Price was very fair, and when they couldn't get the car done same day because the wrong part was sent, he promptly sent his driver to take me to Enterprise to get me a rental for the evening so I wouldn't be out of a car. My family has been taking their Hondas here for years. Brian has always been so honest and helpful. My favorite story goes back a few years ago. I was in the city and my car was making some god-awful noise. I didn't think it was safe to drive back across the Bridge so I had it towed to the Service Outlet. The next day Brian's crew took my car out and it wasn't making any noise. Rather than just leaving it at that, they offered for me to come to the shop and take my car out with a mechanic. The noise was still not there. The mechanic figured that I had something stuck in my wheel well that came out while being towed. So many places would charge you a bunch for their time or find something else that wasn't really wrong. Instead, they didn't charge me a thing. Truly an honest mechanic. read more

After my previous auto mechanic changed his business model to discontinue work on Hondas, I had to find a new place that wasn't the dealer. My boss had been going to the Service Outlet for his numerous Honda and Acura cars, so I thought I'd give them a try. I was nervous as I was personal friends with my previous mechanic, and my experience in the past with other mechanics wasn't always stellar. The service manager took time to explain to me what was needed on my first visit, and also told me that specific timelines would be approaching for semi-major tuneups. I've been very happy with the work and customer service, and feel the service managers advocate for my car's well-being, and not at the expense of my checkbook. read more

I stupidly let Walmart do my last oil change and they didn't place the gasket on the oil filter correctly as it caught caught in the threads allowing all but 1/2 a quart of oil pump right out of my engine. So in this emergency with a car flashing all the dash lights at me and suddenly stalking on me in the middle of the road the guys at The Service Outlet was able to squeeze me in and get me taken care of immediately. I have been coming to the service outlet for probably 13 years now. They have always been trustworthy and helpful. I had just had a 60k mile check up recently and soon after my battery seemed to have died when out with my kids. I made an appt and brought the car in to be looked at. They were going to check the alternator, battery, starter, and plug it into the computer to look for errors. They also changed out my battery on my key fob and let me know a lot of cars have been getting flooded with the recent rains. I have a brand new baby and when I mentioned i would grab the car seat base to get a ride home, they said I could drive my car home and they would drive it back to be looked at and then they would also drop it off to my house again when they were done. This was so immensely helpful and above and beyond. They found out that it was in fact the battery and it needed to be replaced. They mentioned that aaa would have a better warranty and provided that as an option for me if I wanted to go that direction. I have never been let down by this business and will continue here for years to come. Great customer service! read more

