Literally the cutest place to stop for lunch on your way out of town! We were looking for something quick, but didn't see any fast food around so we stopped by the Shack after grabbing gas. The service was far better than most restaurants in LA and the selection of food was quite extensive. Our sandwiches were delicious!! Neither of us are sandwich people, but these sandwiches were something else. The ratio of each of the toppings was spot on. The outdoor seating is very cute and perfect for an expedited meal. My husband recently started working at UCLA, and I promised him we would find a couple great lunch spots. First time is a charm! We were leaving the campus and I went random on maps for a spot to stop for lunch on the way, and this was the winner. After looking at reviews, I knew we chose correctly. To be honest, I don't remember what he got the first time, because while it was good, mine was better. The turkey club is freaking delicious. The sourdough bread was toasted to the perfect fineness that it didn't rip the roof of my mouth apart(my biggest odd complaint about club sandwiches). So far, I've had a Cobb salad, an everything bagel, a chicken sandwich, a pizza and several coffees from this location in the multiple times I've visited and have come to the conclusion that, while the food is above average, i just can't justify the prices. For a breakfast burrito and a small coffee, I paid $15. $15! I'd understand the price if the burrito was a decent size but it was small and didn't have enough egg, cheese or even sausage. Main reason I came here was because of the close proximity to work and it beats having to drive 15+ minutes to find a good place to eat. It's an excellent location. The Whack Shack is the new name for this place. The only thing they got good at this place is the location. There's not a whole lot of places to eat in the area and they know that. It sucks to have to drive 15 mins away to get something good to eat, so I settled here, but no mas. First time I got a Club Sandwich, pretty basic. If you want a way better Club Sandwich, go to Palisades Garden Cafe. That thing is amazing. This place? Nah. I think I tip them and it came out to $17 for the sandwich alone, pretty steep and not that great. Second time I got Nachos and with a $3 tip, came out to $22, outrageous. The chips were whack, STALE and extremely chewy. It took forever to chew through. Like chewing on Crunchy Leather. It was awful. The Guacamole was made from old avocados that didn't make it into the sandwiches. You know when they start to turn brown and get all those spots on them? It was dark guacamole. You can tell it was not good. Overall you'd probably get just as good of food at the AmPM or 7-eleven. Probably fresher too. Save your money guys, avoid the Whack Shack in the Back. read more

Was heading to the 405 and found this place because I was super hungry. Pleasantly surprised! Big menu, delicious BLT on sourdough. The staff is excellent. Quick turnaround. Parked in the alley there no problems because it's so close & the staff were so quick. Finished that BLT just as quick and jumped onto the 405 much happier. Well I came here based on a coworkers recommendation. Well sorry to say I have had better sandwiches at other places including the small little hamburger joints. Yes, I get the quality might be a little better, but for the price, I think it should have been a lot better. I had the pastrami. I ordered over the phone, about 10 minutes prior to be showing up, but when I got there it seemed like the people making the sandwich were too busy chit chatting and started making my sandwich when I got there. The place was not busy so not sure what was up with that. It was around 2:30pm In any event, if this was anywhere else, it should be in the back because I doubt I would come here again. Review for their Express spot and not the dine in: this place use to honestly be fantastic. They use to have the best croissants then switched. Their burritos were awesome, but then they recently made a tortilla change that taste exactly like the burrito tortilla from El Pollo Loco. There's a lot of changes, but none as much as their price changes. It seems like everyday their prices go up now. I had tolerated up until now. Items are no longer sensible, especially as food to-go. Burritos are like $11+ now, they changed my favorite breakfast prices, and don't get me started on the sandwiches. They nickle and dime u, a smear of avacado or just some cream cheese extra is charged like $2 or $3. The Shack is the best! I've been coming here for years. It is conveniently located for almost all of my drives, but I have stopped there just because it's some of the best food in this part of town. Quick, convenient, always good. The staff is loyal ( some have been there since day 1 ) friendly, and always eager to help. I've had hot food, smoothies, baked goods and if I'm with my kids, they always grab a candy bar. So happy The Shack exists! As a neighbor of this establishment, I've been coming here for the better half of these past four years. However, what started off as coming every other day, has now dwindled down into once every other couple of months. Customer service is completely non-existent here. I'm sure the owner(s) has a different perspective on this, because I've seen him come in and these guys pull up like little uppity marionette puppets when he's around. My biggest issue, is the staff's complete and utter inability to get orders right, and the astounding amount of waste they must go through in redoing these orders. Ordering here is like Russian Roulette. As somebody who hasn't eaten meat in near 20 years I don't appreciate taking a bite of my order only to get a mouthful of sausage or bacon. And sadly, this has happened more times here than I can even possibly count. What's even more frustrating is their handling of their mistakes. Nicely point out a wrong order, and you're treated like you're burdening them with your inconvenience. I've even had them redo an order, and they redid it again with another wrong order. Never once have they ever issued an apology. It's not a language barrier, it's an understanding and comprehension barrier, and these guys seemingly have zero interest in changing their ways. On the upside - the food quality is good, the location is highly convenient (for me at least), but sadly the price point, the bad attitudes, and the Russian Roulette in what you get vs what you get order is just not worth it at the end of the day. read more

Just ordered a quick roast beef on rye with mayo, mustard & Lettuce. I am not sure what they are trying to pass off as roast beef, but it isn't roast beef. It was some sort of brown texture, slick, tough and sliced very thin from a pressed form. Must have been some sort of canned meat. It was NOT a roast beef I have seen before. Not good! They forgot the mustard and the rye bread was hard and stale on the edges. Potato salad was terrific.
