In an effort to support more black owned businesses within the current climate I placed an order with this establishment thru Seamless. The first red flag should've went up when they called me after I placed my order to let me know that they were out of banana pudding. I didn't make a big deal out of it & accepted a substitution of sweet potato pie. I get my order and it's all messed up. I paid for an upgrade to white meat chicken and of course they sent dark meat. On top of that the sweet potato pie was burnt. When I called the restaurant to let them know my order was incorrect they tell me that we ran out of white meat. Really? You could've told me that when you called about the banana pudding. I don't eat dark meat so this was a total waste of food. All I got from the restaurant was 'I'm sorry.' No offer to correct it nor did they offer me a partial refund. I had to put in a complaint with Seamless in order to get my money back. I will give them this- the part of my order they got right was pretty good, which is why I gave them 2 stars instead of one. They don't have bad food but they seriously need to work on their customer service. read more

The good parts: The candied yams were tasty and so was the (small piece of) cornbread. The bad parts: The fried chicken was dry and tasted old. The mac and cheese was mushy and bland. The sweet potato pie tasted off. The lemonade was too sweet and not very lemon-y. The worst part: They were out of bread pudding, so they replaced it (without asking) with banana pudding (which I hate) and charged me for the switch! Rude. Bottom line: Amazing food, the friendliest staff you can imagine, and authentic ambiance. Pros: We ordered curry lamb and oxtail stew. Both were really tasty. Portions were beyond generous (two entrees fed a family of four). There is a very large selection of entrees and of sides. There are tons of veggie options. I really liked the string beans. You get corn bread when you order an entree which was cool. More pros: The staff are really nice. Just great people you can relate to. They also helped us make good food choices and didn't mind the mess our family made. The place is small, clean and the crowd is from the neighborhood, which to me means they like it. I ordered food via Ubereats and I was disappointed. The fried fish had too much batter on it, my mac & cheese was sweet and salty ,the steam veggies was mushy. I've been ordering from this restaurant for at least a year now. The meatloaf and jerk chicken are my favorite. However the customer service could improve. There were times I've paid $40-50 for my food only for it to be missing items when it arrive or the sides are wrong or they give me fried chicken instead of jerk. I use to order my food for delivery online so there was no way to have my order corrected. I thought I could avoid this by just picking up my food. Well today, after traveling over an hour just to pick up my food, I arrive yet again to receiving fried chicken instead of jerk. I ordered the 2 chicken combo and selected jerk. The cashier stated that the meal comes with the chicken you choose and the other chicken is automatically fried. She said I'm supposed to call and request only jerk chicken. This information is not listed on the food apps nor do the additional instructions give you the option to state your preference for the second chicken if I wanted to do that in the future. I've called this restaurant multiple times in the past when my order was wrong or missing the cornbread. Either the calls don't go through or no one answers the phone. She proceeded to tell me that I must keep the fried chicken because it was already put in my bag and she can't take it back. I stated I should receive my jerk chicken because it's what I requested and paid for but she still refused. So I was basically told I don't get what I order and pay for. We were preparing for our holiday party for two hundred employees. We wanted to try a new outside caterer instead of the usual spot. My boss located "The Soul Spot" and we looked over the menu. They offer so many different varieties of southern food. I was excited by the choices, so we went all out. Speaking over the phone we put the order under my bosses name and order two or even three of some items. We told them it should be delivered on the twentieth of December by 5pm. On the morning of the party I couldn't wait. Everything was ready, so I decided to call them one last time and confirm everything was going according to plan. When I called the first thing I heard wasn't "good morning" or "how can I help you?" It was "hold please!" I thought to myself "they must be busy" so I waited for about 7 minutes to be helped. When the lady came back on the phone, she immediately gave the phone to someone else and this would be what she did every time I called. They confirmed between 4:30 to 5pm. So I felt that was handled and moved on to other preparations. At around 5:20pm the food did not arrive so I called again. Same woman answered and gave the phone to someone else. I asked what time will the good be arriving and she said they guy just left. She then gave me his number and told me call him. I didn't call because I felt it was their job to make sure things went according to plan. By 5:30 he did show up in a regular white van. Some of the food was cold and some very hot. They didn't put it on a van with ovens so some of the food got cold. We had no time to look everything over so we rushed it to the kitchen and heated up as much as possible. I was told items that we ordered did not come so I called one last time. The same lady answered and without fail, she gave the phone to the other lady. I explained to her what was missing and she already knew and was sending it over. Finally with all the food in place and the guest arriving we began to serve the meals. The staff truly enjoyed everything. I wasn't such a fan. Maybe it was because of the headache getting everything together, but the food wasn't what I would had hoped. I am grateful everyone loved it and had a wonderful time. It's a coin toss weather we ever use them again. I guess I will leave it up to popular vote. If I had my way one hundred percent, we would already be looking somewhere new. read more

I ordered fried chicken with string beans and blackeyed peas and rice. I also ordered chicken and dumplings. FIRST: The fried chicken meal. I paid extra for breast and wing. What did I get a freaking leg and thigh. I don't care for these parts of the chicken! SECOND: The chicken and dumplings This was the worst and definitely not the southern chicken and dumplings my momma use to make. They really should take the soul food out of their name so that you won't mistake it for the southern cooking you think you are going to get. This some hybrid stuff being served. Best soul food I've ever eaten. I don't write reviews often but I had to for The Soul Spot because it is absolutely baffling that it only has 3.5 stars. I often get the Vegetarian Meal Dinner for $14 that comes with 4 sides and cornbread. I usually get mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, yams, and steamed vegetables and it is DELICIOUS. It fills me up so well and makes me feel so warm and fuzzy. I also one time dropped my airpod in the crack of their serving booth and the woman working spent like 10 minutes trying to get it out. Ive been going to this spot for a while. My favorite halal soul food spot lmfao soul spot. The food is always amazing especially the friend chicken, jerk chicken and mac and cheese. They recently updated the interior with new seating and such and it looks nice. I'm so glad I was able to find parking. This was just what I was looking for. The Jerk Chicken is as authentic as this (heavily Caribbean) Baychester, Bronx girl knows. Spicy, moist dark meat. Excellent. You know when it's home cooking because they aren't afraid to put spices in the food. Everything was well seasoned. I wanted to try their collards, but the way they were minced wasn't calling to me at all. I ordered the green beans instead, and the mac & cheese. Thank you for taking the time to drain all the bean juice! Many places have the rest of your food swimming in green bean juice which isn't like the pot liquor from collards that you actually want to sop up with your corn bread. The mac & cheese was dense (which is a good thing), cheesy and had lots of black pepper. Just like you get in your Auntie's house. So good. The cornbread was just okay. Second, I asked for a lil gravy on my mac n cheese but instead ended up with turkey tip soup because she poured so much gravy into the already cramped bowl. I guess this was her way of sticking it to me because I asked for the gravy after she had put the lid on the bowl Third, they need to use slotted spoons so they can drain the liquid off the things such as corn and greens. This is especially important considering they put everything in a single non slotted bowl. Fourth, the customer service is horrible. The one staff member, taller and lighter skin, attitude is nasty. She acted as if she was doing us a favor for taking our money. Fifth, the overall food is all that good...Mac n cheese lame - straight out the box... collard greens average...Turkey tips undercooked - what lil meat is on them should be falling off the bone...rice was mushy.. and the peach cobbler was "doughy"/half done and unsweet...topping it off it was all overpriced. I wish this was one of the times you could give no stars because this place is just that bad. To have subpar food and to serve it with a stank attitude, there is no way I would ever come back.