Had heard nothing but great things about this place from 4 different people. Tried it out myself a few times for small things like oil changes, etc. My engine blew a few weeks back (right before Thanksgiving weekend!) and I reached out to Michael (the manager there) and he got me in right away. He was very upfront with me about the labor costs, what it would take, what he recommended and helping explain all things car related. Comes with much experience. Went to get a leak in my transmission fixed and I was ready to fork over a fortune because another shop had told me it would be a large job. I wanted to get a second opinion and also my friend who use to be a service tech recommended this shop to me. They found out my brake pads had been worn out and was dangerously close to causing other larger problems as well which I was not surprised because I couldn't remember how long ago I changed them out. They didn't try to sell me any other BS services like other shops I've been to. I always have my service tech friend check the work that any shop does after and he says they did a really good job for a modest price. The gentlemen there are extremely courteous and friendly as well. Quick service as well, but that does depend on your vehicle's issue at hand . Plus they have a shuttle for your convenience. I lived in San Ramon for 25 years and moved across the Bay a few years ago but have not found an auto repair shop I trust. I had never taken my cars to the Lafayette location, but the Service Outlet in San Ramon took care of many of my cars over the years before it closed during the pandemic. I figured it would be worth the trip to Lafayette for the major service my CRV needed. I work in downtown Oakland so I figured I could take BART back, but they told me they would drive me to Oakland and pick me up. Well that worked out awesome and the driver was friendly and efficient. When Art called and suggested that I should get additional work done if I was planning on keeping the car a long time, which I am, I was hesitant at first. He explained to me in great detail and with great patience the additional work that they recommended and gave me the pros and cons of waiting for later to do the work or just having it done at that time. I felt confident that the work would be done correctly as the Service Outlet had always done amazing work and kept my cars running smoothly for a long time, so I felt good getting it all done at that time, and I am glad I did as my kids will be using the car away at college and I feel great knowing that the car is in top repair. The whole customer service experience was like Nordstrom level of service, and that is very unusual these days to find that in a car repair shop. READ THRU BEFORE YOU USE THIS SHOP, AND PLEASE NOTE that 3 of the reviews giving 5 stars were for service when the former manager Brian still ran the shop. Changes in management have, in my experience, changed this shop from an honest repair shop to one that is all about sales quotas, to the point of recommending work that is not necessary. I have been going to the Service Outlet in Lafayette for over 9 years. For many of those years I brought two cars in for regular services & any problems that came up. Since change in mgmt, I have gone in two times with my 1995 Lexus. 1st time was for an oil change. The second time was for a minor service (oil change, tire rotation, brake check, fluid check, etc). After 4 hours or so, I got a call from one of the managers. He said they were almost done, but wanted to alert me to some repairs that were urgent. There was a power steering leak, as well as a transmission leak and both bushings on the front control arm were badly torn, so both control arms should be replaced. Estimate about $2500 + transmission. Orig estimate was $4000, but in a 2nd call, was revised to $2500. They said we should get the power steering leak fixed immediately, as it was extremely dangerous to drive the car for any distance because the power steering fluid was all over the engine, and very flammable so there was risk of fire. In addition, they could see the transmission fluid (because it is a different color) but could not tell how bad it was until they fixed & cleaned up the power steering fluid. They recommended doing the $2500 then coming back after a week so they could trouble shoot the transmission. I told them I needed to think & talk to my husband, and would pick up the car. They said I could drive it home, but should not drive the car. I called another mechanic for a 2nd opinion. He had worked on my other cars. I made an appoint, took the paperwork from the Service Outlet & asked that they check everything out. (No charge) They checked the fluid levels, then showed me how the power steering fluid & transmission fluid were identical in color, because they are the same exact fluid. He said newer cars have different colors, but not this car. He then put the car on the lift & after five minutes, asked me to come & take a look under the car with his mechanic. They showed me that there were some indications of a minor oil leak (coming from the cam seal, which we knew about) & there was a little fluid they could see but nothing that appeared to be leaking badly & no fluid was reaching the area where there was a fire danger. They also showed me the rubber bushings - one had slight cracking in the rubber, but not torn, the other had no cracking. They made marks on all the fluid containers, & recommended driving it for a week (no danger), then bring it back for a followup check. If there were major leaks, the fluid levels would drop. They said there was nothing serious they could see, but if anything recommended replacing the control arms, because of the age of the car, to help with handling. I returned a week later to have the control arms replaced, and none of the fluid levels had changed at all. I will never go back to the Service Outlet, and will warn people about them. In my opinion, they lied, or at the very least exaggerated the problems, using scare tactics like "there is risk of a car fire if you drive this car" to push me into a $2500, and potentially much higher cost repair (if we had let them replace the transmission) Response to Marc: I had no issues up until the last visit, but when I was told that I should not drive my car because the power steering leak was so bad it might catch fire (2nd opinion showed me that leak was minimal & not flammable) and was told that they could tell there was a transmission leak & steering system leak because of the different color of the fluids (2nd opinion showed me my car did not have different color fluids) I can only assume that I was presented misleading information. I have had no contact with Brian since he left, don't even know where he is, and have no connection to any other service shop. I am just reporting what happened, and if any reasonable person reads all the other reviews & discounts mine, then you have nothing to worry about. read more

