Located on a quiet residential street in South St. Louis. Lots of street parking since this is the only business in the area. The Southside Smoke sandwich has pulled pork, a slice of smoked gouda, and caramelized onions served on a ciabatta roll. The amount of meat on this sandwich could easily make a a 2nd sandwich, or in my case, leftovers for lunch. We added both of their sauces (ones a little sweet, one's a little spicy) to make the sandwich nice and saucy. This is a cute, down home bbq place nestled among houses in the Bevo Mill neighborhood. Parking can be tricky, since it's pretty residential. We appreciated that you could order from your table via QR code, but our bar order never went through. We finally went to the bar, and the QR ordering system was offline. The bartender restored it, and we ordered dinner without a problem. I got the brisket which was melt-in-your-mouth outstanding. The fries were terrific as well. The Sweet Stella sauce perfectly complimented the meat. There was a singer with a guitar while we were there that was pretty good. The prices were a little high for what we got, but not so much so that it would prevent me from returning. I saw posts of old menus on Yelp, and it looked like prices have gone up quite a bit in recent years (like nearly everywhere else, I guess). We ordered the brisket, pulled pork, Mac and cheese, and Brussels sprouts. The meats were dry and were probably the last portion in the bin before they restocked and had new cuts. The Brussels sprouts were bland and the cotija cheese did not act as a proper seasoning. The Mac and cheese was low effort Velveeta. And the dinner rolls they provided had the texture of a brick and were unchewable. The employees seemed nice, but when one of them was, I'm assuming not on the clock, and sat at the bar with patrons to drink and talk it seemed a little unprofessional. Picked up a to-go order tonight, and it had been a while, so I forgot how out of this world this place is. We started with the pulled pork loaded fries, and they were to die for- a must get. I will also mention how much I appreciated that they were kind of DIY, so nothing was all gross and mushy by the time we got home, and there was no skimping on the toppings. My husband had the brisket plate, and loved it per usual. I'm not that into bbq normally (I know, I know) so I usually get the Frankie V Italian salami sandwich and it is so good, and also loaded. I was seriously full after about 4 bites. The Mac n cheese and baked beans are our favorite sides. Also, everything comes packaged really nicely- idk why that matters to me but it does, okay, and they give you plenty of sauce, which is also super appreciated! There was a band setting up, and it was really lively inside, so next time we will have to enjoy it inside! Date night Saturday with my wife. Love the location. Good sized dining area, nice bar and really big beer garden area. I had the Beef Brisket with beans and slaw. My wife had the pulled pork, beans and potato salad. The meats were amazing!! The pork was super tender with a wonderful smoked flavor. I had the Beef Brisket. It had an awesome smoky flavor and an excellent texture. Her potato salad was very flavorful and a good portion. My slaw was also very tasty. The winner of our meals was clearly the beans!! What a wonderful taste and flavor. They were definitely an outstanding accompaniment to the rest of the meal. I love trying new places and this was my first time here. I had no expectations but soon found that Sunday is the day to go. They have beef ribs which are worth the hefty price. Seriously only go on Sunday because the ribs are nothing short of amazing. My only knock is the service. The woman at the bar who takes the order is amazing but I felt weird because she told me not to "run out on me" because we had a big party. Last Thursday evening, we came into The Stellar Hog for the wonderful barbecue they are known for. Since the Bar Tender saw us walk in, I asked if we just sit anywheres, he nodded yes but did not say anything more, so we grabbed a couple of menus and sat at a table. There were only two other couples in the restaurant along with a young lady and gentleman Bar Tenders. After looking over the menu and deciding what to eat, we put our menus down in signal that we were ready to order. We sat for twenty minutes, no acknowledgment, though both Bar Tenders were looking at us as we were them. We sat for another ten minutes when the young lady who had been behind the Bar, headed to the restroom stopped by our table and said "I don't know if you know this, but order at the Bar". Now my question was how would we know that since there are no signs and barely any acknowledgment as we walked in. We got up and left. The food maybe great but they severely need to fix their customer service!!! We come every few weeks since these are my boyfriend's favorite ribs in the city. The service is always ultra nice and speedy, while the atmosphere is laidback. Yesterday they brought me the wrong food, since we discussed both options, and the waitress profusely apologized and fixed it without hesitation/complaint. If I wasn't 9 months pregnant and bacon didn't give me the worst heartburn, I would have given the wrong order a chance since it did look good lol If you're looking for good local food, this is definitely the place. This is easily the best bbq in St. Louis. Chef Alex Cupp is beyond talented and you need to make sure that you enjoy his creations. His specials are not to be missed. Right now he has a crawfish Mac and cheese that ups their already scrumptious Mac and cheese to a whole 'nother level. The smoked and fried shrimp po'boy is one of the best its kind I have ever had. The fact that he doesn't overcook the shrimp after employing 2 cooking techniques reflects the fact that he is a master of his craft. However, please don't sleep on his regular offerings. The white wall sandwich, the Redbird, the Smokey ruebenson, and the grimace are all classics worthy of their regular place on the menu. The attention to detail on the accouterments alone is worthy of note. The cut the juice and the bark is so savory and I can't get past the Brussel Sprouts either that Smokey roasted flavor captured is top tier and not over seasoned, just right. The best beef brisket that I've ever had!! Service was awesome!! Love the setting - nothing fancy. Even had games/toys for the kiddos.

