo but I think I said that already!! read more

If you're looking for a place downtown for breakfast or lunch, definitely stop by. We visited after a medical appointment. So impressed with the level of comfort from the scratch-cooked meals. The Salty Chefs themselves were so welcoming, it felt like being at Mom & Dad's or going to Gramma's for a home-cooked meal. The family that owns & operates it was so friendly...Dad took our order, gave a little sample of the delish soup before we ordered it. We met the "Mom Chef" when she visited us table side to see how things were...when I joked I wanted the recipe for her dessert, she kindly explained how she made it! We admired her t-shirt & a few minutes later her son visited our table to let us know where he purchased it for her. The soup was spectacular, our special sandwich was chock full of delicious smoky meat, the salad was fresh & filling, a generous portion with a hombaked roll & a side of white balsamic vinaigrette I wish I could buy a bottle of. The leftovers (aplenty, due to such nice serving sizes) were carefully packaged for us in sustainable paper packaging & no fuss foil. If you're craving some food matzo ball soup-this is the place for you. I got a bowl of this soup which came with really good bread and butter. Everything tasted high quality and fresh ingredients were used. I also got a side of fries which you could tell were also freshly made, very good. I work downtown so I frequent this place a good amount. And let me tell you, your dollar goes a long way! It's more food than really any person needs for lunch, and everything is really good and home made. Just a small mom and pop run lunch spot, but it's got to be arguably the best lunch in the city. They always have fun and delicious specials every week, as well as fresh sweets. The corn chowder is amazing, and the breakfast sandwich is huge for $6! The sauteed salmon wrap was excellent. Little tip, if ordering to go get the salsa on the side as to keep the wrap from getting soggy. The ghost pepper chili was very hearty and not too spicy. While the staff was friendly, I didn't have a good food experience at TSC. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap...and the chicken cutlet had a strange texture, and I thought it was undercooked. I flagged to our waiter and he informed me that the chicken was not undercooked as they receive the chicken fully cooked from a vendor, but sometimes the texture is weird. That was certainly an odd and unsettling response. I chose not to eat the wrap, and it wasn't until 30 minutes later and plate still untouched did he ask if I wanted anything else. By that point, my friend had finished her meal, and I was turned off and not interested in anything else. He did drop off a cookie and scone at the end of the meal with the check which I paid in full Maybe just don't order the chicken. My friend liked her fish and chips. read more

I feel fortunate to have discovered this fine establishment! One of their slogan's is "Food with Attitude!" and believe it--the attitude is 100% positive. I sensed that this is a family-run restaurant because they made me feel welcome and special. So far, I've tried the BLT and the Bacon Bleu Burger. So so good. Salty Chefs is going to be one of my go-to restaurants for lunch. Highly recommend! PS. The super heavy chocolate brownie puck...I can't--want another one. I split it with four other people. I placed an online order and it was ready by the time I got there. I didn't dine in but there were several people doing so during the lunch hour. I ordered the House Made Vegan Sweet Potato ShroomBurger with balsamic vinaigrette mixed greens. My first impression was positive as I opened the box and saw so many colors! The burger itself tasted good but was too soft. So soft that most of it slid right off the bun as soon as I picked it up, as a smooth paste consistency. I didn't notice a sauce on the burger but it was topped with a piece of lettuce, shredded carrots, strawberries, blueberries, and walnuts. The combination of ingredients was good though. I really enjoyed the salad and the dressing, but was disappointed when I found a moldy tomato in the salad. Overall I'd be willing to come back but wouldn't get this burger again. read more

Tried out this Downtown lunch establishment this past Friday . It was my coworkers birthday and 6 of us went out for lunch, as I heard they had a pretty extensive lunch menu . Overall , I enjoyed my meal but beware - for a burger with fries , a bottle of water and tax/gratuity , it was a $25 lunch . Ouch ! Not a cheap lunch . The Buffalo Morning burger was tasty - lots of flavor with the mushrooms , egg , cheese . My fries were thin -which is how I prefer them - but definitely over cooked . Also , 4 of us were served their food right away . Another colleague and I had to wait an additional 15 minutes for our food - our coworkers were wrapping up with their meal by that time . They were all burger orders besides 1 chicken sandwich - so I am a bit baffled as to why the food wasn't timed out to be completed all at once . I would come back for maybe a soup or breakfast . I would avoid the burgers if you are in the mood for a cheaper and quick meal during your lunch hour . read more

