I grew up in Richardson going to this restaurant. It's also been an old standby for my husband as well. Sadly, the last couple of visits have not been good. There is a terrible sewage smell that hits you as you walk in the door. Today, we were seated at a table by a window and there were ants crawling on the table. The food just was okay. In the area, using Yelp to find a good place to eat and this gem popped up. WOW! This is the best home style meals in the region! It is also over the top kid friendly!! Walking into this place reminds you of typical Americana Home style. Lots of country and Americana items hanging on the walls. One alcove was full of Red White and Blue US flag kind of items. The bar is substantial and lots of sports shown on TVs. On the kid friendly note, the bathrooms even have step stools for the kids to wash their hands! We ordered a Texas sized chicken fried steak, chicken and dumplings, mashed potatoes and gravy, black eyed peas, carrots, green beans, fried okra and dinner salads. The rolls and the crisp, cold salad came first. Those alone would have been a great meal. Then came the rest! The steak was huge, tasty, and fresh made. The vegetables were all well prepared, delicious and in heaping portions. Best home style vegetables in the region! The iced tea was kept full with ice and perfectly brewed tea. Seriously one of the best places I have ever been to! I WILL say that we were skeptical because were from out of town. We were upset because we saw online there was a play place but learned since covid its closed, either way we gave it a shot. And everything down to the details was amazing! I was even surprised because I ordered a water and most places the water taste like tap and I was happy theres didnt But other than that our appetizer was chips & Queso and it was the best we've ever had! We ordered the mushroom swiss burgers and pot roast and everything was super hot, flavorful, out in less than 15 mins and cheap! For 3 meals, drinks and appetizers ONLY $45. As a family of 4 we were so surprised we found this gem, it made us so happy we talked about moving here just so we could come all the time. 10/10! The server let us know the chef/kitchen manager had been working there since 15, and he's now in his 50's! Definitely will be back. read more

We have been coming here for 15 years. We are in our late 40s not the normal clientele. I've always ordered a deluxe salad with a scoop of chicken salad half the time the staff doesn't have a clue and brings me the wrong item or overcharged me for the item. If Alyssa isn't behind the bar to serve us our meal, we know it's going to be a total disaster. What restaurant these days does not offer balsamic vinegar dressing does not carry Michelob ultras any longer, and is always out of hamburgers and ketchup so they provide you the small ketchup packets. FYI there is a Tom Thumb grocery store within 500 feet. I've been told the staff is very unhappy with the new owner. It is sad to say this neighborhood staple won't be around for long. read more

Horrible... and I mean horrible meatloaf. First the mashed potatoes came to me cold and the meatloaf was hot. So I let it pass but then I tasted the meatloaf, TRASH. To make things worse the manager seen I was not pleased and only took two bites of my plate. He charged me for the meatloaf just the same. It needs to come off the menu or go back to the drawing board. No seasoning, bland, too many breadcrumbs instead of ground chuck. Then I went to the google reviews and saw others were saying the same. You need to REFUND anyone who is pointing out to you that you are serving trash with that dish. read more

I used to always enjoy the String Beans Turkey and dressing special. Last night it was not the same - it was some very salty sliced Turkey meat. I always liked getting spinach and having their Turkey gravy on top - no more spinach on the menu. And the rolls changed too - instead of the wheat rolls they are now clearly a mass produced white roll. Ive seen in other reviews they are new ownership - it's very obvious things have not changed for the better. read more

Been a BIG fan of String Bean for decades as it moved among 3 locations, so it pains me to write this negative review. We went out of our way to support them during the worst of the pandemic. I do hope management reads it so they can right the ship. I'd been so surprised to see negative reviews appearing on Yelp and elsewhere the past few months, but we ate there very recently and we were quite disappointed with the food. It appears that their long-time awesome cook Alex is no longer preparing the food. The carrots and their name-sake string beans were bland and definitely below par. The catfish and rolls which used to be awesome were "just OK". Salmon, tortilla soup, and cobbler were close to the way they were. I could no longer find my favorites, Mandarin Pork Roast and Sweet Potato Casserole, on the menu. Service was still friendly and helpful (although they mistakenly left out my cocktail sauce), and we'll want to give String Bean at least a couple more tries. But I sure hope they can improve where needed. read more

My husband and I use to eat here every week, we loved the friendly, family owned place where the "Dixie Chicks" got famous entertaining at String Bean at their Dallas location many years ago. The wait staff were all very sweet and friendly, just like family. They also gave very good service and the food was awesome! The owners, Debbie and Joe use to set down and talk to us quite often while we were waiting on our food order. Unfortunately, Deb and Joe decided to sell the restaurant and retire after almost 50 years old. We miss the original owners and one day, the new owner came up to us and introduced himself to us, he was a very friendly and nice gentleman. We were disappointed after he had changed their perfect menu, taking off my husbands Favorite salad/Power Salad, and some of my favorite veggies, fruit, and changed their Senior menu. Their son Coty still works there and some of the wait staff, but some have left . We still visit on occasions to eat and see the waitress's, just wished they had the old menu back. They have only a limited menu now, our favorite foods are no longer served. Miss the family owned business that took pride and extra care in preparing their meals. read more