The sides are good, chili not so much. The BBQ all tasted like it was doused with liquid smoke. No natural flavors. The award winning ribs were tough and very hard to eat. The atmosphere was nice. My husband and I drove from Indianapolis to try Stellar Hog, mainly due to I do not eat pork and really wanted some beef ribs. I had the beef ribs with creamy cabbage and fries. The beef rib was HUGE, nice flavor BUT it came out cold. The creamy cabbage was delicious, I wish it was warmer than it was. The only thing that seemed to be freshly made was my fries. My husband ordered the rib dinner with the mac and cheese and baked beans. The mac and cheese was not good at all, he was able to swap it out for fries. The baked beans were OK. He really enjoyed the ribs, but like the beef ribs they were cold. He also ordered the brisket, definitely won't order that again, cold, dry and flavorless. Our food came out pretty quickly, which in most cases is a good thing but not when it compromises the temperature of the food. Suggestion: turn off the air, it was very cold in the restaurant, which was not a good thing since it was pretty cold outside when we visited. The gentleman who greeted us and sat us was awesome and the young lady that took our order was great as well. The gentleman that was behind the bar, not too friendly when I asked for to-go containers. We will come back. Hoping for a better experience next time. Okay, people. Stop going here! This might be the best BBQ joint in St. Louis and they keep selling out now that the secret is out. I selfishly want this spot all to myself lol In all seriousness- The Stellar Hog is well, Stellar! I understand a lot of people get very serious about their BBQ sauce. I can share with the utmost confidence that the brisket and pulled pork here are so tasty that you don't even the sauce. Good lightly fatty brisket is my favorite, but I am picky. It needs to be falling apart, smokey, and cooked enough so that the fat isn't chewy but acts more like a sauce (think over easy egg yolk). STL might be a BBQ town but I have had a hard time finding a place that reliably cooks their brisket perfectly every time. Stellar Hog does it! It's so good I only use the tiniest dab of BBQ sauce because honestly, the meat is so good I don't want anything getting in the way of it. The pulled pork is also super flavorful and moist. Years ago in another state I had a bbq joint I loved. Pulled pork sandwich and brisket were my go to orders. I moved, and for the next 6 years (until we moved here and found Stellar Hog) I couldn't find pulled pork that I enjoyed to the point that I thought I just don't like it and that one restaurant I got it at all the time was fluke. It wasn't, turns out I just needed the talented crew at Stellar Hog. My husband has had nearly everything on their menu. He is the pickiest person I've ever met when it comes to ribs. He compares everything against his fathers ribs, and Stellar Hog is the only place that he not only gave a thumbs up to, but orders them regularly from. They are also enormous - I joke that it's like the Flintstones with the giant dinosaur ribs. Their sides are also really good! The creamed cabbage, which we ordered by accident one night, is impossibly decadent. It rivals the mac and cheese, and might have more cream and cheese than it honestly. I've never ordered cabbage out, I've never said, "I'd really like some cabbage right now" but this stuff - once you try it you'll understand and will also be craving cabbage. Their coleslaw is super traditional - super thin, lightly vinegary with a touch of cream. They even have some vegetarian entree options that are pretty good! We order out more than we dine in (though I wish we dined in more!). They package everything up wonderfully - just be sure to order extra sauce if you like to drown your food in it. You get 1-2 little 2oz cups that probably only have about 1-1.5 oz in it with each meal if you don't request extra. Dining in is super fun and I recommend it. They have a patio outside and a bar inside that just imbues old school STL tap house. The people that work there are lovely, and the father and son duo who run the join are a treat if you get to chat with them. IMPORTANT TIP: Come early and/or order early! Like I said in my first line, they sell out. We made the mistake of having friends meet us here at 5:30pm for a Saturday dinner and they were sold out of almost everything. Glad they're doing such good business though because they might be the only place in town I agree to have bbq at! read more

I wish 10 stars was an option. After a terrible experience at another local restaurant, we arrived to The Steller Hog a little after 9. The restaurant was closing but after we explained what had just happened to us the owner/staff decided to stay open. They offered us drinks & patiently waited for us to review the menu, even explaining anything we were unsure of before we placed our orders. While waiting for the food to be prepared we talked like we were old friends. We did take our food to go,we did not want the staff to stay any later than they had already for us. Location is a bit tucked away but worth the drive in my opinion. I got the brisket Sammie with melted cheese, onions and horseradish mayo and it was large and delicious. My side was the cabbage and I liked it. My father in law got the brisket by itself with beans and he liked both, but he preferred the pulled pork which we got for our wives along with smoked turkey, which they both loved as well. The only item we didn't like that much was the potato salad, which was cubed hash brown like potatoes and they were a little crunchy -- too different for our group.