I had the most delightful experience here when I was in Buffalo for an expedited passport appointment, and had several hours to fill between my appointment and passport pickup. This restaurant is just a couple doors down from the passport office, and when I saw it was open until 3 PM, which was when I was due back at the passport office, I thought it looked like the perfect place to wait. As soon as I walked in I was cheerfully greeted by Donna, who is truly a gem. I explained what I was doing, and asked if it would be OK if I hung out for several hours until it was time to go back and pick up my passport. She looked a little concerned, and told me that it would be fine, but that they did expect patrons to make a purchase. I realized I hadn't made myself clear, so I smiled and said that I would definitely be eating lunch there, I was just concerned whether it would be okay for me to take up a table for three hours. She laughed and said that was absolutely fine. She was delightful and upbeat, and made me feel incredibly welcome the whole time I was there. The special that day was two latkes, which, as she told me was in honor of Hanukkah. How could I refuse fresh latkes? I also ordered a bowl of corn chowder, and a bottle of Diet Pepsi. The chowder came out first, with a couple small biscuits on the side which she mentioned she had made fresh that morning, and they were flavored like everything bagels. Both the chowder and the biscuits were fabulous. Next came the latkes, which were billed as coming with both sour cream and applesauce. That's exactly how I like them. What I didn't anticipate was that the applesauce was actually a chunky apple compote. It was absolutely heavenly - perfectly seasoned and so unusual and tasty. The latkes were amazing, too - large and freshly made. About 45 minutes before I was due to leave, I decided I would also try the hot cider. Donna brought the large mug to my table, and, like everything else, it was delicious. If you were ever in Buffalo, and looking for a place to have lunch, I highly recommend The Salty Chef's. Now I just have to figure out a reason to go back to Buffalo so I can go there again! read more

The location was easy to find. You walk into a cute restaurant that was filled with magazine recipes on the wall. It was such an easy process to order. The only thing difficult was trying to figure which of the delicious food I was going to order. I needed up getting the breakfast platter and adding a pancake. The food came out fresh! I've wanted to stop in here for a while. The space is quite unassuming and comfortable. When I walked in, I was immediately greeted and shown the menu options - including their Restaurant Week selections. I opted for the RW combo of breakfast burrito and soup for $15.00. My soup was served quickly. It was in a deep mug adorned with a piece of bacon and an optional dollop of sour cream. The soup was creamy, cheesy and absolutely delicious. The soup was served with a roll that was super soft and delicious (if only there were some butter!). I saved it to take home snd eat. The burrito (and salad) were served soon after. The burrito looked fantastic and tasted - WOW! it was very flavorful and served with some needed sour cream because it had some heat to it. I've stated in other reviews that I'm very picky about eggs. The eggs could have been fluffier as they do in Europe - rather than the typical American style. I'm not complaining, "just saying." So the burrito could have come with fries or salad; I chose salad because I didn't want fries. The salad looked good, but it was a bit list on me because I'm not always in the mood. The salad dressing options were vinegarette or ranch - I chose ranch. I thought I'd try the dressing and I was pleasantly surprised; since I had run out of SC, I used the ranch on what was left of my burrito. The dressing was tangy (from vinegar) / but also from dill - it was really really quite good. The serving dishes were real, but the utensils were plastic. The napkins were high quality. I needed to use the restroom, but where was it?! I HIGHLY recommend this establishment; I will certainly be back to try more of their offerings. Addendum: I complimented the chefs / owners and one of them asked if she could give me a hug. Of course! As an evolving home chef, it's so gratifying to know your food makes someone happy. read more