I somehow manage to forget how mediocre the food is and go back. Pros: - Friendly, attentive staff. Always. - Decent if dated decor. - Patio that's large and usually breezy so even on a hot day it's a nice respite. - One of the few southern comfort food places around. - Price point is good, but still a bit pricey for the quality. - Cornbread is usually good: sweet and not too crumbly. Cons: - The food isn't horrible, but it just isn't good. I haven't found a single thing that tastes, looks, or feels homemade. - Salad dressings consistently watery and thin, particularly the ranch dressing. - Main protein is consistent, but that's because it is institutional food, not fresh. - Vegetables are universally overcooked and usually mushy. - Mashed potatoes may be real potatoes, but they are pasty and flavorless. Add lots of salt, pepper, butter/margarine to them. - Gravies are passable (white gravy that comes only in ecru color) and horrible (brown gravy that is thin, watery, and evokes dish water). Tonight my husband ordered 2 pot roast dinners for us from home in his pajamas. He specifically asked if they continued to come out to the car with the order and learned that they did. Imagine his surprise when he called from outside and a gruff man answered the phone rudely and told him he was wrong--that he would have to come in. He spoke with someone about it when he went in wearing his pajamas, but whomever he talked with did not apologize, nor did they seem to care. Additionally, there was very little brown gravy on the mashed potatoes. It's March and their website is still on Thanksgiving. We have been spending money there since 2016, but we appreciate honest, courteous and professional service, consequently, we will take our business elsewhere in future. Thank you. read more

Birthday Party of 17, two little kids included, had reservations for tomorrow, but we called a week ahead of time and changed it for this evening at 5:30. When our first few family members arrived, the hostess didn't have us on the reservation list for tonight, only for tomorrow. BUT, the host and hostess said they could get us in with just a small wait. Yay! Which was fine, as we all were not there yet. We were seated just as our last couple came in. Chrissy was our server. She was amazing for our big party. She worked hard for us. Did great with the order taking of several separate checks. She kept our drinks filled, remembered everything that we requested, pre-bussed, A-LOT! Which is one of my pet peeves as a former floor director and trainer in services at nice restaurants. She also helped with suggestions for our birthday girl's cake and pie. We appreciated her excellent service. The food was amazing. Salmon, Chicken Dumplings, Meatloaf, several Pot Roasts, several CFS, CFC, spaghetti for the kids. Ranch dressing was good for salads, cornbread!!!! and rolls....yum! The kids had fun with the crayons and activity placemats. And...loved having the option of HOT water in the restroom to wash our hands. None of us have been here before. We will be back! We came from, Frisco, Farmers Branch, Dallas, and most of us from Carrollton. I know that when you walk into a place called 'The String Bean' you don't expect much, but the food really blew it out of the water here, I cannot lie to you. This was our first time coming here and we were sat immediately. Water and drinks were accounted for, and we had time to look over our menus. It feels like a comfort diner, a place with rustic interior and southern influence. Our server had also asked us whether we wanted complimentary bread, and we got a choice of either regular bread rolls or cornbread, or both. Of course we said both! We ended up ordering fried string beans as our appetizers and we were delightfully surprised. For it being what it is, and the both of us being meat eaters, it was unreasonably good. The soup of the day also came out first, fresh, and hot, with the cheese melting perfectly. As for our food, everything was on par, delicious and beautifully presented. What used to be a great family restaurant i learned was sold a year ago and now the new group of owners thinks changing it up is the way to go. Sooooo... ELIMINATE several sides including red beans and rice, yellow squash, CORN!!! What American traditional food restaurant eliminates CORN?? and 3 other sides? And the new "rice pilaf" is just straight white rice. Cutting corners saves money! Now the Daily Specials are Weekly specials. HOW SPECIAL IS THAT?? Im very disappointed and apparently the staff has been hearing about it from others. Its sad that what was the last of the Home Town Family Owned diners in Richardson is gone and taken over by people that have NO CLUE. I haven't been back here in ages. The school I attended was in that neighborhood, so I went there often. We went super early, so the service was a none issue. Our waitress was super attentive. The food is home cooking. I have a soft spot for it. But what I really love is their fruit pie. They unfortunately did not have any on that day, but they did have blackberry cobbler. That is my favorite type of cobbler. So I had a mini blackberry cobbler all to myself. They put a little too much ice cream on it, but that was fine. I just scooped the excess off. There I go again starting with the dessert. Oh well. For the main meal, I had the chicken fried steak. It was as delicious as I remembered. And then you get your choice of veggies. There is a large selection of them. You also get bread. Either the bread rolls or the cornbread. You can also get a combo of the two. The cornbread is like the cornbread you get at Boston Market, so if you like sweet cornbread, your good. But if you like the more savor kind, too bad. I have been going to this restaurant since 2008. Recently the owners retired and sold the restaurant to a foreign owner. Since then in my opinion the business has gone downhill. Let me provide a recent experience: First, let me say that during the Pandemic I went to the String Bean 4 days a week to help them stay in business. I knew the owners were having health issues and I wanted to help them. On 12/19/22 I called in and ordered the daily special Turkey and dressing with no gravy. I arrived at the String Bean approx. 15 mins after calling in and then waited another 45 mins for my order. I get home 15 mins later only to find that the meal is covered in gravy. I check the tag on the bag and see that I have the right order and that it clearly read NO GRAVY. This has happened to me several times in the past and they have always either remade my order or not charged me. I called the restaurant back and was told they would give me a free desert to which I stated that I just paid $16 for a meal I cannot eat (food allergy) and your offering me a free desert? At this point I was hung up on. I drive back to the String Bean and upon arrival I asked for a manager and explained why I wanted to talk to a manager. The employee told me that the manager was busy with a catering order and that SHE would get with me when SHE could, maybe in 10 mins. At this point it was late in the evening and I was hungry so I took the paper tag off of the plastic bag and wrote "Please Refund" and included my name and phone number and asked the employee to please give to the manager when they have time and walked out. AT no point did I raise my voice, become argumentative or swear I ONLY stated the problem and my request. The following day I got a phone call from Dakota, the son of the previous owners who I am told is now in charge or running the restaurant! He loudly informed me I was banned from the restaurant and if I came to the restaurant he would call the police, I tried to calmly explain from my point of view, but he hung up on me. I attempted to call back and when Dakota answered he told to NEVER call back. During Dakotas rant he informed me that I was rude or disrespectful to his staff? Which is completely not true, I was direct to the point as to what the issue was and that I wanted to speak to a manager. When informed that the manager wasn't available I left a hand written note and distinctly remember saying please give this to the manager when SHE is available and walked out. How is that being rude or disrespectful? Now, in my humble opinion hanging up on a customer twice IS BEING rude and disrespectful! this place used to be really good. my favorite was the tilapia plate with the sweet potato casserole. the fish and rice was always so flavorful. the sweet potato casserole was simply delicious. over the last few years the food has gotten progressively less flavorful. they first got rid of the casserole, not sure why but they did. today i ordered the tilapia (same as always) over a bed of rice. nothing tastes like it had any seasoning in it. it was bland. i would say hospital like, but that would be a slight to hospitals. i'm not sure if there has been a change in ownership or what, but the food isn't what it used to be. the price is still reasonable so i give them two stars for that. i certainly will not be returning. read more

