Located in a residential area in Seattle near Washington University in an unassuming little store. When I first looked inside I wasn't really tempted to go inside, nothing too special about the interior or window display. I did have a chocolate craving, though and returned. Their website mentions "chocolate cake" so I ordered a slice to go. For $5.75 one gets a huge slice! Frosting was nice. The cake itself was dry and really disappointing. If it wouldn't have been for the frosting it would have been a waste of money. read more

I always love coming to the sweet side, the ladies are always so nice. I actually had my sons birthday cake done here with a super mario/bowser theme, I was really blown away at the detail they put into the cake. My friends and family were all asking me where I got the cake done at; surprised at the detail of the cake as well! Communication is easy, since I live about 40 minutes away I just filled out a cake application online and was able to work the cake out with brook! Awesome customer service!! They recently started some new treats, bubble waffles and woopie pies! We went for a bubble waffle cone with soft served, raspberry sauce, cheesecake chunks, salted cookie crumbles and a macaroon! It was so yummy!! I wish it wasn't so far so I could visit more often! read more

The cake looked beautiful and it smelled fantastic but not yummy ! The cake, frosting and filling was bad like bad, bad bad. The cake was for my 4th year old birthday party so I ask for something simple vanilla cake flavor and raspberry filling. Let me tell you no one ate the cake. I spent $170 for the cake to go to the garbage and my little guest complaining "how sweet it was it made their teeth hurt"! Cakes can be sweet and I understand that but man was this cake sweet! The raspberry filling was grainy and soupy it was odd. Everyone was disappointed. Thank god for the piñata and pizza cause the cake wasn't it! read more

I was married a week or so ago in Seattle and worked with Sweetside for my wedding cake. To be honest, I didn't ever think I'd care about my wedding cake. After the tasting, though, I was very excited. I wanted a simple cake with flower accents that matched flowers on my dress. We discussed the design and I sent the Sweetside team a picture of my dress. Floored. Pick my jaw up off the floor. They nailed it The cake was AMAZING. In every sense of the word. The cake was beautiful, exactly what I wanted, and matched my dress perfectly. The cake, filling, and buttercream frosting were fantastic -- we received multiple compliments from our wedding guests. I will, without a doubt, be going back to Sweetside to get a cake for our 1 year anniversary -- though, I'm not sure I can wait another 350+ days! Thanks Sweetside, I will be back! read more

My SweetSide experience was a mixed bag, but they ultimately came through and delivered (literally). I ordered a cake for my wedding anniversary a few weeks in advance and then called them about a week and a half before the cake was supposed to be ready to move the pick up date up a day early (from a Friday to Thursday). When I showed up on the Thursday the cake wasn't ready, as the person I had last spoken with (who assured me it wouldn't be a problem to change the pick-up day with over a weeks notice) dropped the ball. In any case they were very apologetic and even went so far as to drop the cake off at the restaurant I was going to with my wife for dinner later that evening. My wife was totally surprised and loved the cake BTW. I appreciate the fact that they were willing to make something right that they had messed up, I would only recommend that you double check with them a day or two in advance to make sure they have your order ready when you show up. read more

I ordered a custom cake for my son's 7th birthday and it was spectacular! I emailed many times to make small changes and ask lots of questions and they were very accomodating. Ended up getting three different flavors and a highly decorated cake. My son was over the moon and the cake was the hit of the party. The cakes were really delicious too! For the life of me, I can't understand where all these 5 star reviews came from... did we just get their "off day" and the one bad cake they made in recent memory? My sister in law ordered a cake for her fiance's birthday, and while the design was adorable, this cake was truly.... awful. Absolutely, totally disgusting - almost inedible. I watched as we all sat around the table trying politely to take bites of the dry, dense, and utterly tasteless cake. The icing was so greasy - it was like trying to eat a colored blob of crisco straight from the can. If you're looking for a show piece, and not a dessert you'll actually consume, I guess this is your bakery. What a shame that we could only enjoy its external beauty and not the actual cake inside. Definitely would never place an order from this bakery again. read more

I had high hopes for this place and thought I finally found the place for birthday cakes for the family. However, receiving a call the DAY OF PICKUP to be told a cake I ordered ahead of time isn't available (they didn't make it) just isn't acceptable. Being offered slices for it isn't acceptable either. Yes, I will get a refund but to expect a customer to find another cake elsewhere the day before a celebration is just poor business. read more