I have taken my Lexus to the Service Outlet 7 or 8 times to be serviced. The last time we went, the service manager Brian was no longer there. I asked them to check the heater as it was not working. We were given a call later that day informing us that we needed a brake job and transmission fluid. I trusted that they knew what they were talking about, and told them to go ahead with the job. However, my husband keeps copious notes on services in the past. When he looked at our records he noticed that the brake job was done only 12,000 miles ago (the work was done at the Service Outlet). Brakes typically last at about 30,000. Also the transmission fluid was changed 10,000 ago (also done at the Service Outlet) which also typically lasts about 30,000. When my husband mentioned that both of these services had been performed by The Service Outlet and asked why they were suggesting this work be done they had no answer. In addition upon saying goodbye, the man at the service center thought he had hung up the phone and my husband overheard him saying something about making easy money to someone else (whom we think was the mechanic) We took our Lexus to WheelWorks and they said we had over 60% of the brake pads remaining and no work was required. This company is not to be trusted. We will not be taking our Lexus back to them. read more

I had a really bad experience with the Service Outlet. Marc, the owner, has finally responded (see below). Just like when I first raised my complaint, he took forever to respond. In the case of my complaint, it took several emails and phone calls and nearly a month to get a return call from him. In the case of the low Yelp rating, which I told him I would write, it took him over 6 months for him to respond. Instead of addressing my poor service or explaining what he had done to improve service, he instead says "people love his new advisors". In looking at the reviews over the past six months, I find six: two good (5 stars), two middling (2 or 3 stars) and two bad (1 star). So, to say everyone loves the Outlet's new advisors is a bit misleading, although the last reviewer did say he was very impressed. That said, I will tell you who has impressed me, Concord Acura. We've been taking our car there since giving up on Marc and have found them to be professional, courteous, prompt and less expensive than the Outlet! They even detail the car each visit regardless of the service you have performed. For my money, they are a better deal and worth driving a bit further. read more

My wife took our 2003 Pilot here last week to check out some noise under the hood. After the inspection, she was told she needed new brake pads and rotors at all four corners ($1000), and a new steering pump ($700), and new sway bar links ($350). They said all brake pads were at 1mm or less, and rotors were worn out. She got home with the written estimate, then I inspected the car (I am ASE certified brake mechanic in a former profession). 1) Front brake pads are at 5mm. Front rotors show no measurable wear! I put these on the car just 15k miles ago, so that's expected. GRRRR. 2) Steering pump has well-known air leak from bad o-ring (Honda has a technical service bulletin out regarding this exact issue). I bought the o-ring for $1.02 at the Honda dealer. 15 minutes of work and no noise from steering pump. 3) Sway bar links are new on the car! I put them on last summer. This place is a ripoff operation. If you don't know what you're dealing with (ie, you're not a car expert), all of these repairs would sound sensible and you'd write a good review on Yelp. I know better, and I'm pissed. I will be filing a formal complaint with the state Bureau of Auto Repair. read more

Stay away from these guys..they almost convinced me to let them do a unnecessary $3800 repair on my Honda. I dropped off my SUV (with 135,000 trouble free miles) to have them look at a fluid leak underneath the rear part of my car (my wife had noticed a small area in our garage with drops of pink oily fluid). I was told by William that the leaking pink fluid was Honda VTM-4 differential fluid and there was no way to fix the leak except to replace the ENTIRE rear differential assembly at a cost of $3800 parts & labor. Shocked at this huge bill, I asked if they checked the fill or drain plugs to see if the bolts or the gaskets were worn out or not tightened properly (common sense right?) and he flat out told me that the leak was coming from an area on the rear differential unit that Honda does not recommend disassembling so replacement of the differential was my only option...basically saying that I had about 2 weeks before my rear differential seizes up due to lack of VTM fluid and I would be stuck on a road somewhere. Something smelled fishy to me so I brought my vehicle back to Walnut Creek Honda where I normally have my car serviced and they were nice enough to take a look at the leak for me. So ladies and gentleman - guess what the problem was? Honda tech discovered the threads on the differential fluid drain bolt were worn and was causing the slow fluid leak. Total cost for replacement bolt, washer, and labor was less than $100. I'm so happy that I had the gut feeling that something was not right with the Service Outlet "diagnosis" earlier in the day - or we would've been FOUR THOUSAND dollars poorer for no reason whatsoever. You can bet neither my wife or I will bring our vehicles back to the Service Outlet in Lafayette ever again after this experience. read more