I've eaten here many many times since they first opened in that little building on Spring Valley. I always look forward to going. On this visit, we stopped in for a late lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Sat on the patio. Very nice breeze and it was relaxing. Waitress was attentive and friendly. I had the chicken fried steak which was good. I ventured out of my comfort zone and ordered collard greens as one of my sides. I rarely eat greens since I don't care much for them, but decided to give it a try. I wasn't thrilled with them and only ate a few bites. That's not their problem, just not something I like in general. Also had black eyed peas, which were good, but not great. Wheat rolls were also good, but not great. My food wasn't very hot. Went to eat here monday night only because Cindis was closed. BIG mistake. First, walking in there is an odd smell. food was decent, service not so much. The kid that waited on us was nice, but there was NO service. Ordered fried pickles, they didn't come till we already got our meal. NO refills (water and tea).. Out of ketchup, everyone ordered burgers and fries. One of the other nice waitresses brought some packets. Still no refills. Then the guy brought our tab with 18% gratuity added. There were 5 of us. And normally it wouldn't be a problem if the service was good or at least decent. But it was not. We called the manager over. Immediately, she got defensive. Walked away not once but twice. Had to get the waitress who brought the ketchup to actually take the tab so we could leave. We try to support local businesses. But this is one that needs to close or work on their management and customer service.. read more

The food was okay: service has a lot to be desired. The young man who waited on us was young, and they had him all over the place. He never checked on us: the appetizer came out after the food, and we had to ask where it was. We never received refills. I had to ask another wait person to have him come back to our table just to get boxes to go. He came back with the receipt and said that 18% gratuity had been added to the bill, and that was corporate policy. We were a table of 5. I asked for a manager to explain this policy, and all she could say was the wait staff only make 2 something an hour, but if we didn't want to leave a tip, that was fine. She proceeded to have an attitude and left with the check to remove the tip. She then brought it back with even more attitude. She seems too young to be a real manager. If it is your policy to add gratuity onto the check and not give service, you need to revisit what customer service means. We had no problem leaving a tip, but we should decide how much it was worth, not you. And, if you are telling your staff to automatically add that tip in so they get the biggest tip, shame on you for teaching bad habits! read more

Apparently, The String Bean has new owners, and the food is definitely not what it used to be. The chicken strips were overcooked chicken planks, the gravy was bland and the vegetables had no flavor at all. It looked and tasted like it was previously frozen - not made there.