This dessert company is the best! Their Carrot cake is so moist and the frosting is so smooth! The sugar cookies will change your world with the delicate buttery crumbles and the creamy soft frosting on top! The strawberry cheesecake makes you feel like you're getting something healthy with the berries but it feeds your soul with it's numminess!!! they also have the best macaroons I've ever tasted! They are so light crisp and filled with each unique flavor! Holy mother of all that is tasty!!! And this was only what I tasted at the open house at within Sodo last night!!! I am hooked! read more

Ordered a cake online a month before I needed it to be ready. When my boyfriend went to pick up the cake he was told there was no reservation even with a confirmation email and he paid. They were very nice and made the cake right then and he was given a snack for the mishap and wait. The cake looks beautiful. The taste however for a vanilla birthday cake was okay. As someone who bakes quite a bit, I wish it tasted as good as it looked. There wasn't a lot of vanilla flavor and the crumb of the cake was dense and dry. Giving 4 stars because the cake looked beautiful and they were nice to fix their mistake. Not sure if I would order again from this place though since there are a lot of other bakeries in the area. read more

I didn't buy a cake from here. A neighbour ordered a huge cake and we got the half she couldn't finish. It's buttercream and strawberry with a white sponge. Very satisfying and good quality ingredients. It's not a cake I would order but it's very tasty. read more

Beautifully decorated cakes that taste great. I've always thought cakes had to made dry in order to be decorated in this way, but to my pleasant surprise, the chocolate cake disguised as a molar with dental instruments was a huge hit on the palate and the eyes. I randomly strolled upon this cute bakery and didn't know what to expect from them since I never heard of them. They offer cakes, macaroons, brownies and cookies. There's quite a variety of selections to choose from. My bf bought me a slice of carrot cake ($5.50) and it was big and heavy! Sadly the carrot cake was WAY too sweet. The cake itself was good, very moist from the carrot. It was pretty sweet and dense already but the cream cheese frosting was overly sweet. One bite and I couldn't even take another. I ended up only eating the carrot cake without the frosting. There went $3 down the drain. I probably won't be coming back again, at least not for their cakes but I'm guessing the rest of their selections will be sweet as well. read more

I am giving them this review because I tried to submit an order and wasn't able to. When I realized I wasn't able to do it online I called and they said I didn't have enough time to submit my order (not custom mind you, it was just for a simple signature cake) and wouldn't make any exceptions. I let them know that it was for my best friends baby shower and They still wouldn't do anything for me. read more

The stars were for the lady that handled the situation. The cake itself deserves 0 star. Got the strawberry shortcake back for a birthday. I was skeptical when I was reading other reviews stating their cakes were dry and dense. Turned out it is true. The cream never softened up after hours, my girl friend had to ask me to cut the cake for her because she could not slice through it. The cake was very very dense and dry. The "fresh" strawberries were soggy and liquid coming out of strawberries were soaking into the bread, making the cake very unpleasant. I sent same pictures to the store and the lady that picked up the phone told me that she saw nothing wrong with the cake and only offered a 50% refund. But she was overall professional and remained polite, and eventually refunded me the cake. Like the other reviews mentioned, if you are going to eat the cake like most people, go somewhere else unless you like dense and dry cakes and soggy fruits that were previously frozen. The staff will try to make things right which is a plus, but it is a cake shop after all. Now that I've learned my lessons, going to sample the cake before I place the order next time. read more

They were easy to communicate with and they even delivered it to my work place, which was a huge help to me, as I travel often and wouldn't be present to receive it. The Sweet Side never disappoints. My friends and I have ordered a few cakes from here, they come out beautiful and delicious every time! This review is for the last cake I ordered (pictured). The process was super easy. I emailed the bakery on a Sunday for a cake I needed on Friday. I sent them a picture of something I liked with a price range I was looking to stay within. They gave me a call within a few hours to go over options of things I could add on/adjust/cake flavors etc. My order was complete and paid for my that afternoon. Super quick and easy! The end product was even better than the picture I had sent in. My friend was super happy with her birthday cake! read more