I just want to say I was very impressed by the service I received. No offense to the old management "Brian" but i never had a good experience when he was there. William and Daryl have improved the shop tremendously! My Toyota truck had a leak at the water pump and you MUST remove the timing belt to get to it. So after finding that out. I made a few calls and I found that the service outlet had the best pricing. After dropping my truck off they were able to give me a shuttle ride home. The turn around time was faster than I expected. They also found a couple minor fixes that could have been really bad had they not noticed them. I am very pleased with the out come and will definitely be returning for future services. read more

This updates my original review in response to comments by the owner. I went to the company's Lafayette branch to get an inspection before driving my old car to Las Vegas to be sure it was safe, and indicated that this is why I was getting this inspection. They recommended a minor inspection and since they assured me it would be safe, I got the air conditioning fixed. Had I not relied on their assurance, I would not have gotten this fixed and would have flown to Las Vegas and rented a car. But two days after I got to Las Vegas, the car broke down because of leaks in the radiator and thermostat problems, leaving me with the option of paying about $750 for repairs, but even then I was advised the car might not make it because a gasket could blow, requiring another $1600 for repairs. Rather than driving home as planned, I spent about 10 hours dealing with the breakdown and getting an assessment of the problem from a gas station mechanic, Pep Boys, and the Toyota service center in Las Vegas. Due to the cost and safety concerns of getting stuck in the 250 mile Mojave Desert, I bought a new car I couldn't really afford. I felt that the Service Outlet had some responsibility for what happened given their assurances my car would be safe to drive to Las Vegas. Then, when I contacted the company based in San Ramon about at least getting a refund for the air conditioning repair which I wouldn't have gotten had I not driven to Las Vegas, the owner not only refused to take any responsibility or provide any refund, but was insulting to me, disparaged my detailed letter of problems which had been reviewed by an attorney before I sent it, and claimed that if I tried to take this to small claims court, he would bring his lawyer and I would have to pay his legal expenses (when in fact, lawyers aren't allowed in small claims court). Here's my response to the owner's comments: First, my name is Gini. Secondly, my car had 144,000 miles on it, not 180,000 miles. Third, the heat in Las Vegas during that period was 105 degrees not 116. Fourth, and most significantly, I originally brought the car in for what Toyota calls a mini or minor inspection to make sure my car was safe to drive to Las Vegas. I advised the service manager of my plans for this trip and my concern that the car be safe to drive there. I was aware that the car hadn't been serviced for some time, since I only drove about 2000 miles in 2 years and I didn't need an A/C repair for local driving. It was only after I was assured the car would be safe to drive to Las Vegas that I authorized the A/C repair due to the high heat there. Had I had any warning of the risks of taking my car to Las Vegas due to the heat, I would not have authorized the A/C repair which I didn't need for local driving and I would not have driven to Las Vegas. I would have flown and rented a car. I have since done extensive research, and there is a duty to warn under certain circumstances, such as when one looks to someone who claims to be an expert in something, as would be the case in taking a car to a mechanic for an inspection or repairs. I have very little knowledge about cars, and so I looked to your service manager or mechanic for this advice in asking if my car would be safe to drive to Las Vegas, and only drove it there and arranged for these repairs based on those assurances. Knowing about the risks of taking an older car there, as you have suggested in your response to me, the manager should have given me a warning, but didn't, perhaps because I would then authorize the repairs. I initially only asked for a refund of the cost of repairs, which I would not have made but for the assurances my car would be safe to drive to Las Vegas with these repairs, and that would settle the matter. I did not originally ask for anything for the cost of the car which I had to purchase, given the cost of additional repairs to the radiator system, and the dangers of other systems in the car failing on the drive through a 250 mile desert, which could be deadly. The possible problems in these other systems were not identified in the inspection. But in your phone call to me you responded to my offer with insults and threats of legal costs should I pursue this, though there are no lawyers involved should I take this to small claims court or seek a refund through a claim to my MC account. You also did not respond to the letter from my lawyer affirming my claim for a refund. Also, I originally used your service, since your sign to service Toyotas suggests you are acting as an authorized, certified, or otherwise sponsored representative of Toyota, and I have long had an excellent relationship with Toyota for over 30 years. So this may have been an inappropriate use of the Toyota name to imply this representation, and had I been aware of this lack of authorization from Toyota as well as the negative Yelp reviews, I wouldn't have used your service. read more

