Had dinner at the String Bean in Richardson, Tx. The host was not rude, but was not friendly. He didn't "greet" or smile when taking our name for the small wait. The young lady that served us was very friendly and efficient. The tea tastes fresh even though we came rather late in the evening. The menu has a good selection of comfort American food. The chicken fried steak had great tenderness and flavor. The ham (that was the special) was sweet and flavorful. The sweet potatoes was sweet and tasted like dessert. The spinach was good. Cornbread and rolls were fresh and had a great taste. Prices are very reasonable. The portion sizes were good. read more

They also do not allow you to add sides in (for a charge or for free) and you no longer get rolls or cornbread. They do not answer their phones. The price is too high for the experience they provide. Much has changed since the ownership changed last year, new menu, several items and services eliminated. I was disturbed to discover after a recent visit there is not an operable air conditioning system in the restaurant. This was discovered after noticing it was uncomfortably warm and asking why. The response was no it was not working. I then asked when it would be repaired as we would not consider returning until it was and the response was the new ownership had no time line for having it repaired. It was uncomfortable and made the dining experience terrible. The server had visible signs of sweating and discomfort from the heat. How is this possible for a beloved Richardson/North Dallas neighborhood restaurant to come to this? And is it acceptable in the City of Richardson for a restaurant to not have an operable cooling system? read more

The new owners, with their new "streamlined" menu, have wrecked the String Bean. Gone from the menu are more than half the vegetables... and the ones that remain taste like they are from the freezer and / or a can; not fresh and not cooked from scratch. Seasoning is inconsistent. Grease is abundant. The kitchen used to know what it was doing and the food used to be delicious. Now, quality (along with the vitamins) has evaporated. Entrees appear to be from frozen packets. The Specials Menu repeats for an entire week, thus one gets freshly cooked frozen food on Monday and freshly warmed frozen food leftovers the balance of the week. I have been going to this restaurant since it was on Forest Lane many many years ago, and have tried repeatedly to continue to enjoy it in 2023. We had heard about this place on several random occasions and decided to give it a try. First of all, I'm admittedly picky. I notice everything. This is the kind of restaurant that has WAY too many decorations and a cleaning staff that doesn't want to clean it all. I hate when places have that "covered in sticky grease" vibe. I used to love this place because the food was very good. I went there a lot of times during COVID-19. They had to shut down for awhile because an employee had contracted COVID. I continued to get take out when they reopened. Since I hadn't been there for a long time I decided to get my favorite dish there today. I ordered Italian Chicken Breast over rice pilaf. It comes with two sides and I ordered squash and collard greens. I ordered peach cobbler for dessert. I was extremely disappointed with my order. The chicken breast tasted unseasoned, the rice was not pilaf, just boiled rice. The greens tasted burnt and had no flavor. My mouth was running water for some squash. When I got home I did not have any squash but an extra order of tasteless rice. I was very hurt that they didn't even get my order correct. The peach cobbler was horrible. It had a couple of tiny pieces of unsweetened peach and a lot of gummy dough instead of flaky crust. They don't have to worry about me ever coming back. read more