Kara did my wedding cake last October, but I'm finally getting around to leaving a review. The cake was PERFECT, exactly what I wanted and (most important) absolutely delicious. She was flexible and excellent with my tasting appointment and was honestly just great to hang out with. My fiancé really wasn't into the whole cake tasting thing, so I appreciated Kara's fun attitude. I'm 47 years old with pretty specific tastes. Our cake looked exactly like what I wanted and was beautiful with our vintage topper. EVERYONE commented on how delicious it was. We had half lemon with berry filling and half chocolate with salted caramel cream filling. The cake had pink buttercream frosting. Everyone is into fondant these days, but I hate it. Kara did a beautiful job of creating the same effect without fondant. Regarding price: wedding cakes aren't cheap, but The Sweet Side was very competitively priced. Yes, you could get a cheaper cake from a grocery store, but it won't be as lovely as this one. The cake arrived on time and I obviously can't say enough about working with The Sweet Side. Since they have opened a brick and mortar store, I stop in once in a while for a treat - always delicious! read more

The service was AMAZING. The cake was BEAUTIFUL. But the reality is that a cake is really only as good as it tastes. The cake was dense instead of light and fluffy. It was closer to bread. The filling was only slightly less dense than the icing and very similar in flavor. If you want a beautiful cake and great service this is the right place. If you want a light and fluffy, traditional birthday or wedding cake do some samples at other bakeries. Include this one on your list. Your taste might be different than ours. read more

The Sweet Side definitely exceeded my expectations! I know places usually want at least a month to create a custom cake that would need to serve 30-40 people AND be completed in just a couple weeks. So when I emailed a few bakery's to see if they could do this, I was thrilled to receive a prompt email back from Sweet Side letting me know they could! This was for my mother-in-law's 80th birthday so it was very important to us that the cake be amazing. I threw out some thoughts of what I wanted and they promptly came back with a drawing of what we might be looking for. I had a bunch of little changes (short notice and wanting lots of details to the cake....I was shocked they were still willing to make it!). The next design they sent over was absolutely perfect! I was nervous to have to drive with the cake but they delivered, which in itself saved me a lot of stress. Fast forward to the party and every single person asked where we got it. They were amazed at how awesome it looked and so was I. My mother-in-law didn't want us to cut it, it looked so beautiful. But we are all glad we did because it tasted delicious! My wife called to order a birthday cake for my sons 2nd birthday. They agreed to have it ready by the 12th. All of a sudden she gets an email saying they are booked and can't do it. She tried to make payment but the invoice was wrong and they said to call back later and they would fix it. The next communication was that they were booked and can't fulfill the order that they agreed too. Poor business practice to not keep your word. read more

I found this through an ad on facebook. I had actually been looking for a wedding-esque cake to celebrate my 14th wedding anniversary. I filled out the form and heard back from Brooke pretty quick. I went over what I wanted and why. One of their standard cakes was pretty close to what we had had for our wedding, so I picked the floral crescent cake and asked for pale purple icing since that is what our cake had. When I went to pick up the cake was white, not pale purple. Not the biggest deal I guess, but that was the only design detail I asked for, which bothered me. I asked for sliced strawberries for the filling, and that was probably the best tasting part. The cake was very dense and with the frosting, there wasn't a lot of taste to it. My wife and I split a slice and tossed the rest. read more

Some kids grow up catching frogs and doing ballet, but you were more likely to find me playing in the kitchen, elbow deep in flour and sugar. I have been baking longer than I can remember and can't think of many things I enjoy more. I fell in love with the art of decorating at a young age watching my mom take tiers and tiers of plain cake and turn them into a masterpiece of fluffy white flowers and design. After college, and a career in public relations and advertising, I began tinkering with the idea of opening The SweetSide. A few years later, I have studied at the amazing Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts in Toronto and cannot imagine a career in anything else. The matcha I would say is my second favorite. The flavor of the matcha syrup is definitely lighter compared to the hojicha but still is a nice compliment to the soft serve. The black sesame would be the lowest on my list out of the, all since I felt like the flavor was too nutty like it was a blend of sesame and potentially a nut. Overall I would definitely go back for the hojicha but if you're not into that there's definitely solid options for other flavors.

Kara is one talented baker! Im a wedding photographer and so I've seen numerous cakes from The Sweetside, and I have to say, they always look and taste amazing. Being a wedding photographer, I'm at a wedding every weekend, and so I usually pass on the cake when offered at a wedding (cuz a girl has to pay attention to her waistline) but whenever there is a Sweetside cake, I know it's going to be amazing. I was expecting she put the cake in a container so I was surprised. I knew I wouldn't feel great carrying the cake on the bus like I'm at a cocktail party, so I asked for the brown bag. Maybe this place wants to encourage customers to eat in? They could do a better job with the container, but I might as well come in ready with my own container next time.