My wife has been taking our 2001 Accord (185K miles) and our 2005 Pilot (100K miles) there for some time. Recently, my transmission began failing on my 2001 Accord (this was a known problem to the point that Honda extended the warranty to 7 years/100K miles). These guys were honest enough to tell me that while the transmission was -- in effect -- totaled and that the replacement was $7K or so. I asked if I could keep driving the thing. Their response: "Your transmission might last 20 miles; it might last 20,000. You can't make it worse." I thought that was a nice bit of advice. They treated me as though I could be trusted with honest information. There was no song-and-dance beyond that when the transmission fails, I could be stuck somewhere. I can live with that risk instead of dropping $7K on a new transmission on a pretty worn out car. Now, I haven't noticed any change with the service and we've been going for about 10 years. I'll double check with the wife, but any change has been transparent to us. In fact, the 2001 Honda is on its last legs and while I could buy any replacement car, my inclination is to buy a Honda in reliance on the fact that I can get good service of Service Outlet. That said, I would like know exactly *when* the management changed over so I can judge more specifically if there have been any problems, but I sure don't think I've seen any. read more

I had a "battery" light come on the dash a week after replacing the battery. I was on a trip an hour from home. The light went out until I was a few miles from home. I drove straight to the Service Outlet. I was tired, annoyed, and frustrated. They quickly handed me keys to a loaner vehicle and said they would call me when they knew what was wrong. Which they did in about 30 minutes. They had already ordered the part needed ( Alternator) and said they would call again when the work was completed. My vehicle has over 150,000, longest I have ever kept a vehicle, so rapairs are kind of a new thing for me. I was thankful for the detailed explanation, the loan of a vehicle, as I had AM appts the next day. Art and crew had my car ready to go before noon the very next day! William is so accommodating, a clear communicator, and provides the best service I have ever had on any product. First I would like to say, I'm very on top of things when it comes to my car. I am a female who doesn't know much about cars, and felt taken advantage of by this place. I was so excited when I found the service outlet only charged $55 for an oil change. So the first time I came here I told Chang I probably need my front breaks and an oil change and dropped off my car. Later that day they called me. They told me I need my back breaks and my front are fine on my 2013 Honda (first break change needed) and next time I change my oil I'll need my front breaks. I said okay. I told my grandpa and he said that was kinda odd they would do the back before the front, but I trusted them. So my next oil change I tell them the front probably need to be done and to check them. The lady calls me later that Friday and says " you have 30% left and you could do them now or wait a month." I figured I would wait. The lady responds "if they last that long" after she just told me they would.... ( didn't think much of it) I get to the shop and the front lady tells me that my 2013 Honda needs new routers and I have hotspots on my breaks. I respond "what do u mean? Doesn't the break wear and then then the routers would need to be done?" She responds "well some people drive on there breaks and some drive on there routers". I said Last time I came here you should have done my front breaks instead of my back if I was getting close to driving on my routers". Chang said "well Hondas from 2000-2008 needed there back breaks first". I said "mines a 2013". The lady then says to me "it's bad engineering, and it's probably like your third break change". I said no this is my first!" She said well you have hotspots and the noise is going to get louder if you don't get them done". I said I don't no much about cars but If that's the case you should have done my fronts the first time I came in". She said "don't worry will give you a good deal". I left and started crying, felt so played. I was freaking out that I had to buy new routers because this place conned me for money. I drove all the way to Livermore on Monday where I usually take my car. They told me I had 30% left on my breaks (like the service outlet originally told me) & that I had zero hotspots on my routers.