The chicken fried steak is amongst the best I have had, and it is the perfect size. If you order to go ask for the gravy on the side and your chicken fried steak will stay nice and crispy. LOL So we swing in here after some Yelp browsing, and viola.. meatloaf. I didn't care for theirs, but I ate it. I have been to The String Bean many times over the last 20 years and was looking forward to having dinner there. I have normally gone during lunch time, and it was my first time going at dinner time. When we opened the front door about 7pm, we immediately thought the place was closed, as the chairs were already up on the tables on the left side as we walked in. However, we were assured they were indeed open. When we were seated in the other side of the restaurant, it was clear they were focused on closing down. Going out to dinner should still be an experience and what they gave us last night was just awful. The waiter was not very attentive and we had to ask for things more than once. Additionally, when the food arrived, the sides were lukewarm at best. I was actually so irritated, I wrote the waiter on note on the back of the bill. With all of the options we have in the DFW to go out an have dinner, you would think restaurants would care more about the folks that we coming into their restaurants and appreciate the business. It was clear to us that The String Bean staff cared more about closing up and getting out of there by 8pm on the dot. In the parking lot, we wound up talking to some others that were there last night and they also expressed their discontent with the experience. Crappy service, crappy food and very crappy experience! It's kind of hard to describe String Bean. It's comfort food and they have been around forever. This location is also the best one that I remember, clean and modern, but homey and a kids area. I love the food, but when I describe it, it doesn't sound good? I call it upgraded cafeteria food, but mainly because of how it is served. Your sides are put on your plate in separate bowls. I don't know why that makes me think of cafeteria food, but it does. Strangely enough, that is to my liking, as I don't like my food co-mingling. Pretty much everything I have eaten here is good and I can't remember anything I didn't like. I have tried pretty much all of the regular menu items and lots of the rotating specials. This is an old school southern comfort restaurant: all fried or smothered (or both) good basic home cooking in giant portions and reasonable prices. Old atmosphere, waitstaff and hokey gimmicky looking surroundings at to the effect. Staff are attentive, food is ok, salads are huge, grilled chicken is average, meatloaf is exceptionally good (very few fillers), veggies seasoned well and cooked just right. I actually came here with my children (son 5 and daughter 2) on the recommendation of a hotel receptionist. I felt a sinking of my heart as way back pre kids when I was at University my first "real love" came from Richardson and went to JJ PEARCE, he was a football player and I used to sleep in his mustang shirts-totally freaked me to drive by the high school I'd never seen too-memories were freaky. Sorry for the personal anecdote-now about the restaurant. Very kid friendly/family friendly. Food is not gourmet but it is "home cooking" and very reasonably priced. Everything was really great. I rate it so highly because it is often difficult to dine out with kids but they even have a playroom. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone in the area!! read more

We were Immediately met with a smile from Jon at the front, so that was a good start. He also looked like a cool Viking so points there too . Our server (Lee) was phenomenal and very personable, while being helpful too. The manager (Kathleen) came by to politely check on us, love when a manger enjoys her job enough to check how everyone at the restaurant is enjoying their food. We got the chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, fried okra and mac n cheese. Every bite of it was delicious and nothing got left on the plates. So good . I heard several radio commercials for The String Bean, so I decided to check them out. I was terribly disappointed. Right after seating us, we were moved to the very next table. We were told they were expecting a large party and we needed to move. Turned out the large party was in another section. I have no idea why we were inconvenienced by having to move. The server was friendly and confessed the Chicken Fried Steak was frozen and already breaded. I opted for the Big Texan, which she said was not frozen and breaded when ordered. The steak was tough and small. The breading extended an inch past the edge of the steak to make it appear larger, when in fact, it was rather small. The corn was bland and had no taste at all. My French fries were served cold. They must have fried a large batch and got cold while waiting for someone to order them. Needless to say, I won't be back. read more

