We tried this place, located inside of Whole Foods, for something different while in Flagstaff. Expectations were definitely higher than the final result which was decent at best. The menu is limited so we tried the hamburger and fries, the burger was just okay, the fries were slightly better but nothing to get excited about. The atmosphere is very sterile and there really is no service as you order at the counter and someone brings the food to you on a tray. They do have a bar though with several beers on tap which is really the only saving grace. I'm not sure what the concept for this place is supposed to be and it was empty when we entered and left. I never like to see a business fail but I'll be surprised if this place is still around the next time we're in Flag. If it is open we will be looking in a different direction. read more

Service - hit or miss depending who's working. Sometimes super great customer service other times you're not nearly as important as anything else they could be doing even if it's just standing in the back chatting with a coworker. (Does that sum up customer service in 2023 in Flagstaff or what?) Food is pretty good! Consistently great flavors and execution. They're willing to work with allergies and the chefs always seems to want to do a great job. Everything is tasty and even basic things like "fish and chips" are done well and you never leave feeling like you've eaten junk. It's alway a healthier approach. Our group had fish tacos, fish and chips, burger with sweet potatoes fries and a side salad. Nice perk of it being in Whole Foods is that you can also enjoy whatever you've purchased in the store, including your own drinks and treats! Easy light fun situation. Seriously everyone should go here. If you love in flagstaff or just stopping by on your way to another destination, the Switch Back Bar is the place to go for amazing food. The service was excellent. The staff member who rang in our order was friendly and helpful. He checked in on us multiple time while we sat and ate. Our plates were cleared in a timely manner. He really made us feel welcome and at home. The food was all absolutely fantastic. Our entire party of 5 was all vegan. There were multiple options on the menu for vegans which was great. We ordered the cauliflower nachos and buffalo cauliflower appetizers. We ordered 2 regular Beyond Burgers, one mushroom harvest bowl, one special Beyond Burger which was an apple fig topping. We also mentioned we needed to order a vegan mushroom pizza from the pizza place and he was able to ring it in at the Bar with the rest of our order! That made everything so convenient. So the food...lemme tell you...fu$?ing amazing. Best damn fried cauliflower I have ever had. And the portion sizes of the 2 appetizers was insane! Great value for the price. The burgers were fresh and delicious. The mushroom bowl had something crispy and delicious on top as well as tasty mushrooms in the bowl. The fries with the burgers were fresh and hot and crispy. The Switchback Bar is a business that Whole Foods is pushing to get more people inside. The idea seems great as a "local" bar that serves local brews in a store that appeals to the more "neighborhood" feel. I would be curious to see where this idea goes for the chain. I've been inside here twice now. I haven't tried any of the food, but they do offer daily specials that are all priced around $12 and includes a beer under $7. I last visited a day ago just to try some beer for Happy Hour. DRINKS: The Switchback offers a variety of local and nearby state brews. They have roughly 20 beers to choose from that range from IPAs, Lites, Lagers, Stouts, etc. I tried a coffee stout and loved it. Their Happy Hour prices are $2 off the normal price which is great considering that it's for all the beer on their menu. SERVICE: The service here is what kills my desire to give this place a better rating. During my last visit, I only had ordered one beer, and the bartender let me sit there for over 30 minutes with an empty glass and didn't even bother to ask me once if I wanted another, or if I wanted to close out my tab. This was really disappointing as my one beer became a 40+ minute visit with little service. OVERALL: Overall this bar is decent. I feel that this place will take some time to build foundation due to Majestic Marketplace is right across the parking lot. There is a lot of potential though for a new neighborhood style bar to make a name for themselves in town. I hope that my next visit warrants better service, but overall I would recommend this place to try for Happy Hour with a $2 off discount. read more

The Pub Burger easily ranks as one of the top 3 burgers of Flagstaff. This place is a sleeper hit in town, tucked away in Whole Foods. Great food, good beer selection, and plenty of entertainment watching the local puffy jacket yuppies (myself included) overpay for "organic cruelty free karma free chakra balanced" produce. Speaking of overpaying, my only gripe would be that it's a bit pricey, but the food quality is worth it #treatyoself. This place is a nice lunch spot, and they have a tasty happy hour menu too (don't sleep on the cauliflower nachos, dudes). Definitely recommend! P.s. We stopped in for a quick drink the other night and were surprised to find live music! The bar is attached to Whole Foods so it isn't the first place that comes to mind when you're looking to go grab a drink but we were in the area and thought we would give it a try. It has a very hipster/modern feel and it is really moody, kinda dark. The bar is very well stocked with beer and wine and even mead. We went for a glass of red wine and were pleased with the selection. The glass was about $13 so a little more than your average restaurant or bar I suppose. The service was fine, we didn't get anything to snack on, just a drink and you order at the counter so we didn't need a whole lot of interaction either. Came here to grab a drink. The beer list had about 15 or so beers. Service was not that great when we went. Had to wait about 10 minutes until the bartender took our orders. The part that bothered us is that the bartender was staring at our ID's for a long time as if they were fake. We thought it was pretty disrespectful. Been here a few times. Don't know why I haven't said anything yet. The pub burgers and wings are good. We like to hit the happy hour on Monday and Thursday with friends. They like the cauliflower thingys but I'm not really a fan. The beers are fun to try and are usually good if you are a craft beer fan. The wine flights and choices are just ok. The place is clean, fairly quiet, restrooms are clean. Our only complaint is the staff. They really are hit or miss. I'm thinking the staff are whole food employees who also do the bar but were not necessarily hired for their food service skills. Oh well. You get what you order eventually and it's usually good. If you want to come here for a beverage, hope that their taps are working and that they have a selection for you to choose from (they have a good selection, so long as they have everything available). If you're planning on having food, plan on getting here by 5 PM tops- otherwise chances are high they will be out of the majority of the menu (including cheese). My boyfriend and I have been here half a dozen times to eat dinner and have drinks, and only once have they been able to fulfill our entire order. Not sure how other Whole Foods cafes function, but this one needs a lot of work. Not sure we'll be coming back. And it's too bad- we waited a long time for this to open! Oh and ps. Bring cash. Okay we loved this concept when it opened - we have been regular lunch customers since they opened the Switchback. We stayed loyal through tap issues, through POS issues......but now we are annoyed! First they 86'ed the carne asada - which impacted several menu items, and today we walked into more menu cuts - avocado toast, salmon toast actually toast of any kind just to name a few things! Again we like this place but SOMETHING is happening and it's not a good thing! Whole Foods needs to figure out if this is going to be an actual restaurant or if it is just going to be a space where people who buy ready to eat stuff in the grocery store can eat their food and buy a beer to drink with it. We've been here now a few times. Every time has been great! Food is fresh and tasty. Great drink selection with plenty of local brews. Staff is always incredibly friendly too! Great vegan options (try the beyond burger and fries!) and my hubby says their wings are fantastic. They now have a credit card machine up and running. Also really good daily specials.