If this is your first foray into Thanksgiving, then maybe consider starting small?! And you didn't even let people know ahead of time about the line, so he showed up a little before 1:30 to pick up his food (which should have been ready at 1:30) and didn't get his order until after 3:30. Down home eats with a side of some pretty decent mimosas I have to say...at $3 a pop on a Sunday early afternoon you simply cannot go wrong. If you're doing the breakfast buffet do yourself a favor and go as early as possible. As the day goes on the buffet starts looking a little less appetizing. We arrived after 12:30 and I decided to order off of the menu instead. The pot roast is pretty good...catfish looked very fresh and delicious and the side of green beans and mac and cheese hit the spot. Everything went well until the server vbrought my chicken to the table, which ended up being pre breaded and processed. This is just plain good down home food! Ever since I moved to Richardson from San Diego, Ca three and a half years ago I wanted to try this place. A few weeks ago on a Sunday evening I finally made it. Lured by the possibility of seeing their lovely hostess, who just happens to be my most precious grand daughter I ventured in with a friend after a special meeting at my synagogue up the street. Well, disappoint met me at the door as they had sent my grand daughter home earlier because it was slow, but that disappointment didn't last long as our very cheery waitress gave us a run down on the specials and answered all our questions. I have been on a special diet since the first of the year and it can be a challenge to find places that have things on the menu that I can eat other than a salad. I had the grilled Tilapia with steamed broccoli and a forbidden veggie for me fried Okra. Forbidden because it is breaded in the dreaded gluten wheat flour and fried. It was however, delicious! In fact my entire meal was delicious and our service superb. I could easily make this a regular stopping place as their prices are so inexpensive and the amount of food is sufficient, however, I live in Rockwall so it is a bit of a schlep to get here, except when I'm at my synagogue up the street. read more

I had never heard of String Bean but happened to drive by when in the area. My friend and I loved it. It certainly doesn't have cookie cutter decor, but we liked the funky appearance. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Prices can't be beat. My slow cooked pot roast with freshly mashed potatoes was delicious as was the brown gravy to go with it. I selected the fried okra as a side and can honestly say that was the best I've ever had outside of what my grandma used to serve. The complementary corn bread and rolls wee just right. I placed a to go order and waited at the bar. Looked around and the crowd was majority seniors so I worried for a moment if I was going to get lubys cafeteria type food. Well I was wrong. The collard greens were fresh and the mashed potatoes were real. The gravy looked and tasted homemade. I had to knock points off because the pot roast tasted like they only sprinkled a little salt on top and nothing else. I'm used to the flavor of vegetables and herbs. Same with the greens. I appreciate the fresh taste but it say it contains pork but I couldn't taste the meat flavor or any smokey taste. I'll be back to try other menu items. read more

Pleasant Surprise! Happened to be in the area, Googled restaurants near me and up pop this place. Read the reviews and decided to give it a try. We were glad we did. Good, tasty dishes with more than adequate portions for great prices. Nice and clean, lots of parking and our waitress was attentive and very nice. We will be back. Not a place for people of color for multiple reasons. First off we walked in and there was not a person in the restaurant that were people of color like us, we were the only ones in a restaurant full of people. The food I had was bland and greasy and it came with hair. The cups had mold on them or some type of dark spots in the creases of the glasses. We ordered appetizers and never received them. When we asked our waiter for them he responded with oh you're hungry ok y'all want your food I'll go get it and commences to head to the back. When the manager dropped our meals off we let her know that we actually were wanting our appetizers before our meal but since the food was brought just forget the appetizers. She ended up bringing them to us anyway for free and apologizing for the miss. While we started to eat an ant crawled across the table. Once I found the hair on my mushroom I was done and just wanted to leave! We truly tried to give this place a chance and were extremely disappointed! That disappointment turned to anger when both my son and I got to the car and found ants crawling on us!! I do not recommend this place at all even though we tipped the waiter $12 on a $28 dollar bill (they took my hairy meal off the bill) we just wanted to make sure that they didn't look at the color of our skin and assume we were trying to get a free meal. We had money and every intention to pay for a complete meal, unfortunately that's not what we got! This is not even the kind of food I generally like, but I was pleasantly surprised. We had one waitress for a party of 15 or so, and she was flawless. She had intimate knowledge of the menu, including the details of how each item was prepared. She was on top of refills, pre-bussed like a champ, had good recommendations based on subtle clues about preferences, never forgot anything, always asked at the right times whether anyone needed anything else, and always brought those things promptly, all without hovering. She asked how I wanted my burger cooked. I said medium, and it came out medium and was really quite good. As were my fries, and the fried okra was top notch. And to top it all off I almost wish I could give another star for the high quality toilet paper in the restroom. It's the details! read more
